this is prolly gonna be the most non canon compliant valentine I'll ever draw lol

every time I imagine human Val this specific scenario of Val running away from the vamps w this random child he found from idk crying in an empty house bc the parents were taken or smth always pops in my head so i drew it lol

It's suppose to be Lord Stoker pov of finally catching up to Val and he's like ''I'm scared but I have to protect this child'' so I wanted his pose and face to be defensive and shielding the child from the wind and stuff while his eyebrows show how scared he is lol

Tbh I don't like it that much bc it looks weird to me but I thought I'd post it anyways cuz why not

Imagine Valentine never really noticing how lovely the stars are because of all the stress and caused by being in survival mode for the last couple hundreds of years and once Spelldon realises he immediately brings Val to Aeaea so he can admire the stars away from all the city lights

Helloooooo me again lol! What do you think is the relationship between Valentine and his clouds? Because it kinda seems like the clouds are some kind of sentient pets (or even servants of some kind?) for most of the movie, but then I remembered after he falls in the the pit at the end, the clouds aren’t there when he’s leaving Monster High with Toralei (And not even mentioned in the comics)…?? So did the clouds abandon him once he lost his powers??? Also- in the Spanish dub, Val refers to his clouds using “ustedes” which is essentially a formal way of saying “you guys”, so if the clouds worked for(?) him, he definitely wouldn’t be referring to them like that?? It makes it sound like Val works for them, like the clouds have a higher authority??

Sorry for the hugeee ask ik this is rlly random but would love to hear ur thoughts on this theory(??) 😭

At first I def thought that it was a 'Val feeds off love, clouds just there to watch the fun' kinda situation bc we don't really see them do anything but be backup vocals for dramatic effect lol but now knowing that Val refers to them as ''ustedes'' there's a more interesting dynamic that could be possible

I don't think he would be the kind to work for anyone else, so maybe the formality is due to vampire's aristocratic nature? That's a bit boring tho so here's a diff theoryyy :3

I like to think of the clouds as a physical manifesation of heartbreaker Val's feelings about what he's doing. Every time real Val feel like what he's doing isn't right, the clouds will mock him and constantly hover around him to make comments about how 'smooth' he is, remind him of heart stealing and generally dicourage any self-doubt. It's like an echo chamber of "look how well you're doing, why stop now?" which keeps him trapped in this suave player persona (imagine crab mentality but one person)

I think the reson why the clouds left at the end of the movie is bc when Val fell, all the ghouls were broken from his fake love bc falling into a pit of body odor completely destroys his repuation and persona. Without his reputation, Val is left defenseless and all the encouragement the clouds gave him wouldn't magically make the situation better so in a way, by falling to his lowest, it set him free from his own expectations bc there's nothing to lose anymore

Critiques I have for the 2025 comic (i have too much to say </3)

TLDR: The plot for this comic is incredibly similar to last year's comic, it’s just ‘Val has a problem/insecure, Spell schemes to fix it, true love the solution’. It’s an okay story but the execution this year feels childish, and Valentine is so ooc in this it’s almost painful to read.

CHARACTER:

Val being unsure of his powers and stealing love makes sense, but not to this degree given the current situation. We alr explored how he feels abt his powers in his diary and the 2 comics and how he’s come to terms with being an emotional vamp and what it means for him, including the fact that true love (doesn’t have to be romantic) is what truly fulfils him so I don’t understand why we’re going through the same journey but worse all over again.

He seems so conflicted with being an emotional vamp and feeding off emotions in this comic like wasn’t there a whole section in his diary dedicated to how "real love sustains you; I have to be true to myself even tho it’s scary" etc. I understand that progress is difficult and you’re gonna go back to your past habits from time to time and yes Valentine realizing that he’s actually in love and coming to terms w/ that is a compelling story but this is not a self-discovery journey.

Spelldon and Whisp are swopping in bc they alr know what’s up and setting up a scheme to make Val realise that ‘lol u emotional vamps feed off emotions’ LIKE WHYS HE ALWAYS GETTING SAVED BY SOMEONE ELSE</333 In the first comic, we had Spelldon set up a plan to get Val to talk abt his feelings and now it's just the same thing but add Whisp to the mix?? Also, her being the mysterious shadow man is so anticlimactic but it’s nothing horrible.

They’re putting too much emphasis on the boyfailure part of him like it was funny when it was every once in a while, but it feels like this entire comic was him being silly, oblivious and not able to do anything himself.

In wdgfil we see him scheming so he can get all the hearts he thinks he wants, in I Only Have Eye for You comic he also thinks of multiple (albeit not that well thought out but still worked out so I’ll count it) plans to try and bring couples together (like bro literally made a deal with a sea witch EXCUSE ME?????), in 2024 comic he’s also capable of thinking of solutions to his ‘problem’ (yes he asks Spell for help but still) but in 2025 comic he’s completely just ‘oh no! Spelldon loves me! Whisp whatever shall I do :( ‘.

2025 Val has completely lost his charm, wit, resilience and emotional depth for a basically regressed back to pre-diary him. It is as if the writers are trying to rewrite his story the same way Frankie is now with Johnny, Dracula’s dead, Cleo’s no longer with the main ghouls etc. Like even his colour palate is different what happened to the black, red Three Cheers era Gerard Way aesthetic him? Why is he rose-pink? (not that I mind it's just a nit-pick)

I don’t like how they constantly have Spelldon be the fixer in both comics, it makes him seem like such a know-it character like ‘my crush wants me to get rid of his emotions, ima not do that and make him understand how important he is to me’, ‘my boyfriend’s freaking out so let me just make him think we’re in danger and have him admit that he loves me back’.

Yes, we see him be respectful and worried if he crossed any of Val’s boundaries, but I would say making your boyfriend think your magic abt to be eaten and that y'all are in danger is pretty like crossing the boundary if communicating normally didn’t seem like an option.

POWERS/EMOTION:

What rly bothers me is the smaller details and their portrayal of Val and his powers tbh, why is his magic pink and all cute, hearts and stars and little Cupid illusions? This is nothing like the Valentine in the movie and diary, and his reformed personality is alr seen in his diary, I Only Have Eye for You comic and last year’s comic.

Maybe the reason for his powers being green in wdgfil is bc he’s feeding off fake love and real love = pink magic but the portrayal of it is still quite cringe and traditionally expected of someone who feeds off love. His powers feel like it’s supposed to be a funny gag but it’s completely unnecessary to do so because it only builds inconsistency in what’s alr been established as his character and powers.

Also, him being so concerned with his emotions going ‘haywire’ feels strange to me because in his diary he says and I quote “ I felt my powers returning, and every day I got stronger”, with Ms Goblin explaining that it’s bc he’s given and giving real love and that’s why his powers are so strong, but we ignore all of that and have Whisp bestow groundbreaking knowledge that nope! His powers are strong bc he’s experiencing real love (which he and us alr knows but 2025 Val doesn’t know?)

What did Val mean by ‘emotional vampire thing’? Does he think he hypnoed Spell into saying love you? Is it him feeding off emotions? Is it his powers getting stronger because of emotions?

PLOT:

This comic’s biggest flaw is the plot tbh, it’s far too complex for a simple 10-pager resulting in less detailed backgrounds, big chunks of text, compacted panels and not fleshed-out themes. I get that we’re shown how Val feels about his powers, self-acceptance and Spelldon’s support, but that needs to be at least 15 pages for it to be good. There wasn’t any buildup to the issue Val tried to work through. Like we had 1 page of the problem, 'Spelldon said ‘love you and kissed Val’. It’s very rushed and could’ve been much more fleshed out if the comic had more pages.

They should’ve bolded ‘reformed’ instead of ‘emotional vampire’ since Val being a past villain makes much more sense for Casta to be hesitant about him dating Spell rather than him being an emotional vamp.

Actually was the problem Spelldon kissed Val and said ily or is the problem the implications bechind it? I would assume it's the latter bc

Edit: They need to make it more clear what the cause of the problem is, simply putting it in the desc of the comic isn't enough bc if I had read this with allll the knowledge of Val that I currently have but not the desc then I absolutely would've been lost at what's going on here.

In the desc it says that Val thinks he's hypnoed Spell but here it says 'Take it from you' which doesn't really make sense bc in order for him to take love he has to fill someone's heart 100% w/ love, and we've alr seen in the wdgfil movie that simply hypnoing someone doesn't automatically fill their heart 100%, he still had to romance Draculaura and even then it wasn't really working bc true love is stronger than fake love and all that.

You could argue that hypnoing someone implies that their love will be/has been taken but so far we only know that if Val cannot fill a heart within 3-4 days of hypno then the person would lose all ability to love permanetly, not that hypno will fill and steal a heart for you

Mattel really needs to give Spelltine more pages bc the first comic was quite well-received, and it will make the characters more engaging bc we get to see more of them and their personalities. A simpler story would fit a short comic like this much better because not every good story requires an existential crisis and a problem. It’ll be so cool if a comic mimicked old MH 2D webisodes in terms of storyline bc it’s so fun and showcases the characters’ personalities so well and with it being a comic, we can have different angles, dramatic effects etc that's possible with comic art which will enhance the reading experience.
