sometimes I remember that arthur didn't even know merlin was the greatest sorcerer in the world or that he was destined to be with him, and I just crumble. arthur just loved merlin because he was merlin. he liked him. he really liked him that much. that was more than enough for arthur. he was really planning to spend his entire life with his servant and he was fine with that. no matter what anyone said or thought. arthur listened to a servant over everyone else and he had no idea that he was the most powerful man he'd ever meet. he broke his heart. he just thought he was a servant and STILL he let him break his heart. over and over and over.

DRAWTOBER #13 - Strangled by the Red String of Fate by idlestories

“It has its roots in a legend from the east, sire. I believe it’s called the red string of fate.” “Fate?” Arthur said incredulously. “What, is he going to be the one to kill me?” “Getting more likely by the minute,” Merlin supplied. “Shut up, Merlin.” Gaius held up a weary hand. “Legend has it that the string connects people to the person with whom they are most compatible.” There was a beat of silence. “You have got to be kidding me.”

this fic? absolutely hilarious. Arthur and Merlin find themselves tied together by the red string of fate, and figure that attempting to fix it by having lots of sex probably isn't the worst thing they can do. it's one of the only fics I've read where Arthur knowing about Merlin's magic and the drama about that actually winds up taking a back seat to the rest of the general shenanigans, and it's really good fun to read.

I like to imagine that when Arthur was younger, before Uther had him start training with a sword, Arthur would go around and explore the castle. This led to him either finding secret passages or just places in the castle that no one knew about or ever visited anymore. These became Arthurs secret hiding spots (he kept the name he used for them when he was a child) that he used to hide from everybody, up until he became king (and even sometimes during his reign as king because being a king is stressful and sometimes he just wanted to be alone. Truely alone.) Nobody knows about these places, nobody at all.

Well, nobody but Merlin that is.

Maybe one day nobody could find Arthur and so Merlin used his magic to track him down and he found him in one of these secret spots. Or maybe Arthur just told him. Maybe he found the blueprints to the castle and found out that way. Idk, but somehow Merlin knows. And Arthur finds that he isn't angry or even annoyed that Merlin knows, as much as he wanted to be. (He still pretends to be annoyed though)

So now, whenever Merlin finds Arthur in one of these spots, he'll either ask Arthur if he's ok or take a seat next to him. And they'll just sit there in silence, watching as the light leaves the room. Whether it be by watching the sun going down or watching as the candle Arthur brought to light his way goes out.

They did that the night Uther died. Merlin sat silently next to Arthur in one of these secret spots. Didn't mention the way Arthur quickly wiped his eyes a soon as Merlin walked in. Didn't mention the tear streaks he could see on Arthurs cheeks, or the redness in his eyes. Didn't mention the random sniffling he heard as they sat together. (They both ended up falling asleep in that spot that night)

And when Arthur asks why he always stays with him, Merlin just responds with the same thing he told Arthur the night the blond had found him outside the door when he had stayed with his father's body the entire night.

"I didn't want you to be alone"
