yandere! popular! boy x average! fem reader trigger warning: dark themes, emotional abuse, stalking, psychological manipulation, obsessive behavior, god complex, power imbalance, paranoia, subtle descriptions of suicide. note: this story is focused more on the mental toll of psychological manipulation, obsession, and stalking of the reader. read at your own discretion.
Tumblr media
yandere! popular! boy is the kind of guy everyone in school knows. If you haven’t heard of him by now, are you living under a rock? With his keen good looks, charming words, and annoyingly perfect smile, he has the entire student wrapped around his finger. Girls swoon, and boys either admire him or silently wish they were him.
yandere! popular! boy isn't downright cruel, but he's far from a saint. He skips detention without hesitation to attend his basketball practices, he steals a look at someone's paper during a test, and he attends every party, frequently leaving with someone on his arm. It's just who he is: irresponsible in a way that only adds to his appeal.
He's a natural extrovert who exudes charm. With a single flash of his pearly whites, people fell in line. He can turn strangers into friends in minutes, as if it were second nature. If he even acknowledges your presence, let alone speaks to you, consider yourself lucky.
As captain of the basketball team, the school's pride and the bringer of every trophy and medal, he’s practically a hero in the eyes of the staff. The coach treats him like a golden child, and his teammates envy or admire him. He wasn't chosen as a captain for no reason after all.
And then there’s you. A typical student, slipping into the background as you always have. You're not a loner; you have a small group of friends and participate in a few extracurricular activities after school.
Everything about you is average. Your looks, your grades, your hobbies, even your personality—nothing too special. You’re not the type people turn their heads for, and you’ve grown used to it. You’re content floating under the radar, doing your own thing while the more noticeable people take the spotlight.
You do not worship the said boy. Sure, you can agree that he's fairly attractive, but you're well aware that there's probably something deeper going on behind that charming smile and polished appearance. Hell, you won't even be surprised if he's doing drugs behind everyone's back. It’s just human nature—no matter how flawless someone appears, there’s often something far less admirable lurking beneath the surface. But for some reason, he noticed you.
It all started when you bumped into him in an empty hallway on Saturday afternoon. He came to school because he still has basketball practices despite the weekend, and you were supposed to pass an essay that you did for one of your clubs to the president. Absorbed on your phone, messaging your friend, you just suddenly collided with something or rather someone.
You immediately apologized, feeling a little intimidated under his gaze. You’d never interacted with the yandere! popular! boy before—only heard a few scattered rumors, so you had no idea what to expect. To your surprise, he just offered a quick smile, helped you to your feet, and gathered the papers you’d dropped without a complaint.
You thanked him and walked away, rushing because you were short on time. All you wanted was to get home, collapse into your bed, and indulge in your favorite snacks and shows. Behind you, he watched, his eyes following your retreating figure until you disappeared from his view. There was something about the way you left that held his attention. You weren’t awestruck like the others. You didn’t look at him with admiration, longing, or curiosity.
The interaction had been simple, brief even, but something about it felt raw, unfiltered. From the way you carried yourself, he could already tell you weren’t like the girls who usually threw themselves at him, all trying to impress with flashy curves, tan lines, and revealing outfits. There was a quiet defiance in your indifference, and it stuck with him. Your resistance—it irritated him. But more than that, it intrigued him. For the first time in a while, he felt a spark of genuine excitement. A challenge. And he was more than ready to make you worship and praise him, just like everyone else eventually did.
After that brief interaction, you started seeing the yandere! popular! boy everywhere. And I mean everywhere. You’re in the library, absorbed in a novel you just picked up? He’s there too, pretending to read, but clearly watching you. His eyes follow your movements, the way your fingers turn the pages, how your gaze stays locked on the words, like the rest of the world has faded away.
You're in the cafeteria, laughing with your friends over lunch? Of course, he's there, but out of all the empty tables in the room, he picks the one right next to yours. At first, you brushed it off. Maybe he just likes that spot. No big deal. You even told yourself you were overthinking it. Because there’s no way he’s actually interested in you, right? You’re not his type. You're sure of it.
Everywhere you went, he was there. And what began to gnaw at your nerves was his constant gaze. Even when he was surrounded by friends, laughing and chatting, his eyes never fully left you. Always watching, always lingering.
The paranoia you'd been trying to ignore surged to the surface as you were walking home alone one late evening. The sun had long disappeared, leaving the streets draped in darkness, broken only by the glow of flickering streetlights.
You’d walked this path before, never once feeling afraid, but tonight felt different. The lights seemed harsher, too bright in their unsteady flicker. And the silence wasn’t comforting — it pressed in around you, heavy and cold. For the first time, every step echoed too loudly, and you couldn’t shake the feeling that you weren’t walking alone. You glanced over your shoulder, heart pounding, but there was no one there. Just you and the flickering lights. You told yourself you were overthinking, letting your mind spiral for no reason. But deep down, you knew exactly why.
It was him. Ever since that day, you couldn’t shake the feeling of his gaze, heavy and sharp, even when he wasn’t there. It clung to you like a shadow. Everywhere you went, you could almost feel his eyes, his smile: watching, waiting. Even if he wasn't even there, his lingering gazes were engraved in your mind.
You shook your head, feeling ridiculous for letting your thoughts spiral. No one’s here—just me and my shadow, you told yourself, trying to steady your breathing. You picked up your pace, hoping movement would drown out the unease curling in your chest. As you hurried past a narrow, unlit alleyway, your eyes quickly glanced in the alleyway. And there he was. Standing silently in the darkness, his figure barely visible, almost swallowed whole by the shadows. His eyes were fixed on you, unblinking.
Your own eyes widened in alarm, and before you could stop yourself, you started running. You didn’t look back. You didn’t want to know if he was really there or if your mind had finally caved under the weight of all your overthinking.
Meanwhile, he watches, hidden in the darkness, and it excites him. The way your fear unravels in front of him, how your grip on reality loosens, unraveling bit by bit. You’re different, he tells himself, a twisted sense of satisfaction creeping through him. You didn’t fall for him like the others did—didn’t chase after him, didn’t look at him with longing or admiration. So he’ll make you break. He’ll make you kneel in front of him, worship him, even if it means shredding your sanity piece by piece to do it.
The yandere! popular! boy's lips curled into a slow, mocking smile. Come on, now. I won’t hurt you. Just... don’t push me to. He stepped out of the alleyway, his gaze fixed on your running figure, a quiet chuckle slipping from his lips as he watched you stumble in your frantic state. Now, I’ll be constantly in your mind. Just like everyone else.
The following days, he starts talking to you more, always with that sickly-sweet smile. His words are coated in honey, but there’s something sharp underneath, something that makes your skin crawl even when he’s complimenting you. You try to pull away, to avoid him, but he closes the distance every time.
You were beyond confused—and terrified. Why was he doing this to you? You were just an average student, someone invisible to most people. So why was he so obsessed with you? The thought sent a cold shiver down your spine. It was all too much to comprehend, and it terrified you to the core.
Desperate, you tried to talk to the police, hoping someone would listen. But they brushed you off without a second thought. His family was well-known in town, too influential for your words to carry weight. They didn’t believe you. And that feeling of being completely powerless settled deep within you.
With the police refusing to help, you realized there was no one you could turn to. Who would believe you? The golden, untouchable boy of the school stalking you, a mere normal student? You could already picture the looks on their faces—the disbelief, the mockery, the ridicule.
You were slowly losing your sanity. Every corner you turned, every shadow that crossed your path, felt like it belonged to him. It was as if he were always just behind you, watching, waiting for you to let your guard down. The paranoia started to consume you. You could barely sleep anymore, dreading the thought that you might wake up one day to find him standing there, just standing in the corner, that eerie smile on his lips. It didn’t stop there. He even began appearing in your dreams, haunting you, following you everywhere you went, no matter where you tried to hide.
As the days dragged on, everything around you started feeling off, like the world you once knew wasn’t even real anymore. The usual buzz of daily life faded, replaced by this creepy silence, like the calm before something bad was about to happen. His gaze never left you, that constant feeling of being watched sticking to you like a second skin. Every corner you turned felt like it was hiding something—someone—and the shadows seemed to grow thicker, more suffocating, with every step you took.
Days have passed, and your apartment remains shrouded in darkness. The once fresh scent of your space has long dissipated, replaced by the faint but distinct odor that lingers in the air, ignored by the landlord, who has long since stopped knocking. The curtains, still unwashed and forgotten, sway gently with the breeze, a haunting reminder of days that have slipped away, unnoticed.
Your phone, abandoned on your desk, vibrates with an unrelenting stream of notifications. The messages pile up, voices from a world that has slowly forgotten you. You don’t bother to check anymore, the endless pings echoing in your mind like a song you can no longer remember, but one that still feels so familiar. They’re all the same. Concerned, worried messages from people who no longer have the right to ask.
Your absence hasn't gone unnoticed, not entirely. Your teacher, concerned by the sudden emptiness at your desk, assumes you’re simply taking a break. After all, your exhaustion had been so visible in the days before, your sleeplessness growing as your mind seemed to crack under the weight of something unseen. You were always distant, eyes flickering like you couldn’t quite grasp where the world ended and you began.
The yandere! popular! boy carried on with his loud, vibrant life, keeping up the flawless image everyone admired. His smile remained perfect, flashing to the world as he moved from one conversation to the next, always at the center of attention.
No one suspected the truth hidden beneath his charm that he had unknowingly destroyed someone's world. Your absence, your empty desk, never seemed to faze him. He never questioned it, never acknowledged it. Instead, he wore his smile, pretending everything was fine. And as the world continued to praise him, he kept on smiling, never admitting the role he had played in your silence.

hang out with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i. part two: hang out with these characters (part one) ii. gender neutral. reader | unedited version (lmk if I used any gendered terms!) iii. content warning: spoilers in manga (chrollo's part), mentions of death, massacre/slaughter, torture, trauma, and violence. stealing, fluff & semi-angst (?) iv. characters: gon freecs, killua zoldyck, kurapika kurta, chrollo lucilfer, feitan portor.
Tumblr media
GON FREECS
You hang out with the boy a lot as the two of you develop a rapport with one another and grow closer. The two of you would often be perched on top of a tree branch as he casts his fishing line into the middle of a swamp. He would ask you questions about your past, how you lived in YorkNew City, and even about yourself constantly while he was fishing.
Talking to Gon is comforting, although he is extremely enthusiastic. You might find yourself baffled as to how he appears to be fulfilled while not harboring any unwelcome feelings or thoughts. But naturally, that wasn't the only thing. He would take you around the town's outskirts. And to pass the time if you were in his place, you two would play a variety of board games.
KILLUA ZOLDYCK
When Gon wasn't allowed to practice Nen for two months because of his injudicious decision of fighting Gido, you and Killua trained together without Nen because Killua don't want Gon to be left behind. Since neither of you was particularly talkative throughout your training session-unlike Gon, who frequently emits a lot of commotion when the three of you are together-it was really awkward and silent.
You're just reluctant to approach him because you two weren't really close. But even so, he would give you advice on how to grow more powerful and tell you about what you should concentrate on. As an outcome, the more you two trained together over the course of the two months, the closer you two grew.
The two of you are hardly alone together unless it involves training, combat, etc. The three of you traveled to Whale Island after leaving Heaven's Arena to meet Mito Freecs, Gon's aunt, and Abe, his great-grandmother. They were quite friendly to you, and his great-grandmother told you and Killua plenty of stories about Gon. Gon once left the two of you because his aunt asked him to go get some supplies she needed to prepare later.
You offered your assistance to Aunt Mito with the laundry. Killua was watching you as you washed the clothes since he isn't really sure how he can help you or do things like that. He would speak about his experiences and escapades as an experienced assassin, a member of the notorious Zoldyck family, and the future heir to the family to keep you entertained. However, it wasn't all that entertaining to hear about how he was actually tortured as a baby.
You also shared your stories with him when you were younger. Being from your typical family, you didn't find it particularly interesting. To your surprise, Killua laughed and thought you were humorous when you were younger because of both your foolishness and your intrepid nature. You attempted tossing him your left slippers, but he deftly sidestepped it. Indeed, the day was enjoyable.
KURAPIKA KURTA
(Prior to the massacre of the Kurta Clan)
He would come and see you in your leisure time and encourage you to read in the neighborhood library with him. You would undoubtedly concur that it is Kurapika after all. You two would sit side by side on the couch in the serene library, and before starting a new book, he would offer that you execute an exchange. For instance, he may recommend a book to you and vice versa.
The majority of the novels he read are far more serious than you may think. He always recommends history or biographies of philosophers who lived a century ago, as well as crime, mystery, and science fiction, works. Despite how much you like it, you feel a little ashamed about the works you're recommending to him since they seem so plain to him. [Unless you have the same taste w/ him]
Most of your hangouts are just solitude and calm, but you like that tranquility. Along with Pairo, the three of you are going to stay in the forest as you three would for an adventurous hangout. You would capture fish or other creatures that are suitable for human consumption.
(After the massacre of the Kurta Clan)
You feel much closer to your childhood friend now that you've seen him again. He lost his positive outlook since, as you are aware, criminals killed the members of his clan. If you were in his position, you wouldn't have any optimism at all. Therefore, you are always at his side to lessen his sense of isolation and provide him with emotional support. A conversation with him may be quite intense and passionate. He would often speak to you late at night about his unsaid emotions, his grief, his trauma, his enmity, and the survivor's guilt.
He's still a huge book nerd, so you two would borrow books from the local library and read them together while relaxing in the calm setting. You are just brought back to the past by it.
CHROLLO LUCILFER
(When you were still living in Meteor City)
Chrollo introduced you to Father Lisores, the owner of the church that you saw. (First chapter) And now, you're affiliated with him because you look like you're on the verge of death and he pities you. In exchange for your assistance with his charitable endeavors and your assistance each time there is a mass for children and other Meteor City residents, he provides you with a place to live, food, and other requirements.
Furthermore, you got to know some of Chrollo's friends. They all treated you well, but Chrollo is the one you get along with the best. Despite the difficulties of his life, he is bursting with positive energy. He frequently stops by the church and enjoys bringing you unusual items.
Most of your time together would be spent in the church's rear chamber, where he would show you other items and instruct you in speaking Gelman. (In the universe of Hunter x Hunter, probably English). His discoveries and his astute thinking never fail to captivate you. He frequently blushes when you praise him, but in all honesty, he kind of craves it since he wants to impress you.
Chrollo requested you, Sarasa, and Pakunoda to voice dub a Mighty Sweepin' Power Cleaners VHS tape into your mother tongue so that the kids in Meteor City could watch and understand the episode. It gave you an immense thrill to voice-dub the role that was given to you, and it warmed your heart to see the children moved and enthralled.
(Phantom Troupe / After the slaughter of Kurta Clan)
After Sarasa's death, Phantom Troupe was established with the intention of exacting retribution. You presently hold the fourth rank and are a member of the Phantom Troupe, a group of malevolent thieves. You two don't spend much time together since Chrollo is so busy keeping up his leadership role, looking for items that can be of great use to the group, or if he wants to steal a particular item. In fact, it only happens once in a blue moon.
But you can't blame him after all. Though when all of you are gathered up for a meeting, he would give you pieces of jewelry, books, and others that you love, which you presumably think that he stole, it feels nice that he's thinking about you.
While waiting for the remainder of the members to arrive, you would speak with them about significant topics and share what you had learned from your mission. His responses to you are brief since he is still engaged with the book he is reading. You feel sort of sad about it but chose to not complain.
FEITAN PORTOR
While the troupe was in York New, he would pay you many visits at the gaming shop where you work, and would practically gaze at you as if you were a ghost or something - well, he's waiting for you to end your shift. You can't concentrate on your work due to his scary glances, and he physically stares at everyone that walks into the shop.
You would advise him to cease doing that after your shift, but he would act unaware even though he understood what you meant. You two would saunter through the Saloma Mall, only glancing at the merchandise in the storefront windows, not bothering to go inside because you're saving up your money.
But there was a time when you spotted a bracelet that piqued your curiosity, but it was so pricey that your wage wasn't sufficient to pay for it. Feitan was aware of this but remained silent. After dropping you off at your flat, he goes to the shop where you spotted the bracelet you like and snatches it violently.
He handed you the bracelet the next day. Unaware that he had stolen it, you were perplexed by how he was able to purchase it. When you questioned about how he was able to afford it, he just said that they were confidential.
Feitan isn't a particularly chatty person, and neither are you, but whenever he comes to see you while you're at work, you strike up a conversation with him, and honestly, talking to him is much more comfortable than talking to other people because he's direct and doesn't sugarcoat his words, which is what you like best.
He just listens to your rambling while paying attention to what you're saying, but he obviously won't be overt about it. The two of you would play video games in your flat after your shift. Because he has a strong sense of competition, he usually defeats you. He constantly invited Phinks and Shalnark as well.

first encounter with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i. part one: your first meet with these characters. (part two here) ii. gender neutral. reader | not proofread (lmk if I used any gendered terms!) iii. characters: gon freecs, killua zoldyck, kurapika kurta, chrollo lucilfer, feitan portor.
Tumblr media
GON FREECS
You and your family just recently relocated to Whale Island, primarily due to financial problems. You weren't particularly against the notion of relocating to the countryside, but you'll miss the city life in YorkNew. In order to become accustomed to the town, you first wanted to explore it.
While you were exploring, some of the locals approached you due to your new demeanor. Speaking with so many new individuals was a little challenging for you, but it was also quite a bit of enjoyment. You were strolling after shopping for new clothes in a store when you stumbled into a person and fell.
"I'm so sorry!" exclaimed an optimistic voice. You looked up and noticed a boy that seems to be in your age with green spiky hair and hazel eyes. He extended his hand, and you grabbed it.
"It's fine, don't worry," you said with a smile on your face.
"Are you new here? I don't recognize your face; by the way, my name is Gon Freecs!" He introduced himself to you.
"Yeah, I just moved here yesterday. My name is Y/N L/N. Nice to meet you, Gon," you introduced yourself, and the two of you have been acquainted since then.
KILLUA ZOLDYCK
You're Gon's cousin, who also stays on Whale Island. You agreed to accompany him to the 287th hunting exam after learning of his objectives. You were concerned that Gon's negligent conduct may bring him a lot of suffering or, worse, death because he can be rather impetuous when making judgments.
You met Kurapika and Leorio since you were on the same ship as them. During the first phase, you and Gon met a boy your age who had silvery locks and stunning blue eyes that captivated you.
"So, you two are cousins?" Killua asked while the three of you were running. Some of the participants were falling like dominoes due to how exhausted they were, but you chose to ignore them. This is just an endurance test, but they're already failing.
"Yup! Actually, we're like siblings with how close we are and we also grew up together," Gon explained and his smile grew wider. Killua just hummed as a response, while the three of you simultaneously ran together.
Killua is considerably closer to Gon, yet the two of you interact and converse every now and then. Nonetheless, you wished to be more connected to the boy.
KURAPIKA KURTA
You grew up in Lukso Province along with your grandparents (mother side). Ever since your parents were assassinated by an elite assassin when you were 8 years old, your grandparents have taken care of you and ever since that day, you have pledged to seek vengeance on the assassin that killed your parents.
Your grandparents live in the Lukso Province predominantly because it is isolated from the rest of the world, which your grandparents prefer. Your mother moved to Zaban City, where your father dwells, after marrying your father, and shortly thereafter gave birth to you.
You spend your free time keeping an eye on your grandparents' nearby fruit and vegetable shop and entertaining the customers who stop by. A boy with grey eyes and medium golden locks appeared one day. He was a kind customer. He would stop by sometimes and you find him to be quite intriguing.
You later learned his name and that he is a member of the Kurta clan. You two grew closer to one another, and you also met Pairo, his other friend. But the day where he stopped visiting you came and the day turned into months. It was a normal day for you until you heard about the tragedy that was brought upon the Kurta clan. You were substantially devastated by his murder and the death of his clan once the word of their assassination spread throughout the neighborhood and worldwide. But you never knew that he wasn't killed and is the sole survivor of the clan.
CHROLLO LUCILFER
You are a resident of Meteor City, a forsaken city where citizens are not listed in the official records. You have no recollection of your parents or how you ended yourself in the city. You had no idea how you'd survive on your own as a child.
And you're completely aware that you'll die within a week. You're famished, and struggling to move. Your clothes are filthy and coated in dust spots. You witnessed a church while wandering around looking for food and approaching it carefully, utilizing your residual stamina.
The church's doors were closed, but not locked, thus you were able to open them by pushing them. The church was not equally huge as cathedrals, but it was vast and expansive for a city that had been abandoned. The walls have been coated white and are immaculate, but the ceiling was embellished with various fresco paintings pertaining to Christianity - quite reminiscent of Michelangelo's masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. The windows were shut down, so the sole source of illumination was coming from outside the door.
You sat on the long wooden pew bench, gazing at the hardened asphalt surface, absorbing the misery and starvation that had been devouring your body for days. Your eyes were gradually giving up until you felt a tap on your shoulder that made you flinch. When you turned around, you saw a boy with medium-length black hair and grey eyes, who was looking at you with a smile.
"Hello. My name is Chrollo. Who are you?" he sought out directly, an inquisitive expression on his face. You didn't respond promptly because you were considering all of the possibilities, but you concluded that he might be able to help you. "I'm Y/N...Nice to meet you, Chrollo...," you sloppily said, your hunger returning, and Chrollo appeared to notice.
He reached deep into his pocket and offered you an edible treat. "I'm sorry, this is all I have," he responded nervously, chuckling. While glancing at the snack on his palm, your eyes gleamed. You took it away and opened the treat, but before you bit through it, you smiled at the boy. "Thank you, Chrollo," you said as you devoured the snack. Unbeknownst to you, a pink hue was prominent in his cheeks, but you were too busy eating the food to notice it.
FEITAN PORTOR
You work as a clerk in a game store at YorkNew City's Saloma Mall. Even though working as a clerk isn't really your thing or something you'd enjoy performing, you don't want to rely excessively on your parents when it comes to buying the items you need and paying for your tuition as a college student. You opted to work as a cashier at a game store in order to make money because you are completely aware of how much they are paying and it makes you ashamed to ask them for something you desire.
However, it is a minimal wage. You work for a full 14 hours without ceasing to sleep or even take a break, but periodically you take a nap if there isn't a customer or if your friend Aki is there. You earn 1000 jenny every hour. (I based this on the currency of Japan [yen] + I also searched on Google abt this, so I'm sorry if it's inaccurate.)
It's Thursday, and it's 10:45 p.m. You yawned as you flipped through the pages of the novel you're reading, rereading the lines because all you've been doing for the past few seconds is reading the sentences and not processing or understanding them. "I'm so exhausted..." you whispered to yourself as you flipped over the pages of the book.
But your lackadaisical manner was shattered when a bell on above of the doors chimed, indicating that someone had entered. You noticed two persons enter the shop: a guy with blond hair and two green eyes, and a boy wearing baggy clothes and a skull-embroidered scarf concealing his mouth. He's also much shorter than the guy he's with.
You noticed the two walking around the aisles, looking for a game that piqued their interest. However, based on your insights, the boy with black hair appears to be apathetic in anything, as he simply follows the other person about, sporadically examining something but quickly leaving it, in contrast to the other, who seemed to be extremely thrilled skimming at various videogames.
"Hello, this is what we're getting," you didn't realize that they'd already arrived at the counter. You simply nodded and scanned the three objects he set on the counter.
"Your total is 3500 jenny," you said and placed the three items in a bag. He placed his money on the counter while you gave him the bag, and you began to count the money that he gave. "Oh, but before we leave, my friend here thinks you're attractive; my name is Shalnark, and his name is Feitan! See you later, Miss!" The person dashed away, while the other gazed at you for a brief time before chasing him down.
You're still perplexed by what just occurred while your hand is still occupied with the coins. And it turns out that as Feitan was sitting on the seats inside Saloma Mall waiting for the rest of the troupe, he noticed you wandering about in your uniform. And we'll...he's been watching you ever that particular day, but he's reluctant to approach you.
