Australia Changed My Life

Booking my first Contiki was something that I was extremely nervous about. My brother and I knew that this opportunity would be truly incredible. Luckily the universe was in both of our favours and we both freed up the time in order to book Beaches and Reefs with Sailing and we never looked back!

My reaction once booking the tour in November 2019:

So... wait, let me backtrack a bit! We literally thought of visiting Australia for years, but never actually had a solid plan on when to go. So one day in November when I came back exhausted from work and threw my laptop on my bed, I remember the initial conversation that put everything in motion - my brother was like, 

“Hey Shaan want to go Australia with me?” 

and I said, 

“Wait, are you being serious?” 

and he just replied with, 

“I mean it, we should just go man!” 

It was the most shortest conversation we have ever had, like we were just going to go out for a meal, or to a party... but it was much bigger than that! Somehow we both knew that we wanted to do something completely random and just fly halfway across the world and so we did!

Fast forward a couple months and my brother and I landed in Sydney and were so jet lagged - it was insane! 

“Travel opens your heart, opens your mind and fills your life with stories to tell.” - Paula Bendfeldt 

I couldn’t agree more with the quote above because this is exactly what happened. I went into my first Contiki trip super anxious and afraid of the unexpected, yet I was met with a group of individuals who each had a story to tell. 

Every single person on the Contiki group motivated and inspired me in so many ways. They also helped me to break out of many anxious periods when I was feeling overwhelmed and fearful of experiencing new and incredible things. I became a completely different person from who I once knew back when I was in the UK before my trip. A few days into the trip I began craving more experiences and wanting to see more of the world, wanting to experience different cultures, and make even more incredible memories that will enrich my life even more!

What I am trying to say is this... Never be afraid of breaking out of your comfort zone, you only have one life so fill your life with experiences, memories and moments that you will look back on years later and be so proud of yourself that you managed to overcome so many fears and break down so many mental barriers.

If someone who has struggled with anxiety can do this, then why can’t you? I believe in you and sometimes all you need to do is ignite that fire inside of you and listen to your heart, don’t put it off for another 5 years, don’t put it off because of others saying it’s not the ‘norm’ to just want to drop things and travel for a month, a few months or even a whole year! 

With meticulous planning and willpower anything can be achieved in this world. 

Here’s to dancing on top of tables with the Contiki family at Cheeky Monkeys to then go onto experiencing a full blown thunderstorm on a boat in middle of the ocean, whilst on a 2 day sailing trip, getting absolutely hammered on rum with the crew and my new found lifelong friends.

Every single day I spent in Australia was something I will cherish forever, Australia is now a place that I will always hold dear to my heart, it’s a place that I needed to visit in order to find answers that I was longing for within myself. It was a place of peace and provided me with so much clarity and holds so much beauty! 

To my amazing Contiki family and to Australia:

“It's not a goodbye, it's a see you later!”
