02.16.18 // I’m starting to feel better, and I’m certainly being more productive today! I’ve already finished the research poster I’ve been procrastinating on. I’ll be presenting at my first conference next weekend; wish me luck!

How to figure out what’s important during a lecture
And not waste too much time reading pages of the textbooks
Tumblr media
1. Check the syllabus. I cannot stress this enough. In the syllabus you will find the objectives of the course you are taking. These are very important because more often than not, the exam questions are based off these objectives. So, if you know what the objectives are, you will be able to clearly identify these when the professor is examining these in the lecture.
2. Read the summary. Textbooks nowadays have a summary at the end of each chapter. I totally recommend to check this summary as it gives the most important points and it gives you an overview of the chapter. Having this overview, is essential because you will have an idea how everything connects to one another without reading the chapter. In the lecture, professors actually give you a summary of the chapter. So, when you know in advance what points the professor is likely to teach at the lecture, the easier it will be on which of the summary points the professor is focusing more.
3. Ask your professor to give you a nutshell of the lecture. Believe me, it works. Professors are willing to help you and it works well as a quick recap too. This has saved me many times and it’s more time effective, as I don’t try to learn the entire book but instead the most important points and then I fill in the gaps.
4. Write the main points down. For this, I like using the Cornell Method. I write it after the lecture is finished so the points are still fresh in my mind. And if I forget something, I still get the chance to ask the professor. This is important because we are retrieving the information from our brain, which is exactly what you do in an exam. The more concrete the points are, the better. I’ve always been an advocate of taking as little notes as possible in the class because in order to truly understand the material, it is better to actively engage with it and you’ll remember better (at least for me).
Recap: Before going to class, you want to check your syllabus and read the summary in order to get an overview and identify the main points of the subject. When the lecture is done, ask your professor for a quick recap, so you can see what the professor thinks are truly the most important parts. And last but not least, write the points down so you don’t forget.

I’M ALIVE! (somehow)
Been under the weather recently but I’m getting by. Have a geo test on rivers hence the mindmap which I think is a great recap before a test, always a good thing to have as a guidline so you know what and how much you should study a certain topic/chapter.

how to prepare for back to school
ah, yes !! the time of year when our emotions are all in a jumble. we’re excited for new clothes and supplies but not really ready for early mornings and homework. in celebration of this “special” time, here are some tips to prepare for the upcoming school year.
fix your sleeping schedule. alright, most of us are staying up until at least 2 am and waking up at noon. start sleeping earlier each night by half an hour and wake up naturally. OR you could go cold turkey like me by sleeping at whatever ungodly hour and wake up at 6:30 (sleep deprived and all). i know it’s hard, but you’ll thank yourself when you actually get a good night’s rest for the first day of school.
change your class schedule before school starts. email your counselor so that you don’t have to wait in a long line to switch your classes. it sucks when teachers assign homework or explain class rules and you’re left clueless because you just transferred in. (added this because my schedule this year was SO messed up rip)
get used to eating at nutrition/lunch time. chances are that you’re not allowed to eat in most of your classes. i know we tend to stuff ourselves whenever we’re hungry (or just bored honestly). make sure to grab breakfast, eat lunch at the time you have it at school, etc. just try to get your body used to running on a schedule. OH AND try to grab something to eat for breakfast.
MENTALLY get used to the idea of school. it’s tough, i get it. we’ve had 2-3 months of freedom to do nothing and have no obligations, but now it’s time to get serious. you can’t start the year slacking off. save the “i’m so over school” attitude until the end of the semester so that you have some wiggle room to chill out. also, things are going to be different than the previous year so make the most out of it.
organize your study space. go through your stationery, and clean it up. it’s just nice to feel put together before all the chaos begins. it’ll be a lot easier to do assignments when everything is ready to go. pack your backpack beforehand, too !!
write your goals down. whether it’s starting a new spread in your bullet journal or sticking a post-it note on your mirror, organize your thoughts and set up your goals for the school year to start right. also, i don’t know if it’s just me, but my handwriting gets rusty over the summer. so yeah ! write some stuff down so it doesn’t feel weird.
treat yourself. enjoy your last moments of summer. go to the beach, buy new clothes, spend time with friends, binge netflix or youtube alone in your room, etc. whatever your heart desires.
