Anniek Tijmes (1985) is an illustrator/visual artist based in Rotterdam (NL). Since my graduation from Art Academy Minerva (NL) in 2011, I have been drawing for many on/offline publications, including Dutch national newspaper Nrc Handelsblad. My illustrations are hand-drawn, graphic, mostly in black and white, sometimes a color or two and combining image and text. Inspiration comes from societal matters, public space, sports and pop culture.

USA Women’s Soccer Team won the World Cup (2019). Even though the Dutch team (NL is my home country) lost the final, I am happy that with this win the debate on equal pay is in the spotlight.

The peloton of the Tour de France passed my hometown Rotterdam in 2015. Many of us were able to watch the cyclists race the Coolsingel, other fans listened to the live report on the radio.

Seclusion. This project is based on 2 days in the outside world (literaly and figuratively) and 5 days of drawing inside. ‘Outside’ I take in everything I can, visually remembering situations, people, how they dress and act, buildings, clouds, trees, thoughts while travelling by bike or train and comments/stories I hear along the way. In this visual diary events come together in one-page-weeklies.
