OVERFLOW

Usually, when I take on a new music video project, it comes to me pretty naturally. I have to see a moment and once it’s taken shape my editing process is to try and bring you into what I see when I’m listening to a song. Usually…

Overflow was a very interesting edit for me, because for the first time the edit landed totally on accident. I was tinkering with CapCut, a very streamlined editor that a lot of people use to make very flashy (and quite frankly, soulless) edits and in my experiment I grabbed two random elements. A random episode of JJK, and a random song in my rotation. And here we are now.

I took what was a total accident, and I edited one powerful and explosive moment into a story about power, overflowing.

Hearing those words gives me chills every time. I still remember seeing this in theaters and being blown away. Crazy to think it came out 100 years ago

I was one of the dramatic “Last Resort AMV” kids.

My first ever AMV used the song, but sloppily cut to scenes of Goku and Vegeta fighting each other. I can’t really say that I had a vision either. Looking back at it now though, it’s a reassuring sign that what once was aimless, is now concentrated effort.

Last Resort Reloaded is fun, it’s edgy, it’s explosive. I wanted to drive each big drop and mirror the explosiveness of every transformation and huge blast.

On the narrative front, Broly and Goku both get some backstory in the movie, so making sure I captured the journey they both take leading into the last big fight was essential.

I wanted after school DBZ vibes, and I think I got it.

“I have been to places that you never want to go”

When anxiety and depression boil to rage.

Watch the World Burn was a really interesting edit. I scrapped half of it, twice, before I realized that this was a story about both Gohan and Piccolo. Yes, Gohan takes the win and ultimately embodies the arc of the song, but Piccolo coming into his new power almost feels like a reassurance that he’s on the right path, much like Gohan’s eventual snap and embracing the latent power that exists within him. Once that fell into place I lined things up to highlight both characters, each getting their own big moment.

The video means a lot to me. It’s explosive and angry. It embodies this build up of complex anger and emotion and explodes towards the end. Gohan coming into his powers is synonymous with me grabbing on to my creativity after being away from it for so long. Gohan was always my favorite in DBZ, and his battle with balancing responsibility and the raw power he’s capable of wielding is a message I’ve always loved.

“it watches everything”

Anxiety is so normal for me, as if it exists in the space between heartbeats. I cut this video when I was 16. Im 34 now, and I can say that not much has changed in the realm of anxiety. It’s always there, its focus shifting like a laser-guided missile pointed at the shit I can’t control.

I “remastered” this edit, cleaning up small errors, and fixing some visual continuity while trying to keep 16 year old me’s vision.

I pulled myself out of a pretty nasty depression and came back to content creation in March of last year. I uploaded one my old videos, an AMV that almost got my first YouTube channel pulled down, and everything started to fall back into place. I collaborated with another creator, did a small series of videos, and finally worked up the courage to pick up a video I started editing 4 years ago. I released my edit of Last Resort (Reloaded) using Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and today it has over 73k views.

I put out 5 big edits last year. Each one, specially picked and purposefully cut to tell a story and give everyone a glimpse at my journey.

Session 1, which released 10 days ago, is a mix of my big edits, with some fun nods and tributes to the things that inspire me. I tried to be purposeful with placing them together to take a viewer through my emotional journey in coming back to content creation. It’s also the most personal thing I’ve ever made. It feels weird to say that about an AMV comp, but you’d have to watch it to understand.

This is my first ever tumblr post… I hope to reach an audience here, but I’m also excited to have a new way to connect with people who are crazy about the stuff I am.
