100 years ago this week, the Scopes Trial began in Dayton, Tennessee. John Scopes, a high school biology teacher, was accused of violating the Butler Act, which prohibited teaching evolution in public schools.
Our current exhibit highlights the "trial of the century," making use of some of our material related to Clarence Darrow, the famous trial attorney who defended Scopes. Following the trial, the two became friends and kept in touch. This 1927 letter was written to Darrow from Scopes, who was in Venezuela as part of a hired oil exploration trip while still studying geology at the University of Chicago. Check out the three photos also enclosed in the envelope!
A full transcript of the letter can be found here!

I had just lost my 15-year-old Dachshund. I told myself I wasn't going to adopt another dog for a while. But of course, I started following Animal Humane Society on Instagram and came across a "Forget-Me-Not," Georgina. We went to pay her a visit. We were told she had "lost hope" being returned twice. She took a while to warm up. We gave her a chance and I'm so thankful we did. One staff member cried with me when I said yes...she was so happy we gave her a chance. She knew her potential. She hasn't left my side since. Georgina from Georgia. Thank you, AHS Staff, for all you do!! Much love.

I adopted Binky from Animal Humane Society back in 2021 and it was a match made in heaven! He was so confident from the start and has fit in with the family ever since. Binky has brought endless joy and laughter to our household. This silly boy loves to cuddle, go for walks, and suckle on his toys like they’re a “binky”! Thank you so much to AHS for connecting us, we appreciate all that you do!

We went to Animal Humane Society “just to look”—our plan was to find a medium-sized companion for our lab, Duke, who we had also adopted from there. But on our way out, I couldn’t resist peeking in at the puppies and that’s when we saw her.
There was Lola—so tiny, so gentle, and so incredibly sweet. The moment we met her, she melted all of our hearts.
Even though she was much smaller than we had imagined, something about her just felt right. We put a hold on her and stepped out for lunch to talk things through. We had planned for a bigger dog… but we couldn’t stop thinking about her.
After much consideration—and a lot of love already starting to grow—we knew Lola was meant to be part of our family. She came home with us that very day, and not a moment has gone by that we aren’t grateful to call her ours. — Rita

Happy (almost) 4th of July!
Here is a 1781 printing of the Declaration of Independence, bound with the constitutions of several early US states and the Articles of Confederation. This copy was printed by Francis Bailey, who printed the first official printing of the Articles of Confederation and acted as printer for Congress and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
We hope everyone has a wonderful, safe weekend ahead!

Old Chicago, 2841 Hennepin Ave (1998) via Hennepin County Library
I also found this blurb from Mpls.St.Paul Magazine about the restaurant:
"Uptown’s Old Chicago offers an everyman’s escape from the trendy self-consciousness of Hennepin Avenue. Inside, you’ll find a comfortable, generic sports bar where you can knock down a grape ape with the locals, watch the sports of the season, or chat with the friendly servers. OC is great for football Sundays, especially if you like bickering with Cheeseheads. In the summer, ample patio space lets you watch the scene on Hennepin Avenue from a safe distance."
