the cruelest reality

tw: angst, lesbian heartbreak (😔), grief, sadness
a/n: thank you so much sweet anon for requesting! It means so much more than you’ll ever know 🤍🤍 lots of love, soph xoxo
This was never meant to be it. It wasn’t supposed to end now. Not like this. Never like this
It all ended a few months ago. Extremely abruptly. However, it has felt like mere minutes since the end of the best thing that Se-mi would ever receive. Ever be blessed with. You were her sunshine after all.
To be fully honest, she doesn’t know why she ended it. Was it to protect herself? Or you maybe? Well, she would do anything to protect you. There was no questioning it. If she had known what would happen, she would’ve got her act together sooner. But thats impossible. There were no warnings, no signs. Which makes this tortured reality feel like a bad dream she can’t wait to wake up from. To wake up and find you asleep, safe, next to her. However, to her dismay that just isn’t how the cards decided to fall. They definitely didn’t fall in her favour, thats for sure.
When she broke things off, Se-mi had decided it was because she couldn’t lose another person. She just couldn’t. Well, that’s what she told herself anyway. Was it to reassure herself? To ease the guilt that lies in the deep voids of her stomach, haunting her? This isn’t what she told you. She never really properly explained why, which is what made the whole breakup an even tougher pill to swallow. She’ll never forget the way your face began to crumple at her words. The way the tears flooded and the dam broke in seconds. You had begged her to tell you why. That you could fix whatever you had done. And now she just wishes she had given into her sweet girl. Who had always been there for her. Who certainly didn’t deserve what she was giving her.
Who simply deserved better.
Se-mi vividly remembers the start of the games. The car pickup, the fumes she breathed in, when she eventually woke up. The only thing she remembers as clear as day is when her eyes met yours again. She saw you in a corner, biting your nails. You always do that when your nervous. She remembers that about you. It was something she never believed would happen. But you were there. Why were you there? She didn’t know whether to be relieved or absolutely terrified. Your eyes were wide once you saw her, the same exact thoughts running through your mind.
Once Se-mi left, everything had gone down hill. You struggled to pay for the apartment on your own. Your mental health plummeted. Like a rain cloud covering the sun. It may even still be that way. You feel guilty. Surely it was because of something you did. You just don’t know what. That’s what made you feel worse. That you had hurt her in some way for her to do this. To end what you both had. What you thought was forever.
For a moment, you just stare. Stare at your past that is stood right in front of you. The person you once thought was both your future and your forever.
There’s a force between the two of you that you can’t quite put your finger on. You’re not sure anybody could fully understand what it was. But it was pulling you towards each other. Almost like nothing had ever changed. You don’t know why, but you just can’t stop your feet. Nor can she stop hers. You throw your arms around her neck, while hers rest on your waist. Honestly, you don’t know why you did it. You never stopped loving her though, that’s for sure. If it was up to you, you wouldn’t be in this situation.
Slowly, you pulled away to look at each other for the first time in what felt like an eternity. You take your hands off each other and just stare for a moment.
“..Hi” she almost whispers unsurely. The guilt came back in waves seeing your face.
“Hey” you murmur back, the awkwardness slowly brewing.
Suddenly, her demeanour changes.
“What the hell are you doing here?” she says sternly with a sense of worry in her tone.
“What am I doing here? What the hell are you doing here?” you retaliate quickly, defending yourself from any sense of criticism there could be (spoiler: there isn’t any)
She pauses.
“Moneys been tight lately. That’s all.” She murmurs quickly, as though she wanted out with it as fast as she could to speed up the embarrassment so it can pass.
“Now what about you?” She says, still curious about why you’re here.
“I-uh-I’m still in the apartment. It’s hard to pay for a two person flat when you’re on your own, you know?” You reply, with absolutely no malice and strictly trying to get her to understand you.
A wave of guilt crashes over her. She was the one who left, crumbling the world you built together. It seems when a vital part of the structure decides to leave everything kind of topples on itself, which seems to be the case here. She put you in this situation. For that, she won’t forgive herself.
You stick together mostly after this, regardless of the situation of your relationship. You’re sleeping in the same bed, feeling the familiar comfort of each other.
One night after mingle, your both just staring at the ceiling. You’re biting on your thumbnail. She knows something is up. Or you want to say something? She doesn’t know just yet. The unspoken conversation is looking and it’s ready to be had. You start it.
“I’m really sorry.” You say, quietly.
She looks over at you in confusion.
“Sorry? Sorry for what?” She responds.
“Whatever I did to make you leave. It was never my intention.”
Guilt washes over her. You think this was because of you? Her perfect girl? Never.
“Honey- no it was never because of you. You didn’t do anything wrong.” She says insistently. Almost like she’s trying to help you believe it.
You look up from her chest, eyes widened slightly.
“Wait what do you mean? Why did you leave then? What went so wrong?” you say as all of these thoughts flood into your head, coming out of your mouth like word vomit.
She put her hands on your shoulders to calm you as you both sit up, needing to do this face to face. You owe each other that much. You look into each others eyes, trying to unpack the feelings left unsaid.
“I- I left because I couldn’t face losing another person I loved. And I just so happen to love you the most. Losing you is something I don’t think I could recover from, so I wanted to remove you from my life before I could properly lose you.”
You stare for a moment, before a smile breaks out onto your face. Then a small giggle, almost sarcastic.
“Are you laughing at me? Oh my god-” Se-mi starts exasperatedly, hand clawing down her face to hide her embarrassment.
“No! No im not laughing at you.” You reassure her, your laughter slowly dying down as you say the sentence itself.
“I just find the situation we’re in ironic. We’re only here because we aren’t financially stable without each other, but we actually do need each other emotionally as it is.” You say with a smirk, looking into her eyes.
“Ugh it’s so annoying time has fucked us over. I wish we weren’t so stupid.” She says, staring at the ceiling again with you on her chest. This is the only thing that brings you comfort in this cruel reality. The reality of dying if you lose a game. A GAME. Your life is gone in seconds.
After a few more quiet exchanges, you slowly fall to sleep. You want to have the energy to digest any information given to you. The next game is starry night.
Once you enter, you must receive a ball from the machine. Se-mi gets a red and you, a blue much to your dismay. Your heart dropped when you saw what was in the box she was holding.
A knife.
“It’s okay” she mouthed to you. Of course she did. She always wants to make things better.
Before the blue team had a head start, she whispered to you “ everything is going to be okay. Don’t worry” before you being whisked away to hide.
You started running. You didn’t know where. How could you? Everything looked the same. You quickly found a room to wait in for the time being. You slid down the wall, spiralling. You were struggling for breath, biting your nails too. But you can’t do this. Not now. You need to be strong. The real fear began when you knew the reds were out hunting for blood.
You moved rooms once or twice since the timer began. During your first switch, you encountered Nam-gyu. He was ready to take you down, but you fought. Oh you fought. You knew you would die one day. Perhaps even that day. But you knew you weren’t dying at the hands of someone like that.
The timer ticked
There were 2 minutes left when she ran round the corner, crying. Her knife was clean. She hadn’t killed anyone.
She ran to you as soon as she saw you
“Baby I don’t know what to do. I haven’t killed anyone yet. There’s two minutes.” She sobbed.
The nickname was foreign. You hadn’t heard it from her lips in so long, but that wasn’t what was important right now.
You held her face looking into her eyes. She could read your mind by now. She knew what you were thinking.
Slowly, she starts to shake her head.
“No. Not happening. We get out together remember? We’re not doing this.” She said, almost angrily. Not at you though. Never at you. At the situation. The universe. All things getting between the both of you living the rest of your lives with each other.
You had come to terms with your decision. It had to be one of you.
Without warning, you push yourself onto the blade she’s holding. You know this is the right thing.
Blood begins to gush.
She stares at you wide eyed, tears beginning to fall.
“No no no no no- why the fuck would you do that? It’s supposed to be me and you forever.”
She holds you as your legs give out.
“Don’t leave me baby please, hang on. I need you. I’ll always need you. You can’t go, not now..”
She knows she’s won’t get a response
“Player 380- pass”
She refuses to let go. What do you mean the love of her life is gone? What do you mean you of all people sacrificed yourself to save her? What was the point of the breakup in the first place?
It doesn’t matter anymore. She still lost you.
Her beautiful girl.
She will never forgive herself for not protecting you.
If she did, you would still be here.

BETWEEN VISITS
PART TWO
series masterlist | masterlist | kang sae-byeok x reader
synopsis: you volunteer at the children’s shelter. sae-byeok only drops by for her brother, always keeping her distance. but over time, things slowly begin to change.
genre: angst, slow-burn, fluff
You don’t see her for a few days.
When she shows up again on Monday, she’s leaning against the hallway wall outside the art room, hands in her pockets, watching Cheol scribble on the corner of a worksheet you’re pretty sure was due last week.
You’re crouched on the floor, sorting through a box of battered paintbrushes for the fundraiser mural this weekend. Half are frayed, most barely usable. You try not to look up at her too often, but you feel her eyes on you every time you move.
“You want to help, or just supervise?” you ask finally, glancing her way.
She blinks, like she’s not sure you’re talking to her.
“You keep staring,” you explain, smiling.
She doesn’t answer, just shifts her weight against the wall and keeps watching.
You shake your head, turning back to the box. “If you’re gonna stare, you could at least help me pick out the ones that won’t leave bristles all over the page.”
There’s a pause, and or a second you’re sure she’s going to ignore you.
Then, quietly, “What’s it for?”
You glance up, “The mural, we’re painting it this weekend.”
She hums, then after a beat she pushes off the wall and crouches beside you.
She picks up a brush, turns it over in her hands. “This one’s useless.”
“Yeah, I know,” you say, grinning a little, “That’s why it’s in the uselessbox.”
She places it back, grabs another, and sets it in the smaller pile of brushes you’d deemed semi-usable.
“Thanks,” you say.
She doesn’t respond, but she keeps sorting. For a few quiet minutes, the two of you sit there on the floor, sifting through old paintbrushes while Cheol hums to himself in the background.
—
Throughout the week, she’s around more.
Still quiet, still on the fringe of things—but she’s involved now, in her own way.
She asks blunt questions that make the newer volunteers glance at each other nervously.
“Why are you letting them waste paint like that?”
“Do you always just let kids yell at you like that?”
“Why are you helping him with that if he’s not even trying?”
You answer every time, patient and straightforward. She doesn’t always agree, but she listens.
And sometimes, she helps—just not the way you would.
Two kids start arguing over markers, you’re halfway through your usual “sharing is caring” speech when she cuts in flatly.
“There’s two blue ones, stop crying or I’m taking both.”
The kids go quiet instantly, staring at her with wide-eyed.
Then they hand over the markers without another word.
You bite your lip to keep from laughing. She catches you looking.
“What?” she mutters.
“Nothing. Just… worked, that’s all.” you say, smiling.
She doesn’t smile, but there’s the faintest twitch at the corner of her mouth before she looks away.
—
Later that night, when you’re pinning up the flyer with the weekend’s schedule, you see her standing nearby, watching.
“You working this weekend?” you ask casually.
“Maybe,” she replies.
You nod, pretending not to sound disappointed. “Shame, there’s a fundraiser on Saturday, we’re painting a mural for the kids centre.”
Her eyes shift to you, unreadable. “That’s what the brushes were for?”
“Yeah, should be fun, Cheol’s excited about it.”
She hums, noncommittal, but her hand lingers on the edge of the bulletin board before she turns away, her fingertips brushing over the flyer.
—
You see her again on Thursday.
She arrives just as you’re leaving, arms full of fundraiser posters you promised to drop off. You’re awkwardly trying to balance the stack against your chest and nudge the front door open with your hip when she steps forward silently, pulling it open for you.
You smile kindly, “Thanks.”
She nods, stepping aside “Where are you going?”
“Just the community centre,” you explain, shifting the posters, “Fundraiser stuff.”
You expect her to say nothing. But she adjusts the zipper on her jacket and mutters, “I’ll come.”
She walks beside you, head down against the breeze, now carrying a few of the posters.
You realise this is the first time you’ve seen her outside the shelter. Same clothes, same posture, but she feels different out here—more out of place, like she’d rather disappear into the background if she could.
You glance over. “You don’t have to stay the whole time.”
“I know.”
There’s a pause, then she adds, “I just didn’t want to go in yet.”
You nod. You get it.
—
The community centre is an old post office with bad lighting and floors that never quite look clean. You leave the posters with the receptionist while Sae-byeok waits by the door, arms crossed
“You ever been in here?” you ask when you’re leaving.
She shakes her head.
“Looks exactly as depressing as the outside does,” you tell her.
She exhales sharply. You don’t know if it’s a laugh, but it’s close.
On the walk back, she asks, “You still need people for that mural?”
You glance at her, surprised she’s bringing it up. “Always, we’ll probably run out of brushes before hands.”
She just hums in response, but you catch her sneaking a look at you from the corner of her eye.
—
Friday afternoon, Cheol proudly shows you a drawing of the three of you—him, you, and Sae-Byeok. It’s crooked, badly proportioned. Your arms are too long, Sae-byeok’s face is a single angry line, and Cheol drew himself with a cape.
You show it to her that night, she stares at it longer than you expect.
“l don’t look like that,” she finally says.
You laugh. “I mean…I’d say the frown's pretty accurate.”
She snorts, barely, but it’s there.
You pin the drawing to the bulletin board in the common room anyway.
She watches, hands in her pockets.
“He’s proud of you,” you say.
She doesn’t answer, but she watches the drawing for a little longer.
—
Later that night, you’re both leaving at the same time.
She reaches the door before you, pulls it open without comment.
“You walking?” she asks, not looking at you.
“Yeah.”
She pulls her hood up, “I’ll walk with you.”
You glance at her. “You don’t have to—”
“I didn’t ask,” she cuts in, already stepping onto the sidewalk.
—
Halfway down the block, she hesitates, “So… this mural thing.”
You glance over, “What about it?”
“You’re just painting with a bunch of kids?”
“And some teens, a few adults, mostly chaos. But It’ll be great.”
She hums, unconvinced.
“Seriously,” you add, “You don’t even have to talk to anyone, just paint next to me, scowl a little, they’ll assume you’re in charge.”
She huffs, rolling her eyes, but there’s a faint smirk tugging at her mouth.
When you reach your street, you slow. “This is me.”
She stops, nodding once, her hands still in her pockets,
You hesitate, “Thanks for walking with me.”
She shrugs, “It’s not a big deal.”
You’re halfway up your path when she calls quietly, “Hey.”
You turn.
She doesn’t quite meet your eyes, “See you tomorrow?”
Your smile creeps in before you can stop it, “Yeah, tomorrow.”
She doesn’t smile back, but she lingers a few a seconds longer than she needs to before turning down the street and disappearing down the street.
i've had a cone and i'm half asleep
please have mercy if theres any errors <3

a/n: my first post! just a little drabble. please give me feedback send requests lovelies, it would be greatly appreciated 🤍🤍
Ellie Williams loved patrol. There was no denying it. She loved the thrill of job and the responsibility of protecting the people of Jackson. Before she could finally join the patrolling team, she had to beg Joel for a singular shift. However, all of this was before you.
Her girlfriend.
And now, it was Sunday morning and the love of her life had slept over the night before (literally what more could she ask for?). The early morning sun was peeking through the corners of the curtains, the birds were singing and completely ready for the day (spoiler alert: ellie was not).
Ellie slowly woke up from the feeling of you shifting under her arm. She rubbed her eyes and glanced over at the alarm clock. It read 6:15AM. She had patrol in 45 minutes
Fuck.
She looks over at you, the sun is catching your face just slightly. You look absolutely ethereal to Ellie. You always do. It’s mornings like these when the safety of her bed feels like your own fragment of the universe where the only people that matter are the two of you. These kinds of mornings are Ellie’s favourite (even more so when she doesn’t have patrol to interrupt them)
You begin to stir as Ellie’s arm tightens around you from behind. She’s ready to forget about her responsibilities and hide with you all day, which is a kind of day she would never ever complain about. A day with you is like a dream she never wants to wake up from. Your eyes open, taking a few moments to adjust to the reality of actually being conscious at this time of morning.
You turned around in her arms and are met with the familiar pair of pale green eyes you fell in love with many moons ago. Just the sight of her makes you smile, no matter the time of day it is or how tired you are. You put your arm over her waist as you look at her for the first time today, cuddling her in return.
“Good morning, Ells” you say, not even trying to hide your smile.
She gives you a squeeze as she holds your lovestruck gaze with her own. She’ll never know how she got so lucky.
“Hey baby” she replies, a small smile gracing her lips.
You tuck your head into her neck, ready to go to sleep again. However as much as you would like to do this, you are aware of the fact that Ellie had patrol. You’re also aware of Ellie’s streak of being late for patrol when you stay over.
“When are you getting up for patrol” you murmur, nose pressed underneath her jaw. Obviously you didn’t want her to go. How could you? Cuddles all morning with your girlfriend is the ideal any day of the week regardless. However, you know how important patrol is and how much she loves it when she’s actually doing the patrolling shes supposed to do. Whether she’s missing you terribly or not.
“Don’t remind me” she groans, tilting her head back on her pillow.
You giggle, propping yourself up on your elbow looking down at her. With your free hand, you place it on her cheek and guided her gaze to your own.
“I really wish you didn’t have to go though.” you say, looking at her.
“I don’t know about that sweetheart, sounds like you can’t wait to get rid of me” she replies, not even trying to hide her smirk and her hand tracing circles on your back.
You laugh, throwing your head back. She thinks you look heavenly. She can’t quite believe this is her forever.
“Hey you know that’s not true! I love you too much.” You say back, still giggling slightly but holding her gaze with a love struck look in your eye.
“I know.” She replies, without missing a beat. Your love for each other is very apparent. You never miss an opportunity to share that with each other, especially knowing the world you live in. Anything could happen, any day could be your last.
“I love you too” she adds, eyes glancing to your lips every so often.
Your smile widens.
Her hand reaches up to hold the back of your head, gently pulling you down to meet her lips for the first time that morning (and the first of many that day).
Her kisses are your favourite thing in the world.
You pull back, looking at her once more. Your hand is on her cheek with your thumb slowly stroking it.
Instead of getting up, she wraps her hands around your waist again, bringing you back down to her chest. You let out a squeal at the sudden movement, quickly turning to laughter coming from the both of you.
Patrol? Patrol can wait at this moment in time. Ellie just needs a little more time with her favourite girl.

a/n: ahhh I hope you liked it!! I know this isn’t great but this is my first attempt at writing. I’m so grateful if you made it this far. Feedback would be greatly appreciated 🤍🤍
