thoughts about the MLP movie below the cut: (spoilers)

can i be honest?  it’s been a couple hours since the movie, and as much as the animation and songs were amazing, i felt the storyline was weak.  i was afraid of this, and it wasn’t as BAD as I thought it could be, but it was definitely not as good as it could possibly be either.  This plot was basically Twilight’s Kingdom Parts 1 & 2, wasn’t it?  a bad guy stealing everyone’s magic and his assistant, who returns to being good at the end.  As I kept contemplating it, I just feel like Twilight’s Kingdom did SUCH a better job at this than the movie, and I honestly wish it could have been in it’s place.

First of all, we’ve got a villain with a backstory who steals the pony’s magic himself.  Who is the Storm King?  Where did he come from?  Why is everyone listening to him?  Why have the ponies not heard of him before now?  Tirek was intimidating and present.  This was mostly Tempest with some Storm King moments, and he didn’t make you feel like he was very powerful without the staff because all he did was bumble around.

Tempest is basically a Discord/Starlight mashup, though she was my favorite character.  She had a sad backstory that basically excused her actions, and of course she reformed because of course she was going to.  She’s not in the Friendship Festival Toys R Us packaging for nothing.

I feel like they tried to hard to mash the “traveling Equestria” storyline in, along with Capper, the pirates, and the seaponies.  Rarity gave him buttons and he became loyal to them.  The ponies sang a song (the best song of the movie) to the pirates, and suddenly they were pirates again and helped the ponies escape.

I did enjoy Twilight’s betrayal and the subsequent fight, because I wasn’t expecting it.  But everything else was pretty predictable.  

But UGH.  Twilight’s Kingdom did everything so much BETTER.  Tirek stole EVERYONE’S magic.  He didn’t take it willingly from the princesses, they had to give it all the Twilight for safekeeping.  There was an INCREDIBLE fight scene that everyone has loved since, and would have looked amazing on the big screen.  There’s self sacrifice, and the villain’s assistant reforming because he realizes Twilight would do anything for her friends, not just because she saved only him.  

I don’t know that the Rainbow Power would have worked in theaters as well as it did on TV, because they had a whole season to set it up.  But I’m sure they could have set up a grand finale that was just as good.

IDK, hopefully I become less critical as it becomes less fresh in my mind.  I just think if we hadn’t seen this storyline before, I would have been happier with it.  But I was so looking forward to Meghan Mcarthy’s story, and it just seemed like a half-assed merch grab of one.

i really liked the amount of Pinkie in it, and the fact that she wasn’t just the comedic character in the background like she usually is.  I was actually surprised by how often they focused on her.  So that was good!

However, I’m going to support it because I do want more pony, and I know that it’s a joy to watch in terms of animation and song, and I know that the kids in the theatre enjoyed it as well.  My mom, who has never really watched an episode and didn’t know what it’s about, enjoyed it more than me!  And that’s great!  I want more people to be drawn to it.  I think I’m a little more critical because I’ve seen over 100 episodes and I’m used to their usual plot lines (festivals, villain redemption, etc.)  I just don’t think this is one I’m going to add to my collection.
