imagine if that ankle injury jeremy had during the bobcats game is actually very old. like high school old. and it flares up sometimes but jeremy didn’t tell us or jean that because of course he wouldn’t. he doesn’t want anyone to worry and it’s not a big deal, right? plus it’s his last year as a trojan; he can’t afford to let an old wound scar over his last year. but it tries to. it’s in how his ankle starts to routinely throb, not enough to keep him off it but enough to make him wince. and jean, who is of course jeremy knox’s number one observer, takes no time at all to notice. he sees jeremy rubbing at it one day and asks “does it still hurt?” and when jeremy laughs him off and brushes his concern aside with a casual “nah, of course not,” jean glares at him and reaches over, pressing his thumb into the bone. jeremy’s reaction is immediate. he hisses quietly and slaps jean’s hand away, face flushing ever so slightly as he looks away from the frenchman. usually he would apologize for smacking jean’s hand away but in his embarrassment he finds he can’t. “it’s just an old injury that bothers me every now and then, is all,” jeremy tells jean and takes a moment before looking back to find jean giving him a considerate stare. jeremy expects jean to scold him, to argue with him over having not spoken up more and sooner, but all jean does is shake his head and go back to what he was doing, crossing off a section of his school notes. and that’s that, jeremy thinks. until the next day before practice jean approaches him with athletic tape and an ice pack, asking which one he needs. jeremy stares. they hold eye contact for a minute too long and jean tsks, kneeling before jeremy on the floor as he starts to slip off jeremy’s shoe like it’s a normal act between them. jeremy’s head feels fuzzy under jean’s touch as jean tells him “we’ll do both, then. and I am doing the piggy back with you after drills are over and you’ve showered.” jeremy can’t even find himself to laugh at jean’s phrasing as he watches the man he’s so strongly been pining after get to work fixating on his ankle, checking it over and doing what he thinks might help. no man has ever touched jeremy so gently. and he wonders what jean’s touch might feel like under other circumstances but only for a moment, too focused on the way jean’s dark curls brush against his forehead. he can hear jean muttering in french to himself; he thinks he picks up “stubborn” and “ridiculous” but also “beautiful” and “worrying.” it takes all jeremy has to not go entirely red in the face as he fidgets, and he hopes his translations are not wrong. but just this once, he won’t ask jean for confirmation. not when this already feels like a dream. not when he isn’t ready to wake up.
