GameMaker is Now Free!

Here's a cool thing: GameMaker is now free for non-commercial, non-console use, and all its asset bundles are free! They've also introduced a one-time free aimed at replacing their current subscription model.

Also, while they're being vague about it right now they've hinted that they might be working toward some open source progress as well, which is very cool!

So if you've ever wanted to give GameMaker a shot and try out a new engine, now you can!

Worked on a Courtroom Concept

I had an idea pop into my head for a mechanic for a courtroom style visual novel where the player has to choose when to object without being prompted. And not like a phoenix wright objection where you accuse them of a crime just like... a regular court drama.

And depending on if the character decided to take action or not will dictate how will the trial will go.

Here's the final result:

Phoenix Wright assets were used for test purposes and would not be included in any final builds of the game.

This took two days-.

The hardest part was trying to figure out how to use a keyboard key to activate a variable to lead to the separate dialogue tree and it was also a struggle to figure out how to get the image to appear in front of the text.

But yeah! I know its not what I usually make but I think it was something fun to play with. I'm putting it in my drawer of ideas for now but just figured I would share.

I think #1 would be good for Betty. Change her sitting in a strawberry patch would be really cute :)

Friendly reminder for game dev students: don't put "aspiring gamedev" in your profile. Imposter syndrome is already a rampant problem in the industry, and this also manifests with early devs feel the need to signal "well I'm not really a gamedev yet because I haven't done [x]" and downplays their achievements.

Are you working on a game in some capacity? Have you ever made a game before? Done a game jam? Are you currently making assets for a game?

The barrier to entry is so low these days and there's really no official threshold you need to cross to be one aside from devving a game - so if you're working on a game and want to call yourself a gamedev then go for it.
