I just saw this interesting meta on the use of disability as a metaphor for some other internal quality (or external circumstance) that is unrelated to the disability itself. Because it didn’t actually discuss Bucky, it got me thinking.

I feel like in some way, the narrative has linked Bucky’s identity solely to his left arm. The loss of his human arm signified a loss of his humanity and his consequent conversion into a killing machine, “the Asset”.

The metal arm with the red star is not only representative of his sins as the Winter Soldier, the narrative also seems to put the idea that all of Bucky’s strength is tied up in that arm (which personally I object to). There are multiple incidences of characters focusing on that arm in order to disable him - Steve holding that arm down as he chokes Bucky (to be fair he did also get his human arm broken), both Steve and T’Challa trying to break that arm during their fights, the super soldiers holding him down by that arm to force him into submission, and Isaiah and Tony destroying that arm.

Tony blasting Bucky’s arm off is supposed to be symbolic of destroying the symbol that represented the Winter Soldier and exacting revenge against what the Winter Soldier has caused in hurt. What this doesn’t do is address that this identity, like his arm, was forced on Bucky against his will - but while over time this prosthesis has become part of his body and identity that Bucky himself accepts, the Winter Soldier is not. It establishes the view that the wrongs are a part of Bucky’s identity, and to take away the arm is to “correct him”.

Which is how we got the ugliness of Ayo taking off his arm in TFATWS (and by some extent, also Isaiah winning the fight by taking off Bucky’s arm in the 50’s) as a way of “correction”, because the arm is there to symbolise everything that is “wrong” about Bucky.
