it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

it is almost scary how fitting one's name can truly be. alecto. named after one of hades' furies, the torturers of sinners. alecto, the fury that best represents anger. it is almost as though her future was set in stone the moment her parents named her. one can not help but think of the irony that her twin's name, amycus, means friendly. growing up as a member of the sacred twenty - eight, meant that from a early age, essentially from the time she begun to crawl, her parents indoctrinated the so called importance of blood purity, making sure that alecto knew that most were beneath her and she should treat them as such. any potential playmates were meticulously hand picked and researched by her mother, ensuring that her precious darlings were near in the presence of anyone the cakirs believed to unworthy of their time. she would often tell alecto that ' some wix families were simply better and more worthy of magic than others '. with her mother as her role model, the person she was around the most, it was no surprise that she begun to adopt her mother's same ideologies and views. not a single original thought of her own. being sorted into slytherin was never up for debate, it was a certainty. if alecto was to be sorted into any other house, she was unworthy of the cakir name. her mother and father had both been sorted into slytherin, so had their own mothers and fathers. it was during her schooling years that her dislike and disdain for anyone outside of slytherin or did not support her views, was evident. alecto was never above openly glaring someone in the hallways, a small up and down glance of disgust and a barely concealed insult to throw into the mix. it was a surprise to all that following graduation, alecto declined the idea of becoming a socialite and instead started a career of being a hit witch at the ministry. it was almost too perfect that the moment she begun to support voldemort, she was already in her position. alecto is not afraid of being vocal of her ideologies and will happily inform one of something she disagrees with but she is smart enough not to openly support voldemort. after all, her current role could very well be advantageous for voldemort and his group of supporters. when it comes to the type of person she is, alecto is almost like poison; striked to kill but silently and without any suspicion. one often does not realise her true meaning behind her words or actions until it is much too late. alecto is the kind of person to fight dirty but her hands remain clean. vindictive, smart and observant as though, she is playing a never ending game of chess. when it comes to her sexuality, alecto is not afraid of using her body to get what she wants; uses men for her pleasure and then dumps them when she no longer needs them.

honestly it was a red flag when bbc sherlock went “well obviously the word written in blood isn’t the german word for revenge, it’s clearly the beginning of the name ‘rachel’, what absolute idiot would fail to see that” when in the original novel it is, in fact, the german word for revenge, which sherlock points out gleefully to a roomful of policemen who all figure it’s the beginning of the name ‘rachel.’

and by red flag I mean it was a clear sign that the adaptation was trying to one-up the source material, instead of engaging with it with love.
