Support Entertainment Workers On The Strike Line
"Roughly 172,000 entertainment workers are currently striking, and many are walking picket lines across Los Angeles this summer during an historic heat wave. For the first time in over 60 years, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild/ American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) are on strike at the same time, essentially halting entertainment production as members seek a fair contract. Picketers outside production giants like Amazon, Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Brothers are braving blistering conditions 5 days a week this summer in order to make their voices heard demanding higher wages, calling out unfair streaming compensation packages, the lack of regulation around the use of AI, and many more unjust grievances.
Regarding the timeline for a resolution, one studio executive was quoted as saying, “The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses.” Right now, this strike is the front line of the labor movement.
You can find a picket line here: https://www.wgacontract2023.org/strike/picket-schedules-and-locations
The Plan
Community Solidarity Project is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that works to support organizations and campaigns in their work for justice and empowerment through event production, logistics management and donation gathering. As the entertainment industry, which is at the heart of Los Angeles, walks off the lot in the name of just and modernized working conditions, our organization is a grassroots partner to striking members in the struggle for workers' rights in 2023.
We are working alongside Strike Captains to mobilize and allocate community resources to support members on the line. With all eyes on Hollywood, consistently strong and well-populated picket lines are a crucial component to showing the media and studio bosses how much public support there is for workers' rights.
The Programs
We have partnered with local grocery stores as well as Best Food Trucks to bring weekly donations of water, sports drinks, fresh fruit, and lunch to a minimum of four picket lines for an initial period of 4 weeks, with the potential to go longer if the strikes continue.
Water, sports drinks & fruit: This effort is already underway, with resources being delivered to four strike lines weekly starting the week of Monday, July 17.
Lunch from Best Food Trucks: This partnership enables us to regularly bring high quality lunches to picketers on a reliable schedule.
Financial Goals
In order to sustain these efforts, we need to raise a minimum of $3200 per week. Here's how those numbers break down:
$6/lunch x 100 people x 4 studio locations = $2,400/week
5 cases/water + 5 cases/sports drinks + 2 cases/fruit x 4 locations = $800/week
As this effort grows, we could aim to cover 10 separate strike lines, 5 days a week! But to get this off the ground, we need to start with the first week at the $3200 mark, and then the first month at a minimum $12,800. By that time, we hope to be exceeding our goals and growing the amount of coverage this effort can sustain.
Historical Significance
Since the mid-1800s, Los Angeles has been a Union Town. At that time, workers in professions such as baking, cigar making, metalworking, printing, and carpentry organized themselves to demand better conditions and fair wages from bosses. Filmmaking began to unionize in the 1890s when IATSE - the International Association of Theatrical and Stage Employees - formed in response to worker exploitation in that industry. Within a few short decades, the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) all took root in Hollywood in order to protect the labor and talent upon which filmmaking and entertainment are built. Today, those labor organizations are rising up again to protect the workers in a modernized entertainment industry.
Support the labor movement today in a uniquely Los Angeles way, by providing much needed sustenance to striking entertainment workers."

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly developing field with the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives. However, like any new technology, AI also has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of AI
Increased efficiency and productivity: AI can automate many tasks that are currently performed by humans, which can lead to increased efficiency and productivity. For example, AI can be used to analyze large amounts of data, identify patterns, and make predictions. This can free up human workers to focus on more creative and strategic tasks.
Improved decision-making: AI can help us make better decisions by providing us with more information and insights. For example, AI can be used to analyze customer data to identify trends and patterns. This information can then be used to make better marketing and sales decisions.
Reduced costs: AI can help us reduce costs by automating tasks and improving efficiency. For example, AI can be used to optimize manufacturing processes, which can lead to lower production costs.
Improved safety: AI can help us improve safety by automating tasks that are currently performed by humans in dangerous or hazardous environments. For example, AI can be used to control robots that operate in factories or mines.
Disadvantages of AI
Job loss: AI is likely to lead to job loss in some industries, as machines become capable of performing tasks that are currently done by humans. For example, AI is already being used to automate customer service tasks, which could lead to job losses in the call center industry.
Ethical concerns: AI raises a number of ethical concerns, such as the potential for bias and discrimination. For example, AI algorithms that are trained on data that reflects historical biases could perpetuate those biases in their decisions.
Security risks: AI systems are vulnerable to cyberattacks, which could have serious consequences. For example, an attacker could gain control of an AI-powered self-driving car and cause it to crash.
Who will be affected by AI?
The impact of AI will vary depending on the industry and the specific task. However, some industries that are likely to be significantly affected by AI include:
Manufacturing: AI is already being used in manufacturing to automate tasks such as quality control and assembly. This is likely to lead to job losses in the manufacturing industry, as machines become capable of performing these tasks more efficiently.
Customer service: AI is also being used in customer service to automate tasks such as answering questions and resolving issues. This is likely to lead to job losses in the customer service industry, as machines become capable of performing these tasks more cost-effectively.
Transportation: AI is being used in transportation to develop self-driving cars and trucks. This is likely to lead to job losses in the transportation industry, as machines become capable of performing these tasks without human intervention.
How many jobs will be lost because of AI?
The exact number of jobs that will be lost because of AI is difficult to predict. However, some estimates suggest that up to 800 million jobs could be lost by 2030. This would represent a significant challenge for the global economy, as it would require us to find new ways to retrain and reemploy those who are displaced by AI.
Conclusion
AI is a powerful technology with the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives. However, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and challenges associated with AI. By understanding the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI, we can better prepare for the future and ensure that AI is used in a responsible and ethical way.

How CPQ Technology Transforming Vehicle Manufacturing
Vehicle manufacturers can enhance their sales processes and customer experiences by using CPQ technologies. CPQ systems are employed throughout several sectors, including the production of automobiles. By automating the design of car choices, pricing, and quotations, CPQ systems are utilized in the production of vehicles to speed up the sales process.
To help their sales teams rapidly and adequately configure a car to a customer's unique needs and then provide a quote that represents the cost of the configured vehicle, automakers employ CPQ Technology. Moreover, CPQ systems can interact with other systems, such as CRM and ERP systems, and manage sophisticated pricing structures, such as volume discounts.
By generating a faster and more accurate quotation, CPQ systems can boost customer satisfaction, increase sales efficiency, and eliminate quote mistakes and inaccuracies. CPQ software can also offer insights into consumer trends and preferences, which can help with product development and marketing plans.
The manufacture of vehicles is changing in numerous ways thanks to CPQ technology. These are a few instances:
Customization: With CPQ technology, buyers can make their cars exactly how they want them. This has become a necessary feature for automobile customers who wish to customize their vehicles and has become an essential consideration in their choice-making process.
Enhanced Efficiency: Vehicle manufacturers can streamline their processes and spend less time and effort configuring, pricing, and quoting their goods thanks to CPQ technology. As a result, the manufacturing process becomes more efficient, which speeds up production and lowers expenses.

Improved Sales Performance: Sales teams can deliver accurate and fast estimates thanks to CPQ technology, resulting in more sales. Also, it enables them to provide clients with customized choices, which can facilitate the closing of more transactions.
CPQ technology is revolutionizing the automobile manufacturing sector by giving consumers more choices, improving the customer experience, boosting productivity, and improving sales performance.
Future of CPQ in vehicle manufacturing
Manufacturing companies are using CPQ software more often, especially in the production of vehicles. By enabling sales personnel to precisely and rapidly configure and price complicated items, such as automobiles, trucks, and other vehicles, CPQ software helps to simplify sales.
Integrating CPQ by more manufacturers to enhance their sales process and boost productivity bodes well for the future of CPQ in the automobile industry. The following are some future advancements that could take place in the upcoming years:
Integration with other technologies: 3D modeling and simulation software are two examples of other technologies that are anticipated to be increasingly closely connected with CPQ software. This would enable salespeople to provide clients with more precise and thorough settings, increasing customer satisfaction and reducing manufacturing-process mistakes. Read KBMax CPQ Software Reviews, Demo & Pricing - 2023, and learn about our avant-garde integrations to fuel your growth.
Usage of AI and machine learning: CPQ software might use these technologies to offer even more precise pricing and configurations since AI and machine learning are increasingly used in production. For instance, the program can gather information from previous transactions and utilize it to advise sales personnel more intelligently.
More customization: Integrating CPQ software will play a bigger role in offering these possibilities as customers seek more vehicle customization options. Manufacturers can provide more options and customizations with CPQ software while maintaining accuracy and speed.
Improved mobile capabilities are necessary for simple configuration and pricing as more sales reps operate remotely or in the field. Features like mobile applications or cloud-based software that are available from any device might be included in this.
The future of CPQ in vehicle manufacturing looks bright, with continued technological advances expected to make the sales process more efficient, accurate, and customer-focused than ever before. If you want to integrate CPQ, contact KBMax now!

Tumblr media
What is Specialised Freight?
Specialised freight is a term that refers to the transportation of goods that are not able to be handled by traditional means. This can include items such as:
- Heavy machinery
- Oversized or overweight cargo
- Dangerous goods
- Animals and livestock
- Liquid and gas containers
- Fragile or delicate items.
What's The Deal with Specialised Freight Services?
Specialised freight services are a new kind of logistics service that is designed to meet the needs of specific industries.
This article will explore what these types of services are and how they can benefit you.
Specialized freight services are a new type of logistics service that is designed to meet the needs of specific industries. These types of freight services offer more than just shipping and delivery, they also offer warehousing, inventory management, and other specialized cargo handling services. This article will explore what these types of services are and how they can benefit you.
The Hidden Costs of Specialized Freights - What you Might Not Know
A specialized freight service is a service that moves goods that are too large, heavy, or fragile for traditional cargo carriers. This can include oversized furniture, construction equipment, and other items.
Specialized freight services are often more expensive than traditional cargo transport options because of the additional cost of securing and transporting these unusual items. The cost of specialized freight services varies depending on the time required to load and unload the shipment as well as the distance traveled.
Tips on How to Reduce the Cost of Your Freight Shipment with a Specialist!
how to use a shipping company for your own shipment needs
A shipping specialist is someone who has been trained and certified for the specific task of handling freight shipments. They are able to provide you with a wide range of services, such as:
-Handling your shipment from start to finish
-Providing you with a quote that is tailored to your needs
-Making sure that the shipment will be delivered on time
-ensuring safety throughout the process.
If you are looking for someone who can handle your shipment needs, then a shipping specialist is what you need.
One last word about the future of specialised freights.
Freight forwarding is a service that has been around for many years. It has been a way to get goods from one place to another, without having to take care of the logistics and transportation.
Freight forwarding agencies are the ones that provide this service, but they have changed their business model in recent years and started using AI to help them do their work.
Freighters and their pilots are the most important part of a cargo transportation company. They are the ones who make sure that the goods reach their destination on time, in good condition and with a low cost.
AI is already helping to solve some of these issues. For example, it can help to optimize routes or anticipate delays in order to save money.

Choosing an Apartment Moving Company
There are many different options for apartment moving services. There are self-service moving options, where you pack and load your own items, and service-based options, where you hire a moving company to move your belongings. Both options are good options, and they all have their pros and cons. When choosing an apartment moving company, keep a few things in mind.
youtube
North American Van Lines
When you're moving to a new apartment, North American Van Lines can take care of the packing process. They have agents at over 500 locations across North America. The company offers everything from moving boxes to vehicle transportation. They can also help you track your shipment. Additionally, North American Van Lines offers interstate moving containers through their BlueExpress program. This service is especially valuable if you have valuable possessions that you want to keep safe.
The company's pricing is not advertised on their website, but it's a good idea to ask for a quote. Depending on the size and number of your possessions, American Van Lines can come in cheaper or more expensive than other companies. You can also choose to pack some of your items yourself and save money on the cost.

The Christian Century is a magazine for the senescent liberal Protestant Mainline. When I heard earlier this month that it had published an article exposing the presence of white supremacists at farmer’s markets [UPDATE: Sorry, I forgot to post the link to the piece.— RD], I laughed it off as another example of the dingbat left policing the boundaries. It should not surprise anyone that unsavory people enjoy a delicious tomato as well as the next person. If a Communist or a neo-Nazi enjoys locally grown fruits and vegetables, I can congratulate him on his good taste in food while rejecting his politics. This is called being a grown-up. When this controversy arose in 2019 in Bloomington, Indiana, the adult mayor of that city resisted calls by progressives to kick allegedly white supremacist farmers out of the farmer’s market, saying that as long as the accused vendors were following the law, he was not going to play the role of thought police.
It turns out, though, that the article’s author, a vigilant progressive named Rebecca Bratten Weiss, identifies poor old Self as a gateway drug to the Ku Klux Kale:
“Polite Christian ethno-nationalism”? Golly. I wonder how the neurotic Bratten Weiss figures that. Then again, there doesn’t have to be logic for these people to make a vicious accusation like that. If they feel it — and they are always sniffing out wrongthinkers — it must be true. Do I even need to point out here that she clearly hasn’t read The Benedict Option?
Judging by her self-description on her website, Bratten Weiss has a rich inner life:
She has spoken at various academic and cultural events on topics ranging from Nietzsche’s aesthetics and Bronte’s feminism, to ecology in literature and vulgarity in religion.
Rebecca recently completed work on The Dirt, an eco-feminist novel exploring the impact of the fracking industry on a dysfunctional Ohio family.
She is also in the process of revising The Peacemakers, a speculative literary sci-fi in which women in a near-future matriarchy control men via advanced AI technology.
She is a member of the George Sandinistas, and one of the founders of the Muse Writers Collective.
I had never heard of this unhappy woman until a friend sent me her Christian Century essay last night. Apparently she is a Catholic who has a Patheos blog in which she writes things like this:
Tumblr media
How surprising to learn that she used to be an adjunct teacher of English at Franciscan University of Steubenville. And she is some kind of ecumenist, as we learn from this 2019 essay. Excerpts:
Driving home with a load of hay, listening to Johnny Cash, wondering what I could burn as a sacrifice to Hecate, I start thinking that probably not many women on this road, driving truckloads of hay, and listening to Cash, are also contemplating witchcraft. Does this make me necessarily more interesting? Or is it automatically less interesting, because “being interesting” is a motive force for me? Not the only motive force, but maybe it taints everything it touches, so there’s a certain embarrassingly meta quality about all my love, or curiosity, or revenge.
Meta or not, the desire to burn something as a sacrificial offering is real. Thinking about burning is real. I have a truck full of a combustible material, and my truck is driven by combustion. I’m rumbling along on the cusp of a flame.
Bless her heart, I do not doubt it! More:
The internal combustion engine is insufficient for the goddess, however, and I have no intention of burning the hay. The questions about burnt offerings become pragmatic. Like, where to do it? If I start a fire in the back yard the kids will all come gathering around, asking if they can roast marshmallows. But I can’t just go wandering off into the neighbor’s field and start burning things (or can I?).
Then there’s the question of what to burn. Something I value, or something I hate? Which would Hecate prefer?
If I get the answers wrong, who knows, some solid citizen might call and have them send the firetrucks after me, and then it’s pretty awkward if I’d opted to burn, say, the testicles of some Nazi dudes who just happened to be scampering across my backyard at the right time. When I just happened to have my scythe handy. Oops. Now I have this whole conflagration of testicles to explain.
Even if it’s what Hecate wants, the fact is, when you’re castrating Nazis and burning their balls as an offering to ancient Greek goddesses, people tend not to be very understanding. They’re all “oh, the incivility!” Or “this is why Trump keeps winning.”
Now I’m worried that I went too far there, talking about castrating Nazis. Now I’m worried that I’m not interesting or edgy, but instead the kind of person from whom you instinctively back away.
Anyway, as is often the case with censorious progressives, the witchy Bratten Weiss misses the irony of her condemning right-wing farmer’s market types for their exclusivity, in an essay in which she appears to claim that farmer’s markets should be zealously defended as a safe space for progressives and fellow travelers. Down with fascist eggplant! In fact, she hates localism itself, if localists are anything other than progressives:
Uh oh! People like Bratten Weiss ruin everything. When I wrote Crunchy Cons back in the mid-2000s, I was delighted to draw attention to people like the fundamentalist Christian family in north Texas who raised meat organically because they believed that was the best way to honor God’s Creation. There’s a quote in the book from the patriarch who says how surprised he was to discover that he had more in common with some hippie organic growers than he did with fellow Christian Republicans who lived a more conventional suburban life. Funny, but these folks weren’t threatened by the progressives who shared their love of organic, small-scale agriculture, and neither were the progressive small farmers threatened by them. They found common ground, and even solidarity. I guess Bratten Weiss, who is two tics away from a gran mal seizure, would want to cut the balls off the fundamentalist family’s sons and sacrifice them to a pagan goddess or something.
Bratten Weiss may be a Catholic, but she is definitely a Puritan. I was recently talking with a wealthy conservative white Catholic friend from the South who was explaining to me his discovery of the value of localism. He and his wife bought some land in the historically black part of their town, and are using it to help their black neighbors build community. They let black folks and others use the land for a farmer’s market, and for meetings between black community leaders and the local police, to build closer relationships (he showed me a photo on his smartphone of a recent gathering). He told me that even as relations between the black community and police in other parts of the country have grown worse, they have strengthened in his town, because it turns out that a lot of black people there don’t hate the police; they just want better policing. He talked about a woman black pastor in his town who makes this work of community-building possible. And he talked about long-term plans to restore what was once a thriving commercial sector of black-owned businesses.
My friend said that he has grown disillusioned with national politics, and now focuses on building up localism. This guy is very conservative. I’m guessing that his black woman pastor friend is … not. But they work together because they both want to make the town they share into a better place for them all to live. If Bratten Weiss showed up in their town, she would no doubt do her best to drive these two apart to purify the movement. People like that — and we have them on the Right too — are so exhausting. They are the kind of people from whom you instinctively back away. Unfortunately, they hold a lot of cultural and institutional power right now in America. Which is a big reason that we are in such a mess.

Pew releases AI, Robotics, and the Future of Jobs
It's been quite a few days.
The Pew Research Internet Center released their AI, Robotics, and the Future of Jobs report this week, where we were asked this question:
The economic impact of robotic advances and AI---Self-driving cars, intelligent digital agents that can act for you, and robots are advancing rapidly. Will networked, automated, artificial intelligence (AI) applications and robotic devices have displaced more jobs than they have created by 2025?
I was prominently quoted on the first page:
The full quote is this:
Stowe Boyd, lead researcher at GigaOM Research, said, "As just one aspect of the rise of robots and AI, widespread use of autonomous cars and trucks will be the immediate end of taxi drivers and truck drivers; truck driver is the number-one occupation for men in the U.S.. Just as importantly, autonomous cars will radically decrease car ownership, which will impact the automotive industry. Perhaps 70% of cars in urban areas would go away. Autonomous robots and systems could impact up to 50% of jobs, according to recent analysis by Frey and Osborne at Oxford, leaving only jobs that require the 'application of heuristics' or creativity...An increasing proportion of the world's population will be outside of the world of work---either living on the dole, or benefiting from the dramatically decreased costs of goods to eke out a subsistence lifestyle. The central question of 2025 will be: What are people for in a world that does not need their labor, and where only a minority are needed to guide the 'bot-based economy?"
I've been interviewed several times about the report --- by the AP, various newspapers, and others --- and its been quoted all over, as in the NY Times, Fortune, and Forbes. Here's an example from CIO:
Steve Rosenbush, The Morning Download: Facebook,Yahoo Developing New Models for Data Protection
AI, robotics, and the future of jobs. With Watson angling for the corner office, no job is safe from automation. Are the robots coming to take our jobs? The Pew Research Center recently asked nearly 2,000 technologists what the employment landscape will look like over the next decade, as artificial intelligence and robotics continue to gain ground. The experts, who included CEOs, tech journalists, Internet pioneers and researchers at tech vendors, are divided almost 50-50 on whether AI applications and robots will displace more jobs than they create. Some foresee more income inequality and more blue and white-collar displacement. "The central question of 2025 will be: What are people for in a world that does not need their labor, and where only a minority are needed to guide the 'bot-based economy?" wonders Stow Boyd [sic], lead researcher at GigaOM research.  Others are more optimistic, citing humanity's ability to bounce back. "Technology will continue to disrupt jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created," said Jonathan Grudin, principal researcher for Microsoft MSFT -0.30% Corp. So the short answer is that the jury's still out on whether we're heading towards a breakdown in social order or a new era of techno-based entrepreneurship. Someone should ask Watson what it thinks.
Interesting that the business publications, like Forbes and Fortune, were more interested in my predictions about robot sex partners than the impacts on work:
Robotic sex partners will be a commonplace, although the source of scorn and division, the way that critics today bemoan selfies as an indicator of all that's wrong with the world.
One thing that has been made clear in the fallout since the report was published: there is a sizable contingent who --- like me --- are convinced that increasing automation will lead to a large reduction in employment, and there appears to be an equally vocal group that believe that either new work will arise that only people can do or governmental controls will be put in place so that people will be employed whether we need them to be or not.
The authors of the report, Aaron Smith and Janna Anderson, characterized the various positions of the hopeful (52%) and the concerned (48%):
Key themes: reasons to be hopeful
Advances in technology may displace certain types of work, but historically they have been a net creator of jobs.
We will adapt to these changes by inventing entirely new types of work, and by taking advantage of uniquely human capabilities.
Technology will free us from day-to-day drudgery, and allow us to define our relationship with "work" in a more positive and socially beneficial way.
Ultimately, we as a society control our own destiny through the choices we make.
Key themes: reasons to be concerned
Impacts from automation have thus far impacted mostly blue-collar employment; the coming wave of innovation threatens to upend white-collar work as well.
Certain highly-skilled workers will succeed wildly in this new environment---but far more may be displaced into lower paying service industry jobs at best, or permanent unemployment at worst.
Our educational system is not adequately preparing us for work of the future, and our political and economic institutions are poorly equipped to handle these hard choices.
I've been asked by Aaron to appear at the Pivot Conference this October to speak on this theme.
At the time that the telephone switch was being developed, projections showed that all the women in America would have to be telephone operators in the next 20 years to handle the growth of telephone use. Now the number of telephone operators is functionally zero. Yes, those workers transitioned from that work to other occupations. If 85% of other occupations are either eliminated or disrupted out of existence, and all that remains is a narrow suite of domains where AI and robots can't play because of insufficient creativity or human emotion --- like improvisational jazz, playing Go, or nursing the sick --- we will hit a wall.
It's hard to imagine that our economy can respond to this challenge as quickly as our technologies can make it a reality. We're still living in a world where women are paid 87¢ for every $1 that men make, and women have been in the workforce for a hundred years. Culture is slow but technology's fast.
I tweeted earlier this week:
Or, how will unemployed people eat? The level of unemployment we have now is the new normal, not temporary @mertinsantos @pewresearch

More Interesting Energy Stories that you Might Have Missed
Guest blog by Mr. R. U. Cirius: Here are some interesting and somewhat offbeat energy stories that haven’t gotten much media attention that OWOE readers might have missed.
New Cryptocrude
The government of Venezuela, which has been unable to get inflation in the country under control (see new 200,000 Bolivar note worth 0.1 cents), has come up with a new idea on how to monetize their oil resource wealth – they are planning to introduce a variation of a cryptocurrency in the form of digitized oil. Venezuela is purported to have the largest oil reserves in the world, 304 billion barrels, which is just ahead of Saudi Arabia at 298 billion barrels. Unfortunately, most of this is extra-heavy oil that is very difficult and expensive to produce, and the mismanagement by the government has led to a precipitous drop in production over the last decade. The solution: don’t try to produce the oil, sell it virtually while it is still in the ground. Make the money now without having to do any work and leave the messy details on how to produce heavy oil to someone else.
The idea has garnered interest from Canada, another country with large heavy oil deposits that has also struggled with developing its resources, which has been in discussions with the Venezuelan government to do a joint cryptocrude offering that would include the tar sands oil in Alberta.
Avian Turbines
Birds, while an important part of our ecosystem, may not be used to their full potential. People are beginning to ask “could we be utilizing them more?” One company, Birdines, is looking for creative ways to do so. They have been exploring the concept of attaching a small wind turbine onto birds on long flight paths to harness a bit of wind energy.
While it might not seem like a bird could produce very much energy, with multiple flocks Birdines has shown that they could produce a sufficient amount of energy to run their production facility. The big challenge is how to harness that energy. They are working on a number of ideas ranging from wireless transmission to small batteries. As a first step, they are planning to place test turbines on a number of birds at the start of their migration, track the levels of energy generated during flight, and send collectors to bring back equipment for further evaluation. (See Fig. 1.) Engineers have worked tirelessly to ensure that these wind turbines will not affect the birds’ flight or safety. In fact, one interesting finding from their studies is that the turbines actually make the birds more attractive to their mates, which has helped get PETA onboard as a supporter of the effort. Over time, as their design becomes more widely used, they are predicting that it will be possible to power companies all over the world along the flight paths of these migratory birds.

Young Aspiring Female Engineer Merges Robotics and AI
California has its fair share of geniuses but they seem to congregate in the entertainment industries. However, at one dedicated technical high school, Ms. Noel Hayley, an aspiring engineer, has been turning heads with her research and independent school projects. She’s won several competitions for engineering challenges including building bridges out of popsicle sticks, producing energy from ocean currents, etc. But more recently she has turned her intellectual curiosity and technical prowess to robotics and AI.
Building robots using 3-D printing technology has been straightforward enough, but the AI part has presented a number of challenges. Most surprising, one day, in the lab, while listening to a radio segment with Bill Nye and Justin Trudeau (the Prime Minister of Canada), the robotic arm she was working on took on an unorthodox pose (see Fig. 2).
Fig. 2 – Robotic Arm Malfunction
“I haven’t been able to figure out why this happened. I ran some more experiments with other speakers – the arm behaved properly,” said Ms. Hayley. “Then I ran a different speech by the PM and the same malfunction occurred. Again and again, every time that I played a speech by the PM of Canada, the robot defaulted to this position.”  Although Ms. Hayley was dumbfounded as to this behavior, she started getting requests form Canadians for copies of the robot arm, “as is”. Ms. Hayley is still working on developing the robot for oil and gas work, but in the meantime has started a side business selling copies of the malfunctioning robot to folks in Canada. “For some reason, they especially like these in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Newfoundland.”
Bio Power to the Rescue!
For some years now, scientists and keepers at the Tennessee Aquarium have been using an electric eel to power the lights of a Christmas tree.  Researchers at Tennessee Tech and Oak Mound National Laboratory have now taken that one step further and believe that they can harness sufficient power from eels for long distance trucking and that the whole system can be biology-based and totally carbon neutral. One huge benefit is the elimination of recharge time during long hauls. Since eels eat virtually anything that can fit in their mouths, the EEL-V driver needs to only stop for a meal or bathroom break, throw a bucket of small fish, shrimp, fly larvae, or any other protein source into the tank and get right back on the road. A photo showing the EEL-V prototype during road tests is shown in Fig. 3 in which the first module contains eels in water, which generate power to propel the truck down the road. The second module is the actual cargo trailer.

Organic Storage of Renewable Energy
About a year ago, researchers at a Texas university announced a breakthrough in energy storage that combines solar gathering with thermal release. In the year since, numerous other research initiatives have focused on such molecular solar thermal storage systems. One such promising technology is being developed by Dr. Yudun Phul Mi, research lead at the Coshocton Institute for Carbon Research (CICR). Dr. Mi has announced a novel means of energy storage and quotes: “Renewable energy is great. It’s clean and there is enough of it to power the world. The problem is that it’s intermittent.”  Dr. Mi continues, “We’ve developed a novel means to store renewable energy using organic, plant based starches as feedstock.” According to Dr. Mi and his colleagues, the process of storing energy in starches is simple, and it would also be possible to capture atmospheric carbon into the new material. The key breakthrough that has eluded many researchers has been how to compactly store the new energy-dense material. “Our team,” Dr. Mi continues, “realized that arranging the starches in layers and then subjecting them to pressure and temperature would yield a semi-solid.” In simplest terms, see Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 – Renewable Energy Storage Using Starches
When asked about the energy storage potential, Dr. Mi explained that it was about 24 MJ / kg and that it would store energy for many years. “On a larger scale, we could even bury it for future populations to unearth as needed in 10, 100, or even 1000 years in the future. Of course, we still have to figure out how to burn it without emitting the carbon dioxide and other pollutants back into the atmosphere.” Additional research is being undertaken at CICR to determine whether the process could be modified to yield liquid energy stores that could then be pumped into underground reservoirs or porous sand deposits.
Harvesting the Energy from Crop Circles
Professor Emeritus Albus Dumblebee at HST (Hoagmoles School of Technology) in Edinburgh, UK, who has spent most of his career researching crop circles has developed a new concept for harvesting energy from these circles. Despite claims from some that the circles are created by alien visitors to the earth and from others that such phenomena are hoaxes, Professor Dumblebee believed that there was a more natural basis for the circles. After extensive research and excavation at a number of circles in the UK, he reported that he had found a highly concentrated radioactive source buried under several of these circles. Laboratory testing of these sources shows that they emit a pulsating spherical radiation field and that the perimeter of the crop circle coincides with the location where the peak energy pulse intersects the surface of the earth. Thus, the larger the point radiation source and the shallower it is buried, the larger the manifestation of the crop circle.
With this new understanding of how the crop circles are made, he has developed the concept of a large-scale partial-sphere flux capacitor (see Fig. 5). The partial-sphere flux capacitor will fit exactly on the crop circle which will allow it to capture the radioactive energy from each pulse generated by the buried radioactive source. Professor Dumblebee is currently working on the mechanism to convert the captured radioactive energy into electricity and feed it into the electrical grid. He believes that a field of 5 typical crop circles can generate enough electricity to displace approximately 100MW of conventional fossil fuel driven power plants, thus helping the world move toward a fossil fuel free future.

Canadian Researchers Make Major Renewable Energy Breakthrough
Research from the Cape and the Rock have made a significant breakthrough in renewable power efficiency from wind and wave. At a press conference to reveal their breakthrough, team members summarized the technology as combining a bunny hug or doeskin with a vi-co. “We had many smattes over many chiffes, subsisting at times on bines and jam-busters when we sure g’awn witcha. There was no takitish.” Said another researcher about the team effort, “Lashins tof till I was rawny, but we kept the jinkers out of there so we wouldn’t be huffed: Soon enough it was full flye duckish.” Canadian government officials on hand were like buckle bunnies with new gotch: It was skookum tickety-boo. Research will be published in the upcoming quarterly journal of Timmies.

Robots Moving Into Meatpacking Plants Face AI Challenges
Robot meat cutters are coming for some of the 39 million chickens processed by Tyson Foods each week. The robot-makers are challenged to make the AI more powerful. (Photo by Dave Sandoval on Unsplash)
By John P. Desmond, AI Trends Editor
The pandemic is an excuse for many things. If ever there was a time to supplement (or replace, unfortunately) workers in meatpacking plants in the US, this might be it. But whether the robots are smart enough is a question posed by at least one professor.
The coronavirus has set up the acceleration of a move to have robots do more work in meat cutting plants. In April and May, more than 17,300 meat and poultry processing workers in 29 states were infected and 91 died, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as quoted recently in The Wall Street Journal. US beef and pork production was reduced by more than a third in April as a result.
The work is dangerous for humans, using knives and saws to work on carcasses moving down production lines, for an average pay of $16 per hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The meatpackers have invested to make the workers safer, with protective equipment and workplace partitions, and many have boosted the pay to get the workers to stay.
A longer-term solution for the meatpackers is to bring in the robots. At a former truck maintenance shop near the Springdale, Ark. headquarters of Tyson Foods, company engineers and scientists are pushing into robotics.
The Tyson team is working on an automated deboning system to handle some of the 39 million chickens processed by Tyson each week. Tyson has approximately 122,000 employees to process 20% of the chicken, beef and pork produced in the US. The Tyson Manufacturing Automation Center opened in August 2019, as part of $500 million invested in technology and automation in the last three years. The pandemic will likely cause the pace to be accelerated, Tyson CEO Noel White has said.
The entire meatpacking industry is likely to accelerate automation. “Everybody’s thinking about it, and it’s going to increase,” stated Decker Walker, a managing director with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), who works with meatpackers.
The workers are close together. Workers per square 1,000 feet in meatpacking are three times the average of US manufacturing, according to BCG. This is due to the fact that the industry has not been able to better automate due to the complexity of the task. Humans are better able to cut animal carcasses that differ in size and shape. Finer cutting, such as trimming fat, remains in the hands of human workers and is critical to the bottom line.
A skilled loin boner, for example, can carve a cut of filet mignon without leaving too many scraps on the bone, which are turned into lower-valued products used in hamburger or dog food, stated Mark Lauritsen, an international VP for the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, which represents many meatpacking workers.
Mark Lauritsen, International VP, United Food and Commercial Workers International Union
“Labor is still cheaper, and humans can do those skilled jobs much better than machines can,” he stated.
A tight labor market has caused the meatpackers to invest in automation; the pandemic is only accelerating the trend. But teaching the machines to recognize and quickly adjust to meat coloration and shape, makes meat processing for robots more difficult than assembling cars from uniform parts. In meat plants, “our parts are infinitely variable,” stated Marty Linn, previously the principal engineer of robotics for General Motors, who joined Tyson last year to help direct its automation efforts.
Texas A&M Professor Skeptical that the Robots Can Learn Needed Skills
A Texas A&M University professor is skeptical about the potential for robot automation in meatpacking plants.
“It would take almost too much AI for the robot to figure out how the next animal is different from the last animal and to make all the millions of iterations that a human makes almost intuitively without really thinking about it,” stated Ty Lawrence, a professor of animal and meat science at West Texas A&M University, in a recent account in Brownfield. “It would take a fair number of photo eyes and/or end motion sensors because every animal is completely unique.”
Marty Linn, Director, Tyson Manufacturing Automation Center
His preference is to keep the focus on maintaining the health of the workforce, so they can continue to work. “As long as the beef processors are able to pick up as many Saturdays as possible, they’ll be able to chew through the backlog of cattle that we have right now,” Prof. Lawrence stated.
For companies already invested in robots, the pandemic is causing them to work on extending their capabilities.
As the virus spread through Japan in March, for example, workers at a warehouse in Sugito that processes personal care products were overwhelmed by a spike in demand for masks, gloves, sap and hand sanitizer. The company operating the center, Paltac, introduced protection for workers such as masks, temperature checks and frequent decontaminations. Now the company plans to hire more robots as well, according to an account in Wired.
“We have to consider more automation, more use of robotics, in order for people to be spaced apart,” stated Shohei Matsumoto, deputy general manager of the company’s R&D division. “There are going to be fewer opportunities for humans to touch the items.”
Paltac has been using robots from a US company, RightHandRobotics (RHR) of Somerville, Mass., to pick objects from bins and assemble orders. Now the company is looking for software updates that will allow the robots to recognize and grasp new objects, or retrieve items from new types of bins, Matsumoto stated.
Recent advances in AI hold promise that robots will be able to take on tasks that require greater manual dexterity. RHR grew out of a team of researchers at the Harvard Biorobotics Lab, the Yale Grab Lab and MIT research in grasping systems, intelligent hardware sensors, computer vision and apple machine learning. The firm intends to bring the latest technological developments from the lab to the warehousing industry, with the idea of transforming the supply chain.

10 reasons to SMILE An old friend reminded me of a quote by the playwright David Mamet that I used to refer to often in my youth: “A man with style is a man who can smile.” It reminded me to go back and find a few photos that make me smile. 1. Me and @jose6omez, a decade ago, when we got together again to work on a film project together. I met Jose in 1990 or 1991, on a demo tour, when he was introduced to me by @onefelix. He was a 15-year old peanut-head skater and graff writer from Miami, and we collaborated on many projects together from that day on, across multiple brands and industries. 2. Me and Marvin Minski at MIT in the late 2000’s. I knew of Minski as the father of AI, and got to connect for a laugh and chat with him about an alternative to electric vehicles once while I was speaking on mass customization at the MIT Design Lab @mitdesignlab. 3. The sweet surprise of being in an art show at the Museum of Design Atlanta @modatl alongside the infamous @mrolson, one of the all-time style masters, and running into the OG Rancheros or Atlanta, Tommy “Keep the God damn raccoons outta my truck” Kay. 4. Solo smile up high in the sky 5. My son, when he found an amazing tree while we were walking together one day. 6. @thetonyalva1957 @christianhosoi and me, when I ran into them randomly in a German airport on my way back from a speaking engagement in Berlin. Literally ran into these old homies by chance walking through the airport. 7/8. A visit from the fairies, @patriciaarquette came to my daughter’s birthday party and literally Brough an entire fairy house which she set up in the flower bed in the yard. Then she came in and got Love and brought her out and introduced her to the fairies. So sweet. 9. @sand.manatee @shebuddha Love and me holding a giant snake for Loves birthday. Every year for 5 years my kids each wanted a visit from the Reptile Family for their birthday parties. That family brought so much joy. 10. @saiz5412 me and @chrispastras one night at a bar in Silver Lake (I think). Had a great time catching up and hanging with two guys that had a big impact on me with their skating and creativity. Work Futures Daily - Marching Backwards Into The Future
The anthropology of the future is the study of ourselves. | Claude Lévi-Strauss
2018-04-09 Beacon NY - Yesterday, I touched on David Evans' thoughts on being a futurist.
'Futurist' sounds somewhat pretentious, so I often say I am a anthropologist of the future, or a work ecologist, because ecology and anthropology, while 'soft' sciences, are not so squishy as 'futurology' is.
In the piece, yesterday I used the Marshall McLuhan quote:
We look at the present through a rear-view mirror. We march backwards into the future.
and I noted that when we look into McLuhan’s rear-view mirror we are seeing ourselves just as much as the road behind. And that looking at ourselves in the rearview mirror, that self-study, that's the anthropology I am up to, whatever name you call it.

On Automation, Walmart, and the World
The great debate about automation's role in decreasing work is unresolved, but new research suggests it is decreasing the proportion of money flowing to workers, even if it is not decreasing the total number of jobs:
Walmart has doubled its use of self-checkouts in stores, according to a recent investor presentation, and newly remodeled locations have fewer lanes staffed with a cashier. What’s more, inside its Store No. 8 incubator, which is experimenting with technologies such as robotics, virtual and augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, Walmart is, according to Recode, developing Project Kepler—a store similar to Amazon Go with no checkout lines or cashiers.
In theory, automation doesn’t have to eliminate jobs, on balance, or drive down worker pay. It could free up workers to do higher value, better-paid tasks. It could generate consumer demand and create new categories of jobs.
David Autor of MIT and Anna Salomons of Utrecht University recently published a study on automation that examined data on 28 industries in 18 countries in the OECD. They find that, since 1970, automation hasn’t reduced jobs—in fact, it has slightly increased them. But since the beginning of the 2000s, automation has reduced workers’ share of national income. “This finding is consistent with automation having become in recent decades less labor-augmenting and more labor-displacing,” they write.
According to their research, workers’ employment, hours, or wages haven’t fallen. But wages have risen less rapidly than overall economic growth, with owners getting an increasingly large share. Autor suggests this trend could continue as automation increases. “No, the robots will not take all of our jobs,” he says in a Brookings video. “The concern should not be about the number of jobs, but whether those jobs are jobs that can support a reasonable standard of living.”
Walmart envisions a future of retail with far fewer workers on the floor, and while those may be better compensated, many of the people involved in the supply chain to get groceries from their point of origin to your home may be on demand freelancers, working for Uber-esque services that Walmart doesn't directly control. Or replaced by partially or fully automated steps in the supply chain, like autonomous trucks, warehouse robots, and drone delivery services.
Walmart is the brick-and-mortar retail chain who is investing the most time and effort into the game-changing revolution that Amazon is bringing online. Expect massive disruption, economically and societally.
Over at the MIT Technology Review, Will Knight calls the US government to wake up to the threat of other governments investing huge amounts in AI, like China, France, and others, so that we don't fall behind in basic research. He takes a few paragraphs away from his breathless techno-utopianism to mention possible negatives, but only a few:
But a government AI policy must go beyond calls for research funding.
While AI can drive economic growth, it may also accelerate the eradication of some occupations, transform the nature of work in other jobs, and exacerbate economic inequality (see "The relentless pace of automation"). It is critical that governments prepare for this transformation. This might mean exploring ways to find training and employment opportunities for those who have lost jobs to automation and AI. Academic experts and institutions have been sounding the alarm over this issue and have warned that it might have serious social consequences. Those problems will surely require government action.
"Planning for job displacement that AI will cause is best done by government," says Andrew Ng, a prominent AI researcher who was previously the chief scientist at Baidu and is now involved with several different AI projects.
The big problem with this minimal backstop to the impacts of automation is that there are functionally zero good examples of such broad retraining. As a result, the comment by Andrew Ng is useless: it doesn't matter who does the planning for job displacement if retraining doesn't work well.
Of course, that sentiment could just be a smokescreen, allowing that enormous and increaingly profitable tech multinationals to externalize the costs of social disruption by automation, while increasingly poor governments, starved of capital by endless austerity budgets and low corporate tax rates, struggle or completely fail to accomplish the retraining.
On Network Publicy Governance
I was mentioned in a tweet today, thanking me for inspiration for a 2018 Digital Society book, Network Publicy Governance. My contribution was the term 'publicy' and the concept behind it.
I have not read the book in its entirety, just scanned it, but the authors, Andreá Belliger and David Krieger, are motivated by this goal:
The occasion for this book is the growing conflict between the call for a “data-driven” society on the one side and the demand for ensuring individual freedom, autonomy, and dignity by means of protecting privacy on the other. Gathering and exploiting data of all kinds in ever greater quantities promises to create value and efficiency in business, education, healthcare, social services, energy, transportation, and almost all other areas of society. But at the same time, fears of loss of privacy lead to ever more prohibitive regulations.
The Facebook Follies show up again.
They go on:
It would seem that we are entering the 21st Century with society divided into those who believe that as much information as possible should be integrated into decision-making in all areas and at all levels and those who believe that human freedom, autonomy, and even dignity depend on secrecy and the withholding of as much information as possible. This book is an attempt to analyze the causes of this deep conflict in Western societies. Furthermore, it attempts to offer a perspective on how we might move forward into a world which is at once based on data and on a self-understanding of the human individual as an informational self whose freedom and dignity do not depend on privacy.
[...]
We will not rehearse the usual narrative of freedom, autonomy, and dignityin terms of inequalities and power struggles between weak individuals on the one side and overpowering corporations and governments on the other. Instead, we will attempt to reformulate these issues in terms of networks.
[…]
From the network perspective, social theory in general and privacy discourse, in particular, can no longer proceed from the assumption that weare dealing with clearly bounded unities, whether individual, organizational, or governmental. When actors become networks, that is, when actors are constituted in networks and exist as networks, then they enter into a condition that can be considered to be the “default” condition of humans in society. This condition, following Stowe Boyd, can be termed “publicy.” Publicy is not publicity. It is not the state of being known, but the condition of being an informational self. In contrast to the essentially private individual of Western modernity, the informational self is not an isolated individual that somehow secondarily enters into social contracts, but a hybrid and heterogeneous ensemble of associations that are always already social. The informational self is constitutively linked up to others, both human and nonhuman.
Just an introduction to the book, which seems to be freely available on Academia.edu.
Those interested in publicy might enjoy this, The Decade Of Publicy, and Secrecy, Privacy, Publicy, or this piece from the NY Times about the term, Schott's Vocab: Publicy.
On Life
Via Warren Ellis, Vadik Marmeladov's Code Of Practice
Wear the uniform
Think long term (like 30 years from now)
Build stories and languages, not things
Create your own universe (or join ours)
Collect samples
Be a sample for somebody else
Look for loyalty, not for a skill set
Do not build utilitarian products. However, use them as a medium to express yourself
Do not exploit introverts — doesn't work long term. Learn to be an introvert yourself
Travel more
Do not work for corporations. Old corporations were meaningful when their founders were alive, but now, they have outlived their relevancy. They exist only to keep their numbers growing
New corporations are no better. They have scaled up features, and today’s founders want hyper-growth for growth’s sake (it seems like every line of code, every feature deserves its own corporation — it sure doesn't)
So, fuck the corporations
Tell the truth (bullshit never works long term)
Study and research fashion
Your phone is a temporary feature — don’t spend your life on it (like you wouldn’t spend it on a fax machine)
Fuck likes, followers, fake lives, fake friends
Remake your environment. Build it for yourself, and people will come
Only trust those who make things you love
Move to LA
Don’t buy property
Don’t go to Mars (just yet)
Use only one font, just a few colors, and just a few shapes
Use spreadsheets, but only to map out 30 cells — one for each year of the rest of your life
The next three are the most important
The past doesn’t exist — don’t get stuck in it
Don’t go to Silicon Valley (it’s not for you if you’re still reading this)
Remind yourself daily: you and everyone you know will die
We must build the most beautiful things
We are 2046 kids
