Thoughts about Bound by Briar

It's time once again for me to ramble about what happens after a fic is over!

This is one of the few chaptered fics I've written that doesn't have an epilogue chapter. Sacerdos also doesn't have one, but Dark Fire/From the Ashes and Dyed Dark as Night (as well as the upcoming vampire AU) do. To be honest with you, I struggled with this ending. I wrote like two or three variations before going for this one, which I felt was more fun and more… in character. Plus, I think it offers something the endings in other fics of mine don't, which is also important to me.

Anyway, onto my thoughts.

So, what happens next?

Well, the dynamic between Malleus and Rollo is shifting even further. Pet/owner to vassal and suzerain to... something else. It may look like Malleus has the power from the outside looking in, but he's ceding more and more of it over time. Rollo knows he has an immense amount of sway when it comes to Malleus and he isn't interested in giving that up. He really has nothing else: he can't go home, he can't avenge Jehan (because he can't destroy magic), so what remains? Malleus. Thus, Rollo will dig his claws into him as deeply as possible. In fact… I'd say that this Rollo would (eventually) even accept being transformed into a fae like in DDAN so that he won't have to relinquish Malleus.

Though, I will say, when Rollo figures out what the magestone ring Malleus gave him does he's going to flip the fuck out. He hardly uses magic, so I don't think he'd notice for a while, especially if the main magic he uses is attuned to him (the flames) and thus produces a miniscule amount of blot. I could have covered his eventual discovery in this fic, but I just didn't want to. It'd cascade into a lot of complicated stuff outside the scope of a weird unhealthy romance story. Whether or not Malleus/the fae will agree to maybe start disseminating these magestone rings to humans, that's an issue. I could see Malleus agreeing (purely because Rollo wants it), but will the queen? Maybe they'll start a smuggling operation… Like, they acquire the stones, slip them to the Queendom, and then the Queendom surges in power and dominates the other countries. Lots of consequences here. Maybe other countries will attack the fae in earnest to get their hands on the stones? Talk about a mess. But it would be funny if the Shaftlands, having sacrificed ships and manpower basically to fuck mages over, find themselves significantly weakened in this new magic-safe(r) world. Whoops! Eat shit!

Another key question I imagine some people might have is: does Rollo love Malleus? I think he does, in a way. But it's warped. Not only does he know he has the upper hand (as in, Malleus loves Rollo more than Rollo loves Malleus), but it's not like Rollo got to choose Malleus over everyone else--he has no other options. He's definitely attracted to him, of course. I just think that there's no starting from 0 with Rollo, he will always remember how their relationship started and how Malleus treated him. His love for Malleus is possessive and at least partially born out of survival. When that threat fades in his memory, he'll chill out some. But he'll never forget.

Will Malleus and Rollo have kids? Maybe. I think Rollo would be into the idea after a few years since it would give him another purpose in life (not to mention it would mean claiming Malleus even further). But I also think that Rollo would have to accept being a concubine. A concubine who's also a vassal...

What if Malleus has to take a fae wife? Rollo would manipulate Malleus as hard as he possibly can, ensuring that he spends little time with her. Maybe to the point that he has 0 legitimate children and instead has a handful with Rollo. I do like the idea of things getting extra fucked up because of the introduction of a wife, but it also makes me sad, so. Whoever this lady is, she doesn't deserve the horrible schemes Rollo would cook up. Best case scenario, Malleus tells her something like, "Look, I'm in love with my human, so this marriage is purely for show/the alliance/whatever. Appear at official events with me, but otherwise we shouldn't spend much time together. We likely won't even consummate this marriage." Hopefully she's cool with that. We wouldn't want any competition between heirs, now, would we... And well, it would be a nice sort of vengeance for Rollo to 'taint' the royal bloodline forever.

The gargoyles become good friends with Malle, but Rollo won't let him hang around them more than he deems necessary. Rollo visits them maybe more often because he does the cleaning.

All in all, they basically make each other worse. Rollo isolates Malleus from others while Malleus is content to get the majority, if not all, of his emotional needs met by Rollo. Meaning the threat of him leaving/dying is huge and one Malleus won't be able to bear in the future. Rollo accomplishes none of his initial goals and lives a life that is, no matter what, ultimately up to the whims of Malleus and the other fae. The whole 'human expert' thing is a job Malleus made for him, more or less. And he'll never see Fleur City ever again. He has little to worry about regarding Malleus' affection... for now. Something, or someone, could happen at any time, so he'll have to be vigilant.

Not quite a bad end, not quite a good end. They'll stay together in a codependent relationship until one of them dies.

Some of you may be curious as to the other endings I tried out. Well, in one, I was going to have Rollo accept Trey's offer and stealthily head to the docks. I thought about having him turn back on his own or having Malleus confront him there. It felt... predictable? Played out, maybe? It just didn't work for me. Another version involved Rollo reading the letter with Malleus in the room, with him learning about the content and, of course, freaking out. I also wrote a thing where Rollo and Malleus ride a horse (Rollo at the reins, Malleus behind him) together, but I can't remember where that was supposed to go. A lot of unused chunks... I even wrote out a scene where Rollo actually was leading the diplomacy effort and talking with Trey and company in their little house tree, but it deviated a lot from mallerollo time and I went, "Would anyone want to read this...?" and scrapped it. Plus I don't think it makes a ton of sense for the fae to entrust that job to Rollo so quickly.

Maybe some of those failed endings sound more appealing than what I went with, but they simply weren't working out. When I've written something and I keep avoiding continuing it, like I'll reread it and go "ugh" and do something else, that's how I know it isn't going to happen. Procrastination's normal, but I should want to continue a particular scene and it shouldn't be like pulling teeth. And if I do force myself to write something I'm not into, it'll be of lesser quality. Basically.... if I'm not having fun writing it, no one will have any reading it.

If anyone has any questions about the story or anything really, I'd be happy to answer. I know the pacing of the last few chapters was a bit speedy... so I wouldn't be surprised if there were aspects that people found confusing.

AAAAAAA Mystic Messenger....... every summer, I play it just so I can get more hourglasses to finally unlock Saeran's route. I'm vaguely familiar with what happens, but even so I need to play it. T_T the same goes for Jumin's route. I want that bad ending!!!! OTL I have played Zen's route so many times in the past because he gives the most hourglasses. He's so engraved in my brain hehe. <3 I love him. And Jaehee!!!! When I played her route, I kept thinking, "Why does she keep friend-zoning us? We're so obviously in love." >:( let Jaehee love the player!!! It's what she deserves. <3 aaaa and Yoosung!! He's the cutest. :D

Mammon is my number one!!!! Something about greedy and pathetic men is just so *chef's kiss,* so it makes sense I'd inevitably simp for Mammon and Azul lol. But then Satan and Belphegor are so !!!!!! When the latter was manipulating us and planning to trick us all along when we found him in the attic. :) oooooo he's the worst. I need him. I should play Obey Me again just to see Mammon and Belphegor hehe. I have no idea what is happening in the story now, but I heard there were new characters added and I also saw a few things regarding Nightbringer! Omg but your comments on Jade and Barbatos... Again not really much to say here! We got some character details, some worldbuilding details, lots of character development & solidification of relationships, and now some immediate threads to be followed up on (Vash's arm and the Plant reveal thing). Feeling much more invested than when I started the series and interested in seeing how this conversation goes!

I will say. The plant did not look uh. very intimidating. kind of reminds me of the... neopets fairies? I don't think that's right, but like some similar franchise kind of had similar vibes, shape-wise.

...is this the first time the Plant stuff got fully revealed in the show? I went in knowing and haven't been keeping track. I know it was established that Vash is a) non-human b) fell from a spaceship onto the planet and c) had 'relatives' in pods on said spaceship. Not to mention his twin also having pretty obvious markings. But I'm curious about the reasons for the pacing of these reveals, since we got so much of Wolfwood's backstory just last episode.

Something I've really noticed as of late? The dialogue a lot of times in TWST is extremely awkward and doesn't flow right.

For one, some scenes have extremely awkward exposition, making the dialogue not flow out naturally. At the start of the Opening Ceremony, all of the dorm leaders spout out the values of their dorms to the other students. None of comes off as natural. It comes off as forced and awkward. A better choice would've been to cut straight to Crowley and Yuu's entrance and added their reactions to this new student that way it shows off their personalities in a more organic way.

Characters also often pause everything to admire or spill their thoughts about something, even when it makes no sense. Take Vil's character introduction. When he shows up for the first time in the main story, everyone pauses and admires about how beautiful he looks for a minute. It's just...weird. Why the hell are they stopping to admiring him like that? Especially since he's a mere human in the canon and can't charm them into adoring him based on looks alone. Being startled and being taken aback for a second, sure. But not full out simping. Same thing happens during the Opening Ceremony when Crowley shouts out his shock about Yuu not having any magic and the Ebony Carriage picking them up in front of everyone. I think Jamil talking to himself is also a byproduct of this since he does this all the time.

This also creates moments that come off as OOC. In Glorious Masquerade, when Rollo shows up, Epel says, "He's not smiling at all. Is he pissed about something?" right in front of him. Like, what? Why did he say that? Epel is a crude country boy, but he still knows tact and when to keep his mouth shut, especially when he's a guest. It's not just him who does this. Deuce, Silver and even Professor Trein make similar tactless comments about Rollo to his face. Hell, I'm surprised that Rollo never called them all out for being so rude.

Granted, I think a lot of this has to do with the visual novel format, so I don't completely blame Yana for this. But it's something that I REALLY noticed while writing my own fix-it rewrite and trying to change in my own work.

I don't think anything of signifigence to the main plot is going to happen in Glorious Masquerade. After all it is an event, all the event are their own contained things that do not impact the main plot. So I wouldn't worry too much about this as a long term thing.

I've seen people theorize that Malleus is actually going to be Quasimodo and Yuu is going to be Esmeralda. Which I think thematically works. Malleus, like Quasi, is lonely gargoyle lover that wants to participate in the festivities and make friends. Yuu, as the Esmeralda, is the first real friend outside of his bubble that Malleus makes that treats him like a person. And then you have Rollo, who may or may not have something against fae or people who are not human. But the thing that makes me halt with this, is Rollo and Yuus connection. Because while I don't think theyre going to go full tilt creepy into the obsessive lust plot, I don't see why Rollo would have much interest in Yuu. Because while thinking about this i've noticed that Yuu is more or less a bystander to the main plot, they are the vessel in which we experience the story. But in terms of what they actually do, is left to be vauge and up in the air. We don't even know whey Yuu is here, and the main cast doesn't really pay them much mind or treat them different from anyone else. The plot doesn't happen because of Yuu, it happens and Yuu just has to experience it. So I don't see what special interest Rollo would have in them. But that's just me, i could be wrong.

I think the thing that is most likely is, Malleus is both the Quasimodo and the Esmeralda. Several characters in twst take on the characteristics or roles of other traditional Disney characters. (Silver has traits of both Phillip and Aroura. Trey likes hats like the mad hatter. etc) So Rollo has intrest in Malleus for whatever reason, like Frollo and Esmeralda, but he also has traits of Quasimodo like i said. Malleus and Yuu may have some time to talk to mirror their friendship in the movie, but i don't think it's going to be a 1:1 recreation of hunchback, because none of the books are perfect recreations of the movies. But I think both Yuu and Malleus are going to exhibit traits of Quasi and Esmerelda, just in different ways.

As for plot, my guess that I'm pretty sure is almost everyone's guess, is that it's going to follow the them of prejudice and racism from Hunchback. Maybe Rollo specifically has some sort of Fae hang up and sees Malleus as the embodiment of all these things he hates. Like the feast of fools in the movie, I think something is going to go wrong in the masquerade. Maybe not something horrendously bad, but something that is going to rain on Malleus parade and upset him, like with Quasi. and like Esmerelda, Yuu is going to be there to be his friend and help him. Meanwhile Rollos obsession with whatever he want's Malleus for is going to grow. Though I will throw out, maybe Yuu also fills the Phoebus role in a way. Maybe Rollo enlists Yuu as part of the student planning thing to give them something to do under the guise of building better school relations and thats how we see first hand how unhinged he is. And then at the climax of the events plot, we turn from Rollo like Phoebus did to Frollo, and go to warn Malleus and the others of what's going on.

Just giving my 2 cents to the "Rollo discourse". I have not read any direct TLs yet so I'm just gonna talk about what reactions I've seen so far.

Honestly, I think people are getting heated up way too early. Like, I know writing your thoughts and opinions on current events is how a fandom works but how the hell did this big quarrel came to be when not everything is out yet? Especially if one considers how the other villains have been treated until now.

People are absolutely justified to be wary of Rollo. His character is based on Frollo, who in turn is based on real history, people and sadly current reality. Racism AND religious trauma usually make a very difficult object to portray correctly. And considering it's not only Disney but also Japan working on this game, it is quite fair to be even more wary as there have been plenty of times, where such problems are downplayed or not taken seriously enough. Whether it be to ignorance or conscious intentions.

The other villains have done terrible things as well but they do have a more detached feel to them bc of whooooooo~ ☆magic☆ and all or it's just way too long back. And...

With that said, we've already seen how The Great Seven have been handled. Their legacy has been twisted but the truth has always been shown to Yuu and their corresponding characters have always learned to move on from their mistakes (without knowing it ofc). Not saying that Rollo is definitely going to become a good guy or that any wrongdoings are excusable bc of a tRagIc BAcKsToRy.

Riddle probably gave quite a few students a lot of anxiety and breakdowns, Leona almost turned Ruggie into sand, Azul made a lot of very shady and definitely gruelling deals, Jamil almost killed us and brainwashed a bunch of students, Vil almost poisened Neige, just to list some things here. All had their reasons but that doesn't strip them of their responsibilities.

Riddle vowed to maintain order in a more just and less tyrannical way, Leona tries to be more of a responsible leader to be proud of (for his dorm), Azul realised his unreasonable idea of revenge, Jamil learned to be more open again and to communicate to solve problems, Vil picked himself up again and realised his tunnel vision of success. All with the help of trusted friends (and Overblot Service inc.). (Btw if it wasn't already noticable, I haven't watched ch. 6 yet heheh....)

Now, this event is, well, an event. So Rollo might not get as much character development as the overblot gang or at all in the worst case. But how about we try to stay calm and just WAIT patiently until everything is out.

There is no need to attack any developers or fans of Rollo. The majority aren't in support of persecuting any Romani people or white racists. They just want to enjoy this new content of a beloved game and are aware of his delicate nature while having fun.

And there is also no need to attack any of those who feel uncomfortable with Rollo. Not everyone is a party pooper who wants to shit on this game given any opportunity. They just want to continue to enjoy this game they've become invested in and not see real life problems, maybe even personal trauma, handled in an a familiary unfair way in a game supposed to comfort them.

Everyone just wants to have fun and enjoy this cool game about hot and hilarious animefied disney character, so let's wait and discuss in a civil manner when the time comes ^3^) / 🌸 Haven't seen any yet but just to be safe, sending death threats and bullying people out of the internet is not accepteble E V E R!!! Fiction does have a certain effect on real life but your direct actions hold a much larger impact on real living breathing human beings.
