Okay, started listening to Mabel podcast on my commute so here's just a few thoughts from the first 3 episodes

Ok so context. Hideaway is/was a social hub Minecraft server, kinda like Club Penguin, that existed for about a year in 2023-24. It made major impacts in the MC server scene- and then has had an ongoing onslaught of one internal issue after another and has Shrödinger's Minecraft server (in progress and dead until observed by an outside force) for about a year now.

I am not part of the Hideaway team, but I BASICALLY run the Discord thats been all but abandoned by anyone with staff role that wasnt removed during one of multiple team switches. Ive been answering the "what happened to the server?" Questions for the last 6 months, patiently explaining the history, correcting false information and genuinely just holding nice conversations with people who give the time of day to start one

(Spellbrook is a WIP server from the OG Hideaway team I'm also semi-active in but I'm not active pretty much every say for months doing a mods' job without the role)

I also play Wynncraft, and I also make Minecraft skins! So I saw this, applied, was clicking around doing casual research and...

You gonna do anything or make any statement about the rampant transmisogyny on this hellsite, especially in cases like predstrogen recently? Or yall gonna stay silent and keep letting/making us get pushed off of it.

I have a number of asks about this, so this is to address all of them, I won't do each individually.

We generally do not comment on individual cases, but because there seems to be mass misinformation around this, I will make an exception and comment on predstrogen.

First, Tumblr has a number of LGBT+ including trans people on staff, and they see things from the inside fully, and they're not protesting this case.

Why do we wrongly have a transphobe reputation? We did have an external contract moderator last year that was making transphobic moderation (and also selling moderation, criminally). As soon as we were aware that person was fired, and we later terminated the entire relationship with that contracting firm and have brought almost everything in-house (at great cost). I have previously commented on this publicly, several times.

I am not aware of any Automattician (people who work at Automattic and Tumblr) who has made any transphobic moderation actions. If it's reported it is investigated immediately, if anything were found that person would be terminated for cause immediately.

Predstrogen's account was suspended for:

Repeated mis-tagging of adult content against Tumblr's community guidelines. This has nothing to do with clothed transition photos, she had 20+ other blogs and multiple accounts with names so explicit I can't post them here without a mature tag.

Multiple cases of harassment of other Tumblr users, not just me.

Multiple threats of violence, not just the one I share below.

These represent a breach of our Terms of Service, and we've exercised our right to refuse service.

Threats of violence are never okay. Threats of violence are not protected speech. We will work with police and FBI where appropriate, though to be clear prestrogen's case hasn't warranted that so far. I'm referring to what we may potentially do for other threats. I just got a death threat yesterday from someone mad about predstrogen, and that account was immediately terminated.

So regardless of whether you still think Tumblr staff is somehow a bunch of transphobes, know that threats of violence or death are still not acceptable and will result in immediate and serious action. Know that when you rile people up, they can do dumb things with possibly permanent consequences.

(2 hours later update: I have changed instances of the pronoun "they" or "their" to "the account" because I am unaware of pronoun preference in this instance and don't want to misgender anyone. Thank you for the people who reported this as an issue. Update 2: "She" is apparently better, the post now says that. Sorry for the mistake.)

Here's one (of many!) examples of the harassment violations, this one targets me but there are others targeting other users on the site.

The second part seems to indicate she wanted to be suspended, I'm unaware of why, perhaps to create this sort of uproar. I agree the hammers feel silly, but the start, "i hope photomatt dies forever a painful death" is a violation of Tumblr's community guidelines and terms of service.

The car part did hit close to home as I have almost died twice in car accidents.

he also had the most names written down. but he was starting to get bored of it, bored of sleeping around with girls who were so predictable, who didn't require any work. who'd get on their knees for him immediately even if he called them by the wrong name. easy girls.

rafe brought the joint away from his lips, blowing smoke out slowly, his eyes half-lidded in thought. he turned to topper, tutting his lips, "top, aren't you getting bored of this shit?"

topper's tongue was too busy being stuck down some drunk girl's throat as she straddled his lap, grinding into him like a bitch in heat, but topper pushed her lips away from his, turning to his friend breathlessly, "bored of what?"

I don't know why but I'm obsessed with Abbot hiding the fact that he has a wife from everyone. Here's my first take on it, more to follow.

summary: A famous singer has a benefit concert nearby, and its being streamed at the Pitt. The Pitt-crew make a lot of comments about her, but they come to regret it before the shift is over... poor Shen.

"Hey Dr. Abbot, you wanna put on the benefit concert on the television tonight? That singer you like is closing it"

Jack Abbot looked up from his phone and into Shen's face incredulously. "That singer I like?"

"Yeah, you know her. I've heard you whistle her songs a lot these past months. You were humming her newest song last shift."

Jack raised his eyebrows, unaware that he had ever whistled within ten miles of his co-workers. He decided that playing it cool would be his best course of action. "Sure, put it on. Don't think will get much time to look at any of it during a full moon shift, but it can't hurt."

"Sweet!" Shen slurped the remainder of his iced coffee and turned to leave the break room. Robby came in at that moment. "Hey Dr. Robby, you heading to the benefit tonight? Heard that gorgeous singer's performing." Robby raised his eyebrows at Jack. "That gorgeous singer, huh? But no, I've got a date with my bed tonight. Talking about that gorgeous singer, why are you here Jack, aren't you supposed to be-" Jack raised his eyebrows back at him, looking at Shen over Robby's shoulder. "Any reason I'm not supposed to be here? I always work full moon shifts." Robby raised his hands in defeat, "Never mind, never mind, I'll keep your private life private, don't you worry."

Two hours later, a small group of staff had gathered in front of the TV next to the nurses' station. Through some miracle performed by a higher power, you could not call the ER busy on this full moon night, and they were spending their time looking at the concert. Jack kept himself busy by reading some update in a medical journal behind the desk, feigning disinterest in the concert. His eyes kept wondering to the screen, glancing to see what artist was performing.

"Ah, look," Said Ellis, leaning over the desk with a chart in her hand. "She's starting her performance. God, isn't she beautiful? I keep wondering what she'd be like in real life." Jack nodded at her. "Sure, she's one of a kind." His hand reached up to his necklace involuntarily, his thumb and forefinger tracing the ring that was on it. Ellis caught the movement and smiled at him. "Ooh, but not as pretty as your wife, I see how it is. You ever gonna tell us who this lady who was crazy enough to marry you is?" Jack muttered something under his breath and turned his attention back towards the journal in his hand.

Ten minutes later the crowd in front of the TV had grown even more. Jack wished he could do something about it, but there really was nothing else to do for the ER staff. He leaned back in his chair, eyes towards the screen, hand on the ring next to his Dog Tags.

"You know, they say she's married to a doctor. Some tiktoker posted about it a couple days ago. Had a whole list of evidence." He heard someone say, his grip tightened. "No way," scoffed one of the nurses, "She's way too hot for that. I'll bet you she's dating a sportsman of some kind, like a hockeyplayer or something. Someone buff and handsome. I'll put twenty bucks on it."

Shen agreed. "If i were her husband I wouldn't spend a second away from her, let alone a 12 hour shift. There's no way someone like her married a doctor."

Abbot took that moment to clear his throat, rather loudly, and any further comments were made at a lower volume. That didn't mean he couldn't hear them though.

When the singer was almost done with her performance, she gave her thanks to the organisers, stressing the importance of the charities the concert was supporting. The level of excitement rose when the ER staff realised she was going to sing one more song, one of her greatest hits.

"And to my darling husband, who couldn't be here tonight 'cause he's out there saving lives on a full moon, I thank you for always being my person, my love, my everything. I love you, Dr. Jack Abbot, this song is for you!"

Jack couldn't help a smirk crawling up his face when Shen turned around and looked absolutely terrified.

AI Scraping Isn't Just Art And Fanfic

Something I haven't really seen mentioned and I think people may want to bear in mind is that while artists are the most heavily impacted by AI visual medium scraping, it's not like the machine knows or cares to differentiate between original art and a photograph of your child.

AI visual media scrapers take everything, and that includes screengrabs, photographs, and memes. Selfies, pictures of your pets and children, pictures of your home, screengrabs of images posted to other sites -- all of the comic book imagery I've posted that I screengrabbed from digital comics, images of tweets (including the icons of peoples' faces in those tweets) and instas and screengrabs from tiktoks. I've posted x-ray images of my teeth. All of that will go into the machine.

That's why, at least I think, Midjourney wants Tumblr -- after Instagram we are potentially the most image-heavy social media site, and like Instagram we tag our content, which is metadata that the scraper can use.

So even if you aren't an artist, unless you want to Glaze every image of any kind that you post, you probably want to opt out of being scraped. I'm gonna go ahead and say we've probably already been scraped anyway, so I don't think there's a ton of point in taking down your tumblr or locking down specific images, but I mean...especially if it's stuff like pictures of children or say, a fundraising photo that involves your medical data, it maybe can't hurt.

If you do want to officially opt out, which may help if there's a class-action lawsuit later, you're going to want to go to the gear in the upper-right corner on the Tumblr desktop site, select each of your blogs from the list on the right-hand side, and scroll down to "Visibility". Select "Prevent third party sharing for [username]" to flip that bad boy on.

Per notes: for the app, go to your blog (the part of the app that shows what you post) and hit the gear in the upper right, then select "visibility" and it will be the last option. If you have not updated your app, it will not appear (confirmed by me, who cannot see it on my elderly version of the app).

You don't need to do it on both desktop and mobile -- either one will opt you out -- but on the app you may need to load each of your sideblogs in turn and then go back into the gear and opt out for that blog, like how you have to go into the settings for each sideblog on desktop and do it.
