Five things that make me happy :)

My partner and children, first and foremost, who just delight me by existing.

The boat. This is The Drake's Return, which is where my son lives. Sometimes we go and help him move it, because it's hard work going through the locks on the canals.

It was a bit of a fixer-upper! Last year we sanded it down to bare metal and painted it ourselves. This year we had to take it to a vintage diesel engineer to fix the engine idle and teach us how to change the oil. Which brings me on to

3. Sign Painting/Rose and Castles painting

Just finished painting and lettering a gangplank for the boat. (It's a scaffolding plank with a paint job.) And you can see some of my Roses and Castles work on the boat's back doors. 'Roses and Castles' is a traditional British folk art based around the canal boats. I'm teaching a class on how to do it to a bunch of local folks next week.

4. Jewellery Making

I wanted to buy a necklace inspired by the stone age beads I saw while watching The Prehistory Guys on Youtube, but I could not find any. So I got myself a course in bead stringing instead and made my own.

(This one inspired by the Varna culture in Bulgaria c. 4500 BC, which was heavy on red beads and gold.)

5. Dancing!

I used to absolutely adore morris dancing, but last year the combination of fibromyalgia and arthritis in the knees meant that I acknowledged that I had to give it up. I'm still involved in that world as a musician-which is still pretty cool- but it did rather depress me until I took up Belly Dancing instead. Now I'm belly dancing twice a week and due to perform at my first hafla at the end of May.

WIP Wednesday

I got tagged by @johaerys-writes & @baejax-the-great … tysm guys! <3 I’m currently putting the finishing touches on the next chapter of Liminal Spaces, and we’ve made it to the part of the story where I have given the blorbos my own incredibly cringe-but-free niche internet interests. I’m considering even making direct links in the fic text to make the whole thing a bit more interactive, hmm… thoughts? “Lifetime by Surfing,” Achilles says suddenly to Patroclus when the song in question appears in the playlist rotation. “Tell me which song it is sampling and by whom, or pay the penalty.”

Patroclus closes his eyes to listen, brow furrowed with concentration.

“That has to be Eugene Wilde,” he says after a while. “The song is called ‘Personality’.”

Achilles clicks his tongue, perhaps lamenting the missed opportunity to playfully torment Patroclus for a bit. “I thought for sure that would get you… it was a modest hit only in the UK in nineteen eighty-four.”

“Who is Eugene Wilde?” Zagreus asks. “I’ve never heard of him.”

“He had a couple of number one hits in the eighties,” Patroclus says.

“On the R&B charts,” Achilles clarifies. “He never charted above seventy-sixth place on the US pop charts.”

“Oh, interesting,” says Zagreus, who can only nod along. He listens as another song begins to play: Boot, by Macintosh Plus. “I have to admit, I don’t really understand the appeal of this music. They just slow down old random pop songs to make them sound distorted and creepy, and anyone can do that. It takes no effort or imagination whatsoever.”

“What do you mean!?” Achilles exclaims, once again so loudly that it makes Zagreus jolt with the shock of it. “So by that logic, do you think a literal toilet bowl with a couple of words scribbled on the side couldn’t become one of the most influential and thought-provoking works of art of the twentieth century just because ‘anyone could do it’?” Achilles taps pointedly at his temple. “It’s the ideas behind the art that make them brilliant. If everyone could do it then someone else would have done it first, and then it wouldn’t have meant anything!”

Even frivolous arguments like these between Zagreus and his father had always felt like life-or-death—fraught with tension, fear, and anger, a thing that he had to survive. But despite his passion, there is no anger in Achilles’ tone or expression—his wide, toothy grin flashes with amusement—this argument is a game to him, and even if he wants to win, the stakes are low. It helps Zagreus to relax, to meet such friendly sparring in kind.

“All right then, tell me,” he scoffs back. “What sort of ideas are they trying to get across?”

How many wips do you have currently?

One active wip and 2 dormant wips (aka abandoned since 2021 but I fully intend on finishing them one day)

Which one are you finding the hardest to finish?

It's one of the above mentioned 2021 fics! I've been wanting to write a postcanon JGY resurrection AU for a very long time; so far I have one chapter, but the overarching politics and the multi-chapter arc were a bit ambitious and it's hard to get in the swing of things until I figure out EXACTLY what happened to every single watchtower, you know?

What does it usually look like when inspiration strikes for you?

I just start writing, usually in my phone notes, usually at 3am. It'll be a few disjointed paragraphs that will later become the climax of the fic. If I have those, then it is worth writing the rest.

Do you curate playlists for each fic or is your process different?

Not on purpose. Usually I have just 1 song I listen to on repeat for every fic (likely looking for a fic title); if it is a multichapter, these songs will add up into a playlist, but I feel shy sharing those and, besides, I only have one or two.

Do you go balls to the wall and write as you go or are you more organized?

It really depends. If it is (meant to be) a oneshot, I just start in medias res and then fill in the blanks. If it is multichapter, no matter where I start writing, I need to have at least a vague outline to know where I am going to land. (And when it is particularly ambitious, like Last of Our Kind, I made notecards to rearrange events and it was so much fun!)

XUE YANG AND FAIRY TYPES ? 👀👀👀👀

Hell yeah! I love Fairy types, and I love Xue Yang, and I feel like they're two great tastes that go great together, especially given how mean some Fairy Pokemon can be.

So here's our knife boy, and his primary out-and-about Pokemon is a poorly-socialized Sylveon that loves him and hates everyone else. It's great for getting people to lower their guard, because a Sylveon is very pretty and non-threatening and it's a friendship evolution so ohhh, look at this sweet boy, he must love his Pokemon so much! And he does, he really does, but he especially loves it when she bites people. (Moveset: Bite, Draining Kiss, Play Rough, Charm)

He's also got a Mawile, which he caught because look, sometimes a guy's gotta hide in a cave. It's picked up a taste for human food since it's started traveling with him, and it's pretty enthusiastic about both helping him hunt when he needs to and about stealing food when it seems amusing or useful to do so. (Moveset: Sweet Scent, Iron Head, Play Rough, Crunch)

Last, but very much not least, there's Jiangzai, his Morgrem. She's his best friend. He's given her an actual knife. (Moveset: False Surrender, Dark Pulse, Play Rough, Torment)

All three of them share his taste for sweets. ^⁠_⁠^

hhhhhello hey hi !!!! I'm the podficcer that asked permission to podfic your ghost series and -- I had a strange question for the sangcheng one!!???? I keep thinking about nhs alive in 1920s NY speaking in some 1920s slang and I can't help but uhhhh picture him talking in a 1920s NY accent but is he FROM ny?!!!! 😂 a NY accent keeps popping up every time I read his lines out loud, and I'm not sure if that's weird, so I wanted to ask for some feedback!!!!

for jiangzaix3 I am finished recording the first two chapters and 2/3rds finished with the last chapter. I just have to edit in music! the accompanying Playlist is amazing! I also wanted to ask if you had any other additional songs or Playlist for the other three fics or if I should just pull from the one? I have an idea for which songs go with which stories -- jiangzai x3 has at least 3 songs lol bc there are too many good ones!

Hello, my dear! 💜💜💜 I'm so excited to hear your podfics--prior to getting into MDZS, the only person I'd ever heard read my own work was me, so between you and the person recording "this humble fox" I'm practically basking in the exciting novelty of it.

Anyway, that's not a strange question at all, it's a very good one! No, despite his tendency to hang out in fashionable areas of New York City when he was alive, Huaisang is not from New York, he's actually from New Hampshire. The Nies emigrated to the USA significantly before any of the other cultivation clans and initially settled down in the White Mountains, where they made quite a lot of money as trappers. They eventually opened up the butcher shop rather further south in the actual populated areas, and Huaisang attended a private school, so I think the most appropriate accent for him would be what's called a Mid-Atlantic. If you're unfamiliar, look up clips from Bringing Up Baby on YouTube--Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn are the shining examples of the early 20th century Mid-Atlantic accent, which was a very mannered, deliberate way of speaking. (The house Mingjue had built for him, the one into which Jiang Cheng eventually moves, is in Georgia, because Huaisang hates to be cold and loves to garden and placing him in Georgia meant the Jiangs could maybe keep an eye on him.)

The Yus, meanwhile, settled right outside Boston, in Newton, and Yu Ziyuan did her level best to instill her children with the value of speaking "properly," so Jiang Cheng speaks with...about half of a modern upper-class Boston accent, which shades into a more classic Southern when he relaxes, since he did grow up in Georgia. (The Southern accent gets noticeably more prominent when he's talking to/arguing with Wei Wuxian, who was born in Kentucky and spent the first seven or so years of his life learning to speak from Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze--Cangse had a thick accent, it was one of the things Yu Ziyuan disliked about her and her son after her.

As for music, the other three fics don't have specific playlists--"Jiangzai x3" was fully written in a sort of mad hallucinatory dash, and the playlist sprang up as part of that--but I do have general WangXian and XiYao playlists, if you'd like to look through those for inspiration, and of course all of the chapter titles for "Gimme Shelter" are themselves song titles. Unfortunately, I have sorely neglected Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang as far as playlists go, and I do need to remedy that. In the meantime, if it helps at all, Huaisang listened to a lot of jazz when he was alive--think Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, any luminary of the Harlem Renaissance who was recording before 1927--and loved to go out dancing. I'm honestly not sure what sort of music Jiang Cheng listens to, or if he habitually listens to much at all.
