What's Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi) is about?

It is easy: Jin Ling's uncle dies to bring back Jin Ling's uncle, who was killed by Jin Ling's uncle, except not really. Then Jin Ling's uncle, and Jin Ling's future uncle teams up to solve the mystery of a mutilated corpse, who was actually Jin Ling's uncle, and was killed by Jin Ling's uncle. This leads to the scene where Jin Ling's uncle, Jin Ling's future uncle, Jin Ling's uncle, and Jin Ling's uncle confronts Jin Ling's uncle. Then Jin Ling uncle gets stabbed by Jin Ling's uncle, and gets killed by the ghost of Jin Ling's uncle. In the end it turns out that everything was planned by Jin Ling's uncle.

I love lan Xichen he’s actually such an interesting character — and more so because personally I don’t see him as quite so “good” as characters do in text

like hes really nice and generally considered righteous but he isn’t lan wangji’s or wei wuxian’s style of righteous, he’s the cultivation world’s style of righteous — and he’s more selfish than people think! In the sense that he was willing to overlook all of Jin guangshao’s misdeeds (or explain them away, rather) both because he cared about him and didn’t want to lose him and because of that aforementioned niceness — he’s the person who’s always trying to see two sides of the story, and that backfired on him when his own wants clash with the reality because he ends up denying truth as long as possible

and arguably it’s pretty clear you’re not meant to think he’s evil. He’s just caught between a rock and a hard place in terms of reality and him trying to hold onto his family and his own wants

and 1) I sympathize greatly with that clash and I think conflating niceness with morality (I’m saying that other characters view him that way, not that he does, at least not at the end of the books) really underlines MXTX’s point regarding Wei wuxian

2) I think it’s very interesting that we witness how the twin jades of lan were raised — or at least get hints to it. Because all those rules, especially ones about respecting your elders, etc, have ingrained an acceptance of the status quo into lan xichen and lan wangji. And while knowing that is useful to the main story because we see how lan wangji has resisted that (getting whipped for defending wei wuxian, night hunting to help people and not for his own glory) but it’s also interesting because we see how lan xichen hasn’t resisted it. I’m not saying he’s actively opposed, I’m just saying it took a life changing incident for him to realize what lan wangji figured out so long ago (because of his own life changing incident — Wei wuxian) ; that sometimes the rules and the status quo are wrong / not a guide for morality. And that’s why he says what he does to Wei wuxian — “you were the only mistake he made” because he almost (and will soon) understands what it takes Jin guangshao’s guilt to teach him. There’s more to morality than being nice

and I think after seeing his mistakes in ultra HD and then also being able to consider them in hindsight? He is NOT having a fun time in seclusion

he’s just such an interesting character to me because I think both he and the reader believes he’s morally pure for so long, until you finish the books, when you can see he’s a lot more morally grey than you think — and that progression is fascinating and not something you see done that way!

lan xichen is the kid who upon finding a baby bird on the ground goes to put it back in its nest so its mother can find look after it and lan wangji is the kid who picks it up and brings it home because if the baby bird is out of the nest it means its mother is gone

Daily reminder that when the Cloud Recesses got attacked, and LXC went on the run and JGY saved him and helped him hide, the Wens were in full power. They were the undisputed ruling clan. So much so that they could demand the other sects to send their heirs to them as hostages, and nearly kill the said heirs, fearing no consequences. And no sect had decided to try anything against them yet. They didn't think that ALL THE OTHER SECTS TOGETHER could do anything against the Wens. (And they truly couldn't if it weren't for Meng Yao.)

A little insignificant outcast like Meng Yao was FUCKED if he was caught hiding away THE Zewu-Jun.

And yet he did it! He didn't like...drag LXC to a doctor and said "I found this mysterious wounded man with an unknown identity. He's your problem now. Ciao. :)" No! He fully took care of him and hid him away and helped him rebuild the Cloud Recesses! (And listen, the Xiyao agenda of the show when Meng Yao specifically thinks of "Zewu-Jun" when he hears about the fall of the cloud recesses while he himself is bleeding on the ground and goes to save LXC after his banishment is very beautiful, especially for LXC. Imagine seeing this cute guy that you developed a crush on with one look and a total of 5 minutes of interaction before the guy left. And then suddenly in your worst & most desperate situation, the guy suddenly appears like an angel like you've manifested him and saves you and nurses you back to health and takes your hand in rebuilding your sect every step of the way. BUT! Book!Meng Yao didn't even know LXC! There has never been a tender hand touch and LXC gracefully saving him from an awkward and cruel social situation! He just saw a man and saved him out of the kindness of his heart regardless of the risks for himself!)

And LXC wasn't even the only person he saved individually. He saved Qin Su, too. if he's saved these two individually who knows if he had saved more people. Daily reminder that JGY is the kind of person who will go out of his way to help people when he can.
