Thoughts on Season 7 Storytelling Technique

In lieu of trying to wipe the season 6 finale from my mind, I have been thinking a lot about the new season 7 storytelling technique that Stephen has been alluding to recently. I know everyone is speculating that it is a flashforward of sorts, but this almost seems too obvious to me. So I stared thinking ,”what do I really want to see from this point on in Arrow?”- and I came up with this,” I want to see what is truly going on in the hearts and minds of the characters” Specifically, Oliver/Felicity/and Dig. I don’t know if this is a storytelling technique, but what if, instead of flash forwards , we got dream sequences or wish sequences from the hearts and minds of Oliver and Felicity specifically. They are walking 2 parallel but separate and connected storylines next season for what may be close to 1/3 to 1/2 of it. I think it would be sooo interesting to see the wishes of their hearts and the musings of their thoughts/ souls as they go through the trials and tribulations of being separated physically but still united in every other way. ( maybe this explains the baby reference that DR made at HVFF - not an actual occurrence in present time/ not an actual flash forward to the future/ but a wish or desire by either Oliver or Felicity of where they had hoped their love and lives together would lead them) it doesn’t mean that the baby won’t happen in the future , but it doesn’t commit the Arrow writers to providing it either next season.

Final thoughts- I am so tired of Arrow sacrificing character growth and focus for plot action- the action sequences have become boring and monotonous to me. I can only watch Oliver beat the crap out of the “bad guys” so much without wishing and wanting something so much more deeper from the show that I have come to know and love over the past 6 seasons. I WANT TO SEE OLIVER AND FELICITY( and Dig) from the inside out. I want their hearts, minds and souls laid bared to me. We have not gotten that in so long. I have great hope that Beth Schwartz and the new writers will bring this back to Arrow!!

Emily discussed that in an interviewing (I’m paraphrasing) saying hope and happy endings are often unrealistic. It was much more exciting for her to play a flawed character who does bad things.

it wasn’t that her character got an unhappy ending it was that the flawed d-bag male character got the good ending. like he deserved nothing because he was doing horrible things too

All these reports are just one major reason I didn't get involved with script writing or journalism. Interest in those writing outlets was one thing. The other issue was not only being a woman in a creative field, but being a disabled woman. Basically, people think of the disabled community and women alike are easy targets. Guess what? We're not. I'll go back to writing about badass female superheroes which are disabled and POC while I wait for AK and MG to get fired.

I hear ya, @dmichellewrites. Script writing has always been an interest of mine and I’ve dithered and dallied about whether I want to get involved in those industries for precisely these reasons. As @eilowyn1 put it in another post, in my mind I’ve always envisaged these places to be rosier than the reality appears to be, and the more I read about the insidious darkness within them, the more I realise how naive I was to think that the world was a better place than it is. 

I have hope though. There are some amazing shows at the moment filled with progressive, inclusive, diverse writers’ rooms, and I have to believe that the tide is changing. Women and minorities and people of the disabled community deserve a stronger voice, and it seems we’re all going to have to shout that little bit louder to be heard. Who knows, maybe years from now we’ll look at 2017 as the seminal moment before change finally occurred. In the meantime, yeah, keep on keeping on, write your stories, feed your creativity, build your portfolio. Houses of cards come tumbling down eventually.

Oliverdant | What’s next...

I have been a superfan of just Arrow for 8 years… Now, the series is over  and it’s time to move on [hard words] ...  I still love blogging and I’d like to keep using this platform to keep creating, sharing and discussing  interesting content, but from now on it will be about other topics and activities I’ve always enjoyed and I could not share before... Not that I would not discuss comics and TV (that I still love) or follow up with some of my Arrow favorites, but I want to amplify the scope of what I post and explore new things.

First, I want to thank every single one of my followers for the unconditional support you offered me during these years, I feel proud when I say that I’ve always had a great time blogging on Tumblr…. Here I learned a lot about fandoms, communities, influencers and also how to manage and navigate better the harsh environment that is our beloved Internet.

To tell you the truth, there were times (Arrow Season 4, for example) when I just wanted to quit and speak about other topics, but well I decided to stick to the promise of the blog and continued posting just because...  I love Oliver Queen

Unfortunately, the show is over so I want to share are some details of the Plan B for my blog:

That is until paparazzi show up the next morning. Will Oliver revert back to his old ways when he used to punch them out? What does Felicity do in response? How do they combat enemies, who want to tarnish their names in the public eye?

Arrow 7x20–We interrupt this broadcast of Arrow to bring you BuzzFeed Unsolved.

All in all, I enjoyed this episode. I’m a big fan of true crime. But I also really didn’t appreciate some parts of it.

I think the first thing that needs to be addressed is Oliver and Felicity.

- The events of this episode would have been extremely triggering for both of their PTSD.

- For Oliver, being in an interrogation room again, on the losing side of the law again. Being stared down and threatened.

- For Felicity, having her husband in legal trouble again. Being told that she’s “abused her food privileges enough for today” after worrying about meals as a kid, while definitely being legitimately hungry; she’s pregnant.

- For both of them, having a building collapse. Not hearing from Oliver after it happened. Both of them remembering Tommy and the Undertaking.

- I mean, come on.

Anyway

- Oliver kicked a TON of ass in this episode. It was lovely. Friendly reminder, this is his show.

- Next week’s promo doesn’t look good.

- Oliver on Emiko “at some point, people need to accept responsibility for their actions.”

- I don’t know how they expect us to believe that Oliver lives after that. He’s literally the meat in a concrete sandwich.

- I loved having him back.

- I knew something was up, though.
