Why they are one of my Reylo Faves

In build a ladder to the stars, @redbelles prose are well crafted, but it’s the way they build a story through snippets of moments strung together on a linear, but undefined timeline that provides for a lyrical quality to their work.  Similar in methodology to angharabbit’s Accusations: 26 Reylo Ficlets, but more poetic in execution.  To be clear, these are not compiled vignettes, but a story of moments (similar in style (not delivery) to Evan S. Connell’s Mrs. Bridge).  Subtle in plot, heavy in Kylo’s internal reflection and Rey’s internal turmoil.  Too much of an arc to be mere character studies, but the characterizations are nearly perfect, I might consider this more of a “relationship/connection study” - as clearly it’s been well thought out by the author, not only who these characters are and what they look like fleshed out, but also how they would interact and connect - and what that looks like fleshed out.  Through all the myriad of allegorical introspection these two jump through, the poetic fact that Kylo Ren’s heart is a desert and Rey is well adapted to navigating (and surviving) a desert is beautiful in it’s simplicity.  

stuck in the cold is one of those fics that will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers, but I think is being missed because of the summary.  So here’s the gist: it’s a modern AU of financially struggling, tough barista Rey pining for awkward, but proper professor Kylo (who is also pining for Rey) being gifted a chance by fate when a snowstorm makes for a “stuck together” situation.  This fic masquerades as a PWP, but is packed with tender longing fueling a chemistry that delivers a ... climax.  Under 10k words, it’s an enjoyable half hour fic before bedtime to leave you with a smile and sweet dreams.  

The Bottom Line 

redbelles has fleshed out versions of Rey and Kylo, and in turn fleshed out a version of “Reylo”, in a curated style that provides for a unique crafting of the Reylo dynamic and well-written, satisfying fics to the fandom.

For @housedadam 's Fairytale Collection, I wrote a Beauty and the Beast themed Centaurlo fic.

Title: Beauty and Her Centaur

Rated: E

TW: smut, pregnancy, lactation kink

Summary: Ancient centaur Kylo Ren is cursed to remain in his centaur form until his mate bears him an heir. Banished to a lonely isle, he's forced to wait for a mate to wash ashore, and after a few centuries, someone unique does.

OR: How Rey came to end up having sex with a centaur and building a sex swing.

She didn’t want to fight the tendril of hope that was unfurling in her, wanting to believe in what he was saying, but this last thing made her pause. “You want to bring the Knights of Ren to Jakku in concert?” she asked flatly.

“Jakku, or as close to it as I can get.” He nodded firmly.

“Ben, this is crazy… do you hear yourself? You can’t just… drag the band out across half the country because you like a girl!” She threw her hands up.

“Oh yeah? Says who?” His brows lowered, his voice dropping into a dramatic growl, showing her a glimpse of Kylo as he leaned in. “I can do whatever I want.”

Will he, won't he? Will she, won't she?!

Day 5 of Reylo Week 2020:  Wounds / Healing /Touch

A poem of the same name:

Wounds / Healing / Touch

 The wound is a gash to heart and soul and meat of him.

To her, the wound is a gouge down to bone, a swift, nasty laceration.

 Ben is nothing.  He already knows this.  He is not surprised.  No.

Rey is nothing.  She finds out and it becomes her monster.

 Rey touches the hole in Ben’s sweater.

Stitching, knitting, weaving, mending, wishing she had not…

 Touch binds wounds.

 It was not an intentional wound she gave him.

Was it?

He was tired, so was she.

Of incessant fighting, of being so frightened of self, of dark thoughts, evil plans

 Wondering who to touch and would it all go away if he just

Kills it.

Wondering if she could scream out

you do not know me

you do not know this pain.

 Does he?

Touch him, Rey, you will see.

 Touch her, Ben, you will find

You are healed.

 They touch.

Hands, bodies, lips together.

Wounds healing touch.

Touch healing wounds.

My Prince Ben finally gets some much needed love and update. Rey and the prince make more headway in their relationship, and more importantly Rey admits some things to herself on her feelings. The palace experiences a scare and Ben faces some realizations about the country he is preparing to run.

Summary: 

It is said that when the universe first came into being, certain particles of matter were drawn to each other, destined to spend the rest of eternity together. However, over time, these particles were separated in the creation of different souls. Yet the particles called to each other, longing to be reunited once more. Thus came soul mates—people who were absolutely perfect for each other, destined to spend their lives searching for the peace that meeting the other half of their soul would bring. It is said that every year starting with the youngest’s eighteenth birthday the soulmates will swap bodies. This will occur until the soulmates kiss, and the bond is fulfilled. Ben Solo has gone six years believing his soulmate does not exist. Rey is on the brink of turning eighteen. The only problem? Ben is in a relationship and Rey isn’t so sure she wants a soulmate at all.   As the years go by and the two continue to swap bodies, neither of them wants to admit how badly they want to meet the other. At least, that is, until three years after her eighteenth birthday, when Rey walks into Professor Ren's Advanced Literature class and gets the shock of her life.

If you’ve been following us on twitter, you’ll know that this month we’ve started themed fic recs. The first week was fluff week, where we hilighted a different fluffy fic each day.

For the sake of brevity, and to reduce spamming your TL today, we will be compiling the fics of the week into one post.

Sunday: First on the list is: “The ‘Infomercial’ series” (rated T) @eleanor-we ites-stuff I loved “Call Now For A Free Trial!” (friends-with-benefits figuring out how to evolve their relationship)

Why do we recommend it? from the first time I read it because it’s sweetness and fluff and family poking around as Ben and Rey find their way. I was beyond excited when Eleanor revisited this ‘verse with two(!!) more follow-ups! TW: for pregnancy in the third story in the series

Monday: a rec from multiple house members, is: “Purl Two Together” (rated M) by @lachesisgrimm It has the tag ‘knitting terms used as sexual euphemisms’ which is a solid recommendation on its own, but here’s a bit more: it's soft and tender and just as warm and comforting as the things knit from the yarn sold at Ben’s yarn shop; reading it is such a calming experience - you'll fall in love with this Ben and Rey. Pregnancy TW in the epilogue, and it's mentioned in general a few times.

Not convinced yet? May we present an excerpt from chapter one to demonstrate how much you need soft, delicate sock knitting Ben Solo in your life:

“Out of curiosity,” she said after a moment, cautious, “Are we having dinner because you’re desperate for new students, or-” She faltered, and finally- regrettably- said the first thing that came to mind. “Or are you interested in my purl… stitch.”

His mouth twitched as she blushed furiously. “Purling,” he said clearly, humor evident in his voice. “Purling two together, even.”

“And you’re not currently purling with anyone else?” she asked, needing to know the answer.

Like we said - soft. So check it out, crafting knowledge not needed to enjoy this beautiful story, so don't let that put you off.

Tuesday: “No Snow" by @leofgyth (rated M) with original song lyrics by @lovethemfiercely

Are you ready? We're gonna be spending some time deep within the Plaidam season with Christmas Fluff!

Why do we think you should be reading it? It's a gender-swapped White Christmas au with Reylo and Finnrose and Monty Python inspired comedy (along with plenty of nods to our favorite parts of the classic musical, of course) and reading it made me grin from ear to ear.

Wednesday: "Scenes From A Sweeter Place" series (rated G) by @pulltothelight It's got the tags you're looking for, like: Established Relationship, Domestic Fluff, Sledding, and Cute!

Why do we love it? A pair of fluffy glimpses into an established relationship Reylo. (literal fluff, courtesy of an exploded Twinkie in the case of the summer story 😁) A perfect little pick me up when you just want happy Reylo.

Thursday: “Lost & Found" by @commandercrouton (rated T). TW for pregnancy in the final chapter.

Why do we love it? Its got fluff (a given for the week), its got snark, its got Ben as an author, but most importantly Kylo is a cat, a matchmaker bringing his parents together in this tooth rottenly sweet story.

Friday: “Dog Days of Summer” by @nancylovesreylo (rated T) based on an incredible piece of fan art by @hotside involving a man, a dog and his cereal in the comfort of his own home.

Why should you read it? Rey is a vet student who runs a business walking dogs, but there’s a mix up with her new client and sees quite a bit of skin instead of fur😏There’s an instant connection, Ben wears glasses, and it’s impossible to make it through this fic without grinning.

Saturday: “Pinball Wizard” by @shortystylee (rated T) a delightful romp between two people brought together over pinball.

Why should you read it? Come on. Pinball meet-cute. What more do you need? But! Rey is a med student (ob/gyn) Ben is in linguistics and both find solace in Maz’s arcade. They meet after Rey begins beating Ben’s scores. It short and as sweet as the gelato Rey eats.
