imagine finding your soulmate when you were a teenager and building a life together with so much love and support and care and believing that even if you didn’t meet in school you still would have found each other and loved and been loved in return. god.

I know we got faked out by no Buck and Christopher in this episode but actually the choices they made are making me insane. Because it wasn’t just that Christopher wasn’t in the scene in his room, it was that he didn’t appear in the episode at all. The whole time he was referenced but just out of sight, just off screen. Packing things in the bathroom when Eddie and Buck were alone in his room (which…don’t get me started). Sleeping in the car when they arrived at the Diaz House. Nowhere to be seen at the retirement party.
But that was the whole point. Because we’ve spent a year on “make sure you’re following your heart, not Christopher’s” from the EA breakup through Eddie backsliding and quitting his job to him going to therapy for himself to get back to where he wants to be to finding joy with his found family once again pulling on a uniform in 5x16 and now…now to this quiet conversation at a kitchen table with Eddie saying to his father that he’s going to be better, not for Christopher, but for himself. A conversation in which Eddie admits that the anger he’s felt towards his father over the years has also been directed inward—that he’s been punishing himself for reasons that remain unspoken.
Christopher did not appear! In an episode bringing us to a major turning point in Eddie’s journey of healing and self discovery. Christopher did not appear! In an episode where Eddie actively claims his life for himself right before he’s going to make “decisions about the future” in “Starting Over”. Christopher did not appear! But Eddie and Buck were in his bedroom. And next week they’re going to be in Eddie’s bedroom—that space where we haven’t seen anyone else in Eddie’s life but Shannon—they’re going to be in Eddie’s bedroom patching the walls, cleaning up the mess together.
Eddie is following his heart, not Christopher’s. And this is where we’re really getting into what that means.
