#Ötztal Valley

Tumblr media
On September 19, 1991, while hiking in the Ötztal Valley, German hikers Erika and Helmut Simon stumbled upon what they initially thought was the body of a recently deceased mountain climber. However, it turned out that this was a remarkably preserved mummy, later named Ötzi, which had been encased in ice for over 5,300 years. The mummy was surrounded by various artifacts, including a bow and a quiver containing arrows, a copper-bladed axe, a flint dagger with a wicker sheath, birch wood vessels lined with maple leaves, remnants of a backpack, a leather pouch holding small items, and clothing and shoes made from fur and leather, among other minor items. Researchers analyzing Ötzi concluded that he likely met a violent end due to an arrowhead found lodged in his left shoulder and other injuries on his body, suggesting he was the victim of murder.

One little thing I think is funny in Pentiment is that Ötz Zimmerman mentions his nickname being derived from the Ötztal valley -- which of course is near enough to where the game takes place, and sounds enough like his given name, Otto, to make sense.
However it also means his nickname has the same exact etymology as Ötzi the Iceman's, which given the game's interest in the many layers of history in any given area, feels intentional.

AUSTRIA: Huge volumes of water plunge down scenic waterfall in Austria
Flood warnings and a red rain warning were in place in parts of Austria on Monday, August 28, with 100-year-highs reached at rivers in at least two places, according to Austrian broadcaster ORF. Flood warnings affected the River Inn and its tributaries, the Sill and the Ziller, and prompted 60 people to be evacuated in Tumpen, in the Ötztal area, as a precautionary measure. In the Gastein Valley,…

The notable avian species that are found here include the Golden eagle, peregrine falcon, black grouse, black woodpecker, etc. The European lynx ( Lynx lynx) and the marmot ( Marmota marmota) have been successfully reintroduced in the Swiss Alps. Some of the important mammal species that are found in the Alpine region are the ibex ( Capra ibex), Alpine hare ( Lepus timidus), red deer ( Cervus elaphus), etc. Many plants like crocus, primulas, rhododendron, and edelweiss also thrive well in the Alpine habitats. Mixed mountain forests including oak, beech, pine, poplar, chestnut, and birch trees thrive well in the lower mountain slopes, whereas coniferous forests are found in the higher altitudes. Several vegetation zones are found in the Alpine mountains. Bernard Pass, Gotthard, Semmering Pass, etc. Some of the major passes in the Alpine mountains are the Brenner Pass, the Col de I’lseran, Col Agnel, Mont-Cenis, Great St. This collision generated huge pressure resulting in the upliftment of the sedimentary rocks thereby creating the characteristic Alps mountain folds. The Alps Mountain range was formed millions of years ago during collisions between the Eurasian and the African tectonic plates. Several lakes are also found here including Lake Annecy, Lake Constance, Lake Garda, Lake Geneva, etc. Some of the notable rivers that flow in the Alpine Mountain region include the Inn, Po, Rhine, and Rhône rivers. Some of the other notable mountain peaks include the Matterhorn, Dufourspitze, Finsteraarhorn, Weisshorn, Grossglockner, Zugspitze, and Triglav. Located on the boundary between Switzerland and Italy is Monte Rosa, which rises to an elevation of 4,634 m and is the second-highest peak in the Alps. Mont Blanc sits on the border of France and Italy and rises to an elevation of 4,808 m, making it the highest peak in the Alps Mountain Range. It comprises of the Cottian, Ligurian and the Graian Alps, as well as the Mont Blanc massif and Valle d’Aosta.

The Western Alps extends from the Maritime Alps near the Mediterranean coast to the Great St Bernard Pass, straddling the borders of France, Italy and Switzerland. The Central Alps occupy the area between the Great St Bernard and Brenner passes and comprises the Bernese and Glarus Alps on the northern side and the Lepontine, Ötztal, Pennine, and the Rhaetian Alps in the southern part. Located mainly in Austria but also Germany, Italy and Slovenia, the Eastern Alps also comprise the Bavarian Alps, the Carnic Alps, the Dinaric Alps, the Dolomite Alps, and the Julian Alps. The Alps mountain range can be divided into three broad sections: the Eastern, Central, and Western Alps. The 22.6 km-long Aletsch Glacier located in the Valais canton of Switzerland is the largest glacier in the Alps. The Alps is a discontinuous mountain range and comprises numerous peaks and valleys that are of varying heights and depths. The Alps cover a total area of about 207,000 km 2 and have a maximum width of about 250 km at its widest point that is situated between Verona in Italy and the Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Germany. The Alps mountain range ends in Albania on the rugged Adriatic Sea coastline. The mountain range then continues downwards through the countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro. The Alps mountain range stretches from the north of the Mediterranean Sea near Monaco in southern France into Switzerland, then through northern Italy into southern Germany, and towards Vienna in Austria.

AUSTRIA 2018
29.06.2018-06.07.2018
In the summer of 2018, it was time for a roadtriiip. Three of my friends and I hopped into a car and drove aaaall the way down to Austria for a few summery days. It is a long ass drive (~8h) and we started early so we wouldn’t be arriving to late. When we arrived in Austria, we were greeted by the best views on to the Blindsee right by the road we were driving on, so we just had to stop!
Tumblr media
For the first two nights, we stayed in an AirBnB in Piburg, it was really cute and honestly not too expensive.
Tumblr media
Later that day (after we packed everything into our little AirBnB) we went into the town of Oetz for dinner at Café Heiner. We had some drinks and some amazing traditionally Austrian food like my Käse Spätzle.
Tumblr media
Our main objective of going to Austria was AREA47 by Ötztal Bahnhof. It’s a water-amusement park and I honestly don’t remember why, but we really wanted to go. They have loads of slides and fun activities you can do, but since it is a little expensive, we decided to go to the main waterpark area on our first full day (we got some afternoon/evening ticket, I think) and then we had booked white water rafting for our second day. And let me tell you - it was a lot of fun! We had our GoPro and we took some hilarious videos of ourselves sliding down those slides and white water rafting in that freezing mountain water.
Tumblr media
Even though it was an expensive experience, I would recommend visiting AREA47 if you’re someone that enjoys some watery fun and some sliding action. Oh and btw, we were SO lucky with the weather, we had about 30+ degrees celsius, which - honestly - I didn’t even really think Austria could get that hot, lol.
After our waterpark adventures, we drove to a different part of Austria to go to an observation deck that I had found on some travel instagram page and really wanted to go to. It’s called Treppe Ins Nichts and it’s in Ramsau am Dachstein. It’s on top of a mountain and you can get there with a short (& kinda pricey) gondola ride. Be aware that up there, it can be windy and quite a bit colder than down in the valley, so don’t go up there in shorts (like we did). It was windy as hell up there, there even was some snow! And the views were incredible. I would 10/10 recommend checking it out - I think the price tag is worth it! (~40€)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean: LOOK at those views. damn. Back down from the mountain, we had some traditionally Austrian food again (Kaiserschmarrn hmmm) and then drove to The Alpine Club by Diamond Resorts Hotel in Schladming, where we stayed for one more night before driving aaaall the way back home (which was quite the journey). The hotel was alright and we even spent the way overpriced fee for using the hotel pool that night.
All in all, I had a great time and would highly recommend anyone to go explore your neighboring countries because look what you might find.
Until next time,  alvipalvi

In September 2008 I headed to Obergurgl in the Austrian Tyrol, to walk, and to write letters to my Grandma who, years before, when I was a young kid, would come here every August with my Grandad to hike in the Ötztal Alps. They would return home with new stocknagel pinned to their ice axes and photos of the friends they’d made in the alpine huts and Gasthofs. Years later I found some of these images: “Our German friends who sang to us” being one that confirmed to me the importance of these annual trips in the period after WWII; these weren’t Romantic wanderings seeking isolation, but acts of reconciliation – walking and talking, drinking and singing with the very people who my Grandad had been fighting only 20 years earlier. These photos became the key to my own ‘walking work’, walking in groups, talking, spending the time it takes to get to feel comfortable with the hills and mountains, and the people walking alongside you. By 2008, my Grandma’s eyesight was failing, and she was largely confined to the front room of her house in Devon, England. I made my way to Obergurgl, via Innsbruck, and spend a few days walking the wandersweg around the village, writing my thoughts, recollections, feelings about being there in letters back to my Grandma. My mum read the letters aloud to her when they arrived. Pictured here are my notebook a letter in its envelope at a table in the Langtalereckhütte, a rubber stamp found there, and a view along the valley to the Italian border.
