Разлетелись по цветам краски радуги. (The colours of the rainbow scatter across the flowers.) Мы с тобою – по любви, мы – по ягоды. (You and I are in love, we're gathering berries.)

Земляника, земляника, (Strawberries, strawberries,) Нашу жажду утоли! (Quench our thirst!) Только слаще земляники (The only thing sweeter than them) Губы нежные твои. (Are your tender lips;) Видно, солнце обронило (It seems the sun has let fall) Поцелуйный луч в траву. (A ray of kisses on the grass.) Чтобы мама не бранила, (So that mama won't scold me,) Я чего-нибудь совру. (I shall tell a little lie.)

Strawberry season has begun! 🍓 This is early for us - I'm translating and drafting this post in the start of April, but it's rare to see native strawberries around here until early May or so. Here in the UK we had a medium summer and a very cold winter last year, and maybe the plants needed that, as everything seems to be growing more quickly. This is almost certainly due to climate change - a bittersweet thought - but the berries are looking magnificent, and taste just as well. Look at them!

Today's entry is short and sweet. Olga Zarubina (b. 1958) is a singer and actress from Moscow, and was actively mostly between 1977-1989. In the early days she trained as a nurse, but used to sing in a student ensemble, which led to her discovery by the composer Vyacheslav Dobrynin (1946-2024). She began her career in the ВИАs Лейся, песня (Leysa, Pesnya/'Flow, Songs!') and Музыка (Muzyka/'Music') before embarking as a soloist. If you look up her name, you'll find a lot of clips of her performing in the 80s, in variety shows and concerts and other such elaborate arrangements. Here are a few examples, including the song that titled today's album, 'Заговорные слова' ('incantational words', or more roughly 'magic spells').

I've not been able to find any similar clips of today's song, 'Земляника' ('Strawberries'), nor any videos of her singing it either back then or nowadays. That is, however, presumably a consequence of archiving and less about the song itself; comments left on videos featuring this song seem to indicate it was well-known in the 80s, even if not as much as Olga Zarubina's other classics.

It certainly made its way to me smoothly enough. I discovered it on radiooooo back when you didn't need to pay to access most of its features (😢). 'Земляника' was the first song I'd ever heard from her, and I was enchanted by her bright and youthful voice, which she has retained to this day at over sixty years of age. I won't be shy in admitting that's how I like my pop vocalists 😄

Olga Zarubina is still active as a singer. Looking at her wikipedia, it seems that her career slowed greatly at the end of the 80s, and then she emigrated to the USA after the fall of the Soviet Union. The album Заговорные слова was recorded during this period, but it's a collection of her pre-existing hits, not new material.

That didn't resume until after 2007, when she was invited to participate in the show Ты суперстар! (You're a Superstar!), after which she took her career back up in Russia once more. (See this link for one of her performances on the show, covering t.A.T.u's 'Not Gonna Get Us'.) Concert programs and competitions appear to be where you can find her most often nowadays. Only a few months ago she was on the Russian version of Alter Ego!

Personal translation project for 2025

Now this is something I've been working on since New Year! For the past few years I've largely been translating for work, or for academic reasons. I just haven't had the chance to work on more personal interests, but this year, I've made the decision to indulge a little.

This is a Russian-English project. From tomorrow, and every Tuesday for the rest of the year, I'll do a musical showcase: every week I'm going to translate a song, mostly from my favourite musical period (1980s USSR), and post it here for others to see. Posts may include biographical notes about the musicians or interesting facts about the composition, as I'd like to focus on lesser-known songs, and it may be difficult to find context for them in English elsewhere. If you're a native/C1-C2 level speaker and don't find the time period too old-fashioned (😂), I'd also love to hear your thoughts on my efforts!

I currently have four posts queued up from January. They'll be posted this month, February's translations will go up on March, and so on. Not sure if December's entries will go up twice per week, or if this project will have to finish on Jan 2026, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Translations are scheduled for 5:30pm GMT. I like synthpop and songs about technology. Let's listen to some music together. 🥰
