Cultural Practices: Avatar Relics

In the episode “The Storm” (Season 1, Episode 12), we learn that the Air Avatar is identified based on which four toys (relics) out of thousands that an Air Nomad child selects. This process is based on the real-life way that tulku (སྤྲུལ་སྐུ), reincarnated spiritual leaders, are identified in Tibetan Buddhism. The most well-known tulku is, of course, the Dalai Lama.

SIGNS OF REALIZATION AND BUDDHAHOOD ATTAINMENT (RELICS)

According Buddha Dharma in general and Great Perfection (tib. rdzogs chen l རྫོགས་ཆེན།) teaching in particular, after great practitioner is liberated and passes to nirvana, the holy relics are found in the cremation ashes. These are the proof of enlightenment attained in this very life or in the luminous bardo of dharmata (Tib. ཆོས་ཉིད་འོད་གསལ་གྱི་བར་དོ།, chö nyi ösal gyi bardo).  These holy items are the material support of blessing.

According Great Perfection tantras, there are few types of such relics: (1) Bone ones with mantras or icons of peaceful and wrathful deities (tib. Zhi Khro ཞི་ཁྲོ), they mean the liberation in moment of death; (2) "Relics Dung" (tib. gdung གདུང།) mean the enlightenment and liberation in the luminous bardo of dharmata (tib. ཆོས་ཉིད་འོད་གསལ་གྱི་བར་དོ།, chö nyi ösal gyi bardo); (3) "Relics Ringsel" (ring bsrel ། རིང་བསྲེལ།)  mean the rebirth in the pure lands of natural Nirmanakaya.

From Dzogchen Tantra "Blazing Relics" (tib. sku gdung bar ba སྐུ་གདུང་འབར་བ):

གང་དག་མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདས་ན། །དེ་ལ་སྐུ་དང་གདུང་དང་ནི། །དེ་བཞིན་འོད་དང་སྒྲ་ཉིད་དང༌། །ས་ནི་གཡོ་བར་འགྱུར་བའོ། །

   " Those who passed to nirvana would leave behind, in cremation ashes the icons of Bodies and Dung Relics (tib. gdung གདུང ), light and rainbows, earth would shake …"

Further, we read in the same tantra that Dung Relics can be of five colours, referring five buddha families. One of them:

ཤ་རཱི་རཾ་ཞེས་དཀར་ལ་དངས། །སྣུམ་ལ་འདྲིལ་ཏེ་ཁ་དོག་གསལ། །སྲན་མ་ཡི་ནི་རྡོག་འབྲུ་ཙམ། །འདི་ནི་རུས་པའི་དངས་མ་སྟེ། །སྨིན་པས་འདྲིལ་བར་འབྱུང་བ་ཡིན། །ཐབས་ལྡན་དེ་ཡི་མགོ་ལས་འབྱུང༌། །

"Shariram (Buddhist Relics) is pure white, shining, size of pea.  It is the essence, pure core of bones.  On maturing it becomes round and appear from skilful of yogi's head".

Same tantra points later:

རིང་བསྲེལ་ཉིད་ནི་ཕྲ་མོ་སྟེ། །ཏིལ་གྱི་འབྲུ་དང་རྡུལ་ཆ་ཙམ། །འདི་ནི་འབྱུང་བས་བཤིག་པར་ནུས། །འདི་ནི་སྤྲུལ་པའི་ཞིང་ཁམས་སུའོ། །

"Ringsel can be size of sesame seed or speck of dust.  It can be destroyed by elements. This is the sign the one has attained the pure land of Nirmanakaya".

So the Dung Relics are considered to be the most supreme sign as they mean the actual Buddhahood attainment with consequent liberation in Dharmata Bardo.  Ringsel specifies the vision stage attainment (tib. mthong lam མཐོང་ལམ། ), and the last rebirth in natural Nirmanakaya Pure Land.  In these lands the practitioner goes the path of stages and Bhumi (tib. sa lam ས་ལམ།) and attains the final Buddhahood.

Despite of long combustion of cremation pyre, the abode of wrathful deities mandala "Bone Palace" [1] (tib. dung khang གདུང་ཁང།) was not damaged by fire.  Exactly as said in extremely secret Dzogchen tantra cycle “Blazing relics”, many white sharirams were found there of Tathagata family (tib. སངས་རྒྱས་རིགས།), size of pea and bigger.   It specifies the attainment of perfect and manifest buddhahood (tib. mngon par rdzogs par sangs rgyas) in dharmata bardo. More than that, few dark blue bone structures (tib. sku rus) were found among relics, as the sign of Rinpoche’s main yidam realization (Vajrakila).

Lama Karma Phunjok Rinpoche's students had requested H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche Sangye Pema Shepa to compose the "Swift Rebirth Prayer" (tib. myur byon gsol 'debs མྱུར་བྱོན་གསོལ་འདེབས།) and the request was appreciated.  

The Prayer for Lama Karma Phunjok Rinpoche’s Swift Rebirth composed by H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche Sangye Pema Shepa is as follows:

"Holy Guru, exalted Orgyen Kalzang (the name given to Lama by His Holiness Dudjom Jikdral Yeshe Dorje)

Although your enlightened mind passed to non-abiding fundamental space of nirvana,

Please, come back as soon as possible, to protect the beings that are to be tamed and manifest the activity of full liberation in three lands".

During 49 days after Karma Phuntsog passed away, disciples and lamas in Karmarong and Russia performed ‘Three Roots’ practice and ganapuja daily. 

Information about relics and liberation signs found after the cremation ritual which was strictly sealed (tib. gsang rgya གསང་རྒྱ།) and not revealed until the completion of 49th day funeral rituals. 

The purpose of sealing information about the Rinpoche’s holy relics was to avoid any hindrances of Guru’s soonest rebirth in our world.

༄༅། །འཇམ་དཔལ་གཤིན་རྗེའི་རྒྱུན་ཁྱེར་བཞུགས།

A Daily Practice of Mañjuśrī Yamāntaka

 སྐྱབས་སེམས་སྔོན་དུ་འགྲོ་བས།

With refuge and bodhicitta as a preliminary, recite the following:

ཨྱཻ།  ཨེ་ཉིད་སྟོང་པ་ཆོས་འབྱུང་སྟེ།  །

ayai, é nyi tongpa chöjung té

Ayai! From the dharmadhātu, the empty space of É as such,

མ་སྐྱེས་འགགས་པ་མེད་པ་ལས།  །

makyé gakpa mepa lé

Which is unborn and does not cease,

རང་བཞིན་གནས་པ་དྲན་པར་བྱ།  །

rangshyin nepa drenpar ja

I bring to mind that which is naturally present:

ཨཻ་ཡི་ཕོ་བྲང་ཆེན་པོའི་ནང་།  །

ai yi podrang chenpö nang

Within the great palace of Ai,

རྒྱུ་དང་རྐྱེན་ལས་མ་བསྐྱེད་པར།  །

gyu dang kyen lé makyepar

Not created through causes and conditions,

ཀླུ་གཉན་ས་བདག་རུ་ཏྲ་དང་།  །

lunyen sadak rudra dang

Mañjuśrī arises out of awareness, like a fish leaping from water,

མ་ཧེ་ཉི་ཟླ་པདྨའི་སྟེང་།  །

mahé nyida pemé teng

In a form of overwhelming splendour,

རིག་པ་ཆུ་ལས་ཉ་འཕར་ཚུལ།  །

rigpa chu lé nya par tsul

And standing upon nāgas, nyen, earth lords, rudras,

འཇམ་དཔལ་ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཟིལ་གྱིས་གནོན།  །

jampal chakgya zil gyi nön

Buffaloes, sun, moon and lotus.

དབུ་གསུམ་ཕྱག་དྲུག་ཞབས་བཞི་བསྒྲད།  །

u sum chak druk shyab shyi dré

He has three faces, six arms and four striding feet,

གཡས་དཀར་གཡོན་དམར་དབུས་མཐིང་ཞལ།  །

yé kar yön mar ü ting shyal

The right face is white, the left face red, and the central face blue.

འཁོར་ལོ་རལ་གྲི་རྡོ་རྗེ་གཡས།  །

khorlo raldri dorjé yé

In his right hands he holds a wheel, sword and vajra;

བེ་ཅོན་གཏུན་ཤིང་སྡིག་མཛུབ་གཡོན།  །

bechön tün shing dik dzub yön

With his left hands he holds a club and wooden pestle and makes a threatening mudrā.

རིགས་ལྔའི་ཁྲོ་བོས་དབུ་ལ་བརྒྱན།  །

rik ngé trowö u la gyen

The wrathful ones of the five families adorn his crown

དཔལ་གྱི་ཆས་རྫོགས་དུར་ཁྲོད་བརྒྱན།  །

pal gyi ché dzok durtrö gyen

And he has all the glorious attributes and ornaments of the charnel ground.

ཡུམ་ནི་གཉིས་མེད་ཆོས་ཀྱི་དབྱིངས།  །

yum ni nyimé chö kyi ying

His consort, indivisible within the dharmadhātu,

མཐིང་ནག་ཙིཏྟ་བྷན་དམར་སྟོབས།  །

tingnak tsitta bhen mar tob

Is dark blue and proffers a heart and blood-filled skullcup.

སྤྲུལ་པ་རྒྱན་གྱི་ལྷ་བརྒྱད་དང་།  །

trulpa gyen gyi lha gyé dang

As emanations, the eight deities of adornment

ཡེ་ཤེས་ཁྲོ་བོ་བཅུ་རྣམས་རྫོགས།  །

yeshe trowo chu nam dzok

And the ten of wisdom wrath are all present.

སྤྲུལ་པའི་ཁྲོ་ཚོགས་དཔག་མེད་དང་།  །

trulpé tro tsok pakmé dang

The deities emanate countless wrathful hosts

རྡོ་རྗེའི་ཚྭ་ཚྭ་རབ་ཏུ་འཕྲོ།  །

dorjé tsatsa rabtu tro

And an effusion of vajra sparks.

སྣང་ལ་རང་བཞིན་མེད་པར་བསྒོམ།  །

nang la rangshyin mepar gom

Visualize them all as appearing yet unreal.

ཐུགས་ཀར་ཉི་སྟེང་ཧཱུྃ་གི་མཐར།  །

tukkar nyi teng hung gi tar

Upon a sun at Yamāntaka’s heart,

སྔགས་ཀྱི་ཕྲེང་བས་བསྐོར་བ་ལས།  །

ngak kyi trengwé korwa lé

The mantra garland revolves around a syllable Hūṃ,

འོད་ཟེར་སྤྲོ་བསྡུས་དོན་གཉིས་བྱས།  །

özer trodü dön nyi jé

Emitting and absorbing rays of light to fulfil the twofold aims.

སྣང་སྲིད་ཐམས་ཅད་དཔལ་ཆེན་པོའི།  །

nangsi tamché palchenpö

All appearance and existence arises as the wisdom intent

ལྷ་སྔགས་དབྱེར་མེད་དགོངས་པར་ཤར།  །

lha ngak yermé gongpar shar

In which deity and mantra of the Great Awesome One are indivisible.

ཨོཾ་ཨཱ་ཀྲོ་ཏེ་ཀ་ཡ་མཱནྟ་ཀ་ཧ་ན་མ་ཐ་བྷཉྫ་ཧཱུྃ་ཕཊ༔

om a trotéka yamantaka hana mata bhandza hung pé

oṃ āḥ krodhika yamāntaka hana matha bhañja hūṃ phaṭ

ཞེས་སྤྱི་བསྙེན་བཟླའོ།  །

Recite this general approach mantra.

ཐུན་མཐར།

At the end of the session, conclude with:

ལྷར་སྣང་འོད་གསལ་དབྱིངས་སུ་ཐིམ།  །

lhar nangö sal ying su tim

The deity’s appearance dissolves into the sphere of luminosity.

སླར་ཡང་ཟིལ་གནོན་སྐུ་རུ་ལྡང་།  །

lar yang zilnön ku ru dang

Then arises once again in the form of overwhelming splendour.

བཛྲ་ཀཱ་ཝཱ་ཙི་རཀྵ་ཧཾ༔

benza ka wa tsi raksha hang

Vajra kāvāci rakṣa haṃ

དགེ་བ་འདི་ཡིས་མྱུར་དུ་བདག  །

gewa di yi nyurdu dak

Through the positivity and merit of this, may I swiftly

འཇམ་དཔལ་ཁྲོ་བོ་འགྲུབ་གྱུར་ནས།  །

jampal trowo drub gyur né

Attain the realization of wrathful Mañjuśrī, and thereby

འགྲོ་བ་གཅིག་ཀྱང་མ་ལུས་པ། །

drowa chik kyang malüpa

Every single sentient being

དེ་ཡི་ས་ལ་འགོད་པར་ཤོག །

dé yi sa la göpar shok

Reach his state of perfection too.

སོགས་བསྔོ་སྨོན་བྱའོ།  །

Dedicate the merit and recite prayers of aspiration.

 ཞེས་པའང་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་པས་བྲིས་པའོ།  །།  །

Guru Yoga of Lord Marpa Lotsāwa

 ཨཿ རང་སྣང་དག་པ་འོག་མིན་ཞིང་། །

ah, rangnang dakpa womin shying

Ah. My own perception, in all its purity, is the realm of Akaniṣṭha,

བཀོད་པ་ལྷུན་རྫོགས་མདུན་མཁའ་རུ། །

köpa lhün dzok dün kha ru

Spontaneously perfect in arrangement; there, in the sky before me,

སེང་ཁྲི་པད་ཉི་ཟླ་བའི་སྟེང་། །

sengtri pé nyi dawé teng

Upon a lion throne, lotus, sun and moon,

རྩ་བའི་བླ་མ་ལྷོ་བྲག་པ།།

tsawé lama lho drakpa

Is my root guru in the form of Lhodrakpa,

མར་སྟོན་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་ནི། །

mar tön chökyi lodrö ni

The teacher Marpa Chökyi Lodrö.

དམར་སྨུག་ཁྲོ་ཉམས་ཕྱག་གཉིས་ཀྱི། །

marmuk tro nyam chak nyi kyi

He is reddish brown and has a wrathful expression.

པུས་སྟེང་ས་གནོན་དགེ་བསྙེན་ཆས། །

pü teng sa nön genyen ché

His two hands cover his knees and touch the earth.

སྤྱན་གཉིས་ལྟ་སྟངས་ཧུར་བག་གཟིགས། །

chen nyi tatang hur bak zik

He wears upāsaka dress and his two eyes gaze intently.

ཞབས་ཟུང་རྡོ་རྗེའི་སྐྱིལ་ཀྲུང་བཞུགས། །

shyabzung dorjé kyiltrung shyuk

His sits with his two legs crossed in vajra posture.

སྐུ་ལ་རྒྱུད་སྡེའི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་རྫོགས། །

ku la gyüdé kyilkhor dzok

Within his body all the tantric maṇḍalas are complete.

གནས་གསུམ་ཡིག་འབྲུ་གསུམ་གྱིས་མཚན། །

né sum yikdru sum gyi tsen

His three centres are marked with three syllables,

འོད་འཕྲོས་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྤྱན་དྲངས་གྱུར།

ö trö yeshe chendrang gyur

From which light radiates out to invite the wisdom beings.

ཡན་ལག་བདུན་པ་རྒྱས་བསྡུས་ཅི་རིགས་དང་། མཎྜལ་ཡང་ཕུལ།

Perform the seven branches elaborately or concisely as appropriate; also offer a maṇḍala.

དཔལ་དགྱེས་མཛད་རྡོ་རྗེ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ། །

pal gyé dzé dorjé trulpé ku

Nirmāṇakāya emanation of glorious Hevajra,

རྗེ་མར་པ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་ལ། །

jé marpa chökyi lodrö la

Lord Marpa Chökyi Lodrö,

ཡིད་རྩེ་གཅིག་གུས་པས་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

yi tsechik güpé solwa deb

With one-pointed mind and in devotion, I pray to you:

མཆོག་ཐུན་མོང་དངོས་གྲུབ་སྩལ་དུ་གསོལ། །

chok tünmong ngödrub tsal du sol

Grant me supreme and ordinary attainments, I pray.

ཡེ་ཤེས་རྡོ་རྗེའི་བྱིན་ཆེན་ཕོབ། །

yeshe dorjé jin chen pob

Shower down the blessings of your vajra wisdom.

Inspire me to realize the genuine nature of my mind.

ཅེས་དང་།

And:

སྙིང་སྟོབས་ཆེན་པོས་འཕགས་ཡུལ་ལན་མང་བགྲོད། །

nyingtob chenpö pakyul len mang drö

With great courage, you travelled many times to the noble land.

ཤེས་རབ་ཆེན་པོས་ཆོས་ཀུན་ཐུགས་སུ་ཆུད། །

sherab chenpö chö kün tuk su chü

With great wisdom, you realized the nature of all phenomena.

བརྩོན་འགྲུས་ཆེན་པོས་སྒྲུབ་པའི་རྒྱལ་མཚན་བཙུག །

tsöndrü chenpö drubpé gyaltsen tsuk

With great diligence, you raised the victory banner of accomplishment.

ལོ་ཙཱ་ཆེན་པོའི་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས། །

lotsa chenpö shyab la solwa deb

Great lotsāwa, at your feet I pray.

ཞེས་པས་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ།

Offer prayer in this way.

ཨོཾ་ཨཱཿགུ་རུ་དྷརྨ་མ་ཏི་སརྦ་སིདྡྷི་ཕ་ལ་ཧཱུྃ།

om ah guru dharma mati sarwa siddhi pala hung

oṃ āḥ guru dharmamati sarva siddhi phala hūṃ

ཞེས་པའི་མཚན་སྔགས་ཅི་ནུས་སུ་བཟླ།

Recite this name mantra as many times as possible.

མ་ནམ་མཁའ་དང་མཉམ་པའི་སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་བླ་མ་སངས་རྒྱས་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ། །

ma namkha dang nyampé semchen tamché lama sangye rinpoche la solwa deb so

All mother sentient beings as infinite as space pray to the guru, the precious buddha,

དེ་བཞིན་དུ་སྦྱར་ཏེ།

Then add the following:

བླ་མ་ཀུན་ཁྱབ་ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྐུ་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ། །

lama künkhyab chö kyi ku la solwa deb so

Pray to the guru, the all-pervasive dharmakāya.

བླ་མ་བདེ་ཆེན་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་རྫོགས་པའི་སྐུ་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ། །

lama dechen longchö dzokpé ku la solwa deb so

Pray to the guru, the saṃbhogakāya of great bliss.

བླ་མ་ཐུགས་རྗེ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་སོ། །

lama tukjé trulpé ku la solwa deb so

Pray to the guru, the compassionate nirmāṇakāya.

ཞེས་ཡང་ཡང་བྱས་མཐར།

Repeat these many times. Then recite:

བདག་དང་སེམས་ཅན་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱི་བློ་ཆོས་སུ་འགྲོ་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ།

dak dang semchen tamché kyi lo chö su drowar jingyi lab tu sol

Grant your blessings, I pray, so that I and all sentient beings may turn our minds towards the Dharma.

ཆོས་ལམ་དུ་འགྲོ་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ།

chö lam du drowar jingyi lab tu sol

Grant your blessings, I pray, so that Dharma may progress along the path.

ལམ་འཁྲུལ་པ་སེལ་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ།

lam trulpa selwar jingyi lab tu sol

Grant your blessings, I pray, so that the path may eliminate confusion.

འཁྲུལ་པ་ཡེ་ཤེས་སུ་འཆར་བར་བྱིན་གྱིས་བརླབ་ཏུ་གསོལ།

trulpa yeshe su charwar jingyi lab tu sol

Grant your blessings, I pray, so that confusion may dawn as wisdom.

 བླ་མའི་གནས་གསུམ་འབྲུ་གསུམ་ལས། །

lamé né sum dru sum lé

From the three syllables at the guru's three centres,

འོད་ཟེར་སྐུ་དང་སྔགས་ཕྲེང་དང་། །

özer ku dang ngak treng dang

Rays of light, buddha forms, mantra garlands,

ཕྱག་མཚན་དཔག་ཏུ་མེད་པ་འཕྲོས། །

chaktsen pak tu mepa trö

And hand implements emanate in boundless number.

རིམ་དང་ཅིག་ཅར་ཐིམ་པ་ལས། །

rim dang chikchar timpa lé

Through dissolving gradually and all at once

སྒྲིབ་དག་དབང་དང་དངོས་གྲུབ་ཐོབ། །

drib dak wang dang ngödrub tob

Obscurations are purified, empowerments and siddhis obtained.

བླ་མ་འོད་ཞུ་རང་ལ་ཐིམ། །

lama ö shyu rang la tim

The guru then melts into light and dissolves into me.

དུས་གསུམ་རྟོག་པས་མ་བསླད་པའི། །

dü sum tokpé malepé

And in a state unspoilt by thoughts of past, present or future,

རང་རིག་གཉུག་མ་ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཆེར། །

rangrig nyukma chakgya cher

Mahāmudrā, the genuine nature of my own awareness,

མ་བཅོས་རང་བབས་ངང་དུ་བཞག །

machö rangbab ngang du shyak

I settle naturally, without alteration or contrivance.

ཐུན་ལས་ལྡང་བ་ན།

Then, when rising from the session, recite:

སྐྱེ་བ་ཀུན་ཏུ་ཡང་དག་བླ་མ་དང་།

kyewa küntu yangdak lama dang

In all my lives, may I never be separated from the perfect lama,

འབྲལ་མེད་ཆོས་ཀྱི་དཔལ་ལ་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་ནས། །

dralmé chö kyi pal la longchö né

And having benefited fully from the splendour of the Dharma,

ས་དང་ལམ་གྱི་ཡོན་ཏན་རབ་རྫོགས་ཏེ། །

sa dang lam gyi yönten rabdzok té

May I perfect the qualities of the five paths and ten bhūmis,

རྡོ་རྗེ་འཆང་གི་གོ་འཕང་མྱུར་ཐོབ་ཤོག །

dorjé chang gi gopang nyur tob shok

And swiftly attain the sublime level of Vajradhara!

སོགས་ཀྱི་བསྔོ་སྨོན་བྱའོ། །

And say other prayers of dedication and aspiration.

ཅེས་པའང་དད་ལྡན་བླ་མ་མཆོག་ལྡན་ནས་ལྷ་རྫས་དང་དངུལ་དཀར་གྱི་དོང་རྩེ་བཅས་བསྐུལ་ངོར་ཆོས་ཀྱི་བློ་གྲོས་པས་ལྷོ་བྲག་སྲས་མཁར་སྤྲུལ་པའི་ལྷ་ཁང་གི་འདབ་རོལ་སྐྱེད་མོས་ཚལ་དུ་བྲིས་པ་མངྒ་ལཾ།། །།
