You typed and deleted your message about fifteen times before you even contemplated pressing send. Although your sister was an idol you had always intentionally avoided that world, despite knowing how easy it would be to piggyback off of her fame had you wanted to. You wanted to make your own success, to be revered because you were talented, not because you were Shin Ryujin’s sister. More than that the whole idol thing was kind of weird to you. Wanting fame was one thing but you couldn’t understand wanting to be idolised to that degree. It sounded exhausting and concerning. What goes up must come down and you didn’t think you could handle the moment the other shoe dropped.

The final draft of your message wasn’t eloquent but it was direct and you concluded that was all you needed. You didn’t want Jeonghan getting any strange ideas about your intentions.

Ryujin had briefly mentioned that all sns accounts were monitored so it made sense but you couldn’t help but feel as though you were being tested. Would texting him make it look as though you were reaching out for less than professional reasons? He had caught you staring at him at your show. Ugh, how mortifying. If you didn’t text him however, you would never get to the bottom of this and your phone would never recover.

Something in your gut told you that Jeonghan was lying. It wasn’t an accident at all. He simply thought it would be a good way to get your attention. You cursed yourself for the fact that it did. You got a notification to say that Jeonghan had unsent his instagram message to you. Clearly he was being truthful in regards to covering his tracks if nothing else. It was a little absurd to you the way idols were forbidden to have lives. You couldn’t begin to imagine what a nightmare it must be for the idiots that date them. None of Ryujin’s partners had lasted long and it didn’t take a genius to work out why. You couldn’t help but wonder why idols bother trying to date in the first place. Aren’t they busy enough? You knew you were.

Since your phone was still inundated with messages and calls you opted to email Bitna, your assistant, to let her know the urgent matter had been dealt with (despite the fact that the issue was very much unresolved) and that you would be at work as expected in the morning. You thanked her for all of her help and decided to destress by working on a garment.

You focused on the whirring of the sewing machine as you hemmed the deep purple, satin shirt you were working on. Every so often your thoughts strayed to Jeonghan and you caught yourself speeding up slightly, cursing as you did so. Sewing had always been meditative to you and you would be damned if you were going to let Yoon Jeonghan ruin it.

That night she stumbled into the compound. She left bloody boot prints on hardwood floors. Blood was caked into her hair, dried onto her cheeks, stuck under her finger nails.

Bucky was a lot gentler than he seemed. So when she fell against the door frame, stained red and bruised, he held you up and carried you to his room. He sat you in the bath and scrubbed you clean.

Sometimes you wonder why he lets you touch him. You've always been cold and hardened, violent and angry and distant. You've never been afraid to hack someone to pieces, unemotional and professional like some sort of horrific butcher.

Hes like the sun, soft and warm, made of all things bright.

That night he scrubbed your hands twice, digging under your fingernails. And still you clawed at your palms, for you could still see blood. They were red raw by the time he came back, towel in hand. Your arms and shoulders were covered in claw marks of your doing, your thighs covered in little finger shaped bruises.

It was a sight to see, it ripped Bucky to shreds. He grabbed your wrists, prying them from your broken skin.

"honey, Y/N, doll!", he said, he was stern and commanding. You rocked back and forth gently, eyes glazed over, silence washing over the two of you.

"Hey!", he barked, snapping you back to reality. The tears welled then, seeing him so worried, you couldn't stand yourself.

He's so perfect, so soft and unbroken. You're a monster, a butcher, he shouldn't care for you. Not at all.

"hey, honey, look at me", he coos as you sob.

He picks you up out of the cold bathwater, wrapping you in the towel. He sits you on his bed, drying you off and pulling one of his sweatshirts over your head.

As you lie in his bed, he watches from an armchair in the corner. He's hiding in the dark, and he is scared. He is scared of the scars you might leave. He fears you.

Blood splatter paints your cheek, like gory freckles. You're still, staring straight ahead, far away.

'That's not her', Bucky says to himself, watching you stand there, back straight and stiff, 'that's the butcher'.

Blood gushed from your nose, tears welling in your eyes. They're orange and metallic as they reach your lips, salty tears mixing with your victims blood. It's a welcome taste in your mouth, it brings you closer to reality.

It's when you touch your hand to your side, and it comes back red and hot and sticky. You're shocked into reality, pain floods your body. Your nerve endings go haywire, Bucky is quick to your side, pulling you out of the concrete room, back to the jet.

He's rushed in all his actions, peeling away your blood soaked suit, applying as much pressure to the deep wound in your side. The sicko had plunged his knife into your hip, and as if that wasnt enough, twisted it for good measure. God only knows how much blood you had already lost.

The butcher takes you again, pain subsiding, you're still as nurses work on you, sewing you up.

You're dead silent for days, stuck in the medbay as you heal. You make a quick and full discovery.

You stalk to Bucky's room, desperate to know you exist. He kisses you softly, the taste of blood in your mouth. He pulls you back from the very depths of your soul, and he whispers to you as you collapse in his arms.

"you exist", he says it over and over again. Repeating it until its engrained in the cracks and crevices of your mind. You exist.

He holds you for hours, pressing kisses to your soft skin. He traces cat scratch scars on your shoulders and back. His fingers ghost over freckles and creases, and that one tattoo you got in Vegas with Nat.

You close your eyes and slow your breathing, until he thinks you're asleep. He feels safe then, safe enough to close his eyes, safe enough to be asleep and vulnerable. You slip out of his grip, you sneak out of the compound.

Hes scared of you. He cannot live in fear. So you leave, you run. You go to Bulgaria, then paris, you spend a few weeks in italy. You finally settle in Tokyo.

You live with an older woman, you call her Mama and her granddaughter, Jianan. You learn the language, you make yourself at home in the culture. You walk the city alone at night, you walk Jianan to and from school, you shop with Mama at the market.

You reprogram yourself, you break yourself down and build yourself up again. The Butcher is buried in the depth of your being, ready to jump out when she's needed. You control her.

Bucky only worries when he discovers you gone. He searches every HYDRA facility, he hunts for you in Russia, Slovakia. He searches the tallest mountains in Europe, and even dates venture into the vast forests of Alaska, and the deep jungles of the Amazon.

He's not sure how he ended up in Tokyo, he doesnt speak a word of Japanese. He can't read street signs, he cant ask for directions.

He stand on the sidewalk, staring at a street sign. He searches for any sign of familiarity, anything he can grasp onto. Then he hears it, the rare chorus that is your laugh. His eyes flick across the road, and there you are. You have a small schoolbag slung over on shoulder, and a little girl is grasping your hand while you walk. He's in shock, that cant be you, she cant be yours.

He follows you, at a safe distance. You never notice him, he wishes he knew what you were saying.

He follows you to a cozy looking house, he hears you call out to someone inside before shutting the door.

He waits until dark, then he returns. He can see your silhouette in the window, you and the little girl and another figure. It takes him a few breaths before he approaches the door, he knocks gently.

You open the door, already speaking. When you see him, you stop. Your jaw drops, you call out to the woman behind you.

"Mama, I'm gonna be a while, dont wait up"

You shut the door quietly behind you, and then you're pushing him towards the street, eagle eyes searching the street for any sign of life, and when there is none, you relax.

"hi", you smile, sighing in relief. Its mere seconds before your smile falls and relief shatters and worry takes over. "what are you doing here?"

"looking for you. you left without saying goodbye, I was worried"

"they're going to come for you, if they find out you're here, they'll- they'll kill you", you whisper in such a rushed tone.

They. They plague your every thought, they dictate your every move. You're constantly running from them, you will forever be living in shadows, hiding from them.

"they wont find us", he whispers, forcing your gaze to meet his. "you're safe"

You push him away, your hands on his shoulders, he doesn't move. You step back, exasperated.

"come home, Y/N", he pleads.

You sigh, "I cant, I have a family here"

"they're not your family, I am"

"they might as well be, please Bucky. Go"

He does, but he comes back. Once a month, sometimes more, he comes back, he begs you. Eventually, you go with him. You return to your broken family at the compound.

Bucky begins to wash your hands of metallic crimson once again, rinsing stains of old blood from supple skin once more. This time, it doesn't haunt you, it doesn't keep you awake at night. Because you have Bucky by your side, and you know he'll keep you safe.

CW:  Discussion of sizes, clothing fit, and patterns v ready to wear (other than the 1st item not really in any order)

1. first of all, if you are new to sewing you need to memorize this  *Your pattern size has nothing to do with the size you wear 'off the peg' or 'ready-to-wear.*

no, i don't care if they say something that "sounds like" ready to wear sizing.

2.  you need to take your measurements.you do not have any idea HOW to take your measurements if you are not used to buying patterns, because everyone has taught you incorrectly.    

2a. UNLESS patterns say otherwise they are fitted for a 5'6 woman with a 'B' cup size.  You want to  buy  the pattern based on your "high bust" (above your girls)  if you are larger than a B cup, and then make adjustments.  if you do not do that you will buy for the "bust measurement" and it wont fit your shoulders.  many patterns have pre-done adjustments for  C and D cups, but THEIR idea of a C and D cup may not be yours- check the fit.    

2b.  for the love of Gd do all your fittings and measurements in the same bra- or same type of bra- that you will actually be wearing the pattern with.  a strapless bra v a regular bra will change your fit.

3. worth its own bullet point:  all patterns are designed with ease (extra space for it so you can move) and/or  'design ease (how it fits, like a 'loosely fitted' top is not as tight as a 'slim fit')   

3a. If you are sewing a skirt with a snug waist, but full swishy gathers... it will fit over a wider range of hip sizes than the pattern says.      

3b. you buy your pattern based on the part of the body that is a critical fit.  if it drapes off my bust and then  is "A" line  (flares out) it doesnt matter much  if my waist is a bit larger than the pattern.    

NOTE:  if you have an *extreme* difference of size between your waist bust and hips, you may need to worry about this, but if its just a little off the measure in a loose fitting place?  dont worry about it.

4. did i mention your pattern sizes are not your RTW sizes?  i did? cool... have i mentioned that your RTW sizing is an arbitrary number that varies widely between brands anyway?you knew that? good.

4a.  fit of a pattern can also vary between vastly different brands.CHECK THE PATTERN AGAINST YOUR MEASUREMENTS because while the 'big three' you see in the fabric stores may all be similar,    EVEN those have specialty lines that use different sizing... and if you get into ANY of the other designers?  Totally different sizes.

5. you need to make a 'muslin' or test fit (pin fit) the pattern at the very least.   

5a. no, seriously you do... at least until  you have made enough similar patterns that you can check the fit against your existing work.    

5b. if you cannot bring yourself to "waste" the sewing on  a muslin?  at least either buy a 'fun fabric' to make a trial run in, or buy double of your fashion fabric.    

5c. ok, but don't swear at me when you find out you need to replace that 'perfect' fabric because the pattern doesnt fit, and now you cant find anymore.

6. If you expect to launder the clothes? you need to wash the fabric before you cut and sew it.    

6a. this is also where you keep a close eye on red, purple, blue and other super saturated colors for any sign that they are 'bleeding' and likely to end up making all your white blouses a weird pinkish color in the next wash.   

6b. some fabrics (cough linen and linen blends) fray and can generate a lot of lint- especially on the first wash. this is why many people serge or zig zag stitch the cut ends of the fabric before washing.

7. look at the pattern and choose fabrics wisely.  That  pleated swishy skirt may look really cool in a crisp  stiff fabric, but it wont be a SWISHY skirt... it will stand out away from your body...  this may be what you want, but it may not.Likewise that crisp jacket detail will look sad and wilted in a soft  drape fabric.

8. pattern photos (the models) often show the patterns in fabrics that do not help you understand the pattern at all- look at the black and white line drawing that shows you the seam lines.    

8a. also, yes, they choose really weird  fabrics for some of the photo shoots- no we don't know why.

9. seriously please get  any shame or obsession with "sizes" out of your mind (in general but in sewing especially).    

9a. no one will see your size number: it doesn't appear on the back of your dress, but if it makes you feel better put a label in everything you sew  with whatever size you like.    

9b seriously? sizes are not even consistent in RTW, and they are not the same across different pattern lines.  the whole point of sewing is to make the clothes fit you.    

9c. honestly you can get professionally made clothes labels and put whatever size you want on them. a friend who made clothing actually named her sizes after the fit models she used,  so Roseamund and other names were *sizes*... its cool.  your clothes should be YOU sized.

10. pattern making and alteration sounds scary, but even if you dont want to do it at all? some things are really easy.    

10a. some patterns  come with interchangeable parts, so once you make one outfit that fits, you can wip up a dozen with different necklines, sleeves, amounts of swish in the skirts, length in the pants, pockets...    

10b. certain changed are easy- peasy.  change the fabric  (remember the crisp versus draped fabrics?), make it dressy or casual,  changing pleats into gathers (or vice versa) add trim, pockets, embroidery, lengthen or shorten it.    

10c. some changes are a bit more skilled, BUT STILL WITHIN BEGINNER capabilities, just  take your time!add an over-layer of lace (in whole or in part), add width to a sleeve and make it a dolman or a flutter sleeve, add width to the skirt, changing it from a straight skirt to a full skirt, add a colored insert, or 'slot seams' (not as hard as it sounds, trust me)

you can LITERALLY make hundreds of outfits out of a good basic pattern set by making minor adjustments!

Personality: I feel that she used to be a very powerful person who has it all, but I have a feeling that her past experiences in relationships or maybe just a masculine figure might have affected her very much, that now reflected for her in the present moment.. She has a secret side, as if she can be rebellious but that does not have to be a bad thing.

Lover?: I feel her lover is older than her or someone who is a very wise, responsible man, professional and practical, he feels like a good man who has a lot to give. Someone who is very successful in his career and wealthy. an idol. She might have turned him down before but she wants to give the relationship a chance, she is stressed out but she can't let go. because she knew she feels a special connection with him.

Soojin

Personality: She is someone who is great in teamwork, she is creative with her hands, writing and art and sewing can help her calm her down. She loves to invest in her work and she is social and talkative and she loves to get to know the tea and spill the tea. She is passionate and puts a lot of emotions in her work and will also expressively let people know that she is happy or having a bad mood. She might be a slowest student in learning new skills but if she is mastering it she will be very artistic and very good with it.

Lover?: Her lover is loyal, honorable, friendly and humble. He is slow in his movements and is serious in his commitments. (somehow Miyeon, Minnie, lovers could be from the same boy-group.)

Because she thinks that people will give her something back in return but she experiences disappointments. She has a soft side but she also pretends to be bigger than she actually is. She loves to talk about specific topics that she is interested in but if there is nothing else she has her mouth on silent and is in her own world.

Lover?: I feel she is experiencing new feelings of love. it is someone who might be emotionally unavailable. she might just have a crush on him. education headcanons: a guide*

          a lot of these headcanons aren’t set in stone due to the fact i’m just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about some muse’s specific education path, but i thought it’d be helpful to lay out some basics i’ve never explicitly expressed on this blog for the sake of reference and access! 

          after completing high school, alison enrolled in an arts program at a local university but only completed one full semester before withdrawing due to unforeseen financial difficulties. ever since, alison has not returned to school formally, though she continues to hone in her sewing, artistic, and designing skills via workshops offered to the public taught by some professionals in the fields she’s interested in. as such, her learning is a bit unstructured and scattered, but it’s more manageable for her and her current position in her career. likewise, the veterans of her workplace take alison under their wing and show her a lot about the fashion industry, and alison’s aunt teaches alison about some of the business aspects of running a company. you could say, then, that alison’s schooling is very immersive. if asked whether she’ll ever return to school in the future, assuming she can afford it, alison is very ambivalent. she’s more likely to pursue an official degree if she sees a real need to, though with how things are going, she doesn’t seem to have that need.

          leah graduated high school with high honors and ranked within the top ten of her class. she currently attends a large university and is pursing a bachelor’s of science in psychology. because of the type of degree she is pursing, leah has to take a wide range of required general education classes, even if they seem to not quite align with her psychology major. she’s canonically only in her second year of school, and after graduation, she intends to go on to get a master’s in educational psychology ( which is different from school psychology btw! ) so that she can work with children in the school system in the future. 

          in some timelines i’ve plotted with mutuals, leah actually continues with her psychology studies and goes on to get a phd and also remains very involved in academia such that she actually is a university professor, so this is an alternate route for leah’s future too!! it’s more likely that leah would be heavily involved in research rather than providing services to the public if she takes on this route, but a person’s path is rarely straightforward so it’s possible she does a bit of everything tbh. 

          emile knew from the get-go that he’d stick with community college right after high school. he told a lot of people that he was going to follow his father’s footsteps and be a lawyer, but deep down, he wasn’t really sure if that was something he’d actually enjoy. still, emile remains on that path for a bit, completing the necessary associate’s degree that will allow him to grasp the basics to be a legal assistant, and that’s kind of where he’s at right now in terms of career and education. he knows he wants to go back to school, and his he’s learning towards a history degree, but the question is always what do i even do with that, so you can imagine his reservation. also — money. 

          grace is still very young, so her path is very flexible, but i definitely headcanon that she completes high school as either valedictorian or salutatorian ( assuming everything goes well for her because, you know, colleges don’t like academic dishonesty ), gets into a really prestigious university, and just knocks it out of the ball park with her time in university both academic and extra-curricular wise. i’m not really sure what sort of degree grace would pursue, but i could see her studying music and trying her hand at composing. it’s also likely that grace studies economics or business since i like to imagine that after university, or maybe even during it, she gets involved in a start up company of some sort or just really involved in business in general. grace is out to be a ceo so watch out!

          i dont talk about cedric’s education a lot, but i actually do have a solid headcanon that he’s a business major. his university days were like kind of what you’d imagine for a rich white boy — he sailed through his classes and partied a lot along he way, and of course, because of who he was, he was practically untouchable, unfalliable, even though we all know that’s not true. but yeah, in canon, i guess you could say cedric has been out of school for a few years now and is definitely doing a lot of business owning seeing as how, while a bartender, he still co-owns the bar he works in and is trying to start his own business as well. 

         idk what the fuck nate does honestly, but i imagine it’s not a lot of schooling. if he did go to university, it’s because cedric was paying for it, or, it’s that the two boys lived together while cedric was in university, so nate got access to the social side of uni without actually doing the uni work. i kind of doubt that nate formally attended university after high school, and it’s probably more likely that he went to community college for a few classes to get by, but seeing as how he has terrible work ethic, it’s likely he doesn’t complete a formal degree. still, i imagine nate can really focus in non-traditional classroom setting, and by that, i mean like, online classes. so you can imagine how much he actually thrives when taking online classes for subjects he’s actually interested in, so i feel like he’d be a fan of skillshare and sites like that that make knowledge more accessible even if it is a subscription. that’s probably how nate manages to develop his craft despite being a lazy bum at home honestly. 

          my boi aito actually hated school when he was in high school surprisingly enough. it was during high school did he develop a big “fuck you” attitude to figures of authority in his school, but he mellowed out a lot in university once he got to experience a bit more freedom in classes and pathways. aito did well in high school though, following a similar path as leah and graduating at the top of his class, which confused a lot of people because he wasn’t even in class for the most part. but anyway, in university, aito is an engineering student, but he also took a lot of classes in computer science and astronomy for the fun of it. 

          he does go on to get a master’s, and similar to leah, he does have a potential route where he gets really involved in academia and becomes a professor who teaches physics and astronomy classes while conduction his own research. dare i say aito would ever combine these two subjects and deepen his study in astrophysics instead of engineering if he ever had the chance to??? potentially!! honestly, aito is such a flexible muse when it comes to academics because i swear, he just wants to learn everything. the sky’s the limit with him, tbh.

Doctors suggest you dont take your beauty tips from TikTok “I always know when something is trending on TikTok because I’ll have an influx of patients coming in and asking me about the same thing,” says Dr Niket Sonpal, a gastroenterologist. Most of the time, that “thing” is a beauty or wellness tip that’s gone viral on the video-sharing platform, without evidence that it actually works. The advice may be ineffective or outright dangerous, from drinking chlorophyll to induce weight loss, to using sunscreen only in select areas to “naturally” contour your face. “We talk about TikTok all the time in my office,” says Dr Dendy Engelman, a dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, “and I think it might be worse than other platforms because people are really looking to create content with that wow factor, the thing that will go viral, even if it’s not grounded in science.” It’s not surprising that the app that brought us the “Benadryl challenge” (taking large doses of the antihistamine to induce hallucinations) and “the Everclear test” (doing shots of the high-proof alcohol) is not a fount of doctor-approved beauty guidance. But many consumers throw reason and caution to the wind when faced with these trends, underscoring a growing subversion of authority in which an influencer’s word is replacing that of experts. “It’s funny because patients are often so timid in our office about trying treatments,” Engelman says. “But when they see something done on Instagram from an 18-year-old influencer, they’re like, ‘Sure!’” What not to try at home Compiling an exhaustive list of TikTok’s bad beauty advice is next to impossible because the content on the platform seems to multiply in step with our increasingly short attention spans and insatiable craving for the new. But a few trends that have dominated the platform of late are especially mind-boggling to doctors. If people are seeing ‘results’ from drinking chlorophyll, it’s likely because they’re drinking more water than normal, so their skin is getting better and their bathroom trips are more regular Dr Niket Sonpal Take “slugging,” a TikTok trend advising people to sleep with a thick layer of Vaseline on their face to aid hydration. Videos with the hashtag have 14.4 million views on the platform, and the trend has been promoted by influencers like Hyram Yarbro and Cait Kiernan. But dermatologists warn that it can have adverse effects on your skin. “Putting an occlusive on your skin and letting it sit overnight sets you up for exacerbating clogged pores and breakouts,” Engelman says. Then there’s the “sunscreen contouring”, which dermatologist Dr Neera Nathan heard about, to her horror, from one of her patients. Some influencers have advised people tired of contouring their faces with makeup to use a thick sunscreen with high SPF, applying it only on the areas they want to highlight, like the top of the cheekbones and bridge of the nose. The rest of the face is left to tan (and burn), sunscreen free. It’s a tip that flies in the face of the American Academy of Dermatology’s recommendation that everyone wear a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 on any exposed skin. “We know that this is crucial to do from a very young age from both a skin cancer and anti-aging perspective, so the idea that these videos are suggesting otherwise to a very young audience is disturbing,” Nathan says. In April, drinking chlorophyll, which has had moments on other social media platforms, had a spike in interest on TikTok, driven by the endorsements of influencers like Amelie Zilber, according to Traackr, an influencer marketing platform. It has been called a “miracle product” that can increase energy levels, induce weight loss and clear up skin, but doctors say these claims are not backed by research. Drinking chlorophyll is one of the more harmless recommendations on TikTok, but it’s likely to be a waste of money. (Raw chlorophyll drops on Amazon cost about £15, on average.) “If people are seeing ‘results’ from drinking chlorophyll, it’s likely because they’re drinking more water than normal, so their skin is getting better and their bathroom trips are more regular,” Sonpal, the gastroenterologist, says. What trend do doctors really want to see left to the professionals? Microneedling, which involves puncturing the skin with tiny needles in an effort to generate new collagen. On TikTok, conversation around at-home microneedling grew in 2020 and is already experiencing five times more engagement in 2021, per Traackr, but experts say it’s incredibly risky to do at home. While some studies have shown that medical-grade microneedling can improve skin suppleness and lessen wrinkles, “it needs to be done in a really clean, safe setting,” Engelman says, pointing to the high risk of infection. “If you go hard enough on your skin, it can lead to colour change, textural change and scarring, essentially worsening what you’re trying to make look better, like fine lines and acne scars.” Viewer, beware Tilly Whitfeld, a reality TV star from Australia’s Big Brother, has learned firsthand just how dangerous beauty trends can be. After spending her time on the 24-hour surveillance-style show wearing clay face masks or heavy makeup, she was questioned by viewers about what she was hiding and confessed vaguely on Instagram in May that a TikTok beauty trend had damaged her skin. Whitfeld, 21, says by phone from Sydney that she hadn’t told anyone exactly what it was because she “knew” she would look like an idiot. Last August, she was browsing TikTok when she came across a video teaching people how to give themselves freckles using sewing needles and ink that were said to fade within six months. Since the video didn’t clarify what type of ink to get, she ordered brown tattoo ink she found on eBay, which she later discovered was a counterfeit product made with high levels of lead, and began pricking her face in a freckle pattern. “It didn’t hurt at all, so I didn’t think I should stop,” says Whitfeld, who went over the marks multiple times, as advised by the video’s creator. There weren’t any faux freckles, and her face swelled up from infection, which caused her to briefly lose sight in one eye, she says, and she now has scarring across her cheeks and nose. With nearly $12,000 already sunk into doctor’s visits, Whitfeld has yet to find a solution to correct the damage. Laser removal is apparently not an option because, doctors have told her, the ink she used will turn black rather than fade. “The main response has been that I’m stupid, and, yeah, I agree,” she says. I haven't posted on Tumblr in so long, but I needed to share something a patient of mine's dad wrote. It hits all of my emotions so hard...

This is a long post, specifically written for fellow believers in Christ who have chosen to not get themselves vaccinated. It may come across as quite direct. It may cause one to feel uncomfortable or confronted. Please know that I've written all of this because I love you, I want you to take care of yourselves and your neighbors, and I care deeply for my family, especially our Adair who is put at risk by all unvaccinated people. If you're a fellow Christian who is unvaccinated, please read this, even if you haven't read anything else I've written on the pandemic or vaccines. Here we go...

A friend had some wise words for me today as we were discussing the pandemic, vaccines, and our faith. He said that he believes bible study is the effort to know God's will, and science is the effort to know God's work.

I thought that this was profound and wanted to share some of my intersecting thoughts on this.

In my opinion, modern, American, Evangelical Christianity has increasingly become linked to a general distrust of science. Concurrently, the Republican Party has increasingly sought to brand themselves as the Christian Party (especially since the 1980s with Ronald Reagan), and not only that, but they've sought to demonize the Democratic Party. I'm mentioning both of these concepts, because they are interwoven in today's political and religious landscapes.

For many American Christians, it is deeply woven into the fabric of their lives that they must vote for a Republican in order to be a good Christian (I used to believe this myself). Furthermore, they believe that the word of God is in opposition to scientific discovery. Now don't get me wrong, I'm actually much more conservative in my biblical interpretation than you'd think, but I also believe that the earth is God's creation, broken by sin, but is still his creation, just as we all are. Scientific discovery is a gift from God and further reveals God's work in our lives. It is not the enemy.

Because many American Christians have universally linked their faith with the Republican Party and have put their faith on par with their loyalty to the party, they have set up a construct where they have made anything and everything that is in opposition to the Republican Party an enemy in the name of faith.

This all has been going on for decades, and has really come to a head over the last several years. Before I make additional statements, I want to make it clear that I believe (and the bible teaches) that all people are sinful from birth. I believe that when we put our faith in people as opposed to God and Jesus, we will always be let down. This is true, regardless of denomination, political party, etc.

All of that being said, I believe that the devil has been at work in these divisions and linkages. Here, I want to specifically focus on how the devil has been delighting in the alignment of Christianity with the Republican Party in America. I believe we saw that on full display with the election of Donald Trump. In my opinion, through Donald Trump, the devil worked to see how far he could push Christians away from the teachings of Christ. Donald Trump said that he was a Christian, but he also said that he didn't need forgiveness (example of that here: https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-on-god-i-dont-like-to-have-to-ask-for-forgiveness-2016-1). This is a cornerstone of Christianity - the knowledge that we are sinful, in need of Christ's forgiveness, and that faith in his saving work on the cross and resurrection is the path to heaven. There are so many examples of Donald Trump's overt bullying, lying, xenophobia, cheating, horrible business practices, and the list goes on (I use the word overt, because Donald Trump has been bold in his un-Christian behaviors, seeing them as a badge of honor) - yet the Republican Party and an overwhelming number of Christians have followed along in the name of faith. From my perspective, this is exactly what the devil wanted. He wanted to see how far he could push people away from the teachings of the bible by following an antichrist as the leader of this nation.

Don't get me wrong, there are countless examples throughout history of leaders from all political persuasions that have been terrible witnesses for Christ, even though they said they were Christians. Donald Trump is the first one that I'm aware of, though, that claimed to be a Christian yet stated that he didn't need Christ's forgiveness. That is critical for the Christian person to consider.

Donald Trump is, objectively, a compulsive liar and master manipulator. I can hear people now - so are all politicians. Ok, I get it. Many are, yes, and increasingly so in order to win votes. BUT, Donald Trump was so compulsive in his lying that he would lie about things that were irrelevant. He couldn't help himself in his lying. In my opinion, Trump, a lifelong Democrat, knew of the linkage between Christianity and the Republican Party, and used that to his advantage. He claimed to be a Christian even though he isn't. He claimed to be pro-life (THE issue for Republican, Christian voters), even though he's been pro-choice his entire life. And he branded himself as the person who was going to look out for the little guy, be the hero of the all-American family, and bring back American values and strength. But what he did was tap into things that have been building for decades and things that have been lying under the surface for a long time - the linkage between Christianity and Republican Party, underlying systems of racism and oppression; he built upon the strong emotion of fear and made immigrants his enemies, he made the made-up issue of voter fraud come alive in people's minds, and he sought to pit one side against the other, winner take all, at all costs.

His strategy was working in a lot of ways too. And then a novel coronavirus struck the world. And for Donald Trump, a man that refuses to be anything but a strong-man, refuses to acknowledge that he needs help from anybody or anything, a man that believes that he knows all and knows best, the virus moved upon him and our country with a vengeance (and continues to do so).

This virus doesn't care about political affiliation, personalities, conspiracy theories, or anything else. It seeks viable hosts in which to replicate and improve itself through variants.

And because of Donald Trump's ignorance and arrogance, because of his nepotism, because of his belief that he cannot be conquered, over 600,000 Americans have died due to COVID-19. Furthermore, his sewing of conspiracy theories, lies, deception, misinformation, etc have caused a large portion of our country to doubt cold, hard facts, to doubt credible experts, to doubt medical professionals, to doubt experts in communicable disease in favor of what have been deemed the only sources of credible information - Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Donald Trump and his enablers have sewed seeds of discord and doubt in their followers to the extent that facts are viewed as fiction. They have willfully spread lies about this virus and about the vaccines.

And all the while, Christians who have conflated their loyalty to party with their faith are praying for an end to this pandemic when one has been staring them in the faces for months. God's gift of science - that effort to know God's amazing work - quickly discovered a way to neutralize a global pandemic. The answer to our prayers is already here in the form of a vaccine. It is a fact that COVID-19 is deadly serious and it's only getting worse with the Delta Variant. It's also a fact that the vaccines are miraculously safe and effective. We don't know with certainty the long-term effects of COVID or the vaccines, but we do know a lot about the short-term and medium-term effects of them. COVID-19 is deadly, and it also damages multiple organs systems within the body, even in cases with few symptoms, leading to what will likely be long-term disabilities. The vaccines may have some minor risks that are easily treatable, but their benefits outweigh the risks by multiple orders of magnitude. Additionally, almost all vaccine injuries occur in the very near term, so with the data we have, it's logical to believe that the vaccines will be safe in the long-term, whereas COVID continues to show us that it will be devastating in the long-term.

The vaccines are the answer to our prayers, and it continues to befuddle me as to why so many right-leaning Christians refuse to acknowledge that fact.

I'll go a few steps further and say some things that have been on my heart. The job of the Christian this side of the resurrection is to be a witness for Christ and a light in this world. By promoting false conspiracy theories, by propping up wicked men and their actions, by denying facts and science, and by latching onto verifiably false beliefs, the Christian-Right has weakened the credibility of its witness for Jesus. If our role as Christians is to talk credibly to non-believers about Jesus and his saving work, why would any non-believer believe us about an invisible God if we are promoting verifiably false information? When we deny proven truth, facts, science, and reality, we hurt the credibility of our witness for Jesus. Our job isn't to try and look good for our fellow Christians - it's to be a credible witness for Jesus.

I'll end this with a desperate plea for everybody to get vaccinated who is medically able to do so as well as an excerpt from the writings of Martin Luther on the plague:

"Others sin on the right hand. They are much too rash and reckless, tempting God and disregarding everything which might counteract death and the plague. They disdain the use of medicines; they do not avoid places and persons infected by the plague, but lightheartedly make sport of it and wish to prove how independent they are. They say that it is God’s punishment; if he wants to protect them he can do so without medicines or our carefulness. This is not trusting God but tempting him. God has created medicines and provided us with intelligence to guard and take good care of the body so that we can live in good health.

If one makes no use of intelligence or medicine when he could do so without detriment to his neighbor, such a person injures his body and must beware lest he become a suicide in God’s eyes. By the same reasoning a person might forego eating and drinking, clothing and shelter, and boldly proclaim his faith that if God wanted to preserve him from starvation and cold, he could do so without food and clothing. It is even more shameful for a person to pay no heed to his own body and to fail to protect it against the plague the best he is able, and then to infect and poison others who might have remained alive if he had taken care of his body as he should have. Instead they give leeway to the flames so that the whole city is consumed, saying that if God so willed, he could save the city without water to quench the fire.

No, my dear friends, that is no good. Use medicine; take potions which can help you; fumigate house, yard, and street; shun persons and places wherever your neighbor does not need your presence or has recovered, and act like a man who wants to help put out the burning city. What else is the epidemic but a fire which instead of consuming wood and straw devours life and body? You ought to think this way: “Very well, by God’s decree the enemy has sent us poison and deadly offal. Therefore I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine, and take it. Consigning stuff from my NYC days; transition from baby to toddler items

Ah! Its 11:20pm and I almost forgot to do this tonight. I was just surfing the net for the past hour. I made a calendar invite so hopefully I can avoid this in the future.

Thanks to the Artist’s Way, been trying out a reading fast. It’s haphazard but I try not to read in the evening, when I really want to munch on junk food and browse the internet. I have been organizing and purging in the evenings with all this newfound time. 

I am in a huuuge transition and it feels great, exciting, thrilling. G is 19mo old. 1.5 years. He is no longer a baby. I organized all his baby gear. I have clear and organized bags of newborn stuff, 6mo + stuff, breastfeeding stuff, etc. It feels sooo good. I am so relieved. Coupled with the relief that I do not need to have a second baby anytime soon. So much internal pressure I generate. So much what I “should” do. I am taking time to listen to what I want to do.

I am asking for time, for permission to have a childhood with G. I want this year to be fun, carefree, to declutter, to get rid of stuff that is mediocre, not useful, doesnt serve us. I want this year to beautify our home. To make things pretty. I want to learn to sew to use my hands to make beautiful things. 

I tidied up my breast pump and supplies. Ready to donate to another person but not sure how. There is so much waste and cost with child-raising. I wish I knew of a clearer way to efficiently get rid of stuff -- instead of on Facebook’s forums. I am not keen on having my personal address and infos on Facebook. Craigslist seems to do a better job of keeping it anonymous. I have been donating stuff to Goodwill but I suspect their mission is full of holes. I am also experimenting with consignment and re-selling online. We’ll see how that goes.

I am excited to finally start to let go of the vestiges of my NYC life. When I bought beautiful designer things only bc they were less expensive than normal (Not bc they were affordable by any means) and when I bought things with ex-R’s tastes in mind (his approvals, disapprovals, disdain, poking fun). Often those purchases ended up being uncomfortable and went unworn, or some were worn when I was at 128lb, running 5 miles a day. 

I have so many leather shoes that I want to unload. Wool pants, wool coat. I dont have to dress for anyone else ever again. I think. Is this true?? God. That is freeing on such a deep level that it has taken my about 4 years to start to accept it. All the clothes I was keeping for a “Just in case” I need to look smart, put together, professional, etc. I dont need to do that anymore. I think I will always be self-employed (if not with our current biz, then with another biz), or if not, I will be brave enough to find work that is not white-collar and not-professional. I love this. I dont have to dress for anyone but myself. No more fitted skirts. No more fitted legs (I can barely tolerate skinny jeans now). I like a loose bottom half, an A-line, a fit-and-flare. The only fitted part could be the blouse area. That is the perfect silhouette for me. I dont need to experiment too much for now...well..a part of me wants to keep it simple, comfortable and fun. And another part of me wants to play and experiment. I wear so many colors now. I used to mainly wear and buy black bc it was easier to match with other items, and bc I didnt want any attention and I didnt find much fun in playing with color. Now I do find it fun. I want to experiment with color, with shapes, with proportions. 

I am trying to accept my weight, my shape, my size. 130-135 pounds is my resting spot without much working out and without dieting. Eh. That is where i am right now.
