The Texas A&M University Professor Joy Alonzo criticized the Texas Lieutenant Governor, Dan Patrick, during a visiting lecture in March 2023 on the opioid crisis at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.
Just hours later, Alonzo learned a student accused her of disparaging Patrick during the lecture. The complaint reached her supervisors and the Chancellor of Texas A&M, John Sharp, who was in communication directly with the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
The student is reportedly the daughter of the Texas Land Commissioner, Dawn Buckingham, who served in the Texas senate with Patrick for six years, received an endorsement from him in her run for Land Commissioner, and had attended Sharp’s wedding in May.
Less than two hours after the lecture had ended, Patrick’s chief of staff forwarded Alonzo’s professional biography to Sharp, reported the Texas Tribune. The Chancellor responded to the Lieutenant Governor directly via text message that Alonzo would immediately be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation to fire her.
The University of Texas Medical Board quickly issued a censure statement, distancing itself from any comments Alonzo made during the lecture.
Texas A&M and the University of Texas Medical Board did not specify what Alonzo said during the lecture that prompted the investigation. Students interviewed by the Texas Tribune only recalled a vague reference to Patrick during the lecture on opioid overdose policies. Texas A&M ultimately allowed Alonzo to retain her job after the investigation did not reveal any wrongdoing.
The swift investigation sparked criticism from Alonzo’s colleagues and free speech advocates over the interference of politicians into classroom discussions and how state universities are managed.
Adam Steinbaugh, an attorney with the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a non-profit legal group focused on protecting free speech on college campuses, criticized the investigation as “inappropriate” in an interview with the Tribune and noted its chilling effect, regardless of the outcome of the investigation.
Marcia Ory, a professor at Texas A&M Health and co-chair of the university’s Opioid Task Force with Alonzo, noted the long-term consequences of the interference in an email to Jon Mogford, vice-president of Texas A&M Health.
The reporting of the suspension and investigation of Alonzo comes as the Texas A&M President, Katherine Banks, resigned last week over the backlash to politically motivated outsiders halting the hiring by the university of Kathleen McElroy, a Black journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin, to revive the journalism school at Texas A&M.
On Alonzo, a spokesperson for the university system told the Tribune: “It is not unusual to respond to any state official who has concerns about anything occurring at the Texas A&M System,” claiming the system followed standard procedure investigating the claim against Alonzo.
The Guardian has contacted Texas A&M, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Joy Alonzo for further comment.

24TH INFANTRY REGIMENT  -1917 Houston Texas
Fed up with violent discrimination, these black soldiers took to the streets of Houston for bloody revenge
When it was over, 19 black soldiers were hanged in one of the largest court-martials in U.S. history
FOR THE  SOURCE AND FULL STORY BY COSHANDRA DILLARD She is a Writer specializing in social justice, history and culture, health and wellness.
Tumblr media
EXCERPT LISTED BELOW
IT was raining on the night of August 23, 1917, when a group of black soldiers took to the streets in Houston. They were there to protest their inhumane treatment and to avenge the death of a fellow soldier.
By the end of the night, 20 people would be dead, resulting in one of the largest court-martials in American military history and, ultimately, the death by hanging of 19 black soldiers.
Camp Logan housed one particularly noteworthy group: the all-black Third Battalion of the 24th infantry. They were the successors of the famed Buffalo Soldiers, African American regiments who fought courageously on the western frontier. City officials assured the military that the black soldiers wouldn’t pose any problems.  When the Third Battalion arrived, they found that city officials’ promises had been empty.
Tumblr media
Racial tensions were already high in Texas, and indeed across the country, even before the arrival of the Third Battalion. Texas was a forcefully segregated state with a reputation for racist violence. Lynchings had occurred all over the state, in cities such as Temple, Waco, and Galveston.
Black Americans were also still reeling from the recent, widely reported riots in East St. Louis, Illinois, by white mobs that left dozens of African Americans dead and communities decimated.
As historian Robert V. Haynes describes in The Houston Mutiny and Riot of 1917, white Houstonians wanted to keep black soldiers in check, so that black civilians wouldn’t also demand equal treatment.
While in the city, soldiers endured racial slurs and discrimination from residents and police officers. The mere presence of the black men in uniform threatened to undo the social hierarchy, and white residents clung to the old order.
Haynes recounts incidents in which police officers pistol-whipped and arrested black soldiers who tried to intervene when black civilians were harassed by white residents for sitting in “white only” sections on the streetcars or drinking from “white only” fountains.
The black soldiers resented being called “niggers” and insisted that they should be referred to as “colored men.” The riot began when two mounted white police officers, Rufus Daniels and Lee Sparks, assaulted Private Alonzo Edwards for interfering in the arrest of a black woman.
Later, when Corporal Charles Baltimore, a black man in the battalion, tried to inquire about the arrest, it irritated the officers. Sparks struck him with a pistol and shot at him three times. Baltimore fled, but police pursued him until he was cornered in an unoccupied house. He was arrested, but by the time news reached the camp, Baltimore’s fellow black soldiers assumed he was dead.
At least 100 men from different companies marched into the city around 9 p.m. They went to the San Felipe district, a historic black community, in search of Lee Sparks and Rufus Daniels, the two officers involved in the Baltimore arrest.
They found Daniels, whom they killed, along with three other officers. As they moved through the city, they encountered civilians and shot them at random. All in all, 20 people were killed that night. The other men either returned to the camp or hid in black residents’ homes, where they were captured the following day.
As the disarmed black soldiers boarded a train out of Houston a few days later, they left behind a piece of paper that read: “Take Texas and go to hell. I don’t want to go there anymore in my life. Let’s go East and be treated as people.”
Thirteen black soldiers were hung at Camp Travis, by September 1918, following two additional court-martial cases, 53 soldiers were given life sentences and six more soldiers were hung at Camp Travis.

Cardano ETF on the Horizon: Founder Charles Hoskinson Sparks Discussion
Key Points
Speculation about a potential Cardano ETF has drawn mixed reactions and a 5% drop in ADA’s price.
The upcoming Chang Hard Fork and historical data fuel optimism for future ADA gains.
The approval of Ethereum [ETH] ETFs has sparked interest in the possibility of a Cardano [ADA] ETF.
Possible Cardano ETF
The speculation was triggered by a post on X by Tap Tools, a platform that tracks tokens, NFTs, and wallets on the Cardano blockchain. The post asked if a Cardano ETF could be next, causing a stir within the crypto community.
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson responded with a superhero-themed GIF and the caption “Fine, I’ll do it myself,” fueling further speculation within the Cardano community.
However, not everyone was thrilled. An X user named Batman expressed disappointment, stating, “We don’t want a Cardano ETF.”
ADA Price Reaction
Contrary to the excitement, ADA’s price dropped more than 5% in the past 24 hours. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) also confirmed this bearish sentiment, staying below the neutral threshold at 44.
The Bollinger Bands also suggested reduced volatility, indicating that the bearish trend might continue. But an analysis of IntoTheBlock data by AMBCrypto revealed a balanced sentiment in the ADA market, with no clear dominance of bulls or bears.
Upcoming Chang Hard Fork
Despite these developments, the crypto community is eagerly awaiting the Chang Hard Fork, which is expected to boost ADA’s value. This optimism is backed by historical data. During the previous Alonzo Hard Fork in August 2021, ADA’s price soared by 130%, from $1.35 to $3.10.
The community is hopeful for similar gains with the Chang upgrade and the potential introduction of an ADA ETF. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse had already predicted a Cardano ETF, stating, “I think it’s just a matter of time, and it’s inevitable there’s gonna be an XRP ETF, there’s gonna be a Solana ETF, there’s gonna be a Cardano ETF, and that’s great.”

AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MIND JOURNEY
NEWS FLASH!
I, Kiana F. Palmares, am not that interested with entrepreneurial mind in the first place. However, this subject has sparked something in me. It kind of tickled my mind to do and explore some things about this field. Through this course, I have learned to turn problems into opportunities. I have also realized that this field is not that easy as it may seem to others. Moreso, I learned how to manage my time properly, and how to interact with people more effectively. This Final term has gone by so passed and the events that we have conducted are the Final Term Pitching and the Lecture Series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last April 30, 2024, WeFetch! had their Final term Pitching at the College of Business and Management building, Employee Lounge. The proponents of this proposed application are the following: Samantha Angelie Alonzo, Raul Gacang Jr., Kristel Jane Francisco, Kiana Palmares, Charimaine Penola, Mark Kenjie Penoso, Christian Lloyd Tonson, and Michael Yotoko. They have discussed the details of their application including how it will work, its fixed rates for every service that will be offered, and details about its value propositions.
The pitcher was Palmares; scriptwriters were Gacang, Tonson, and Yotoko; and the ones who led the making of PowerPoint presentation and the prototype of the application were Francisco, Penola, and Penoso. Alonzo is then assigned to the video production and other details needed for the making of the app. Thus, the workloads of each of the members of the group were equally divided.
Their Final Pitching went much better for them. They are the fifth presenter from their class to pitch their proposed service. The panelists this time listened to their talks. However, the former raised some concerns especially on the rates of the service. They asked if how we are going to manage such big target market with only limited resources and affordable rates. After defending our proposed venture, we have agreed to polish everything if we will opt to continue working on this application. The panelists also made us realized that there will be competitors anywhere, so we must be diligent enough to be better than them.
May 8, 2024. The GEE 16 conducted their Lecture Series at the University Convention Center. There are four speakers who have spoken about the most important things to remember in this field. For instance, they have discussed about what a startup is and how to classify it from others. Moreover, they also highlighted the importance of different aspects that will be relevant in entrepreneurship. Looking forward to more events like this soon because it served as an eye opener for everyone who is and will be working in this field soon.

𝟭𝟮:𝟯𝟲 𝗔𝗠
Sitting quietly in a dimly lit suite, enjoying the soft tunes of RnB classics through a speaker he found while rummaging through Dorian’s belongings, Alonzo patiently waited for the singer’s return from his show.
After receiving an unexpected call from Amara during her stay in Omaha, he was hell bent on getting to the bottom of his daughter’s dilemma. The memory of her tearful voice through the phone crushed him, and knowing she was in Dorian’s care was enough for him to make the trip. She hadn’t told him what exactly happened, but crying to him was a rare occasion. Despite being the baby of the family, Amara was always known to be the strongest when it came to holding in her emotions, and he knew she was pushed to her limit. He didn’t care to attend the show, seeing the man who vowed to take care of his youngest was his only priority. There was no time for informalities.
Dorian arrived to his suite well after midnight. He’d changed into a pair of sweats at the venue before he was driven back to their hotel for the night. He let out a small sigh as he reached his door. It was difficult to be alone with only his thoughts after such a rush of a show. He honestly wasn’t sure what was going on between him and Amara. He figured that it was safe to say that they’d broken up. After his drunken night he wasn’t exactly sure what he said but he knew it was hurtful if she hadn’t bothered to call. But then again, neither had he.
The music hit his ears the moment he stepped foot inside of his suite, guiding his eyes to where it was coming from only to find her father sitting in the dim lighting. “Mr. Bailey?” Part of him began to panic as he wondered if something had happened to Amara. “Is everything okay?”
Alonzo perked up in his seat at the sound of Dorian’s room key gaining access into his suite. The man didn’t speak a word as he waited for his daughter’s lover to enter. The sight of Dorian made him frown; disappointment and anger rising within him once more at the memory of Amara’s voice.
“I dont know, you tell me?” His eyes bored into the other man, dark and serious. “I decided to make a trip down here to see you. I think you and I need to talk about a few things.” Standing from his seated position, Alonzo retrieved a cigar and lighter from his pocket. “When was the last time you spoke to Amara?”
Dorian furrowed his brows in confusion as he stepped further into the space. When the older man spoke of the last time he’d spoken to his daughter it began to make sense. He glanced down at the floor before moving to take a seat opposite of where her father sat. “A week ago.” He answered honestly. “We last spoke a week ago.” He wanted to add that it didn’t end very well but he was sure the man knew that. He bit his tongue to stop himself from asking how she was, he felt he didn’t deserve to know. And it would hurt to hear that she wasn’t doing well as he’d know it would be his fault.
“Hm…” Alonzo chuckled softly with a nod of his head. His fingers fidgetting with his lighter, creating a spark to light his cigar. “A week ago…” He repeated, taking a moment to glance at Dorian before pacing back and forth. “You know I told you before when we first met that my daughter’s happiness and protection was something I don’t play about. Yet I have found out in the past couple of days that you seem to have forgotten that I wasn’t fucking playing…” Alonzo shook his head.
“I don’t normally take unnecessary trips while I’m in the middle of handling business, but when my baby calls me in tears, I have to make some decisions. And that was to come see you.” His index finger raised at the man across from him. “Because she was in your possession. Care to let me in on what that was about?”
Dorian sat back in his seat as he watched the older man begin to pace around the room. He watched him with a hint of curiosity, this wasn’t normally the meeting he’d had with a father before, but his demeanor and attitude felt very familiar, he just couldn’t put his finger on it.
“We had an argument and it didn’t end well, obviously. It was my fault and I take full blame and responsibility. It was never my intention to hurt her, I know that doesn’t change the fact that I did.” Dorian might’ve come off a little too scripted or maybe like he didn’t care, but that wasn’t the truth. He was still trying to figure out the man in front of him.
Pausing for a moment, Alonzo took in Dorian’s words. He didn’t know what was said during the couple’s last exchange of words, but it affected Amara deeply. He silently read him, internally deciding on whether the other man was being sincere. “Y’know when I first met you I was harsh for a reason. Quit frankly I don’t give a damn what family you come from, but with my family we show respect. I let you leave out of that restaurant with my daughter because I trusted you. But now I think you’re a little more like your father than I thought.”
Bringing the cigar to his mouth, he took a pull then exhaled. “A coward, careless, no regard for the feelings of the people he supposedly love. Not once did you ask me how Amara was doing since I’ve mentioned her name.” The corner of his lips curled into a small smirk. Alonzo had always been aware of Dorian’s family. Over the years he became familiar with his father. He knew Dorian wasn’t involved in the business, which was something he appreciated considering his children didn’t know his actual line of work.
Dorian felt himself getting defensive as Alonzo began to speak of his family. But the mention of his father was the missing piece to the puzzle that was the man before him. Dorian stood slowly from his seat, one of his fists clenching but staying by his side. He had been around his kind many of times, of course he’d always felt untouchable but since Cher he’s realized that he wasn’t the golden boy he thought he was so he had to play this right.
“Takes one to know one.” Dorian spoke. “You speak of my father and yet here you are doing just as he did. It’s a bit of the pot calling the kettle black no?” He added. “I didn’t think it was my place to ask about Amara anymore.” He explained and paused for a moment. “She doesn’t know, does she?” Of course, Dorian already knew the answer to that.
“Fortunately for you, I’m nothing like my father so she won’t hear a word of this from me.” Dorian assured him with a nod, his fist unclenching as he stretched out his fingers. “You said you were a busy man so why don’t we just cut to the chase. What do you want from me?” He knew how these things went so he figured he’d cut out the small talk.
Alonzo watched Dorian intently, instinctively calculating his every move, but he didn’t budge from his own stance. He could tell the comment about his father triggered him, and he felt the need to pat himself on the back for being able to rile him up a little. “You’re right I am…” He smiled. “Very busy, but I don’t need much.”
The older man took a step closer with a tilt if his head. “Yes, Amara knows nothing, and she doesn’t know I’m here. After she spoke to me I knew I couldn’t tell her that I was right about you, because she protected you… she wouldn’t tell me that you were the fuckin’ problem. She loves you, and as much I believe that you haven’t proved to be man enough to treat her right, I have to respect her choices. Which also means I can’t do shit to you either.” The strength of Amara’s love for Dorian kept him safe, and that bothered him.
Another billow of smoke surrounded them, as Alonzo exhaled again. “Listen, I don’t give a damn about who you screw or parade to the public as if you are, but if you choose to do that, leave Amara out of it. Because if you embarrass her again, I’ll break her heart for you... I encouraged her to go to Milan this weekend, do with that what you will.”

I want to make a QUICK correction, I spelled H-girl's name wrong in previous post. Hillary* (2 Ls)
After Hillary's gone-wrong-date, she went out to try again. She met a nice man, Alonzo, and he flourished her with compliments and gifts.
Hils made a new (soon-to-be best) friend. Interesting story, they meet through a dating app... Hillary meets Annalise at a lounge/bar (i forget) but they decide to go skating behind the building. They both fell on their tush, but Hils takes the cake* for the most falls.
When the girls leave the rink Annalise makes sure to let Hillary know she only wants to be friends. Hillary didn't like that, she said (and i quote) "If sparks aren't flying, then they're not flying" and walked away.
Ya girl got a dog while I was away... I replaced it with the one you see now, Cookie. The other one (Penny) was Aggressive, stubborn but independent.
After cooling down from being friend-zoned, Hillary called Annalise to apologize and invite her over. Annalise arrived shortly after.
They chatted and created a strong foundation for a healthy friendship. That being: Ana gets along with Cookie.

GRAPHIC BODY CAM FOOTAGE: Louisiana Cops Kill Unarmed Black Man After Neighbor Complains About Noise
Tumblr media
GRAPHIC WARNING: Body cam footage released in officer-involved shooting death of Alonzo Bagley.ODY After receiving the complaint, officer Tyler and his partner arrived at Villa Norte Apartment Complex around 11 p.m. to investigate the call. When the officers encountered Bagley, he allegedly jumped from a balcony, trying to escape on foot. Authorities then say that’s when officer Tyler saw Bagley round the corner of a building. Tyler then fired one shot, hitting the unarmed Black man in the chest. Bagley was given CPR and then taken to a hospital where he later died. Louisiana State Police Superintendent Col. Lamar Davis told the public during a recent press conference that the incident was recorded on police body camera, and will be made public, though his timetable for the release was vague. Davis has asked the public to “remain patient as we continue to conduct a very thorough investigation.” A spokesperson for the family told KSLA, that the incident started when a neighbor called the police because the music was too loud in Bagley’s apartment. He went on to say that Bagley and his wife were both inside the apartment when police came and at some point, Bagley did run from the police before he was shot. The family has also hired attorney Ron Haley, whose clients include the family of Ronald Greene, a Black motorist killed in 2019 by Louisiana state police. “Our office will walk through this process with the Bagley family, to ensure transparency and accountability,” Haley’s firm said in a statement posted on Facebook. Officer Alexander Tyler, who was hired by SPD in May of 2021, has been placed on administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation. According to WBRZ, the FBI and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division have been contacted about the shooting. Alonzo Bagley’s death comes just a month after Tyre Nichols was brutally beaten and killed by Memphis police after he was pulled over at a traffic stop for “reckless driving.” His death as well as Bagley’s have sparked a renewed demand for congress to pass comprehensive police reform legislation. Voyage of the Damned Part 3
Relationships: the Doctor x reader, Astrid x reader (platonic), Astrid x Doctor (platonic)
Summary: Voyage of the Damned rewrite. The Doctor and you find yourselves on the Titanic, space edition. You meet Astrid and get ready for a wonderful day, but then a meteor shower hits the ship and it starts falling towards Earth.
Author's notes: There was a number of things l didn't like about this Christmas special so again, l rewrote it.
Warnings: a ship crashes, multiple mentions of dearth bc a lot of people die, Astrid dies
"It's for the Doctor!" Astrid yelled at Midshipman Frame over the comms. She needed to teleport NOW. "Y/n and him are down on deck thirty-one, alone, against all the Host and Gods know what else and they're doing it for us!" Silence on the other end. "It's time we did something for them," she ended her speech with a finallity.
A moment passed and she feared she'd failed.
But then, "Giving you power," came through the comms.
~
"Only one person could have the power and the money to hide themselves on board like that. And l should know, 'cause..." the Doctor trailed off. You stared at the strange compartment you had found on deck thirty-one.
"My name is Max," a voice finished for him. A strange machine with a head in it came through the smoke.
"Who the hell are you?" it demaned.
"I'm y/n, and this is the Doctor," you pointed at your friend with false cheerfulness, "Hello!" you wiggled your fingers in greeting.
~
"You wreck the ship and the board find their shares halved in value." The Doctor was spelling out Capricorn's plan.
"But that's not enough," you interjected. From what you've learned about them, mad billionares who were losing all their money didn't do things half-way.
"Oh yes,"  the Doctor went on. "'Cause if a Max Capricorn ship hits the Earth, it destroys an entire planet. Outrage back home!" he growled. "Scandal! The buisness is wiped out!"
The billionare's head nodded. "And? The whole board is thrown in jail, for mass murder!" His eyes shone with revenge.
"While you sit here, safe in the- what's it called?" you turned to the Doctor.
"Impact camber," he filled in.
"I have men," Capricorn gloated now, "waiting to retreave me from the ruins. And enough off-world accounts to retire me to the beaches of Enhaxico Two where the ladies, so l'm told, are very fond of... metal."
You were going to puke.
"So that's the plan," the Doctor growled in rage. "A retirement plan. Two thousand people on this ship, six billion underneath us, all of them slaughtered and why? Because Max Capricorn is a loser."
"I never lose," the billionare's head scowled in threat and your voice immediately rang out, mocking, "You can't even sink the Titanic!"
"Oh but l can, pretty girl!" he laughed. "I can cancel the engines, from here!" Red lights and alarms were suddenly flaring everywhere before you could spit in his face.
The Doctor yelled behind you, "You can't do this!"
"Host, hold them!" Caprocorn ordered in turn and began the Gloat 2.0. "Not so clever now, are you? Shame we couldn't work together, you two are rather good. All that banter and yet not a word wasted." The head sighed. "Time for me to... retire."
Ugh, you thought as you furiously tried to get free. That pun alone would be enough to kill a buisness.
"The Titanic is falling, the sky will burn, let the Christmas inferno commence!" Capricorn yelled in victory and called his minions. "Kill them!"
The robots brought up their halos and went for the Doctor's neck.
"NO!" You fought with everything you had but you were late, you'd be too late!
"MISTER CAPRICORN!" a voice you knew cut through your fear.
And it ignited terror. It was Astrid, sitting in a forklift. "I resign," she told the head and drove forward, ful throttle.
"NO!" the Doctor and you screamed, "ASTRID STOP!" "ASTRID DON'T!"
She didn't listen and rammed into the life support system, but its engine was too strong. They were equal and couldn't move each other.
You bit, kicked and screamed, anything to get free.
But then she caught your eyes with hers and everything stopped. There was an eternity in her face. She looked at the Doctor too but you still stared at her.
Then she turned away and stepped on it. The life support lifted and she drove on.
There was no sound. The world was mute as you watched Astrid go over.
You were suddenly at the edge, looking at her disappear into the fire. Someone was screaming. Someone was screaming and you wanted to calm them, help them.
Then you realized it was your own voice.
The world came back into focus. The ship was falling apart and the Doctor was silent at your side. He was staring at the spot where Astrid had disappeared. His face was pale and his eyes blank. You laid your tears aside and took his hand.
"We need to go," you told him, your voice wet with tears. He didn't move.
"Doctor, we need to go,"  you told him again calmly. You thought that was why he looked at you suddenly, and then stood up.
He rewired a Host with lightning speed. It took you each under one arm and off you went.
When you broke through the ceiling of the bridge, you were still in one piece. Arms you had used to shield your head were a bit bloody and you were sure there were at least two splinters in them. You don't look the gift horse in the mouth, even though you would prefer a different Christmas miracle.
"What's your first name?" the Doctor asked the injured Midshipman Frame.
He answered in confusion, "Alonzo."
"You're kidding," the Doctor breathed as a shocked smile spread on his face. You didn't know. You just didn't know anymore. You were drowing in the emptiness inside you but his name was Alonzo.
"Allons-y, Alonzo!" the Doctor yelled and you held on tight. You didn't scream. You didn't even open your mouth. There was nothing anymore.
The Doctor whoohooed when he managed to right the course of the ship and you were just there. Were you there? Astrid wasn't. And that was what mattered in the end.
~
"TELEPORT!" the Doctor yelled and it didn't matter. "Y/N, SHE WAS WEARING A TELEPORT BRACELET!!!"
That woke you up. You ran faster than ever before, to the main deck where the teleport was.
"Brixton, sonic," the Doctor demanded from the billionare and caught it as it was thrown. "Mister Copper, the teleports, have they got an emergency setting??"
"I don't know, they should have?"
"She fell, Mister Copper, she fell!" the Doctor told him while pulling apart the machine like a madman. "What's the emergency code?"
The billionare interjected, "What the hell are you doing?"
"We can bring her back!" you yelled with everything in you.
The historian explained, "If a passenger has an accident on shore leave, their molecules are automatically suspended so they're in stasis, so if you just trigger the shift..."
"THERE!!!" the Doctor screamed and flicked the switch.
And there was your Astrid.
"Falling..." You could hear her voice!
"Only halfway there, come on!" The Doctor wasn't finished with the teleporter.
"I keep falling!" She was scared. Your friend was scared and you wanted nothing but to calm her. You carefully walked up to her and took hold of her hand. It felt like holding warm smoke.
There were tears on your cheeks already, again.
"If l can find the molecule grid, boost the restoration matrix and-" The computer snapped and threw sparks. "NO-NO-NO-NO-NO!!" the Doctor screamed in desparation, "need more phase containment-"
You sobbed, but you knew what was coming. You just looked at your Astrid Pith, into her crystal blue eyes and sushed her. "Hey, hey Astrid, it's alright. It's me, it's y/n, remember? You're alright. l've got you," you promised with a voice as soft as sunlight.
She didn't look as scared as before. Then, so slowly you thought you were imagining it, she looked at you.
"Let her go," you could hear the historian and you sobbed again.
But then Astrid's voice cut through. "Stop me falling?" she asked and you nodded. You found her gaze with yours and promised her, "Anything."
"She's just atoms," you heard Mister Copper from behind you. "An echo with a ghost of consciousness."
"She's stardust," you concluded as your voice broke. "You hear that Astrid?" you asked, still looking into her blue eyes."You're stardust."
She didn't seem to hear, so you did the only thing you could think of.
"There's an old tradition," you told her and softly kissed her cheek. Then you kissed the other, and then her forehead.
"You dreamt of traveling," the Doctor came to stand beside you. You were still sobbing when you pulled away from her and you didn't try to stop. There was no one there you needed to save face for.
"Now you can travel forever," you told her. You knew what the Doctor would do, and your eyes didn't leave hers for a moment.
You heard him soothe her, "You're not falling Astrid."
"You're flying," you both said in one voice.
You watched as she floated away, through the window into the universe.
Then you turned to the Doctor and buried your face in his chest as you both cried.
~
"I transferred all my shares to Max Capricorn's rivals. It's made me rich," the billionare Brixton admitted, disbelieving.
You were empty, and you were tired. That was the only reason why you didn't tear this man limb from limb. Astrid was dead.
"Mister Copper," the Doctor's voice woke you up. "I think, you deserve one of these."
You turned around and saw him holding a teleport bracelet out to the historian. Then, after the latter took it, he slipped one on your wrist. He took your hand and suddenly you were standing in the snow.
~
"But l can have a house, and a garden and-" You couldn't help but smile a little. At least Mister Copper would be alright.
The Doctor yelled after him, "Where are you going?"
"I have no idea!" the man replied in joy.
"Well, we don't either," your alien smiled gently at you and you tried to smile back, you really did. He looked at you, his brown eyes full of sorrow, and pulled you to him. You held onto him tightly as he hugged you.
"But! Y/N!" the historian yelled and you turned in his direction.
"I won't forget her," he promised you. You were tired, so so tired, so you just nodded. "Thank you," you told Mister Copper for her. "We won't either."
"We won't," the Doctor assured you softly, just to be sure.
Then he opened the TARDIS door and stepped into your home after you. You walked up the way and then stood in front of the controls, lost.
The Doctor walked up behind you and decided he would do anything, anything to keep away the blank look in your eyes. He turned to you and pulled you to him again. You let him, your movements sluggish and dazed.
"I've got you," he assured you. "I've got you, y/n. You aren't alone, and you aren't lost. You've got me." And that was enough. You sobbed into his chest, you didn't know for which time today.
But this was different. This was yours, and you clung to the Doctor as everything in you came to the surface.
His tears joined yours. He'd lost Astrid too, and he hated seeing you in pain. He slowly brought both of you down to kneel when you were too tired to stand.
And that was it. That was what you needed and that was what you had. You would be alright. In time, you would be alright.
