For years you had known Yelena, and yet, you still wondered if the woman was entirely human.

Russia’s winters were famous for marking the word “brutal” an understatement, and for the vast majority of the country’s natives, you had to have some level of tolerance to the blistering cold and harsh, snow blowing winds. Yelena, though, she was not just tolerant—she was basically immune.

After numerous missions in several of the coldest regions of the world, you still didn’t understand how she could stand it. And your current mission, which has taken you to northernmost part of Russia, was no exception.

There was a trio of Widows you were after in order to free from Dreykov’s chemical mind control. From early morning to long after sunset, the two of you would search for them with the red anecdote eagerly waiting in your pockets to be used.

For that entire time span, you felt frozen all the way to cores of your bones. The layers upon layers you wore were nearly pointless because they did very little to keep your body heat in. Yelena, on the other hand, had nothing more than your average winter coat over her suit and a knit beanie to hide her blonde hair.

When you returned to the small cabin you were sharing on the outskirts of the town, you changed, before immediately offering to make supper since standing at the stove would offer at least a bit of warmth.

As it began to boil, you held your hands over the water for the pasta, letting the hot steam slowly melt your frozen fingers.

Your moment of a fraction of relief was interrupted when you heard a partially concealed laugh sound from behind you.

“What?”

Yelena’s amused face turned to the fire she was keeping alive in the fireplace. “You look absolutely ridiculous.”

The only pieces of clothing you had removed were your boots, heavy coat, and black suit. Everything else, the short-sleeved shirt, the long-sleeved shirt, the hoodie, the sweater, and the zipper jacket were quickly put back on. It was safe to say if someone were to punch you in the chest or stomach, you wouldn’t feel too much of it.

“I look ridiculous?” you asked accusingly. “It’s an icebox in here, and you’re walking around in a fucking tank top!”

Nonchalantly, she shrugged. “I think it feels fine.”

With a shake of your head, you turned your attention back to cooking, but only after earning another laugh by mumbling, “There’s something very wrong with you.”

After you finished making the simple pasta dish, you nearly ran with the filled plates to sit on the floor in front of the small blaze.

“If you get any closer, (Y/N), you’re going to become the fire,” Yelena warned, her voice practically dripping with humor. “With as much fabric that is on you, it would be nearly impossible for me to put you out. I suppose, at least, you’d be warm then.”

“I’m sorry I have nerves that actually work and allow me to feel our environment,” you replied sarcastically.

After taking an overly large bite, you watched a smirk pull at her mouth. “But, you know, if you weren’t wearing so many clothes, the heat would actually reach you much faster.”

You failed miserably at trying to keep away a smile, and you were certain she had seen the way, even in these circumstances, your face reddened at her words.

This flirting, you guessed it was, began a couple years ago. Ever since you both became free from Dreykov’s control, the number of instances like this had increased exponentially. Nothing ever became of it, though, despite how it always filled your stomach with butterflies and made you grin.

“I think the layers are helping actually,” you told her.

“It’s scientifically proven that they don’t in this situation, but alright.”

Casual, flirting-free conversation was passed back and forth until you both finished your meals.

For awhile, your full, satisfied stomach warded off a bit of the bone aching cold long enough for you to clean up what little there was of a kitchen, as Yelena went outside for more firewood. That happened only after a full couple minutes of arguing with her about her having to wear a coat.

But, by the time you returned to the slowly dwindling fire, your muscles were back to endlessly shivering in a desperate attempt to create even the smallest amount of heat for themselves.

“I can try to fix the stove in the bedroom,” Yelena offered, after tossing more wood into the flames to bring them back to life. “It’s a small enough room that with the door shut, it could nearly become a sauna—to me at least. I would just have to get on the roof to fix its chimney.”

“Oh, no, you don’t need to do that,” you assured her. “I’m fine.”

“What? I couldn’t hear you over your chattering teeth,” she stated dryly. “Between that and your shivering, you’re going to cause an earthquake.”

You tried your best to still your jaw to properly glare at her, but her snickering was enough for you to know you hadn’t succeeded.

In your peripherals, you saw her stand, but you didn’t look to see what she was doing.

Only a handful of seconds passed, before you felt a presence behind you.

“What are you doing?” you asked, as she sat down, leaving you between her stretched out legs.

“Clearly, saving your working, environmentally aware nerves from hypothermia.”

As soon as her muscled arms snaked around your trembling waist and pulled you back against her, you felt her radiating warmth seep through to your icy skin.

“You need to see a doctor. Your body temperature isn’t normal,” you joked.

“If I did, who would keep you from freezing to death?”

The quivering of your jaw had slowed enough for you to steadily reply, “True.”

After a few moments of silence, her chin lowered onto your shoulder, allowing your head to rest against hers. It was just now that you became aware that at some point, you had place your hands over hers, alleviating their numbness.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t mention it,” Yelena said to you. A pause followed, and, somehow, you just knew what was coming. “But, again, you could be significantly warmer, if it weren’t for all of these clothes.”

“Yelena,” you said laughing.

“Why won’t you believe me?! It’s true!” she insisted. “Tomorrow, I’m Googling it and showing you the articles. Even that dumb American movie with the vampires and werewolves mentioned it.”

Despite all clothing remaining in place, a warmth had settled in your chest, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the fire or the sharing of body heat. Solely, it was from this new level of closeness between the two of you—from seeing just how much Yelena wholeheartedly cared about you.
