WHQ TASK 01 - A PIVOTAL MOMENT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What does it mean to go from surviving to living? For Shenandoah, the moment she truly stopped surviving and started living was such an insignificant moment in any real retrospect. It started with her laying in bed, in the early morning hours. Even at twilight, she could feel the Arizona heat starting to seep in. And yet, she hadn't been able to find it in her to kick off the covers and depart her warm bed. She'd asked James to get coffee going, but there'd been no response.
Rolling over in bed, she'd opened her eyes, expecting the four walls of her Phoenix condo, only to be met with concrete. She'd only been part of the prison group for a week at that point, and hadn't finished decorating her cell. She cried, that morning; the first time she had cried since the outbreak began. She couldn't remember if she'd even gotten anything done that day, besides crying two years worth of unshed tears. It was then that she really knew that she wasn't surviving anymore. It's one of her fonder memories since joining the prison.

Chapter Summary: 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 /𝑎𝑑𝑗/ -Backwardness of one kind or another.. This was not where she thought you two would end up.. Every look forward in her hopes and fantasies.. she never thought there would be a day where one of you laid in a hospital room fighting for your life while the other prayed to the old gods and the new by your side..

The hot water raced down the smooth expanse of her pale legs as clouds of steam erupted from the shower head. A thick mist traveled through the bathroom, clinging to the mirror, the walls and presenting just how long the tall blonde had been lost in her thoughts. Her hands were pressed along the shower walls as her head hung in the water, her eyes were closed as she replayed every event that had happened in her mind.
They'd been operating on you and keeping you under close watch for hours. By the time she had gotten to the hospital with Marilyn, you were out of her reach.. She sat, disheveled and defeated with every what if running through her mind for what seemed to be the millionth time that week, with tears staining her face and settling in pools in her hands. There was a point in which she thought the tears would stop coming, that she had cried more than what her body would allow her, but as she was left with her racing thoughts with the bright florescent lights shining on her, they seemed to come again and again, wave after wave of not knowing, of maybe never knowing where you currently stood.
With her, with life, with everything.. She would give anything just to have you in her arms again.
A deep sigh left her lungs as she turned off the water and stepped out of the hot domain, wrapping a towel around her to catch any remaining drops she was unable to shake off. She took a hand to wipe away a clearing on the mirror, a deep frown settling itself on her features as it immediately fogged up again.
She made her way out of the bathroom, immediately being met with the cold air that circled around the empty bedroom. She padded over to her vanity, a sliver of the morning light slipping through the curtains and gracing her with an unwelcome hello. She sat on the cushion and looked deep into her reflection.
Her shoulders sagged and her posture faltered, her eyes wandering from the deep bags under her eyes to the small scratches that littered her face from the long night she was still awake from. Her hand traced along the necklace that held one of your feathers and your matching ring that she planned to hand you once you came to. A weak smile rose to her lips as she remembered the day that you had given it to her.
~~
Your date had run long into the night, the stars scattering the dark sky as small lanterns lit up the area around you two. You successfully were able to hang some from the large tree you found in a clearing by the lake, a large blanket sat atop the grass along the trees base and a small basket with snacks and wine was displayed. You were quite proud of yourself when you walked her to the space and immediately watched as her expression lit up and her shoulders relaxed.
Your legs rested on top of hers as her hands wandered the exposed skin of your thighs. Your dress had hiked up due to the position you both sat in, but it didn't seem like the sapphire beauty was complaining. Your hands rested on her shoulders, one playing with the small hairs that didn't conform to her beautiful updo at the back of her neck while the other toyed with the expensive fabric of her dress.
Your lips danced together, longing and peace filling your beings as all else faded away. Your wings surrounded you two in a warm hold, protecting you both from the chill of the night, and you felt her hands wander up to your back and trace along the base of your wings, a whimper leaving your throat at the contact.
The sound only seemed to spur on her ministrations, her touches becoming more hungry, more bold and firm as she pulled you onto her lap completely before her hands met your wings again. Her fingers moved up and grasped the arch of your wings causing your body to arch forward and a moan to force itself out of your throat as you broke the kiss.
"Riss- you-" another moan broke from you as she continued to toy with you, finding your reactions absolutely delicious. Your body shuddered as another wave of warmth shot to your abdomen. "S-Sen- they're sensitive.."
A good portion of the night continued on like that, retiring to her quarters only to continue where she had left off. One touch was all it took for you to melt into her over and over again.
You laid against her chest as your fingers danced around her smooth skin. You placed a few more kisses along the pale canvas and admired the dark marks that littered it before looking up at her. She looked at you with nothing but love swirling in her eyes and a smile meeting her lips before she opened her arms and beckoned you to come closer.
Her hands rubbed the soft skin of your back, fingers tracing along the scattered feathers before they erupted into wings. You flapped them softly, stretching them out before relaxing them again. A feather had flown off and landed beside you. You smiled at the sight and twirled it between your fingers.
"It is said that an Avian is happy with their partner when they present them with a feather of their own.. When they're comfortable in their own skin.. when they believe their partner brings out the best in them.. It only happens when the mind and soul allow it.." You took one of her hands and placed the feather in it then watched her trace along the fine hairs.
"It feels like its all connected, so I want you to have it.."
The words made her freeze every action, her breath leaving her lungs and her eyes growing wide as they landed on your figure. She took in how nervous you were, how the blush along your cheeks didn't seem to go away, how she felt your heart rate pick up against her skin, how you fiddled with the fabric of the blanket that slightly covered the both of you. "I-If you want it, that is-"
"Yes!" She sat up a bit more and pulled you close after her loud reaction made you jump. She knew the importance of this moment and didn't want her shock to ruin it for you. Being the principal of Nevermore and being a rare type herself made her want to be as knowledgable in other types of outcasts as she could. When you walked into her life, you were no exception. "I-I'm sorry, dove.. Yes- Yes, I would love to take this.."
A wave of relief coursed through you as a smile soon took over your face. Your heart felt full, fuller than it had ever felt before, and it was all due to the build up of this moment alone.
~~
She placed the necklace around her neck as she threw herself one last glance in the mirror, making sure her appearance was just as put together as it always was before she grabbed her bag and walked out her office doors.
She had made it a plan to stay by your side as long as she could. She left to freshen up and wash away the physical traces of last night when Marilyn came back from doing the same. She wanted someone to be there for when you woke up, and, though she wanted it to be her, there was a need to wash away the dirt and grime, give her head a much needed reset.
She walked through the halls, the sound of her heels clicking against the stone floor and bouncing off the walls as she passed through. Every corner she turned, every room she looked into only did an amazing job of reminding her of you.
The balcony that overlooked the quad was where you had asked her to go on your first date, the large arches that framed the hall to the teachers lounge was where she waited for you after your longer days, knowing that you always stopped for a hot tea to pick yourself back up, and the stone stairs that were at the front of the school were where you waited for her after long meetings, saying that it was always a good idea to get up and walk to get a clearer head.
A deep sigh emptied her chest as she walked down the same steps and to the car. Life would be so different without you.. It was only now that she was taking in the weight of everything that you did for her, everything you gave her - every emotion whether good or bad, every night whether long or short, she always knew she would be okay in your company.. always safe in your company..
She rested her head against the steering wheel in defeat, a new wave of tears threatening to fall, the emotion flooding her veins and rippling through her entire being as she allowed herself to be vulnerable for a few moments.
What would the kids think when they heard the news? When they walked into your classroom only to be met with a substitute? How many questions would they ask? How many of them would she have to avoid?
If there was anything the walk from her office taught her, it was that you were a big part of the soul that made up Nevermore.
~~
A loud cheer was heard from the quad as streamers fluttered down from the sky. The sun casted a warm glow along the walls, and a small chill was starting to make itself known as the sun slowly but surely started to fade from the sky. You flew up and hung the last line of fairy lights, slowly making your way down and smiling when you felt warm hands meet your hips. You turned your head slightly to look at the blonde behind you, a laugh leaving your lips as you turned around in her hold and pulled her close.
It was the first day of fall - something celebrated in the small town as the fall festival and Outreach Day followed close behind. The change of a new season was significant to many outcast cultures, and she took in your beautiful smile as she knew it was important to you as well.
You grabbed her hand and wandered off to the side, leaning against the wall to look over the happy smiles of the students around you. A small party was something you thought of doing when you witnessed a celebration during one of your travels. It was met with nothing but praise and additions when you asked for help from your fellow co-workers.
She soaked in your expression - pride and love radiating from you at the outcome of a successful launch. She always wished for someone to love this school as much as she did - she grew up here, learned to welcome and be herself here, went through heartbreak and built herself back up again. She was a part of the soul of this school.. and, as she looked at you by her side, with a sparkle in your eyes, with your hand in hers.. she knew that you would become a big part of it too…
~~
She settled into the seat next to Marilyn after she entered the bright room. The redheads hands meeting her own in a gentle hold, pulling her complete attention to her. "You need rest.."
"I don't- I can't-"
"Here.." She took the items off of the blondes lap and placed them in the empty seat beside her. She took her coat and draped it over her then urged her to rest her head on her shoulder. "I know you won't leave since she's here, so come on.."
"Mari-"
"Larissa."
There was no point in fighting back against the red head - once she set her mind towards something, there was little to no room to make her back down. "She'd want you to rest.."
That sentence alone was enough to take away the rest of her resolve as her mask slipped and revealed just how tired she had become. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding as she allowed herself to slouch in her seat, shuffling to one side of it as her head lowered onto her friends shoulder.
She laughed slightly, knowing that the slight of the two women next to each other in the room like this would look nothing less than comical. The small rumble of the woman settled Marilyn's nerves just a bit, pressing into the thought that they would be okay, that you two would be okay..
Larissa let her eyes flutter shut, soaking in the comforting warmth that emitted from her friend as sleep and exhaustion took her in their hold.
~~
The spring breeze carried the smell of grass with it, swirling around her in the large field she found herself in. The sun was bright as it sat at its peak in the blue sky. She brought a hand up to block out the beams of light, her head shooting to her right as a loud scream and wild giggles filled her ears.
"I'm gonna get ya!! I'm getting closer!! RAH!" A loud squeal shot into the air as she watched you pick up a small girl and tickle her in your arms. The giggling only got closer as you slowly made your way to where she stood. "My little dove, you are getting faster and faster as the days move forward."
You planted a kiss on the small child's head, moving your hands to under her arms as your lifted her into the air. Larissa took in the girls looks, her hair was dark like yours, but her eyes shined a bright, excited blue. The small wings that shot out from her back were a mix of the dark color of your own and a bright white that matched her hair.
You handed the girl off to Larissa and she happily took her, going along with the little game you two were playing and making the small girl squirm. You gave out a long whistle before looking up at the sky. "Lets have lunch!!"
A taller, though still young, boy shot down from the sky, expertly shifting into his human form as he landed. His hair was the light blonde like hers, nearing almost silver in the bright light but his eyes were dark like yours. He ran up to you both, pressing his head onto your stomach as you rubbed soothing circles along his back with every breath he took. He looked up at you as he gripped the sides of your pant legs. "When is she gonna be able to fly? I wanna show her what it looks like up there.."
"Soon enough, little one.. She's still growing and has to wait for her wings. But when she gets thereeeee," you lifted the boy into your arms, reflecting the way Larissa held your little girl, "she'll have a master teacher at her disposal. Just like you did."
You threw Larissa a look of admiration as you stood at her side, loving that you had kids with both of your abilities. The image before her looked absolutely perfect.. The sun hit all the right places as it traced along all of your skin, your hair, meeting the smiles along all of your faces and kissing you all hello - blessing you all with the presence of a goddess, gracing her with a family…
You walked hand in hand with two bundles of joy growing increasingly tired in your arms. All was well until a large, dark shadow overcasted all of you. You were the first to turn around, only to face the same Demonic Avian that attacked you so many years ago..
"Take care of your sister, okay? You protect her, and mama will protect you both, okay? Be good." You handed the boy over to Larissa and watched her eyes dart back and forth between you and the large entity. Her guard was up, that much was clear, but you could tell her mind had flashed back to the night many years ago.
She watched as you, once again, put yourself between her and the other Avian, your large wings acting as a wall to keep the distance and give them protection. The sky had grown dark, clouds getting rid of the large shadow and swallowing the entire valley in a cool grey. "Larissa, you need to go. Take the kids and go, please.."
"Y/N, I can't just-"
"Riss- please.." You looked back at her as tears filled your eyes, desperation filling your being as you pleaded for her to get to safety. "I love you - I'll be okay, I promise."
The words echoed in Larissa's head, like a line of hope, like gas to a flame, like the push she needed to protect what she had.
I'll be okay I promise I promise I'll be okay I'll be okay I'll be okay I promise I promise I promise I-
"Go!"
~~
"We've got a fighter!" She awoke with a start, jumping out of her skin and successfully waking Marilyn who rested beside her. The two blinked rapidly while sitting up in their chairs, looking for the source of the booming voice that entered the room. "She's in recovery.. We're gonna keep monitoring her, so we're keeping her here until we determine she's well enough to leave."
She stood from her spot, walking up closer to the doctor as she played with her fingers. Her voice wavered as she urged herself to ask the question that's been plaguing her mind. "How.. How is she..?"
"She lost a lot of blood.. If I'm being honest, it's a miracle that she's still with us. It seems like she's just not done here quite yet, though. If you two want to come with me.." Marilyn stood and grabbed everything, rushing to her side at the doctors words. "I know about the situation from the reports, so I think she'll be glad to see you two when she wakes up."
He gestured you both into the room, saying to make yourselves comfortable before leaving. Larissa was the first to walk in, but froze as her eyes landed on your form.
You were cleaned up, any traces of blood being washed away. Your wings covered each side of you, the white feathers that grew from your scars heavily contrasting the rest of the darkness that encompassed you. You still looked pale, but the fact got overshadowed by the bandages covering a good section of your right cheek. The sight made her heart hurt, and she could only imagine what else littered your body, what else would scar over.. exactly how much pain you were in..
She walked closer and softly ran her knuckles along your unharmed cheek, a few tears slipping from her eyes as the sound from the heart monitor filled the room. Did everything lead up to this moment? Was there a universe in which neither of you got hurt?
The seriousness of her mistake settled in her chest again. If only she had listened to you, if only she didn't shut you out, if only-
"She'll be okay." The kind voice from behind her broke her trance and brought her attention back. She tucked a hair behind your hear before sitting down beside the botanist.
"I know.. It's like she told me.." Her eyes never left your unmoving form, her mind wandering back to the dream she had moments ago. Though she hoped the end of it never happened, she'd do anything to get to the happiness that her dream depicted.
She'd wait for you for how ever long it took.
So she did.
~~
Days had passed and you hadn't woken up. She was surprised at how long you had been out for, it seemed you were sleeping soundly as a restful expression formed on your face earlier this morning, but she knew how extreme your condition was and went back to her work.
Every so often she would look up from her laptop screen and peer over the rims of her glasses, looking at any changes in your appearance. She was glad that your skin had gained more of it's color a couple days ago - you were looking much better, overall.
As she was carefully looking at your every detail, you started to move - your legs circling in the white sheets as an uncomfortable expression made itself known along your features. You slowly brought a hand up, the weakness in your body showing itself off, and touched the bandages that were on your cheek, letting out a low, broken groan.
Her breathing stilled in her chest and all her movements froze, making the room quiet except for the machines. She watched you struggle to sit up, doing so slowly but surely. You looked around the room while rubbing your throat, your eyes stopping on Larissa as an extremely worried expression rose to your face.
"Let- I.." She sat up straight, putting her laptop down and moving her glasses to rest on her head. She cut you off before you were able to speak and stood before any questions left your mouth. "Let me grab you some water."
She quickly left the room and grabbed the closest nurse, explaining that you had woken up and probably needed to get some sort of attention. She nodded and went to fetch your doctor.
Larissa's heart felt as though it was going to pound out of her chest. Her breathing was slightly labored, and her vision was noticeably wavering. She leaned against the closest wall, forcing her emotions to settle and get a hold of themselves.
~~
She was allowed back in after they asked you some questions and wrote down some notes for your records. Larissa walked in but froze in the doorway. She took a moment to admire you as your gaze was distracted out the window.
The cool toned light from the early morning sky filtered in through the glass window, shining against your skin as though you were an angel. A flock of birds flew by above the tree tops, the small group of nature making a wide smile grow on your face. It melted her heart.
She stepped in more to catch your attention, your gaze slowly moving to hers. She settled into a seat close to you and you studied her expression with a concerned tone on your face.
"I-"
"Y/n, I'm so.. so sorry.." It was like that one sentence was enough to spur her on and say everything she had been feeling since the night she forced you out of her office. "You shouldn't have gone through that.. no one deserves to go through that.. When I saw you after the Avian.. when you were laying on the floor… I messed up, Y/n.. I'm so sorry, and I promise to make it up to you every day I-"
"I'm sorry.." Your voice was weak as you looked at her form. Tears left her eyes with no filter, her eyes landed on yours as she tried to read what was sitting behind them. Her shoulders were slumped, and her hands rested in her lap as she played with her fingers, played with the ring you made for her. She looked confused, and a heavy feeling sat in her throat as to what you could be sorry for. You were here because of her..
"No.." She shook her head while speaking, her eyes moving back to yours to put more weight in her words. She moved one of her hands and grabbed one of yours gently, rubbing her thumb against your knuckles. "It's okay.. There's nothing to be sorry for, my love.."
Her words and actions heavily confused you. Everything that had happened?
"No- no.. I.. I'm sorry, I.." You started, avoiding her gaze as you looked around the room, unsure if you should bring your thoughts to light. Your eyes wandered along her things, seeing the files and papers littered across the bench by the window. You looked over her again, seeing one of your feathers around her neck, causing you to lift your other hand up to grab the matching one around your own.
She looked so.. full of worry.. full of so much care towards you.. It made you wonder how she was holding up, how long she had waited by your side, how long she begged for you to wake up.. You decided to speak, not wanting to hold the truth from the beauty beside you.
"Who.. are you?"

SHENANDOAH BRIGGS is here. Turns out the 48 year-old used to be a model, but now they contribute as a SEAMSTRESS. Better watch it — they’re known to be both elegant and prim. They’ve been around for three years, but we’ll keep an eye on them just in case. They remind me of high fashion ripped to shreds, glass crunching beneath stiletto heels, droplets of blood on a marble floor anyway.
STATS
Name: Shenandoah Briggs nee Bohannon Nicknames: Shan, Doe Birth Date: May 11 Age: 48 Height: 5'9" Weight: 182 lbs Gender/Pronouns: cis woman | she&her Romantic/Sexual Orientation: demisexual | biromantic Hair Color: brown Eye Color: green Marital Status: Widow
BACKGROUND
Shenandoah Briggs grew up in a dying town in the Appalachian mountains as Shenandoah Bohannon. All her life, her one goal was to break into the fashion industry, and make enough money to get as many family members out of that dying town as possible. A goal that she fought to achieve upon graduating from high school.
Attending Barbizon School of Modeling & Acting, Shenandoah near ground herself to nothing in order to both survive her rigorous schedule but also pay for her own tuition. She connected with quite a few talent scouts and agencies during her time at Barbizon, and landed her first gig two months after graduating.
Her star power increased as time went on, as she finally began to obtain her goal of getting her family out of her dying hometown. It was at one of the many shows she was working that she initially met her future husband, James, who had been working security. What started as friendship slowly bloomed into more, with the two marrying and buying residences in multiple states.
They were in Phoenix for one of Shenandoah's gigs when the outbreak swept through. James died that very same day, and Shenandoah was lucky enough to survive the encounter that claimed his life. For two years, she fought and survived, at some point joining a small group of survivors. Only a few stragglers, herself included, were alive when they found the prison.
Though her skills weren't as honed as a professional, Shenandoah elected to contribute to the group as a seamstress. Her main point in choosing that was that it would be more sustainable to the group to try and preserve the clothing they had, rather than have the scavengers constantly hunting for more. It's been a role that she's somewhat proud to have.
