HEADCANONS BELOW:
-Sain is the biological son of General Eagler. Caelin is small, so how likely is it that two green-haired knights one generation apart would take an interest in the same order? Eagler’s reaction to Sain turning his lance against him also reads as more surprised than Kent’s sword, and his final quote, “I think it’s time to test the bounds of your loyalty!” is the final test he leaves for Sain as his father and general. Facing his own blood in battle strengthens the oath he swears to the late marquess and later Lyn, by way of going to show just how far Sain is willing to go for the sake of his liege.
-His relationship with his father was not an amiable one. Eagler was a general before he was a dad to Sain, and so he sought to find love elsewhere. Enter a few sleazy knights who proclaimed “it is a cavalier’s job to fall for beautiful women,” and you have the perfect recipe for his lousy behavior. With a dad who only cared for Sain’s martial training, he was left to internalize for himself what he saw in the less honorable side of Caelin’s knights, and grew up with the belief that skirt-chasing was just the part of the job Kent never understood.
-His bisexuality is repressed as a result. He has it in him to enjoy the company of men just the same as that of women, but the heteronormative lessons he was taught did not condone that sort of thing. That isn’t to say he can’t break past that idea, though. It will just take considerable effort from him and those who care about him.
-His feelings for Lyn are the first real one he ever develops, but Sain is no fool. He knows she wouldn’t ever get with a man like him, so rather than trying to chase her he urges Kent to do instead, while distracting himself with the rest of the women in the army. His decision to leave her side following his unpaired ending is a poor attempt at burying those feelings--Sain having believed that he could simply run away once everything was said and done and that they’d just disappear.
-His decision to come to Garreg Mach is the realization that genuine love is not so easy a thing to shake. It also stems from the fact that as he matures he begins to understand that sweet nothings from the citizenry cannot replace the feeling of his friends who truly care for him, though Sain himself sees this as simply a lack of passion. He hopes to bring that fire back with the others at the academy.
-Deriving from his death quote, he has a fondness for flowers and a hobby of gardening. The Greenhouse will easily be his favorite spot to chat up the ladies.
-He only writes in colored ink. Black ink lacks passion and flair, which goes oh so poorly with his poetic writing.
-Horse meta coming to a post near you! I’ll get there someday I just need to Think about this one
-And finally, Sain secretly enjoys making dolls and toys for little kids. He likes to hand them out when he rides into town after a mission, which contributes to the way he is generally beloved by the citizenry

little things i like as i was testing rody’s voice earlier: though kent and roderick are very similar ( cavs that act as the stern, stoic foil + friend to a skirtchasing fellow cav ) but there is a slight difference in how they speak. they are both still severe with their coworkers, but kent cares much more for maintaining propriety and his knightly image ( given that he is a knight commander ) whilst roderick is much more relaxed about being himself and thus can be much more blunt and open with more people. whilst they might theoretically be able to get along with their strong overlaps, roderick might actually put kent off or startle him at first in a conversation with his lack of restraint.

kent is a stickler for order but is a hot mess when it comes to dealing with affection, so it makes sense that when it comes to his wedding, he’d be quite stressed in trying to make it all come together but being pretty bad at actually planning it. whoever his partner is will have to communicate with him and while he wouldn’t want to burden them with any part of the planning as a way to offer kindness to them, he won’t be able to deny how much better the event becomes once he’s actually getting feedback and help from the other person.
he’s also the type of man who believes he must get married to someone if he were to ever get romantically involved with them because that’s in his mind the honorable thing to do, he’ll be just as adamant about not being wed if his partner happens to be someone of a noble or royal bearinng. though he’s a knight captain of high esteem, he would feel wrong being such a person’s official partner and while being their paramour feels wrong for his position as well, he would much rather be a private lover forever than be their husband out of worry for their reputation. would he want to get married? yes. but his mind would reason that he shouldn’t. it’d take his partner making it clear that they want to make him their lawfully wedded husband to get him to reconsider.

now with the inclusion of sigrun and tanith joining the bridal banner to follow after their liege, i 100% crave kent and sain dressing up as grooms to follow after lyn. incredibly niche desire : resident, me....
i imagine he’d need a lot of help from sain on the idea of marriage and would look to him as a counsel ( the ONE time you get this sain. the one time. ) considering it is sain who helps him understand the budding feelings of romance to begin with. kent’s a total novice to love, and, loathe as he is to admit it, sain truly bests him for once in this field. when’s the right time to get married? what’s the difference between dating and being married? he’ll roll his eyes at whatever answer he gets, but in the end he trusts sain on this more than anyone
in the end, though he needs sain’s help, kent’s the one that can get a bit overzealous eventually in his own passions. he’s hesitant to admit his own tendency to get lovesick quite easily, something he thought wouldn’t be true only to realize he was just a late bloomer to the field. he’s the type to go through marriage magazines and pamphlets in modern verse, the type to take any and all advice sternly and try to determine how best to apply it. he’s kinda... a wreck, but he’s trying.

Fandom/Pairing: Fire Emblem - kent/lyn (sorta)
Summary: "Kent! Have you been hiding from me out here? I thought surely some beast had swallowed you whole or some evil foe had wiped you from this mortal plane!"
Notes: Just a short scene with Kent and Sain done as a writing warm-up. Dunno when it takes place. *vague gestures* Sometime.
"Oh sweet merciful Saint Elimine, save me from this sudden affliction! For I have been struck by a fever of love! I-- I believe it happened the moment my eyes fell upon your resplendent figure, my Lady! Tell me, my beatific angel, what do they call you?"
The young green-eyed woman regarded Sain with a very sour expression.
"Please leave me be."
"Alas-- if only it was so simple! But my sweet darling, I fear I shall never banish the sight of you from my mind, or my heart! You simply must grace me with the knowledge of your name--"
"She said to leave her be," a gruff voice answered, a man suddenly stepping from the crows beside the woman. Sain sized the man up, frosty eyes, crossed arms, wicked scar crawling up one bicep.
"My good sir, I meant no harm, I was only asking this lovely creature for her name--"
"Perhaps you'd first like to know my husband's name. This is Gerald."
Gerald glared daggers. Sain straightened up,
"Uulp! Ah, haha, husband! I-- I-- Gerald, well met! Um-- excuse me, I just recalled I have a prior engagement I must attend! Farewell!"
He squeaked and leapt quickly to one side of the crows of milling villagers and  bounded away like a jackrabbit with a fox on its tail.
It was an intensely pleasant day in the small, charming Khathelet village, a spring rain having recently broken out into sunshine, the world smelling bright and crisp of flowers and petrichor. A bustling market day was taking place in the town's courtyard, the roads lined with vendors hawking wares of every shape, color and description. Crowds of people meandered about from not only the village itself but from several neighboring villages as well. Much of Eliwood's company had stopped to rest on their journey, expecting word back from the local Marquess in three day's time about some potential military aide. As it had followed a particularly long and grueling march, the brief respite was greatly welcomed among Eliwood's crew; most were either resting or enjoying the festive feel of the marketplace.
Of course, some were enjoying themselves more than others. Sain was having an especially difficult time that day. It seemed the local women were very prickly and unwelcoming to his magnanimous offers for company. It absolutely mystified him why that would be, but a Caelin knight was nothing if not persistent. He would simply need to keep trying. Although . . . it would probably do him well to be more mindful of lurking Geralds and the likes.
Yes. It would be prudent to have backup. Not that Sain needed help getting out of trouble! But . . . well, he'd already been slapped several times today and nearly roughed up by a few fellows, and Sain was sort of missing Kent's assistance. The other knight could be quite a stick in the mud, but he had a knack for spotting bad situations and Sain often relied upon the man's keen observational skills and excellent judge of character.
Kent had vanished into the crowds some time ago, when Sain lost track of him while an especially beautiful redhead had walked by. He really hadn't seen hide nor hair of him since, and that was a few hours ago by now. It took a lengthy search, but at long last, Sain prevailed. He spied the bright orange hair from the tall knight over the many heads of the crowds and worked his way over, finding his friend standing at a vendor's booth near the outer edge of the plaza.
"Kent! Have you been hiding from me out here? I thought surely some beast had swallowed you whole or some evil foe had wiped you from this mortal plane!"
Kent hummed a mild acknowledgement of Sain's existence but said no more than that. The knight was gazing contemplatively at a series of handsome bottles, corked and sealed in wax and wrapped in ornate fabric. His expression seemed to suggest this was the most grave decision he had to make of his life. But then again, Kent was always excessively serious about everything.
"Kent. Hello? You're going to strain yourself thinking that hard about a simple purchase."
The man blinked and seemed to shake himself from his daze, fully noticing Sain for the first time.
"Ah, Sain. I apologize. I was . . . merely pondering the quality of the vintage."
Sain picked up one of the bottles, which contained a deep red liquid.
"Bulgarian Spiced Wine? I thought you said you didn't care for spiced wines."
"I don't particularly. It, ah, it isn't for myself."
"Right, of course. Running errands for someone?"
Kent looked slightly embarrassed.
"No, I . . . it was just a thought that struck me. We needn't spend further time upon it, I am ready to depart."
"Wait, wait," Sain said, turning the bottle in his hand as he examined it,
"It's a gift then? Who's it for?" Sain grinned, "Somebody special, perhaps? A lucky girl who's won your affections? Oh!-- Is it Lady Lyndis?"
"Sain," Kent hissed tensely.
"It is, isn't it?"
The taller man clenched his jaw and replied,
"Certainly not in the uncouth manner you imply. I-- I simply-- Lady Lyndis has spoken often to me about how she misses her homeland of Sacae-- the sights, the smells, the tastes. These imports from Bulgar could not help but catch my eye. I thought perhaps she might appreciate a small piece of her homeland, however trivial it may be."
"Kent, that's a brilliant idea."
"It is a terrible idea."
Sain gestured with exasperation,
"Why?!"
The troubled knight looked at the vendor's booth with uncertainty.
"I fear others shall make the same mistaken assumptions you made just now. My intentions are nothing but pure, and yet . . . it would seem improper, would it not?"
Sain scoffed,
"If a vassal cannot give their honored liege a token of gratitude, I do not know what kind of world we live in."
Kent considered this.
"You are right, Sain. However, I must still take the perceptions of others into account--"
"Hey," a voice interrupted. A short, stout man on the other side of the vending booth had shuffled over.
"Are you going to buy something or what? You've been standing there half near forever and blocking the way for potential customers."
"I apologize, sir, we'll be on our way--"
"--yes! Yes, he will be buying this right here, good sir!" Sain said, waving the bottle of spiced wine about.
"Sain--"
"An excellent choice," the vendor beamed,
"The finest vintage from Bulgar yet. I have sampled it myself, and I promise you I know my wines."
"There, you see, Kent? The man knows his wines and says it to be the finest."
"With respect, I am sure that is true, but unfortunately I still cannot--"
"How much for it?"
"It'll be 20 gold pieces."
"Here you go," Sain said cheerfully, deftly snatching up the little cloth bag of coins from Kent's side and tossing them over to the vendor. Kent's eyes widened.
"Sain, you can't make purchases with my own gold without my consent--"
"If there's any extra, you can keep the change, my good man. Thank you so very kindly!"
"No, thank you! Blessings upon you both!"
"Same to you!" Sain called, pushing his protesting friend away from the booth and back out into the crowds.
"Sain, I had about 30 gold pieces in excess of that price," Kent grumbled.
"Oh, uh . . . heh. Whoops. Well, uh, at least you have this now!" Sain said, thrusting the bottle into Kent's hands.
"Yes," Kent said in a grim tone,
"But is that fact good fortune or folly?"
"You worry far too much, my friend," Sain said, putting an arm about his shoulder.
"I'm certain Lady Lyndis will love it. Trust your old buddy Sain."
Somehow this comment only served to set Kent more ill at ease.

@moongradvius sent:  The little Pegasus Knight fiddled with one of her twintails, waiting nervously until the red-armoured knight would finish washing his horse so she could use the spring to give Huey a bath. They didn't get chances like this often while travelling as hard as they were, but she didn't dare take up any space he might need- "Eek!" She fell forward, boots splashing in the shallow water to catch herself, when her mount nudged her waist with his nose- surely catching Sir Kent's attention.
❛ i shall only be a moment, florina. ❜  so he plans to be, hastening his grooming of his steed when he sees the shy flier nearby. however, it seems like fate is testing his precise choice of words because the moment he looks away, he hears her yelp and the sound of splashing water, and at that he rushes to catch her and stop her fall.
her momentum and the distance forcing him into an unsteady position does more harm than good, and the two of them end up splashing against the water anyway. at the very least, florina was spared by falling atop him, him taking the brunt of it. the collision against the rocks against his head and back hurt, but it was the knightly thing to do, wasn't it?
still, a low groan of pain escapes kent as he tries to right himself, hand going to the back of his head to feel for anything. his fingers meet blood, and he knows he will feel lightheaded soon — damn it. for now, he keeps his palm pressed against it, at least until he can get proper aid.
Tumblr media
❛ the rocks here are quite uneven. careful, ❜  he warns.  ❛ i apologize for getting in your personal space. i thought to help your balance, but... i know you are uncomfortable in such proximity. can you get up on your own?  ❜

@of-invisible-ties sent:  "Kent, my boon companion! The truest paragon of knightly vows and chivalry!" There's a reason Sain's pouring on the compliments. It's to brace for some bad news. "And my most gracious of friends, my most trusted confidant!" Translation: I reaallllly don't want to tell you how I messed up this time. "Could I beg but an ounce of your time and ... pity? I, erm, ah ... I ... I lost my --" He whispers it in a small, fearful voice: "--My sword. And saddle. Which had my provisions in it."
kent raises an eyebrow once the third sentence begins. while he would call his comrade a bit superfluous, he had almost never thought it a trait the other cavalier used when directed at him of all people. a woman? yes. but just him? something was surely up about this.
and so kent’s suspicions come true as the other man flounders more before slipping his confession in.
Tumblr media
“ sain! how many times must i tell you to keep a better check on your provisions?! ”  he knows he’s shouting now and drawing on the looks of others in camp, but so be it. the public humiliation might actually motivate sain to learn from his old mistakes if kent turned out to be lucky after this.  “ i cannot believe you. i do not even know how you managed to misplace your horse’s saddle— your saddle of all things! sain, we do not have infinite funds to spend on you and your blunders, you — you — you absolute bloody fool! ”
kent unhooks the sword from his belt, sheath and all, and throws it at his friend as he punctuates his last sentence. he feels the heavy crease form between his brows and sighs, though such an exhalation hardly quells his ire.
“ either ride without your saddle or do not ride at all. if you fall off your horse in this next battle, that is YOUR fault and no one else’s. are we clear? ”

“ too happy indeed... ”  he sees that grin and that is all kent needs in order to know he's going to hear a story that is yet another spin on the same ones he's heard countless times before. the only difference is that this time sain comes with what seemed like an actual practical net gain.
“ well, i'll say i am impressed you got this. ...unless i am to take this to mean you bought a lance to try and win HER heart. ”  please saint elimine above, make it so that sain had not wasted his own pocket money when he still has another lance left in kent's own belongings.  “ if anything, i am curious to know why you do this so often. do you have no intention of ever settling down? ”

“ ...so you are. ”  what else was there to say? if that is what lord eliwood and the tactician have decreed, who was kent to disagree? the tactician had a good head on their soldiers, and lord eliwood had a good heart. that much had been proven when the marquess' son had rescued a woman he didn't even know from pursuers.
eliwood pardoning ephidel was just another example of that heart of his — one much more generous than kent's own.
“ i suppose you are coming up to me saying this since you believe there are those in this army who do not trust you. ”  himself included, but he leaves that out.  “ they will continue to harbor those feelings of doubt until they see proof of your changed loyalties. know that i will cooperate with you for the sake of this army, but if you ever pose a threat to lady lyndis, i will intervene as i see fit. ”

@emblemforged sent: Ry casually leans forward patting Kent and Clive on the head, smiling wistfully before walking away nonchalantly.
Tumblr media
“ hm? ”  the valentian knight's eyes widen a fraction, the summoner's hand lightly tousling his blond locks. ry certainly didn't seem that much older than him if at all yet here they were here, together like one were some cute child to dote on. neither did the man he had been engrossed in conversation with either — kent, he believed the red-head’s name was.
the summoner does not reveal much, something that clive decided quickly not to pry on. he supposes the man must compensate for that lack of verbal speech with expressing opinions via touch. a smile could be polite, but... a head pat was pretty specific.
a flash of something melancholic and then the summoner is off. another glance towards the man of caelin who somehow seems even more lost than him. kent’s brow furrows, mouth flapping open yet cursed to be voiceless.
ah, good heavens, he supposes he ought to be the one to pick up on this then.  “ wait! ”  clive calls, surprising the man in red beside him.
Tumblr media
“ ry. let's have a drink sometime — the three of us. i know not what ails you, but there's little better than that between comrades in arms, wouldn’t you say? ”
Tumblr media
kent falters at first, a bit flabbergasted, but as he looks down at himself, he seems to have worked through the invitation before deciding,  “ i... suppose i would not be opposed to it if you wish it. ”

@fatedsummoner sent: “You’re my friend. You didn’t know that?” for Clive or Kent  //  emotional starters.
Tumblr media
“ we are? ”  ah, blast it, that might come off as offensive. kent quickly tries to move back to repair whatever damage he might have caused.  “ apologies. i'm not very used to navigating my bonds with other people. i usually need the other person to spell it out for me... rest assured, i have been reprimanded about it on numerous occasions. ”
was it too much to explain himself? while it seemed the most logical course of action, a nagging voice in his head reminded him that kiran was his superior currently.
but... if kiran truly wished to be his friend, then certainly he should be allowed to say this much without it being thought of as overstepping his bounds.
“ i was made a knight commander in my homeland when i was twenty-two. i was the youngest knight commander in all of lycia's history, but that rank was gained through devotion to my studies and my training. as soon as i was able to, i loaned treatises on war and trained with a blade. my dedication left me little time to focus on my relationships... if anything, i worried getting too friendly with others would distract one from being able to do their job efficiently. hence why i stand here now, before you like this. ”
he knows now that is not true. people fought much better when they had someone to protect— something valuable on the line.
he just wishes he hadn't learnt it too late.
Tumblr media
“ i'm afraid i'm a much better knight than a friend, but if you will have me, i do not think i would mind being friends with you. i just... hope you won't mind me in return. i am rather new to this whole... bonding thing. ”

three houses starters | always acc.
Tumblr media
“ but of course. my blade will always be with you, lady lyndis, ”  kent declares easily. that is what a model knight would say. he will die for his country; he will die for his liege lord.
but… he has neither now. he was branded a traitor to caelin. lyndis was branded an imposter to her house. he is no longer a knight, and she is no longer his liege. sain and him are ostensibly free, so long as one’s definition of freedom be bound solely to whether one is sworn to duty actively or not.
the smart choice after lord lundgren’s victory would have been to go to ilia. the mercenary life is a more stable refuge in a land with no proper rulers and equipped only with a desperation to make money and live. the men there are all cavaliers; sain and he would blend right in.
but lady lyndis strives to move southeast to bern, and he makes the decision all on his own:  “ wherever you go, i will follow. leave any concerns you have of our route to me. ”

             @of-invisible-ties ( sain ) / unprompted.
“ Ah. There you are— ” When Kent accosts Sain in the nearby town square, his tone is equal parts relieved and severe. Night had fallen upon them and Lyndis’s Legion had taken refuge in a common inn for the evening, but the knight finds himself up and searching for his partner in arms instead of resting. Caelin is only a few days away, and they wait idly for news of the various Lycian nobles’ replies to Eliwood’s plea for them to all remain neutral in the succession dispute.
Tumblr media
“ I had wondered where you could have gotten to when I noticed your bed empty. ” Not that he has much of an answer presently; it could range anywhere from intending to visit a tavern to going on a nightly stroll. Kent sighs. “ Sain, it’s too dangerous for us to be out carousing. Do remember we are presently branded traitors to our oath. ”

NOW THAT I’VE FINISHED FE6.... update to kent’s post-game verse since i feel like i understand the worldbuilding of elibe a bit better at this point? spoilers for both fe7 and fe6 here as a warning in case anyone minds those
assuming kent ends fe7 unmarried, he will become a steward for ostia due to lyn giving control of caelin to hector. kent’s devotion has always been to caelin ever since he was knighted, and so if caelin is now under ostia, then his loyalty transfers to that as well.
however his interactions with wallace during the events of blazing blade has made it so that kent’s focus has shifted; he is led to believe that he should be less invested in caelin itself but rather more invested in his liege. wallace advises him to avoid blind obedience and to instead keep an honest love for one’s liege so that the actions he carries out as a knight are not merely to follow orders but rather for the good of the lord and the land.
this becomes problematic for kent post-game, at least in my portrayal, because he has come to terms with the idea that he thinks of his duties for lyn and her grandfather. this becomes even more difficult when you factor in his personal affections for lyn. to have her leave and then be told his allegiance would logically be with hector now... his head understands it, but his heart is hesitant. however, kent has always been heralded as holding a level-mind, and so he follows that instead.
kent is left feeling purposeless but still performs his duties efficiently and well even if there is a lack of vitality to him now that he has become a servant for ostia. he assumes a role of chatelain which means i’m going to headcanon now that he remains behind at the castle while hector is off at araphen. he remains there even after hector’s fall and the bubbling revolt; though he may feel uncertain about his place in life now, he does not betray ostia for bern. he stays behind intending to hold the fort and protect lilina though for plot reasons would be unsuccessful. whether this means kent dies mid-fe6 or not i will leave undecided for now.
