"Your parents are gone, Peter."

Peter woke up with a jolt, a painful headache spreading all over his head as the others become restless in their innerworld. He felt around his bed, feeling for an inch of you, and whimpered in distress when you weren't next to him.

The light from outside was blinding, making Peter stumble out of the bed with his eyes closed. He needed you, and he wasn't going to stop—

"Uncle Ben!"

Spider stepped out of the flash of light from the window, walking closer and closer to the walls until Spider could lean against it. There were noises coming from the kitchen; Louder and louder the pots would bang against each other, echoing through the walls like—

BANG

The clanging stopped and a voice reached Max's ears, a soothing sound after a storm of shrill noises.

"Peter? Are you up?" You called out, slipping into view with your apron on and flour on your cheeks. Max waited until you saw em still leaning against a wall, the cool surface a relief to the pounding ache in eir head.

"It's Max... I'm here..." E said, groaning out as e straightened up from eir position. You slowly approached em, careful to not trigger anything else; E — They— He appreciated you so much for being patient with him and the others whenever they got like this.

“Hey, what’s going on, Max? Am I being too loud?” You asked, and Peter shook his head.

"It's Peter, love... but Max and Spider are so close," Peter explained, walking toward you and falling into your open arms. He cuddles you closer until he blinks— Spider is holding you and Spider likes it. Spider cuddled closer to you, as it was a relief from the flashbacks that was currently happening inside.

"No one has to know."

William whimpered, pulling away from your hold and stumbling backwards. Ignoring your calls, he wrapped his own arms around himself and walked back into your shared room.

You walked in righ after him, but stopped at the doorframe. "If you need anything from me, I'll be just right here waiting. It's okay, baby."

"Shh, it's okay, it's just a game you and I play."

Max knew you couldn't have known what you said was a trigger, but it counldn't help but make e mad at emself that e couldn't even accept help from the system's partner without getting flashbacks. It felt horrible knowing that things eir partner did, did not help at all. But e knew that e can't just be rude out lf nowhere, so e said, "I'll call you."

You acknowledged e and left em alone, looking worried for em and the system.

"You will never be my father!"

Oh how Peter regretted that sentence he spoke to his uncle. Oh how Spider regretted not stopping that robber from leaving. Oh how they missed Uncle Ben so much.

After a while, the switches calmed down, with Peter thankfully staying in front for the longest time in that day. He came out of the room to see you sitting on the couch, absentmindedly watching a tv show you didn't care much about.

When you heard him approach, you tentatively opened your arms, inviting him once more into your hold. He, again, fell into you, cuddling close and missing your soothing hands run through his hair and down his back.

"It's Peter," He mumbled against your neck, "I'm sorry for shutting you out the whole day."

"Don't apologise, baby. I know you need some time alone. I don't hold it against you, you know that," You said gently, pressing a soft kiss on his forehead. "I love you, Peter."

"And I love you as well, love."

Kepler, Cave Lead Twins To Series Win!

Twins 6 Indians 2 W-Odorizzi (11-4) L-Bauer (8-6)

The Minnesota Twins have been questioned all year if they are for real. The team has faced some challenges, but has passed most of the question marks. This weekend’s series was the next big test for a team on the rise. They won last night and looked for the series win tonight in Cleveland. Max Kepler got the night started off on the right foot. He led-off the first and drilled a Trevor Bauer fastball out to right for a solo home run. This put the Twins up 1-0 after one inning of play. Minnesota got back to work in the second as Jake Cave led-off. He smoked a Trevor Bauer fastball out to left for a solo blast of his own. The Twins had a two-run lead, but were not done yet. Max Kepler came up later in the inning and had homered off Trevor Bauer in four consecutive at-bats this year. He knocked a Bauer curveball out to right for his fifth straight homer against the righty. The Twins now led 3-0, but the Indians would answer in the bottom of the second. Jose Ramirez would get Cleveland on the board when he smacked a Jake Odorizzi cutter out to right for a solo homer of his own. The Tribe were within two after two frames. Both starters threw up zeroes the rest of the way and it was a battle of the bullpens late. The Indians would rally in the seventh as Bobby Bradley took a Tyler Duffey fastball out to right. The solo homer got the Indians within a run after seven innings. The Twins would get some insurance in the eighth. Luis Arraez reached on an infield single and Jonathan Schoop single to right. Jason Castro bunted them over and the Twins were in business. Jake Cave plated a pair with a double to right and Minnesota had a 5-2 lead. Blake Parker threw a 1-2-3 eighth and the Twins would add on in the ninth. Jorge Polanco led-off with a single to center. Nelson Cruz reached on an error by Jose Ramirez. Marwin Gonzalez hit a sac fly to left and the Twins had a four-run lead for Taylor Rogers. He threw a perfect ninth and the Twins have taken the first two games from the Indians this weekend.

-Final Thoughts- Jake Odorizzi looked good in his first start after an injured list stint. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed a run on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Ryne Harper got out of a jam int he sixth, Tyler Duffey gave up the homer to Bobby Bradley and Blake Parker retired all four men he faced. Taylor Rogers had a 1-2-3 ninth to close it out. Jorge Polanco led the way with three hits. Max Kepler, Luis Arraez, and Jake Cave had two hits each. The Twins hit 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Max Kepler homered three times off Trevor Bauer in June and homered two more times against Bauer tonight. He is the first player to hit homers in five consecutive at-bats against the same pitcher. The team activated Jake Odorizzi and designated Adalberto Mejia for assignment. I’m not sure if Mejia will get picked up. He is a lefty with decent stuff, but had an injury this year. Maybe the Orioles take a flyer on him cause they need pitching. Eddie Rosario is close to returning, but I’m thinking he’ll be back on Tuesday. Tomorrow, Jose Berrios faces Shane Bieber in the series finale.

The Blazers have no cap space and will lose free agents. Here’s how they get better

Portland can’t add a max free agent, or anything close. But they can explore several routes to upgrade key positions on the roster.

After the Trail Blazers were swept out of the Western Conference Finals, a disappointing ending to an otherwise fantastic season, Damian Lillard offered this offseason approach to Yahoo!’s Chris Haynes:

“We just have to continue to improve with the guys we have,” Lillard said. “And then if it presents itself where we can get some guys in that can maybe take us to the next level, then look at that. I think that’s all we can do.”

The Trail Blazers aren’t in the market to sign a max free agent, but they are in the market to improve on their most successful season since 2000. With Lillard and the Trail Blazers in talks to agree to a supermax contract extension, according to Haynes, Portland doesn’t plan on going anywhere any time soon.

The West projects to get stronger overnight. You can bet LeBron James will be back in the playoffs, and the Clippers might land two max free agents. The Warriors have proven they’re just as good with Kevin Durant as they are without him, and several other West teams project to make leaps forward next season.

The Trail Blazers may have been swept out of the Western Conference Finals, but their success lies in arriving there in the first place. How does Portland give itself the best chance to return, while also improving its roster get over the hump next time?

It’s not easy, but the Trail Blazers have some options.

Upgrade via trade

Portland has one of the best backcourts in the NBA, but it desperately needs to upgrade at the forward spots. At times in the playoffs, Terry Stotts went to the bench instead of relying on starters Al-Farouq Aminu and Mo Harkless in critical stretches.

Evan Turner is a facilitator, but he only shot only 21 percent from deep this season and attempted and made just one three in the playoffs. Aminu becomes a free agent this summer, and Portland may not be able to retain him even if it wanted. The Trail Blazers will also find it difficult to keep playoff savior and free-agent-to-be Rodney Hood, and if a team makes a hefty enough offer on restricted free agent Jake Layman, it’ll be tough for Portland to match that, too.

That means the Trail Blazers will need to explore trade opportunities with other teams if they want to improve on the wing. Portland could explore trading one position to upgrade another.

Jusuf Nurkic isn’t expected to start running or jumping his surgically-repaired leg until October, but he will return, and when he does, Portland will automatically be a better team. Zach Collins is a young, floor-spacing, two-way big man gives the Trail Blazers a different look off the bench. Meyers Leonard is sandwiched between the two, and his 30-point Game 4 with five threes made may have been enough to win some rival executives over.

Can the Trail Blazers find a deal, pairing Leonard and a first-rounder to upgrade at the forward spot? A blockbuster (or Netflix?) idea could be packaging Leonard, Turner and protected picks in a deal for Kevin Love, who has won a championship and provides offensive firepower Portland could use in its front court.

Portland’s front office will have to be creative if they want to upgrade without cap space, and trading a player like Leonard, as beloved as he is, could be an option on the table.

To dump or not to dump?

Another factor in Portland’s ability to upgrade is which mid-level exception they’ll have at their disposal.

The mid-level exception is valuable because it allows teams to exceed the salary cap to sign one or multiple free agents. Last summer, the Clippers split theirs between Luc Mbah a Moute and Mike Scott, and the Bucks used their mid-level to sign two valuable playoff contributors in Ersan Ilyasova and Pat Connaughton. Other notable uses of the mid-level last summer were the Wizards signing Dwight Howard, the Hornets signing Tony Parker, the Pelicans inking Julius Randle and, of course, the Warriors landing DeMarcus Cousins.

It would be beneficial to the Trail Blazers if they are able to use the non-taxpayer’s mid-level exception. That would enable them to sign a player to a first-year salary of $9.25 million (or to a four-year, $39.7 million deal). If the Blazes project to be over the luxury tax, they will only receive the taxpayer’s mid-level exception of one-year, $5.7 million (or three years, $17.9 million).

The problem is that Portland already has $126 million on the payroll next season, and teams only have the full mid-level accessible if it doesn’t take them over the projected $138 million apron (about $6 million above the projected luxury tax). Thus, it will be impossible for the Trail Blazers to use the full mid-level if they don’t find a way to dump one of their larger contracts.

The obvious way to do so, if they choose to explore this route, is attaching an asset to Turner’s $18.6 million salary and trading him to a team with cap space to absorb it, like Atlanta or Sacramento. Lillard and McCollum enjoy playing with Turner because he takes the pressure of initiating the offense off their shoulders. But Turner doesn’t shoot threes, and threes are the name of the game in this era’s NBA.

If Portland creates space via trade, they can be in the market to sign a player like Marcus Morris, a versatile defender who can both create his own shot and hit spot-up threes. He’s the ideal complementary role player to a Lillard-McCollum back court who just so happens to play both ends of the floor. Another option could be using the full mid-level to go after Thaddeus Young, who made $13.7 million last season but might take a slight pay cut to join a contender.

Portland could also use its mid-level to re-sign its own free agents, like retaining Seth Curry, who posted the NBA’s third-best three-point percentage and will triple or quadruple his $2.8 million salary this summer. Portland will not have Bird Rights on Curry, so this is the only mechanism it’ll have to give him a raise. (The same applies to Hood and Enes Kanter should Portland want to keep them).

If they don’t create the space necessary to be eligible for the full mid-level, they will have the $5.7 million taxpayer’s mid-level exception available. That would allow them to enter the luxury tax to re-sign Aminu, but it would also limit the help they can get on the open market.

Develop their own players

Lillard said it best: Portland has to continue to improve with the players they have on the roster. Luckily for them, the Trail Blazers have several players who have yet to scratch the surface of their full potential.

Zach Collins showed flashes of becoming a legitimate 3-and-D big man in the postseason and should be a player to watch in the future. Portland selected Anfernee Simons with their first-round pick in 2018, and he was good enough to go from being a fifth-year high school senior straight to the pros. Skal Labissiere once had promise as a young player whom the Kings traded for on 2016 draft night, and he lit them up for 29 points in the regular season finale. Harkless has taken strides in his game becoming a reliable two-way wing, but he still can get better on both ends of the floor.

Portland also has the 25th pick in this year’s NBA Draft. In his latest mock draft, SB Nation’s Ricky O’Donnell has the Trail Blazers adding depth to the back court with Iowa State’s Talen Horton-Tucker.

The Trail Blazers will get Nurkic back at some point next season, and they were able to make the Western Conference Finals without him. If Portland can keep developing from within — and there’s no evidence to the contrary — their younger players should be able to step up and have a bigger impact next season.

It won’t be easy. Portland has a payroll stacked to the heavens and will more than likely lose key role players without finding adequate replacements. But that’s the name of the game, and champions find ways to improve with limited resources. The Trail Blazers will have to do just that, banking on Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum powering this team to another deep postseason run.

Portland got this far with small tweaks last summer. It’ll have to do so again this year.

Is Devin Booker the next great NBA shooting guard?

Devin Booker signed a five-year, $158 million early extension with the Suns over the weekend. This is a typical quick extension after Year 3 for star young players; while some who have not watched much of the moribund Phoenix Suns over the last three years may be surprised by the numbers, Booker clearly deserves. He averaged a shade under 25-5-5 last season on efficient shooting. He’s good!

In fact, despite being drafted No. 13 overall in 2015, he’s the third best player from that class right now, behind just Kentucky teammate Karl-Anthony Towns and Kristaps Porzingis. Both of those players should be inking max extensions soon, as well. No one else from that class is going to get that dough. A few players may yet get extensions, but nothing remotely this big.

The outstanding question for Phoenix as they lock up Booker is how good he can be. Right now he’s a fringe All-Star if you ignore that making the West pool, where Booker plays, is way more competitive than the East. (He might be an All-Star starter in the East.) Booker could score from the jump, but he’s gotten more efficient and turned into a really solid playmaker. The next step: cutting down on turnovers and bumping that three-point shooting percentage up a little higher (from 38%).

There is, of course, defense to contend with. That’s less of a concern for me right now. The Suns are absolutely awful, and have had nothing but coaching turmoil since before Booker arrived. There’s no basis for Booker to be good defensively. If he continues to be a minus on that end as Phoenix improves and pulls together some kind of defensive identity under Igor Kokoskov, then it becomes a concern. But right now, there’s no reason why Booker should be a passable defender. The Suns have run around lost and confused and totally overmatched for three years, through no fault of the 21-year-old Booker.

At that said, I’d bet Booker will make an All-NBA team -- not just an All-Star team -- on this newly signed contract. He feels like he could soon be better than C.J. McCollum and even Bradley Beal -- not quite the best two-guard in the NBA (hi James Harden) but in the top five.

Isaiah No Más

We’re running out of lucrative homes for Isaiah Thomas, folks, and I’m getting worried. It turns out he may not have been remotely close to a deal with the Magic before Orlando got mixed up in a bizarre little financial trade with the Hornets and Bulls. That trade resulted in the Magic taking on Jerian Grant, which precludes them (according to people with access) from signing Isaiah.

He can’t go back to the Lakers or Celtics or Cavaliers or Suns, probably, Kings (though the front office that let him go years ago has in fact left themselves). He’s made plenty of money in the NBA, but he’s never had that one generational wealth-creating massive contract, and he’s not guaranteed it next summer (unlike, say, DeMarcus Cousins), so taking a one-year mid-level flyer doesn’t seem attractive. But he might have to do it.

Or ... he could go to China for a year, make a boatload of money and win MVP, and show up for the NBA playoff stretch run and help a lucky team try to knock off the Warriors. The upside is that he’d get to torture Jimmer Fredette again. The downside is Isaiah’s massive pride and how leaving the NBA even temporarily in his prime (a season removed from second team All-NBA honors!) would wound it.

Second Half Outlook

I follow the Twins, Dodgers, and Giants on a nightly basis and while we push past the All-Star Break here is a look ahead of what all three teams might do moving forward in the second half. 

Minnesota Twins:

The Good: The Twins have a 5.5 game lead in the American League Central after a great first half. The offense has been one of the best in baseball with 166 home runs, which is the most in MLB. The team is hitting .272, which is tied with the Red Sox for the highest average in baseball. The Twins are getting through some injuries and Eddie Rosario should be back on Friday. Jake Odorizzi and CJ Cron’s injuries are minor and they should be back very soon. The starting rotation has been solid for a good portion of the year with Jose Berrios, Jake Odorizzi, and Kyle Gibson leading the way. Martin Perez and Michael Pineda have mixed in some solid starts as well. The bullpen has four very reliable arms with Taylor Rogers, Blake Parker, Trevor May, and Ryne Harper. Mike Morin, Tyler Duffey, and Matt Magill have stepped up at times, but have the occasional bad outing. The Twins need one or two more bullpen arms in order to take control in the American League Central race. 

The Bad: The Twins closed out the first half with a (6-7) record in their last thirteen games. The lead has dropped to 5.5 games and the Indians are playing some good baseball lately. Cleveland went (15-9) in June and have won all five games in July. Corey Kluber won’t be back until August and Carlos Carrasco might be back in September. The Indians have been doing it with Trevor Bauer, Shane Bieber, Zach Plesac, Jefry Rodriguez, and Mike Clevinger in the starting rotation. The Indians have been there and won the division three straight seasons. It appears that the American League Central race is going to be closer than anticipated. 

What Needs To Happen: The Twins need to add a reliever or two in order to contend at a high level in the second half. The team has two nice trade candidates at AAA right now. Brent Rooker is hitting .286 with fourteen homers and forty-seven RBI’s at Rochester. The Twins outfield is full with Eddie Rosario, Byron Buxton, and Max Kepler. Jake Cave and LaMonte Wade are the fourth and fifth outfielders on the team. If you can trade Brent Rooker and Nick Gordon to the Giants for Will Smith and Tony Watson then the Twins would be in business. Gordon is hitting .290 with two homers and twenty-nine RBI’s. The Twins also have an in-house option with Cody Allen. They signed him to a minor league deal. He has thrown four shutout innings with four strikeouts for Fort Myers recently. He will likely move up to AAA before the Twins call him up. I think the Twins should trade for a guy then see how the Cody Allen project works. Allen can be a reliable reliever when he’s right. 

Los Angeles Dodgers:

The Good: The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a tremendous first half to 2019. They have amassed 60 wins and have a 13.5 game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West. Corey Seager, AJ Pollock, and David Freese are working their way back from injuries as well. All three of those players should be back after the All-Star Break. The Dodgers are a deep team and the bullpen has finally shaped up into a reliable part of the team. Joe Kelly has allowed one earned run in his last 13 1/3 innings and is becoming the set-up man the Dodgers signed to a huge deal. Kenley Jansen is slowly returning to his old form. Pedro Baez has a 2.70 ERA on the year. JT Chargois has been amazing in his return to the big league club. He has struck out 15 in his last seven innings of work. The starting staff had three All-Stars with Clayton Kershaw, Hyun-Jin Ryu, and Walker Buehler. Maybe the Dodgers add a starter or a reliever, but they don’t need much come July 31st. 

The Bad: There isn’t much bad for the Los Angeles Dodgers. They have the best roster in baseball and one of the best farm systems in the game. They have the resources to make just about any trade if they need to. I only see them acquiring another arm. Rich Hill is going to play catch next weekend and the Dodgers hope he can start in September. That would be a big boost to this great starting rotation. Even if he’s not stretched out then he can still be a reliable lefty reliever. Ross Stripling and Julio Urias are solid options, who can start in Rich Hill’s absence. The only other question mark is Russell Martin and his health. He had a low back issue earlier this year. Will Smith and Keibert Ruiz are ready in the minors though. Overall, the Dodgers don’t have much to worry about after the break unless injuries pop up. 

San Francisco Giants:

The Good: The Giants finished the first half strong. They are scoring tons of runs and the starting pitching has been better to go along with a solid bullpen. The Giants are (7-2) in their last nine games and are now within 5.5 games of the second wild-card spot. Alex Dickerson has been a welcome addition with a .362 average, four homers and fifteen RBI’s since getting claimed off waivers from the Padres. The team even has a chant for him and other players. It seems like the clubhouse is revitalized by his presence. Austin Slater has been a secret weapon with a .429 average, two homers and nine RBI’s in five games since his call-up. Pablo Sandoval has been a great story and has hit either in a starting role or pinch-hitting role. Madison Bumgarner and Jeff Samardzija are finding their rhythm in the starting rotation. Shaun Anderson and Tyler Beede are learning how to pitch at the Major League level. The bullpen is full of solid arms. Will Smith has nailed down all 23 saves this year with a 1.98 ERA. Sam Dyson has a 2.30 ERA, Mark Melancon has been a nice option, and Tony Watson is the eighth-inning guy. Reyes Moronta can escape out of any jam it seems like.  

The Bad: The Giants bats might have finally turned on, but it might be too late. The team is winning and it’s already the middle of July. The team will need to leap frog lots of teams to get the second wild-card spot. Farhan Zaidi has not been shy about making moves this year. He has moved tons of outfield pieces and will likely trade Madison Bumgarner, Will Smith, and Tony Watson at the trade deadline. The good news is that the Giants have some reinforcements at AAA. Fernando Abad, Pat Venditte, and Ray Black can all help the bullpen if current arms get traded. It should be an interesting month for the Giants.
