Stepping outside the police station felt like a strange return to the land of the living - although Akiyama had spent but one night behind bars while his involvement in the recent murder case investigated in Kamurocho was processed, it still had been a... Most enlightening experience. 

A single evening, alone in a provisional detention cell had been a frankly eye-opening occasion; the Japanese police was really not looking to improve their reputation or manners - for a moment there, if the loan shark hadn’t been sure he had nothing to do with the Ueno Seiwa thug shot in the head by Arai, he would have doubted it himself given the sheer intensity of the interrogation.

Fucking scary - Akiyama could only imagine what they did to those who, unlike him, lacked basic notions of their rights and the money to hire a good lawyer, should the worst come to pass. A joke, really - an organization created to protect the regular citizens and instead causing them harm more often than not.

But his thoughts were completely derailed when he saw a familiar redhead figure outside - the moneylender paused, hand carrying his jacket over a shoulder dropping the item completely and almost dragging the piece of clothing over the pavement while he walked over to Lyla to say hello. Her look was an interesting one - a mix of evident curiosity with a side of judgement for his choices, apparently.

“Lyla-chan - wasn’t expecting a welcome party. I wasn’t locked up for that long, was I? What day is it?” he joked as he approached, but the woman snickered, shaking her head. Lyla then wrinkled her nose, making a face at something before taking a couple of steps and working on his shirt, smoothing the fabric off any wrinkles.

“Nah, your head is good, just the one night. Sent Hana-chan home after she got you released and said I’d pick you up when they let you go. Poor thing looks like she hasn’t slept in a couple of years...” Lyla commented and Akiyama found himself nodding - if it hadn’t been for the precious statement of his secretary, the police might have been even worse with him. His thoughts, however, were interrupted with a sound of frustration from the redhead, “How many guys did you fight in there for a bunk bed? Your shirt looks like shit, can’t get this to look any better. Jacket,” she asked, hand outstretched to the loan shark and receiving the item from him.

“Huh... No one. I was alone, but their beds are not exactly the five-star hotel stuff, you know,” the moneylender offered with a chuckle, watching Lyla attempting to make a miracle out of his jacket before dropping it over his shoulders and groaning in a displeased manner that had Akiyama laughing at her lack of success. She stepped back and crossed her arms, apparently on the imminence of giving up.

“Yeah, sorry, that’s the best I can do. You’ll have to live with the used car salesman look for today - let’s go, I’m taking you for lunch, then sending the expense receipts to Sky Finance and locking you into your office,” Akiyama raised an eyebrow at the next steps - not that he minded paying for the meal or anything, but Lyla seemed to be on a mission. As if on a cue, she grinned and explained:

“I promised Hana-chan. She deserves a break and you’re a handful, Akiyama,” her grin at the end, however, was a fond one. The loan shark didn’t have the heart to argue - Lyla and Hana working together was not something he should mess with if he didn’t want to find himself back in jail... Or worse. These two ladies could easily turn his routine into pure, unaltered chaos if they so wished, and not necessarily of the fun kind.

“Aye, ma’am. Lead the way then - now you mentioned it, I wouldn’t mind some decent lunch. Prison’s food not great either, I think I had better grub when living in the streets. Really makes you think, huh.”

1. hmmm i think akiyama tbh? i feel like people boil him down to shweepy lil malewife (and I'm guilty of this too) a little too often when he's literally a loan shark who makes desperate people jump through bizarre reality tv bullshit to get help from him, stuff that's kinda unnecessary when he's got scrooge mcduck money. it's literally his main shtick as the lifeline of kamurocho. i think he's fundamentally meritocratic and odd and also he was volunteered to kill a guy so kiryu didn't have to which is just. he's down to kill ok you random civilian you. and i think it should be explored more!! i don't think that i have a great grasp on his character but i feel like he's more sleazy and cold and weird and maybe even shallow than people make him out to be? let him be morally gray. if you love him love him anyway, those bits included, yeah?

Energetic VGM

When it comes to video games, a soundtrack certainly helps to capture the intentions that developers have with the games they are creating. Whether it's to illustrate the feeling of a certain character or to play into the overall tone of the game or scenarios within the game.

For Example: "Speed Star," Shun Akiyama's battle theme in Yakuza 4, does a rather perfect job of conveying the coolheaded, smart mouthed personality of the CEO of Sky Finance and Kamurocho's Lifeline.

So in regards to this post, I invite you to read through and listen to some songs I think best conveys an "Energetic" Feeling. Now bear in mind that not all songs are going to be "high octane" as much as they might be more "lively" or "enthusiastic" or even conveying a sense of being determined. For convenience purposes, I am putting a break here.

Teknopathetic (e-Pop 'n Disco 80s Mix) - Ollie King

Of the many soundtracks that Funky Uncle Hideki Naganuma has worked on in his career, many people certainly know him for his work on Jet Set Radio, Jet Set Radio Future and Sonic Rush. However, Naganuma has also worked on the Sega produced skateboarding arcade game Ollie King. Connecting JSR and Ollie King is that Naganuma has remixed some tracks from the former, such as the one I have chosen here. Teknopathetic was already a high energy techno track in Jet Set Radio Future, so the remix takes that energy into a more funky direction for the comparatively grounded Ollie King.

Moving on.

Challengers - Dragon Ball Z Budokai

For a man who was proven to have plagiarized a LOT of music in his career, former Dragon Ball Composer Kenji Yamamoto has some rather fantastic taste in music to steal from. Now, Challengers in particular is probably one of the more iconic songs from the DBZ video games, the song that I guarantee almost everyone thinks of when they think about Budokai. It's high octane, it absolutely fits as fighting game music and undoubtedly captures what it felt like to watch Goku and Frieza have their legendary battle on Planet Namek, aaaand it's also literally just note for note Hunting High and Low by Stratovarius. When Bandai Namco published the Budokai HD Collection in 2012, the soundtracks for Budokai 1 and Budokai 3 were completely replaced and their new soundtracks came frankensteined from Budokai Tenkaichi 2, BT3, BT Tag Team and Ultimate Tenkaichi. Additional note: I absolutely do not tolerate plagiarism of any kind. So while I find Yamamoto to have fantastic taste in music, I hold no respect for him personally.

Now Onward, to the next one. The final one for this post.

The Palace That Was Found - Sonic and the Secret Rings

Now admittedly, there are a LOT of sonic songs that could easily be here as well. Far too many for me to list. Now I'm going with the theme of Evil Foundry from Sonic and the Secret Rings because I think it's a rather fitting song for the topic. It's quite a bold song that mixes the motifs of the 1001 arabian nights with the headstrong heroics of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Side Note: Many also know this song as the intro song for youtuber Cobanermani456. I for one think that if anyone was gonna rock a place, it was certainly him. Great Guy, wish him the best in the world.

The Lifeline of Kamurocho and our favorite slacker.

秋 aki = autumn

山 yama = mountain

駿 shun = a good horse, speed, a fast person

- About his family name: Autumn in Japan is the season of harvest and abundance of the blessings of nature. Akiyama uses his vast amounts of money to help the desperate people that come to him as a last resort. He loans his clients money free of interest and collateral in exchange for passing one of his tests. He is a former homeless man who benefitted from the “blessing” of the rain of money in the Y1 finale and now uses the fortune he amassed to give others the chance to change their lives. Akiyama is very generous, but he is still a loan shark who will eventually collect (harvest) the money he loaned to his clients.

In autumn, mountains are very popular spots for Momijigari (”autumn-leaf hunting”), a tradition where people go to see the red maple leaves and yellow ginkgo leaves that now decorate Japanese landscapes. It is similar to Hanami, the “flower viewing” tradition in spring, famous for the cherry blossoms viewing.

- About his given name: An obvious reference to his lightning-fast fighting style of swift kicks. His battle theme in Y4 is even named “Speed Star.“

íf Platinum is Akiyama does that mean that Doctor is Hana-chan?

I don't think Platinum has a Hana-chan in the same way that Akiyama doesn't have a Doctor. This is important because the addition of Hana-chan to Akiyama's life was a direct consequence of him becoming the Lifeline Of Kamurocho, whereas Doctor coming into Platinum's life is, instead, directly a result of Platinum not having had an Akiyama Millennium Tower moment, years later, when her hands were already irreversibly stained with the blood that keeps the cogs oiled and turning, and comes in as not only someone that can understand her and that she feels very comfortable with, but also as someone she legitimately can considers a friend she wants to spend more time with.

In other words, while Doctor and Hana-chan have things in common, they are ultimately results of mutually exclusive twists of life, with all that entails.

For the past few days, Akiyama had been more absent than usual from Daigo's apartment; he had told his boyfriend that he had some urgent matters to attend to at Sky Finance, and that with Hana soon to be married and moving away from Tokyo, he had been swamped with work and other administrative matters. The fact that the loan shark had never been the most organized person in terms of office affairs also justified the extra time away. When he finally got everything in order, it was very late in the afternoon - with the sun still on the sky, Daigo was looking no better than a corpse, immovable on his bed and in the room submerged into darkness. Akiyama knew the pathway to the vampire by heart - even as his eyes adjusted to the lack of light, his feet was already impressively trained to arrive at the intended destination. The younger male climbed onto the mattress, and then claimed his place - he leaned on his side and embraced the creature's form, an arm keeping him close even if the chances of Daigo moving were minimal. With such proximity, he could hear the faint heartbeat that lingered within the immortal's chest - the residual effect of the last feeding, a reminder that he was a living man despite all arguments to the contrary. Akiyama wouldn't dispute the biological certainty of death - but he refused to acknowledge a vampire as some sort of hollow shell. Particularly when he had made his mind to become one himself. It was only when Daigo stirred and regained consciousness that the loan shark followed suit, giving him room to stretch his limbs; an old habit preserved up to that moment, and one that made Akiyama smile. Although he could see the room now with much more clarity, it was the pair of red, shining orbs that he focused on - his lover was awake, and pleased to find him there; he knew Sky Finance had been demanding more time than usual. ...But only because he was organizing all his affairs, using the last days following Hana's departure to structure and plan what would be his post-mortem empire; he was going to leave his own humanity behind, but he wouldn't abandon mankind at all. His mission, perhaps, was just beginning. "Hey," the moneylender said softly, lips curving when the other moved to envelop him in a hug, face hiding in the curve of the loan shark's neck. It was not even that Daigo necessarily needed to feed - it was just that it had become one of their favorite ways to show affection and to translate their bond. Akiyama had once clung to Daigo for dear life - he was happy to be a literal lifeline to the other now, although that was about to be cut short. "I wanted to tell you something," Akiyama said, a hand going up to move through the older one's hair, fingers carding through raven-like tresses with tenderness; the fact that his breathing and heartbeat did not go out of control demonstrated just how certain he was, and the fact that the loan shark had finally come to a decision that left his mind at peace, "I decided to join you - in eternity, I mean," he pressed his lips against the top of Daigo's head then, almost as if that soft kiss sealed some sort of promise. "I want to be turned, Daigo - I've made preparations, I've seen that Hana is well-looked after, I've settled everything over at Sky Finance, Elise and the other places... I'm ready for this," a pause, and Akiyama closed his eyes, "I want this, if you'll have me."

Daigo missed him. It was a fact as true as his inability to face sunlight or swallow water. The vampire had grown used to having Akiyama close  ―  as a lover, as a source of food, as an impromptu protector when other supernatural entities chose to appear. However, when Sky Finance demanded his boyfriend’s attention, Daigo didn’t argue. Akiyama’s work was important to him and his impact in Kamurocho was impossible to ignore. Daigo needed his lifeline, yes, but their beloved home depended on him even more. 

          ―  and, having mated  .    .    .  Daigo knew that Akiyama was alright. A little stressed, perhaps, or tired given what his company asked of him ( and being none the wiser, the creature assumed it was merely several requests for loans at once or more elaborate tests that needed planning ). Now that Daigo had a word, a definition for the thoughts in the back of his mind that weren’t his own, the entire affair was much clearer. He couldn’t help the pang of guilt he felt whenever he reflected on what Melissa and Azumi told them ; in many ways, Daigo’s unconscious decision to take Akiyama as his lifelong partner read to the ex - yakuza like him fastening a ball and chain to Akiyama’s ankle. Daigo believed what the mysterious figures that served as his instructors said : without the loan shark, he would have no desire to find other sources of blood and would likely perish out of grief. It was impossible to give words to the depth of his emotions in a way that Akiyama or any mortal would understand, but they mirrored what Melissa and Azumi described. 

          There were nights that he wanted that : to have Akiyama understand what his fumbling description ( or their teachers’ eloquent explanations ) attempted to share. Daigo knew it was selfish of him, though, and he would never ask Akiyama to experience it merely for his sake. To do so would mean becoming the same monster as Daigo, to give up a life that would one day end in peace. The creature had promised Akiyama that the decision would remain firmly in his hands and that he would do nothing to persuade it. Daigo was determined to hold to his word.

          The vampire knew his mate entered his inner sanctum long before Akiyama’s arm slipped over his cold frame. It was because of that bond, half - formed as it may have been then ; Daigo recognized in the midst of his sleep that his lover was returned to him through the emotions stirring in his being. His dreams softened and grew more peaceful at Akiyama’s arrival. A small smile, hidden by hair and darkness, came to his countenance despite his body’s obstinate desire to remain at rest. Daigo was FULL AND HAPPY. There was no reason for him to will his corpse up or his eyes open yet. The sun lingered in the sky, and he was naturally inclined to stay exactly as he was. The resting corpse of a monster being cuddled by a living man would read as blasphemous on the surface for the greater population, but to Daigo these precious moments were pure bliss. 

          Once night began to creep into the edges of the world, Daigo stirred. A sort of life returned to him, a mimicry of what he used to be. His stretch and light groan were not needed ( he hadn’t felt the ache of an aging body or uncomfortable scars in years ) but gave Daigo satisfaction nonetheless. The instincts that brought his features against Akiyama’s neck, however, were entirely vampiric  ―  to seek comfort in the pulse and warmth of a living creature and hide away in the paradise formed by their scent and skin were wholly inhuman desires. Daigo nuzzled into his favorite place, strong arms folding around Akiyama, and issued a deep, pleased noise from his throat.

          He listened to Akiyama in a haze. Thusly, the weight and meaning of his statements didn’t register to the vampire until a minute after. Akiyama continued to stroke his locks, awaiting the realization to come to his lover. A stiffening of Daigo’s limbs announced when the loan shark’s request finally sank in, as did the pausing of the quiet intonations passed from his thin lips. The moneylender opened his eyes as Daigo slid away from him. Akiyama moved with Daigo, following his unspoken requests.

          The creature rolled Akiyama onto his back gently and rose over him. He swung a leg across Akiyama effortlessly, hands pressed flat to either side of him, and gazed down at him with brilliant red eyes. Daigo’s mouth hovered open. His brow was furrowed. Akiyama’s fingers reached up to cup the vampire’s cheek reassuringly. The heel of his palm landed at the edge of Daigo’s lips. 

          There was no question in Daigo’s mind of Akiyama’s conviction ; he could sense only peace in the connection he shared with the human beneath him. That the younger man’s heartbeat and breathing remained so steady, as well, reinforced his surety. 

           “Of course I would have you,” Daigo murmured, nestling into Akiyama’s touch. “  ―  you’re  .    .    .  everything to me. I want nothing more.” His stare narrowed, and the creature’s expression took on an amused quality. “Your ‘ preparations ’  ―  that’s what you were doing recently.” As Daigo spoke through the information, the pieces fell together. To understand that Akiyama had evidently planned for this gave him comfort, too. 

           Daigo turned his face slightly and nipped affectionately at the base of Akiyama’s hand. The loan shark chuckled. He was accustomed to the fleeting feeling of his skin splitting. Daigo didn’t draw blood all of the time ; when he was inclined to behaving lovingly or playfully, he would merely scrape his fang(s) against the uppermost layer of Akiyama’s flesh and tear it lightly.

            “Mm - hm. I had to get everything ready,” Akiyama confirmed.

           Daigo moved his mate’s hand from his cheek to join its fellow on the bed. It did not go unoccupied for long : the vampire curled his frigid fingers into Akiyama’s hands and held them tight. He lowered himself down in order to kiss the loan shark deeply. He smiled at the sound of Akiyama’s breath catching.

          “I love you, Shun,” the creature said quietly.

timeline for the akiyama family :

2017 * - azumi okamura ( 33 ) and shun akiyama ( 39 ) meet in a hostess club ( the honey bee inn ) owned by their mutual friend melissa drysdell in kamurocho, tokyo. the heiress goes out of her way to tell the flirtatious moneylender ‘ no ’ for her entertainment. despite being playfully rejected more times than he can keep track of, akiyama happily continues to play okamura’s game.

2018 * - okamura and akiyama begin an on - again, off - again relationship that is at first characterized by casual sex and the desire to know each other. this string of supposed meetings in the name of a good time slowly evolves into something more as neither party can seem to formally stop contacting the other or find interest in anyone else.

2020 * - daigo dojima returns to kamurocho and into the arms of his love, melissa, following a lengthy absence. okamura and akiyama are a perplexing sight for the ex - yakuza : not committed to any label, but regularly attached and very close. 

2021 * - akiyama asks okamura if she will be his girlfriend at the western / u.s. wedding of melissa and daigo dojima. this is greeted ecstatically by the bride and groom, who have been not - so - secretly cheering the couple on from the sidelines.

2022 ** - niran is born in little asia, a neighborhood in kamurocho, tokyo. his parents are both undocumented thai immigrants taking odd jobs in the area to get by.

2023 *** - twin girls emmanuelle and madeleine are born in the democratic republic of the congo. their mother and father were members of the luba people and lived in the kasai region of the drc. the girls’ father was killed in a violent incident not long after their birth, and their mother had aid in raising them by their maternal grandmother. the twins grew up speaking a mixture of french and luba - kasai.

2025 * - shun akiyama ( 47 ) and azumi okamura ( 41 ) secretly elope and are legally married. this event comes mainly in response to their tentative interest in starting a family of their own through adoption, which is not possible in japan if a couple is not wed.

2026 ** - niran’s birth mother dies shortly after he turns 4 years old.

2026 *** - the girls’ mother passed away suddenly from illness. their grandmother decided to give the twins up for adoption ( age 3 ) through a global charitable organization out of fear that she would lose more of her family. she hoped to see them again one day. the worker who helped the girls’ grandmother took detailed notes from her regarding their direct family history, the importance of their many names, and spirituality.

2027 *** - the twins, now 4 years old, were formally adopted by shun ( 49 ) and azumi akiyama ( 43 ) in kamurocho, tokyo. they expressed interest in them after hearing their story through a friend working in a similar vein as the one the organization managing the girls’ case did. shun akiyama’s conversational french helped their family connect until the girls felt comfortable enough to begin learning japanese from their new parents. the twins introduced their adoptive parents to the nicknames they preferred in how they referred to themselves : emma and made, which were short sounds their birth mother used affectionately for them.

2028 ** - in a bid for self - preservation, niran moved himself onto the streets of little asia to avoid his abusive birth father ( age 6 ). he promptly became the terror of the neighborhood and engaged in pickpocketing and petty theft regularly. niran also riled up the other children who faced a similar plight as him, much to local police displeasure, and was always identified as the ringleader of this ragtag group.

2030 ** - niran is taken in by shun ( 52 ) and azumi akiyama ( 46 ) after the lifeline of kamurocho catches the 8 - year - old boy trying to lift his wallet.

2031 ** - once niran’s lack of relations is confirmed with the help of local authorities ( inc. a close family friend, masayoshi tanimura ), he is declared an orphan legally. this opens the door for him to be formally adopted at age 9.

i lost my goddamn mind when i learned that tanimura can speak filipino, so here is tanimura speaking filipino
