━━ fear not the road untaken .
Sunday hadn't spent long with the Stellaron Hunters before boarding the Express, but the memories he'd made with them were priceless. One quiet day in the Express's cabin, while reflecting on his experiences with the Hunters, you appear to visit him.

“Sunday, we’re going out to Belobog for a bit. Wanna come with?”
Heeled boots still in the midst of a step. Feather-like hair shifts and tousles as he turns his head. At the invitation, gold melts, sapphires glitter, and a gentle smile warms his lips.
March is a blessing, he thinks. She is bubbly, kind, and always manages to light up whatever room she steps into - in that regard, she is not too unlike his beloved sister. Although her ability to plan ahead leaves much room for improvement, he cannot deny that it was her presence that made his transition into a Nameless much easier than it would’ve been.
Although, truthfully, he’d expected more resistance from her - out of everyone, she seemed to be the most traumatized by the Charmony Festival Disaster, and she also had more of a distaste for Stellaron Hunters than the others. But surprisingly, she’d come around to him, and welcomed him into the Express with open arms - and a lot of food. He swears, every time she’s come back from a trip, it’s another sweet or drink shoved into his arms - not that he’s complaining, though.
“Thank you for the invitation,” he begins, then rests a hand over his chest as a reflex. “But I’m afraid I’ll have to refuse. The last expedition has left me rather exhausted - and as you know, I don’t fare well in cold weather.”
Dan Heng nods in understanding. He’s never been a man of many words, and for that Sunday appreciates him. He rather likes straight-forward people, who aren’t afraid to say their mind - perhaps that’s why he’s grown to adore both the Express and the Hunters so much.
“Is there anything you want us to bring back?” pipes up the Trailblazer, dog-like eyes shining as they lean over March. “Like, sweets or whatever?”
Sunday bites back a chuckle. Somehow, word had gotten around that Sunday had quite the sweet tooth. He doesn’t know who started it or how they found out (he has his suspicions on March), but ever since the trio has been dragging him around to various planets and encouraging him to try the local desserts.
He wonders if he’s gotten cavities yet. He hopes not.
Maybe he should check again, at a later time.
“That Rye Bread Iceberg you brought last time was rather enjoyable. I’d like to try it again.”
March and the Trailblazer brighten at his words. “Okay, on it!”
Dan Heng only hums his acknowledgement before turning to leave the parlor car. “Let’s go,” he advises the others. “You know Seele doesn’t like to wait.”
Sunday has never personally met this Seele (the Trailblazer describes her as a crass but kind-hearted warrior), but her fury is enough to whip both March and the Trailblazer into shape. It isn’t long before the trio is waving him goodbye as they descend into the frozen planet, and he also bids them farewell.
And then it is just him, and the conductor.
A small sigh leaves him as he sits down on one of the many couches. He wasn’t lying when he said he was exhausted. Fighting - or any physical activity, for that matter - isn’t exactly his strong suit. Even during his time with the Hunters, he’d stayed behind the front lines, acting as a pseudo Kafka with his carefully crafted words and tuning abilities.
That’s one of the few things about the Hunters that he prefers over the Express - they didn’t force him to hike through deserts and jungles and mountains and Xipe knows what else. All they did was throw him off a skyscraper in the name of the script (he’s pretty sure Elio just wanted to see if he’d actually fly or not).
Sunday blinks, realizing just what had just passed through his mind. Then he sighs with a smile, leaning back into the red plush of the couches.
Only a few months since his fall, and he’s already beginning to think as weirdly as the rest of them.
“Sunday, are you alright?”
Sunday glances down to see the conductor waddling by his feet.
Pom Pom is… strange, no doubt - for whatever reason, Dan Heng fears them and has advised Sunday to not anger them at all costs. Their past is shrouded in mystery, but Sunday finds himself drawn to the conductor. Perhaps living most of his life in a fever dream like Penacony has warped his perception of what is normal and what is not.
“I’m fine, thank you.” He shifts on the couch to make room, but the conductor shakes their head.
“Are you sure? Pom Pom saw you laughing to yourself,” they fret, tapping their nubby hands together anxiously. “Have you been sleeping enough?”
Sunday crosses one leg over the other, and rests his hands over his knee. “If you’re concerned about my transition from Penacony to reality, be at ease. The Hunters have practically beat a proper sleep schedule into me.”
Pom Pom yelps in shock. “B-Beat?! They beat you?”
“Not literally,” Sunday hastes, instinctively reaching out a hand to calm the conductor. “It was more akin to… ominously threatening checkups. Although, there was this one time-”
He sees the look on Pom Pom’s face, and decides to stop it there. He fears they might break out sobbing if he continues.
“Nevertheless, rest assured that I am sleeping at an appropriate time,” he finishes reassuringly. His practiced smile pays off as the conductor gradually calms down, albeit worry about the Hunters’ methods still lingers.
“Alright, if you say so, Sunday.” They look around uneasily. “Do you want anything to drink?”
Sunday waves his hands hastily. “No, I am alright, thank you-”
“He’ll have some tea.”
Pom Pom jumps with a shriek and Sunday’s wings puff up. A familiar laugh ghosts his ear, and immediately Sunday’s face brightens.
“What- What are you doing here?!” Pom Pom quickly hides behind one of Sunday’s slender legs, hugging it like a lifeline. Sunday places a hand on their head to calm them as he turns to the hologram with a warm smile.
“At ease, conductor, they’re a friend.”
Your holographic form glitches in and out of reality. There’s a thin blue filter over your appearance, but other than that, everything is the same as he remembers.
“Hey, angel,” you coo, leaning your elbow on his shoulder as you sit besides him. Its weight is not the same as it would be in reality, but the presence is enough - a small, barely noticeable tingle that has his heart fluttering and his wings following in suit. “How’s life as Nameless? Do you miss us yet?”
Sunday laughs gently. “It has only been two weeks since I left the Hunters. I’m afraid I haven’t had the time to miss you all.”
You pout playfully, sticking out your tongue.Even though parts of you chip away and reappear, and your form isn’t stable, Sunday can’t help but be as captivated by you as he was when he was still among the Hunters’ ranks. Where the projection fails, his tinted memory fills in.
“Silver Wolf misses you, although I doubt she’d actually say it,” you say, taking a lock of his hair and twirling it around your finger. “Has she visited you yet?”
Sunday stutters a bit before weakly batting your finger away with his wing. “No, I’m afraid she hasn’t.”
“Hm.” You smile at his attempt to brush you off. Letting go of his hair, you instead opt to tug lightly at his cheek, earning a squeak from the Halovian. “That’s weird. Maybe she was too shy to speak up.”
“I-” Sunday rubs his cheek when you finally let go. Embarrassingly, his wings jump to shield his face, an unfortunate reflex he’d yet to curb. “I suppose she was…”
He hears you hum, and he lifts a wing to peek at you. His cheeks feel hot - no, that’s an understatement, the entirety of his body feels as if he’s in a fireplace.
“Give her my regards,” he finally breathes out, thanking the Aeons for his training in keeping his composure. Sure, it ultimately fails whenever he looks at you, but at least he’s able to fix himself quickly enough… or at least, he hopes that’s what it looks like.
“You didn’t answer my question though.” Propping your elbow on his shoulder again, you rest your cheek in your palm. “How’s the Nameless life treating you?”
“It’s chaotic,” Sunday admits with a fond sigh. He relaxes into the couch once more, feeling himself sink into the plush. Briefly, he’s tempted to lean his head on your shoulder, but given that you’re a holograph, he holds himself back. “But it’s fun. The Nameless have been kind, and the planets I’ve visited… It’s nice, to see the universe as someone other than a wanted criminal.”
“Wow. Thanks.”
Sunday would apologize, but considering that it’s you he’s talking to, he doesn’t feel the need to. After all, you’ve said worse to him, and him to you.
“You know what I mean,” he chuckles. “To be honest, though, the Express and the Hunters aren’t so different.”
He hears Pom Pom squawk indignantly, and again he ruffles their fur to calm them. Turning ever so slightly to your hologram, he gazes at you with adoration and fondness swelling his heart.
“To the both of you, I am forever grateful. If it weren’t for your kindness, I’d be rotting away in an alley somewhere. I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
All distaste for the Hunters fades from Pom Pom as they giggle bashfully. “Aw, Sunday… You don’t have to thank us. We were just doing what the Nameless do.”
You nod in agreement, reaching through his wing and poking his cheek again. “Conductor’s right. No need for thanks, birdie.”
“Still-” Sunday makes a sound like a startled bird as you poke his cheek harder, squishing it against the rest of his face. Underneath his coat, his primary wings strain with the urge to flutter and twitch, while his secondary wings are held back by sheer willpower. The only sign that they want to flap so badly is with the tiniest of tremors.
“None of that,” you chide him gently, tapping him lightly on the plush of his lips. “We’re just glad you’re happy - right, bunny?”
“Who’re you calling bunny?!” Pom Pom protests, steam puffing out of their head while steam threatens to escape Sunday’s face for completely different reasons.
Before you can reply, however, your form begins to glitch out, flickering in and out of reality at a higher frequency. With an annoyed click of your tongue, you stand up.
“Looks like Silver Wolf isn’t happy,” you comment, brushing off imaginary dust from your clothes. Taking one step so that you’re fully in front of Sunday, you lean in so that your projected nose barely brushes against his. “I have to get going now. You have my number, so text me if you need anything, okay? Or if you want to catch me up with your travels, you can always call me.”
Sunday’s voice feels lodged in his throat. With a subtle gulp, his Adam’s Apple bobbing ever so slightly, he manages to speak with an even voice.
“Okay,” he whispers, his voice almost a whimper. He wants to explode.
You smile fondly, and duck in to peck at the corner of his lips. The buzzing of your holograph morphs into electrifying lightning, surging into his veins, puffing up his feathers and making all of his hairs stand up and sending his already tapping heart into a frenzy. His body freezes into a statue, and all coherent thoughts melt away into a haze that is both ecstatic and shocked.
By the time you pull away, his wings are flapping erratically and his entire body is dyed in a rosey red. His mouth opens and closes like a fish, but all words die on his tongue and he is left blabbering like a fool.
You laugh again, eyes crinkling so beautifully he swears he’s ascended.
“If that’s how you react, I wonder how cute you’ll be when it’s the real deal.”
And then you’re gone, vanishing like a sweet dream in a flurry of pixels, leaving Sunday there to dazedly touch his lips, and then where you’d kissed him.
And then he smiles, giddily, and his halo practically glows as soft, love-stricken giggles begin to leave him.

Most royal heirs are to be married off for alliances, your family was no different. At the age of seventeen, your father asked you to meet him for a proposition.
A proposal.
From the kingdom of Castrum Kremnos, an alliance marriage was proposed, you were to marry King Mydeimos.
He is but a prince now but in a few months he will be crowned King.
You understood and nodded, this was what was considered normal in your social standing.
But you couldn't accept it.
Marrying a man you've never met? No way.
So you tried to run away.
On the day of your wedding.
In the midst of trying to climb up the trellises of the garden, a deep voice questioned you from behind you.
“Are you trying to climb the walls?”
You whip your head back to see who had caught you, but seeing as it was someone you did not know, you only glared at him.
“Do you not have eyes?”
He nodded and pursed his lips, “Well, forgive me for asking such a question, what I meant to ask was the reason behind your actions,”
You huffed and jumped down from the one foot you managed to climb in your heavy dress.
“My father is marrying me to a Prince I've not met at all,”
The stranger hummed, “Oh, I see, well that truly is upsetting, who is the Prince if I may ask?”
You roll your eyes, “The Prince of Castrum Kremnos, Mydeimos, or however you pronounce his name.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, and I wish not to be married to someone I do not know,” you say and turn to the wall once more.
The man watches as you struggle to climb up in your dress and sighs before joining you to climb.
“What are you doing?” you raise an eyebrow.
“I shall get up on the wall and pull you up,”
“What?!”
He lets out a small laugh, “What? Is that truly so absurd? It's quite taxing watching you struggle, I'll have you know,” he says.
“No! I meant-” you step off of the wall once more, “Why are you- why would you do that? Who even are you?”
He smiles and shrugs.
“Mydei.”
“Mydei who?”
“Just Mydei,”
The two of you stare at each other for a minute in silence.
You weren't stupid, you've obviously just met the man you were supposed to marry, and you've just told him of your intention to run away.
So you speak.
“I have no intention of being wed for political matters,”
“And I have no intention of using you for such reasons,” he replies swiftly.
“You weren't even at the wedding preparations! I've only met you now and had no idea what you looked like!” you stress and he puts his hands in his pockets and awkwardly purses his lips.
The silence stretches on to be uncomfortable.
“I apologize, your majesty-”
“Mydei.”
“If I had known-”
“You would've what?”
You look elsewhere.
“You would've never told me you didn't want to be married to me-”
“I did not!”
“You just said so-”
“No, I didn-” you cut yourself off, realising that you did say that.
Prince Mydei hums.
“I only wish not to be married to a man I do not know,” you say quietly, “and I do not know you.”
“I do not know you either!” he jokes, “Other than of course, the fact that you are a terrible wall climber-”
“You try to climb the wall in all these garments!” you laugh as you lift your dress a bit, showing the layers of layers of fabric beneath your dress.
The two of you smile at each other.
“What do you want to know?”
“Pardon?”
“You said you didn't want to marry a man you didn't know-”
“I don't- I- you-” you huff and look away, “Everything.”
He raises an amused eyebrow, “Everything?”
He looks around and begins to ramble about himself.
You stay silent, listening to him talk as he tells you his interests, he likes pomegranates, he likes to cook and to make pastries, and he's actually a Mama's boy.
“And I have no qualms about marrying a girl I've just met hours before our wedding, but I do promise you that I am choosing to marry you,” he says softly.
“Even if you are getting married to a ‘terrifying man’,” he jokes, “I assure you I am marrying you as Mydei, not as the prince, not as the king, but as Mydei, just as a man.”
“Just Mydei?”
“Just Mydei.”
You smile at him and he smiles back.
The marriage took place that day.
You should've known better.
“Welcome to the Chorismós House,” Mydei tells you as he assists you to get out of the carriage.
You gape in awe.
“Yes, it is your house,” he says and steps up the stairs.
“What?”
“Your house, the Chorismós House, I had your belongings moved here,” he says.
You stare at him for a few seconds, your shoulders aching for rest, your corset digging into your ribs.
“Do correct me if I am wrong, but is it not supposed to be our house?”
He purses his lips, “Well I suppose our official house would be in the Capital.”
“Where will you stay?” you prod.
“I have an estate in Epithymía,” he replies as he goes up the stairs of the house.
“So you will stay there?”
“Yes.”
“And I will stay here?”
“Yes.”
You stare at him with uncertainty.
“Mydei… it is our wedding night,” you try to stress the word in hopes he would understand.
He nods, “Yes, and it is late, and you have to meet your staff, it would be better if you rest early, it has been a tiring day after all,”
“Are we-” you pause, not wanting to make a fool out of yourself, “Should we not do what married people do?”
The king pauses in his steps, “Are you demanding I do my marital duty to you?”
You stutter, not expecting him to blurt a question outright, “No! I- I haven't even the slightest idea of what marital duties are, I just… are you not staying with me?”
He stares back.
“My governess told me that married people spend the night together, she told me it is what happens on a wedding night,”
Silence.
Then, he throws his hands up, “Fine, I shall stay, are you coming?”
He didn't even wait for you so you had to hike your gown up and run after him.
“Mydei, wait!”
You run through the staff mentioned earlier as they clap their hands and you stutter your steps to bow politely then run to catch up to your husband in the foyer.
“Mydei!”
“What?” he turns, irritated, “You wanted me in the bedroom, did you not?”
“Not like-” You swallow, becoming glaringly aware of the staff steps away from the two of you, “I have upset you, tell me what I've done and I'll make it right.”
He doesn't reply.
“Look, I am sorry, whatever it is I am sorry,”
“You've done nothing wrong,” he tells you, “It's just, I want to go to Epithymía-”
“So let us go to Epithymía.”
He sighs.
Oh.
“You do not want me to go to Epithymía,”
“This is your home,” he tries to make you understand.
“And that is yours,”
“Yes.”
“I see.”
He takes a breath of relief, “You understand, good, you will be alright,” he says and heads towards the door.
Alright? You'll be alright?
“Mydei, is this how it will be?”
He stops.
“Is this how our marriage will be? You there and me here?”
He hangs his head low.
“It will be easier, my lady,”
“Easier for whom?” you ask as your voice shakes, betraying your feelings on the matter.
“Pardon?”
“Easier for whom?” you repeat, voice louder that you're sure the staff could hear, “Me or you?”
“It has been a long night, I do not wish to argue with you,”
“I am merely asking,” you say trying to temper your feelings, “I just want to understand you need to tell me-”
“I do not need to do anything! I am your king! I decide, I have decided!” his voice echoes.
Oh.
The staff try to hide their faces but you know they heard it, who wouldn't?
“My mistake. Forgive me, Your Majesty,” you said, voice detached, uncaring.
Mydei knows he fucked up when you say your next sentence.
“I thought you were just Mydei.”
He calls your name but you interrupt him.
“Is there anything else you wish to tell me? Or may I retire for the night, your highness?”
He utters your name once more in a whisper.
“It is for the best,” he says.
Mydei sees you nod, eyes to the floor as you place your hands together, “Of course, your majesty, the king,” he thinks you say it to spite him.
“Whatever you wish,”
Again, he calls your name, almost begging, whatever for you're not sure, and takes a step forward.
On instinct, you take one back.
He takes one look at your face.
You try not to cry as he turns and leaves.
You should've jumped the wall.

usagi's note: THERE WE GO!!! im actually thinking of making this into a full blown fic, like ill take this scene and add more to it cuz again i have never seen the show where its from, but like maybe in future, but i don't want to just copy, cuz then it would be plagiarism and not actually writing...
also just wanted to say that Chorismós is greek for separation while Epithymía is greek for yearning, so yeah I have no idea how to world build well, but its the symbolism so i hope u guys get it ^^
tell me if u guys would like that!! HOPE UR PULLS GO WELL!!! i got e0s0 castorice both unguaranteed and under 60 pulls! im really happy, i hope u guys get her early too!! im thinking of getting e0s0 cipher and s0 aglaea, cuz she's already e0 for me hehe. ━━ to walk amongst the living .

“Achoo!“
The cold was starting to get annoying.
Sunday sighed, biting back his frustration as he wiped his nose with a handkerchief and tugged his scarf to better shield his face. It was a good thing he’d decided to bundle up before leaving Penacony; otherwise, he would’ve already died of pneumonia.
The Planet of Dreams and Festivities was the very definition of a paradise. Everything, from the colors, the sounds, and the temperature was carefully maintained to never be too much or too little.
Sunday did not have such privileges here.
He didn’t remember when the last time he saw snow was. Back home, the closest he’d seen to a natural landscape was the Moment of Oasis, where tourists lounged about on the spectacular beaches - and even then, Sunday hadn’t exactly had time to indulge in such luxuries.
His nose was no doubt red from the cold, and his thighs burned from the long hike he’d decided to torture himself with. Wind battered his hood against his face, occasionally blocking his vision or smacking him. Sunday’s wings instinctively shielded him from the incoming snow that somehow made its way past his hood. He grimaced at the feeling of the ice catching and melting on his feathers, already dreading having to clean them out.
Upon reaching a somewhat flat piece of terrain, he gave himself mercy and allowed himself to stop for a break. His halo, his main weapon against frostbite, glowed gently with a heat not unlike a fireplace as he surveyed just how far he’d traveled.
Mountains upon mountains greeted his gaze, all jagged and covered with the same multi-colored snow that was the staple of this planet. He stood among fallen aurora, and down below, he spied a cluster of bright, warm lights that stood apart from the greens, blues, and purples of the snow: the cities, where he’d first arrived here.
Zastrugi was a planet infamous for its harsh conditions, rivaled only by the recently reintroduced Jarilo-VI. Even so, the people here prided themselves on their resilience, and gladly welcomed those seeking a challenge or a death-defying thrill.
In other words, it was a cemetery of the arrogant and the ambitious, and a perfect fit for Sunday’s current goals. After all, what better way to live a mortal’s life than to endure their struggles?
Sunday looked down at himself. His legs were weak, shaking and trembling from the hike, and no doubt were only kept standing due to adrenaline. His chest burned from haggard breaths, cut again and again from each frosty inhale. His head felt light. He wanted to die.
If this wasn’t suffering, he didn’t know what was.
It was invigorating.
Never before had he felt more alive, with the frost biting at his cheeks and the pain that ransacked his body. He could hear his heart beating in his ears, fighting yet strong and resilient and surviving. A soft smile graced his pale lips as his breath fogged in the air.
How strange, he mused. To find such joy in his own suffering… Was he always this twisted?
“I was wondering when you’d catch up.”
Sunday turned to see you sitting on a rock nearby, snow brushed off of stone so that you could sit without wetting your pants. One of your legs is propped up as you look out at the view, your bored expression proof enough that you’d been sitting there for a while.
You were a fellow traveler he’d met sometime on his travels. Sunday still groaned whenever he remembered your first encounter; he’d gotten swept up in a sudden storm and remembered too late that 1.) he didn’t know how to swim and 2.) his wings were not waterproof. Had you not dove into the raging tide and pulled him out, he would’ve drowned for sure.
Ever since then, you’d accompanied him on his travels - or, rather, he accompanied you on yours. Sunday, with what little he knew of the world outside of Penacony, knew not what his destination was, nor where he should head off to. Your goal was a little more simple - you wanted to see all that was beautiful in the universe.
Even if that meant climbing to the tops of unreasonably steep mountains or camping out in unbearingly hot deserts.
Thankfully, you weren’t opposed to his offer (begging) to join you - on the contrary, you were thankful that he had been the one to say it because in your words, you didn’t know if he would survive if you left him alone by his lonesome.
He still didn’t know what to make of that. For his own pride, he chose to ignore it for the time being.
“Were you waiting long?” he asked, gloved fingers holding the edge of his hood as to keep both it and the snow out of his face. You shook your head, your own hooded cloak flapping in the wind as you looked back out at the view.
“Not as long as I might’ve in the past,” you joked lightly. Sunday breathed a laugh.
Back when he’d first walked alongside you, he’d fought a long and hard battle with his own stamina. It was embarrassing when he thought back on it, how many times he’d have to ask you to stop for a break or even had to be carried by you to the nearest rest stop. Sometimes he wondered why you kept him around, but of course, he never asked.
But he’d grown stronger and more resilient since then, at least, he hoped he did - if not for you, then for his pride.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Your voice was rather wistful as you spoke, a little breathless and hushed, yet clear in the crisp, scarce air. “What do you think? Was it worth it?”
“I’m not so sure,” Sunday tried for a joke of his own - although, he wasn’t all joking. No matter how much he traveled, he could never get used to the feeling of his own breath scraping against his lungs as he heaved for air.
You, intuitive as ever, sighed knowingly. “Sit down. You look as if you’re going to pass out.”
Brushing aside some snow on the rock, you shifted over to make room for him. Gratefully, Sunday fought demons in order to stop his trembling legs from collapsing in from under him as he lowered himself onto the rock. That would’ve been mortifying.
His breath fogged in the air as he sighed, thankful for some rest. Around him, the snowfall was gentle and slow, and as the moonlight from Zastrugi’s two moons caught on each individual flake, ribbons of light came and passed like wisps of smoke.
An echoing click of metal caught his attention. He looked to his side and was greeted with a cloud of steam warming his face. In your hand was a small metal thermos that held what he assumed is either tea or hot water. You gestured for him to take it.
“Drink; you need to warm up before we continue. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if you died of hypothermia.”
Sunday breathed his gratitude as he took the thermos. Your fingers brushed slightly, but with the cold, he registered it only after it was gone, and by then it was too late to respond. Still, his heart skipped regardless, and he turned away before he dwaddled too long, thankful for the cold that had already reddened his cheeks.
He blew gently on the liquid within, and took small, careful sips as to not burn his tongue (it’d happened before, and it was humiliating). He was delightfully surprised with the subtle floral tastes of white tea, his favorite. It was obvious that it had been sweetened, and the honey added was just enough so that it satisfied his cravings.
But, as Sunday drank away, the tea warming him from the inside, he thought to himself - he never told you he liked white tea specifically, nor did he ever tell you how much sugar he preferred. How did you know?
Had you, every time you’d taken him to a local cafe or restaurant, watched and observed? Had you remembered, from the few times you’d seen him order or make a drink for himself?
His hold on the thermos faltered as fire rushed to his cheeks. In his chest, under all those layers of cloth and cloaks, a dance unfolded, his heart tip-tapping away, a steady rhythm that was both nerve-wrecking and comforting.
Sunday inhaled deeply, wings fluttering ever-so slightly, and pushed his thoughts away to focus on the tea, nearly burning his tongue in the process. You only raised a brow before returning your sight to the distant city. A comfortable silence enveloped the two of you.
As Sunday gazed down upon the scene, a sharp ache in his sides and a stiffness in his legs, he wondered - was this how Robin felt, when she performed from that grand stage of hers. Sure, the aurora couldn’t compare to the lightshow that accompanied his sister’s concerts, but still - there must be some similarities. Here, at the top of this world, he felt light, as if nothing could ever touch him.
“O chosen one, who dared to exceed his bounds. Sever your wings, descend to the mortal realm, and walk their lands. See what this world is truly like.”
Lady Bonajade’s words rang in his head. Instantly a scowl twisted his features.
He’d never liked the IPC, and he wasn’t going to start now - especially not with a snake like her. He could still hear her taunting voice, that indifferent condescention presented as good-natured pity dampening his mood. There wasn’t much that could truly anger him, but it only seemed natural that it was yet another IPC Stoneheart that managed the feat.
But still, she had been right… much to his chagrin. As much as he hated to admit it, he had flown too high from the people he wished to protect. Even the Astral Express - whom he respected far more than Jade - had made it clear: Know your people before you decide what was right for them.
“What’s on your mind?”
Sunday flinched. You peered at him from behind your hood, face gentle yet your brows were furrowed ever so slightly.
“Ah, I apologize.” He lowered the thermos to his lap. “I was… thinking.”
“I know,” you replied. Shifting slightly so that you could lean back on your hands, you stretched your legs out into the snow. “You do that a lot.”
With a kick, you sent the snow flying into an arch off the cliffside, creating another ripple in the aurora.
“Thinking too much in a place like this… seems like a waste, doesn’t it? Try and take a break from your brain, and just- see. Look at where you are.”
Sunday raised an abdominal wing to block the multi-colored snow from falling into his thermos. Shaking the snow off the twilight feathers, he sighed, staring into what remains of the tea.
You clicked your tongue. Snow crunched, and cloth shuffled, before the cap of the thermos blocked his view. Screwing it closed, you took the thermos from him, a twinge of annoyance tugging at Sunday as he mourned the last bits of tea still left in there.
Before Sunday could complain, however, you beat him to it.
“Don’t give me that look,” you teased lightly. “We’re almost to the top - you can finish your tea there.”
The beginnings of a pout tugged his lip, but with a reluctant sigh, Sunday abided. Pushing off of his knees, he brushed himself off.
“Very well,” he relented, but not without fixing you with a flat stare first. If you saw it, you didn’t say anything, for you had already begun your trek to the mountain’s peak.
The higher you climbed, the harsher the snow became. No matter how beautiful something was, Sunday found that he didn’t care if it was pelting him in the face with as much punch as a bullet. His hood became his shield, and he hurried to keep in pace with you.
Because unlike him, who specialized in Imaginary and Quantum manipulation, you were a master of fire. Your footprints lasted longer than his for the mere fact that you seemed to melt through the snow, and as long as Sunday kept close to you, he wouldn’t be at risk into becoming a popsicle.
But that was easier said than done. Again, you were far more traveled than he was, and as such you moved at a much faster pace despite the melting snow’s attempts at slowing you down. Sunday was already dreading the next morning - he’d have to do a full-body stretch for at least half an hour after this was all done if he wanted his legs to be functionable tomorrow.
Every now and then, you would glance back at him, as if making sure he hadn’t been swept up in an avalanche - which, if it weren’t unfortunately a valid concern, would’ve damaged his already ruined ego. And each time, Sunday would meet your gaze, and offer the tiniest of smiles before returning to his suffering.
By the time you had reached the summit, Sunday was well about to pass out. The air was thinner up here, making it hard to breathe, and his exhaustion did not make things easier. But he had done it, and surprisingly, he had kept in pace with you.
He breathed as much as he could, swallowing what little oxygen he could grasp from the top of the world. A wheeze or two ripped through his lungs. Wordlessly, you pressed his inhaler into his hand, a pat on his back to congratulate him. Sunday nodded his thanks.
Once his medication had done its magic and he no longer had to focus on the struggles of breathing properly, he realized that the world had gone silent. Snow no longer pelted at his face, and the aurora had gone dark.
And then he swept his gaze, and saw the clouds below him. Somehow, without noticing, he’d passed through them, and entered an entirely different plane of Zastrugi. Here, there was nothing but sky, and the stars - real, actual stars, not the false ones created by the snow, danced in nebulae above him.
And there was you, your cloak flapping in the wind as you gazed up at the cosmos. With so little light, he could only see your silhouette, but he has the impression that your back is turned towards him.
You are silent, as you always are when you see new sights. In moments like these, it was as if your breath had been stolen, and it is all you could do to absorb the picturesque scene before you, engraving it into your mind to store for all eternity.
Once, Sunday had expected you to take photos of your journeys, as a memento. But you never did. No, rather, you would stand there, memorizing every little detail, and then return to your temporary home to paint it instead.
And he swore, those paintings were almost always more magnificent than the places they were based on.
Sunday took one last look towards the everlasting cosmos before coming up to your side. Rather than the sky, the image he drank in was you. Your expression was soft, yet awe-struck, much like a child seeing the world for the first time. There was always a sort of melancholy in your eyes, but also a love for everything that he could drown in if you allowed him to.
You loved the world, and it was that love that he adored.
You turned to him, noticing his gaze, and for a moment, it was if time itself had stopped. His breath caught in his throat, and words died on his tongue. All he could do was look into your star-speckled gaze, all the colors of the universe casting their light onto the two of you.
What expression was he wearing, he wondered? A smile, or perhaps… something else?
But then you raised your hand, brushing it against his cheek ever so slightly, and all of those thoughts disappeared.
A smile wove onto your lips. “You had some snow left on you.”
Sunday tried not to miss your hand as it left him. His fingers trace what you had left, his gaze becoming lidded.
“Ah,” he breathed.
The corner of yours eyes crinkle, and you turned to the cliffside. Leaning over slightly, you peered over the edge, the clouds obscuring the true height of the fall. Sunday blinked.
“What are you planning…” he sighed, crossing his arms. You chuckled, turning slightly to meet his eyes.
“One way or another, we have to get down,” you pointed out. Sunday’s expression fell flat.
“Don’t even think about it.”
Your feet toed the edge, sending rocks and snow tumbling down. “You said you wanted to experience life as a mortal to the fullest, didn’t you?”
“I wasn’t aware that included throwing oneself off a mountain.”
You shook your head, a grin surfacing. “You’re no fun, Sunday. Don’t you have those wings of yours? What do you have to worry about?”
Sunday’s answer was immediate. “You.”
“How sweet of you,” you commented as he came to besides you. “Well, then, you’ll just have to catch me, won’t you?”
Sunday squeezed his eyes shut, pinching the bridge of his nose. “[Name], I swear upon all that is good in this world-”
He opened his eyes. You were already gone.
Sunday swore.
Midnight unfolded behind his back, clashing with his white cloak. Without so much as a second thought, he dove into the clouds headfirst, shooting through the sky like a meteor as he searched for you.
The second the fog of the clouds leave, however, he was thrust into a world of color. He fell alongside the snow, and unlike when he was on the mountain itself, he became a part of the aurora. The colors nearly blinded him, if not for the fact that he had his sights set on one thing - your falling figure, so close yet so far.
He tucked his wings as to fall faster. The second he reached you, he grabbed you, arms locking around your waist and pulling you into him, where it was safe.
“You’re a fool,” he scolded as your chest met his. You laughed, throwing your head back to return to the aurora.
“And yet, you saved me all the less.”
Sunday rolled his eyes as your legs wrapped around his waist. His wings returned to their full wingspan, catching the wind and ensuring that your fall didn’t end in a tragedy. He swerved and turned and glided, dodging peaks and keeping his sights on the city.
And all the same, you laughed, nothing short of pure glee in your voice.
And he sighed, fondness squeezing him regardless.
Yes, you were a fool.
But you were a fool he couldn’t help but love.
