我的阿勒泰 To The Wonder : An Analyzation of Humanity (Part 1)

哈薩克文化裡，人與人之間產生友情或者愛情，是由於被看見，所以在哈薩克語中，我喜歡你意思是我清楚地看見你。

In Kazakhstan culture, in order for individuals to develop a friendship or a relationship, they need to be seen, that is why, "i like you" means "i can see you clearly" in Kazakh.

"To The Wonder" is a Chinese show that tells the story of Li Wenxiu, a Han girl from Altay, whose dream is to become a writer in Beijing, thinking that with it's rich culture, she would be able to write good stories. She returns home after a failed job, decided to settle down and work at her mother's store, along the way, she met Kazakh boy Batay, and built friendships with other residents, as well as discovering the beauty of Altay.

As a fellow Chinese, I would like to take the opportunity to make not only an appreciation about this wonderful show that got an impressive score of 8.1/10 on IMDB, but specifically an analyzation of humanity as reflected by the characters (Zhang Fengxia, Gao Xiaoliang, Li Wenxiu, and Tuoken)

As the mother of Li Wenxiu, losing her husband is one of the only things that Zhang Fengxia truly cannot let go of. Numbing herself with alcohol every night, reminiscing the memories between her and her late husband, but whenever her daughter asks about it, she avoids the topic and claims that she does not miss her late husband. In reality, deep in her heart, she not only deeply misses him, but she longs for love, a deep connection with someone.

When Gao Xiaoliang came along one day, she was blinded by her longing, diving headfirst into a relationship with him, claiming that he was sent by her late husband. There is no wrong in that, as humans, we all have an innate longing and want for love. However, when she realized everything that Gao Xiaoliang did was only an act, she allowed herself to grief what they had, what she thought they had, and sat with her emotions, quickly picking herself up after and moving forward with life.

In my opinion, that was truly the most touching yet heartbreaking moment in the show. Unfolding the complexity of the human heart, as well as demonstrating the strong will that humans are capable of - to live, to move on, to move forward with life despite the amount of times our hearts have been trampled all over.

Most audiences think Gao Xiaoliang is a bad person, lying to Zhang Fengxia about his true intentions, earning her trust and leaving her behind, and lying to Li Wenxiu when they were working together in Urumqi. But that's the thing about humanity, there is never an exact definition of what's good or bad. Just because someone did something doesn't make them a bad person. In order to understand him truly, we need to look at the character from their perspective.

Being robbed when he first got to Xinjiang, losing everything he's worked for and truly losing directions in life; decided to hold on to Zhang Fengxia as his last resort, but seizing the opportunity of earning money because that's his priority in life - to earn money.

Blinded by his want for an adequate life, for money, he lied to Zhang Fengxia and left her behind, he negotiated with his boss to get Li Wenxiu's severance pay, but only giving her the 1/3 that he actually received. Yes, he may seem like the villain to the protagonists, but that would be an unfair statement to his character as a whole. Did he want to settle down with Zhang Fengxia? Yes. Did he give Li Wenxiu some of the pay when he could've kept all of it to himself? Yes.

But at the end of the day, as humans, we all get blinded by certain things, we all have our own wants and may do anything in our power to "seize the moment". Actions that we commit don't define us, who we are, because we have to understand that humans are complex and there is no "black-and-white" to us. All these actions only added to the depth of the character and our sympathy for what he went through, and how he got to the point where he was mad.

All 20 eps are available here. This series is so so low budget. The subs are AI translated, so they are a bit of a mess, but not so much that you can't follow the story. Ep 12 is missing the sub on YT, but someone uploaded the srt file on MDL. Watcher beware, this series has a BE. Though not entirely. It could actually be a HE depending on how you look at it. Despite all the negatives, I enjoyed this series. It nails the "so much left unsaid, but you know" thing that mainland Chinese series do so well and the actors have good chemistry.

It's been over a week since I finished this series, but I'm still thinking about it. Major plot spoilers under the cut.

GAH! The triple sacrifice was so tragic and I loved it. Yizhi knew that going back to the academy and saving Shaozhong meant his death but he did it without hesitation. I did not expect Shaozhong to then sacrifice himself to bring Yizhi back to life. I just about lost it when Yizhi woke up to find Shaozhong's dead body next to him.

Then to top it off, the cat demon re-entered Yizhi's body, not to take Shaozhong's linglong heart, but to sacrifice himself to turn back time to give Yizhi and Shaozhong a chance to start over. 😭 So tragic, so selfless on all sides. Both versions of Yizhi loved Shaozhong so much. 😭 Post series, Yizhi and Shaozhong do well in their studies, fulfill their dreams of becoming just officials together and remain boyfriends forever. There can be no other ending.

I'm more pissed at Mangotv robbing us than at the BE.

This still made the rounds on Chinese socmed yet it was cut from the series. The angst! Arghhh why did they cut this? Were they scared people would think it was a bl? Well too late. It is no matter how they try to hide it.

Truly "Jin". However, in modern Japan, there is a man who is the exact opposite, "Non-Jin: Never gentle". He is Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. This guy taxes the people at every opportunity and boasts they can achieve a primary balance surplus of 800 billion yen in fiscal 2025. In other words, he has robbed the people of their money and transferred it to government offices. He has been nicknamed " The Man with Glasses Who Increases Tax". He gives away that hard-earned tax money to foreign countries such as Ukraine without consulting the people.

The voices of resentment from the Japanese people are gradually growing louder, and it has been almost a year since the cabinet's approval rating fell to 20%. However, Japanese politics is controlled by the corrupt Liberal Democratic Party, and its head, Fumio Kishida, has not resigned as prime minister and is clinging to his job.

Farm work assignments were divided by class, each with different tasks.

Xu Hao's class got assigned to pick corn.

Picking corn is actually pretty simple—grab the ear at the top and pull down, and the ripe corn comes right off. But this season was a bit late for harvesting corn. Many ears had rotted on the stalk, with the husks covering big, blackened, moldy lumps that had bugs crawling all over them. Xu Hao had only picked two bad ones along the way, and the girls behind him were screaming like crazy. Even he was pretty grossed out.

The corn stalks were planted super densely. To get deeper into the field, you had to push aside all kinds of branches and leaves. But corn leaves are tough, and the stalks grow at least eight feet tall, which means walking through a cornfield not only makes it hard to see your surroundings but also makes it easy to get your hands cut by the leaves.

In the morning, nobody was very skilled yet. Everyone freaked out over every little thing, filled just two baskets of corn, and called it a day. In the afternoon, the class figured out a plan—not everyone needed to go into the field. The boys would continue picking corn, while the girls would stay on the edge and remove the kernels. This division of labor seemed reasonable, and everyone was cool with it.

Xu Hao rolled his pants up to his calves, carried a bamboo basket slightly larger than a backpack, and pushed his way deep into the cornfield. Good ears went into the basket; rotten ones got tossed on the ground. After collecting about half a basket, he heard rustling sounds nearby, knowing someone was coming, but the stalks were too dense to see who it was.

Xu Hao kept moving forward.

Pushing aside the tough stalks, he noticed a clear human figure moving. Xu Hao shifted his gaze.

There stood Yan Ze, about two or three meters away, carrying the same kind of bamboo basket, holding a freshly picked ear of corn.

Being in the same class, running into each other like this seemed perfectly normal to Xu Hao.

But the person across from him didn't seem to think so. When Yan Ze looked over, his expression froze for a moment, a hint of confusion crossing his features, looking quite surprised.

This was genuinely a rare expression for Yan Ze to make.

Then, under Xu Hao's somewhat puzzled gaze, Yan Ze suddenly, instinctively, took half a step back. The corn in his hand slipped and fell to the ground.

When Yan Ze looked at Xu Hao again, his eyes were full of wariness.

That feeling... it was like Yan Ze thought Xu Hao was about to rush over and rob him. But what did Yan Ze even have on him? Corn?

After three seconds of staring at each other, Xu Hao pointed at the corn on the ground and said, "Uh, your thing..." fell.

Before he could finish, just one syllable in, Yan Ze took another half step back. His gaze seemed torn apart by Xu Hao's first syllable, all his defenses crumbling along with the confrontational atmosphere, as if a weakness had been discovered. All that remained was an awkward panic.

Yan Ze looked like someone who'd been caught in the rain, his energy flaring up then suddenly extinguished. He hadn't even heard what Xu Hao was saying. He turned around, pushed through the corn in another direction, and walked away with hurried steps.

The guy vanished in seconds. Xu Hao ended up picking up that plump ear of corn from the ground and tossing it into his own basket, thinking, "What a waste."

Come to think of it, ever since that day when Xu Hao went with him to fetch hot water, Yan Ze had been acting weird.

Even Xu Hao could tell that Yan Ze was deliberately avoiding him. The reason wasn't clear, but the behavior was super obvious. Like yesterday evening, for instance. Yan Ze had been leaning against the balcony railing playing on his phone. Xu Hao needed to sit on his bed, which happened to be right next to Yan Ze. But before Xu Hao could even sit down, Yan Ze, as if suddenly triggered by something, picked up his feet and walked straight out of the dorm.

After a few such incidents, even Wang Haoran noticed something was off and came over to ask, "Did you and Yan Ze have some kind of beef?"

Xu Hao looked completely puzzled. "Beef? Nah, don't think so."

Then he thought, if he had to guess, it was probably from that night getting water, when Yan Ze got spooked in that pitch-black area. Afterward, he must have felt embarrassed about his reaction, couldn't save face, and now couldn't stand the sight of Xu Hao who had witnessed it.

It's like those ancient officials who did something embarrassing and shameful, then wanted to kill everyone who was with them to silence any witnesses. Probably the same logic.

This actually made things easier for Xu Hao. When Yan Ze used to talk to him, Xu Hao never knew what to say. Now with the two of them completely keeping to themselves, Xu Hao didn't have to navigate that anymore. After all, Yan Ze was just that kind of person—spend any time with him, sooner or later, you'd offend him somehow. Nothing much to say about it.

Wednesday's basketball game had everyone pretty excited since they didn't have to do farm work all afternoon.

The boys who would be playing for each class had been decided in advance. After lunch, everyone arrived early to start warming up.

Having spent most of the year in Class 2, Xu Hao had a good idea of everyone's playing style and skill level. Xu Hao could play both inside and outside, but he found guard most comfortable. Yan Ze was a typical small forward, and the other teammates filled in the remaining positions around them.

Xu Hao borrowed a ball from someone and started dribbling on the sidelines to warm up. As he turned to switch hands, he strangely felt a gaze fixed on him—pretty intense too.

Xu Hao glanced in that direction following the feeling, but found nobody looking at him.

Over there stood only Yan Ze.

There was just Yan Ze standing there.

Hard to believe, but they had this tall, bulky fat guy who couldn't really play ball but specialized in marking players. He'd commit five fouls and get sent off in every game, and Class 8 actually called this a "strategy." This made Class 8 infamous on R High's basketball court—nobody wanted to play against them.

So when Zhang Xusheng complained, everyone agreed. But this was just students playing for fun. Even the highest ranking wouldn't add points to the college entrance exam. Bottom line, it was just about these young guys saving face. Xu Hao figured it didn't really matter who they played against.

At two in the afternoon, with the sun at its best, the game began.

Class 2 started off okay. After getting the first jump ball, they moved it from the perimeter to the restricted area. Zhang Xusheng took a shot that the other side couldn't block, but he missed it himself. The ball hit the rim and bounced back, immediately stolen by someone from Class 8.

Then Class 8 scored the first basket.

Cheers erupted from Class 8's side of the court. Thankfully, Zhang Xusheng was the kind of guy with plenty of spirit—he didn't need consoling after missing a shot. He just glared angrily at Class 8's side and muttered, "Was that really necessary?"

Xu Hao went over and patted his shoulder. "No big deal. Watch your bro me sink a few three-pointers in a bit. That'll show them."

Zhang Xusheng brushed Xu Hao's hand away with disdain. "Get outta here with that 'big bro' talk. Don't pass the ball to me later. Give it to Yan Ze—he's our scorer. I'm just a bench warmer."

Xu Hao gave Zhang Xusheng a surprised look. "Well, well, look who's grown up! Being modest now?"

As he spoke, Xu Hao again felt someone watching him. Maybe because they were closer now, the feeling was even more intense than before.

Xu Hao turned around. This time he wasn't mistaken—it was Yan Ze again, definitely staring at him.

But as soon as Xu Hao met his gaze, Yan Ze's eyes darted away like they'd been shocked with electricity. His reaction was so quick that his head hadn't caught up to turn away, making him look a bit stiff.

Zhang Xusheng leaned in, looked over there too, and said to Xu Hao, "Look at that, just look! Just because you didn't pass the ball to Yan Ze, he's so pissed he won't even look at you properly. Besides, Yan Ze was off his game today.

A big fat guy with limited agility—with Yan Ze's skills, breaking through that containment shouldn't be difficult at all.

Xu Hao knew that once Yan Ze had a chance to get the ball, his whole body would radiate a kind of pent-up intensity. Those sharp eyes, left fingers slightly curled—it all meant he was ready, could take the ball and run at any moment without losing control.

But not today. Not only was Yan Ze avoiding any eye contact with Xu Hao, his whole body was full of openings.

For real, Xu Hao's vision went white for a second. Two hundred plus pounds coming down on you—hurt so bad he could barely string a sentence together.

Xu Hao had only been lying there for a couple seconds when someone yanked him up to sitting. Opening his eyes through the cold sweat, well look at that, he almost fell back down from shock.

Why was it Yan Ze?

This time Yan Ze didn't avoid Xu Hao's gaze.

He slowly released his grip, looking down with unusual intensity, like he was trying to burn a hole through Xu Hao's left foot with his eyes.

Xu Hao found his staring kind of puzzling, so he repeated, "Really, it's fine." He pointed to the stands. "I'm heading back, okay?"
