Mr. Plankton...

Such an underrated series... Has a little bit of everything. I found myself feeling a range of emotions at every twist and turn. Laughs. Cries. And everything in between. I wasn't expecting much going into it, but it left me feeling some type of way...still lingering and thinking about it. The acting of the cast was superb, especially Woo Do Hwan's character... Woo Do Hwan always delivers... and the chemistry between the cast is all there. Cinematography on point.

Watching It's Okay, That's Love again as an adult is so comforting. To have similar problems as the characters and visually see them conquer their fears and traumas. Yeah it's fictional but doesn't mean I can't relate to it. When you have days when you feel like giving up. It's a nice reminder that maybe its possible one day. Finding someone to lean on. To show my darkest parts and still be loved.

JBL Week Day 3: Favorite Moment - Choosing Happiness

It’s probably a stretch to call this a single moment, but I’m going to go ahead and do so anyway because narratively, I see this as a single, critical ‘moment’ in Kang Doo and Moon Soo’s relationship. 

KD: What are you doing out in the cold?

MS: What are you doing here? I only thought about wanting to see you, but you really came. It’s uncanny. 

KD: Aren’t you cold?

MS: How come you’re here?

KD: Telepathy. I had a feeling you’d be wanting to see me. 

“Telepathy” - He could have told her that her father had called him (how much do I love that her father called him?) He didn’t though, because right then, all that was important was that she needed him and he was there. Just as Moon Soo was there for Kang Doo when he was hurting and in need of comfort, Kang Doo is there for Moon Soo when it’s her turn to fall apart. Both of these characters suffer from trauma (him from PTSD, hallucinations, survivor’s guilt, and pain in his injured leg; her from PTSD and survivor’s guilt), grief from losing family members, and the pain of families that have broken in the wake of that loss. For a long time, they suffered alone, but not anymore. In each other, they have found a place where it’s safe to fall apart, and a place to begin to heal. They have learned that, with each other, it’s okay to not be okay. 

MS: It’s nice. I like your scent.

KD: What’s so good about the smell of sweat?

MS: Your sweat smells different. It’s nice.  

KD: That’s some unique taste you’ve got there. You’ve completely fallen for me, haven’t you?

MS: Mm.

It’s hard to articulate exactly what it is about this exchange that I like so much. Part of it is the purely physical aspect of it. Each person has their own unique scent, and to Moon Soo, Kang Doo’s scent is calming, comforting, safe - because that’s who Kang Doo is to her. The other part is how comfortable these two are with each other. They’re straightforward in their affection for one another, secure in the knowledge that the other will accept them. 

MS: I’m not going to go home tonight. I don’t want to. 

KD: Don’t, then. Stay with me. 

MS: I...really hate myself.

KD: Then I’ll just have to like you that much more!

MS: I want to run away.

KD: Sure, why the hell not. Where do you want to go?

MS: I don’t know. I’ve never tried.

KD: Let’s go anywhere.

MS: Mm.

Kang Doo is masterfully written and acted. Somehow he manages to be simultaneously gruff and sensitive. He's not especially polite, often dropping honorifics intermittently, regardless of who he’s talking to. Like the drama itself, he won’t offer false comfort or empty assurances, only the simple, unadorned truth. Yet despite being blunt and jaded, he has a gift for finding the words that others need to hear most. He takes after Halmeom that way. 

Moon Soo doesn’t want to go home - Stay with me.

Moon Soo hates herself - I’ll just like you that much more.

Moon Soo wants to run away - Just say the word. 

The other line that really got me was Moon Soo’s ‘I don’t know. I’ve never tried.’ Unlike Kang Doo, who has lived by resigning himself to his misery, provoking it even, by lashing out when he’s at his lowest, Moon Soo has lived suppressing herself, carrying on with her life as best as possible, never acknowledging her pain or allowing herself to grieve. Kang Doo drowned in his pain. Moon Soo suffocated hers. It is only with each other that they are finally able to begin to breathe again. 

As Kang Doo said to Joo Won, ‘I was a guy who only ever had to make it through the day. But after meeting Moon Soo...I’m curious about tomorrow. I look forward to it.’ Moon Soo gives Kang Doo hope; a reason to get up in the morning. She makes him want to truly live instead of just getting by. She makes surviving worth the pain. And for Moon Soo, Kang Doo draws out the emotions that she has spent so long repressing. He teaches her to let herself not be okay, to let out her emotions, to work through her pain instead of denying it. If she needs to run away, then fine - he’s going with her. 

MS: I thought you’d left. 

KD: Where would I go without you? / As if I would leave you behind. 

Kang Doo’s line is tricky to translate from Korean, as it contains both of the above sentiments equally. Once again, simple words, yet they mean so much.

KD: What?

MS: What would have happened if you hadn’t been there?

KD: As if. I’m right here, aren’t I? 

Because where else would Kang Doo be but by her side? (I’m not going to lie, as much as I love these lines, they still give me residual anxiety. After ep. 14 aired and we got the Preview Of Death, I started tallying up all the lines that either foreshadowed his death or survival, and these were both dangerously in the ‘death’ category.)

MS: I remember seeing you...in that place...I remember thinking I was glad I wasn’t alone, that you were there with me. 

KD: I thought the same. 

MS: But I don’t remember anything else. We were together, so why did we only just meet now? Tell me.You remember everything.

KD: [After considering her for a long moment] Just leave the things you can’t remember be. If you can’t remember, it’s because there’s no need for you to.  

MS: But that’s just me making myself feel better. (literally “comfortable”)

KD: Why, would you rather we both be uncomfortable together? Isn’t it better for at least one person to be at ease?

This is the first time that they’re able to talk about the collapse openly with one another, at least to a certain extent. Kang Doo decides that Moon Soo’s peace of mind is more important than her remembering. Back when Kang Doo and Moon Soo had been recently reacquainted, Kang Doo, unsettled that Moon Soo apparently had no memory of him or the collapse, had asked Halmeom which is right: ‘ignorance is bliss’ or ‘knowledge is power.’ At the time, he had felt that it was unfair that he had to live haunted by the traumatic memory of the collapse while she remained (seemingly) blissfully ignorant. Now he knows better. He’s seen firsthand that, just as Halmeom said, ‘Just because someone cries louder doesn’t mean they’re in more pain. How would you know if that person’s mind is at peace?’ 

Because the memory is painful, he keeps it to himself.

’Thank goodness...that you, at least, are okay.’

MS: Why do you always take my side?

KD: Are you dumb? It’s because I like you.

MS: I like you too. I like you so much that I wonder...if it’s okay for me to be this way.

KD: It’s okay. That’s the only way it’s okay. Because if it hadn’t been for that incident...no doubt...everything would have been fine. That’s why...we have to work even more diligently...more than anyone...to be happy. 

Where to begin? There’s the simple but profound fact that Kang Doo will always stand by her and take her side. Because he loves her. Then there’s the heartbreaking fact that Moon Soo’s survivor’s guilt makes her doubt her right to be happy. Most importantly, for the first time, Kang Doo is expressing his resolve to be happy - something that he had completely given up on. Not only that, he’s including Moon Soo in that resolve. And finally, true to the characters, to the drama, and to life, there’s no magical ‘happily ever after’ here. Kang Doo knows, and Moon Soo too, that happiness isn’t easy - you have to work at it, and keep working at it. There is happiness in small and simple things, but happiness itself is anything but small and simple.

KBS 수목드라마 ‘경성스캔들(2007)’ 감상

 한줄평 : 그냥 차송주 최고 브라보 차송주가 다 해먹자!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    얼마 전에 트위터에서도 잠깐 적었는데, 정말 이런 작품을 왜 이제서야 알게 된 것인지 통탄을 금할 수가 없었다. 사실 고1 ��, TV 채널 돌리다가 나여경이랑 선우완 키스신만 보고 ‘시대극을 가장한 연애물인가 보군~’ 이러면서 지나쳤는데... Wooooow 이런 엄청난 위장술(?)을 숨기고 있었다니.. 역시 위장으로 시작해서 위장으로 끝나는 드라마.   물론 페미니스트로서 거슬리는 부분이나 짜임새가 부실하다 싶은 부분은 있었다. 혁명을 가장한 혐애 전선이나 차송주가 코르셋 낭낭한 모습으로 나오는 건 차치하고서라도,

‘나만 따라와/나만 믿어’ 하면서 선우완이 나여경의 손목 끌고 가는 장면이나 차 안에다가 강제로 밀어 넣는 장면이 너무 많다. 한국 멜로의 고질적인 문제점. 저게 또 👉남성의 박력👈으로 치장돼서 소비되는 건 덤으로 또 문제점.

강인호의 북간도로 팔려간 여동생, 이수현의 가족이 북간도로 쫓겨가듯 이주하면서 헤어진 여동생, 독립투사 나여경과 악랄한 종로서 순사 이강구도소싯적 동네 오누이었다... 등등 ‘안타깝고 불쌍하고 챙겨주고 싶은 국민 여동생’ 이미지 좀 그만 소환했으면... 결국 앞에 나서서 멋지게 총 들고 싸우는 건 다 남자 캐릭터이며 왕자님 역할도 다 그들이다.

배우 한지민 씨의 나여경, 정말 새로운 시도였고 멋지고 강단 있었다. 곳곳마다 매력이 넘쳐흘렀음. 어찌 보면 극 중에서 제일 강인한 캐릭터가 아닐까, 란 생각도 들고... 다만, 스테레오 타입의 ‘참한 야학 선생님’ 내지 ‘전면전에 나서지 (못) 않는 지략과 교육적인 도덕성을 겸비한’ 이미지는 그대로 남은 채 변형된 캐릭터라서 조금 아쉬웠다. 그리고 이 때문에 남성 캐릭터들이 왕자님 역할로 짜잔, 주목받게 되는 것도 좀 껄끄러웠고.... 더군다나 강지환이 성폭행 관련사건으로 구속되면서 이 작품은 영영 영업하기 어려워졌다. 송주가 워낙 뛰어난 여캐이기도 하고, 후반부 가면서 짠내 나는 송주 X 수현 라인으로 흘러가서 인진 몰라도 메인 캐릭터인데, 다소 주객전도된 느낌을 받기도 했다. 전반적인 이야기 ��개나 인물 비중을 고려한 안배는 좋았는데, 덕만과 미실이 자꾸 생각난달까ㅋㅋㅋ

애물단 보안 왤케 허술하냐ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 대부분의 주요 인물들은 강인호가 프락치로서 고뇌하는 부분에서 이미 눈치채고 있었겠지만, 그래도 납득이 안 되는 부분.

  이수현은 남자치고 보기 드문 괜찮은 캐릭터이다. 예전부터 배우 류진에 대한 호감도가 있기도 했고. 류진 특유의 딕션 때문에 더 엘리트 한 이미지가 돋보였던 듯. 세상에, 서동요의 사택기루 때도 밀정으로 그 고생을 하더니만 결국 송주랑도 이어지질 못 하는구려 자네...

 비슷한 짠내나는 인물로 작신아의 주하민 검사가 떠오르는데, 어쨌거나 굉장히 설득력 있는 인물이었음. 송주가 죽었을 때, 나도 패닉이었다. 개인적인 일이 겹쳐서 그런 것도 있지만, 이 정도로 몰입해서 아파하고 느낄 수 있다니. 여성 서사의 힘인가, 라는 생각도 들었다. 배우 한고은 씨의 연기는 두말할 것도 없이 너무 감동이었고... 그전까지 <사랑과 ��망>에서의 미자가 많이 남아있었는데, 우아하고 고상한 이미지는 그대로 가져가면서 송주의 저돌적이고 비상한 머리까지 어우러져서 매력이 배가 되었다. (송주에리...)

  그리고 이수현더러 ‘당신이 안전해질 때까지 어쩌고 하면서 이빨 깔 땐 언제고 결국 송주도 못 지켰잖아!! 이놈아!!!’ 이랬는데, N 회차로 보다 보니까 인물들 하나하나에 진심으로 몰입하고 공감하면서 보게 되었다.  특히... 송주랑 수현과의 그 관계... 나여경 X 선우완을 볼 때는, 진짜 전형적인 트랜디 연애물 같다는 생각밖에 안 들었는데, 이 두 사람은...되게 섬세한 감정의 결을 잘 포착했다는 생각이 들었다. 1:1 연인 관계라고 하기도 어렵고, 단순한 동지라고 하기도 뭐하고 상사와 부하라고 하기도 뭐 하고... 안타까운 두 사람. (월향님은 비혼주의자이나, 왜 합방씬에서 많은 팬들이 좌절했는 지 알 것만 같았다(...)) 덧붙여 드라마 배경 특유의 위장과 가면이 추가되면서 벌어지는 그 오묘한 무언가. 색색깔의 애물단 공동체ㅋㅋㅋㅋ송주의 조직화 및 친화력 스킬은 혀를 내두를 정도였다.  게다가 맨 처음에는 나도 고지식하게 ‘주인공들도 그나마 지식인이나 중산층이니까 연애하는 장면이 나오는 거지. 대부분의 조선 현실은 군함도 같았을 텐데.’라고 보았는데, 오히려 개화기 당시의 격동적인 문화충돌의 순간과 다양한 풍경을 가감 없이 담았달��.

  선우환의 오버액션도 (이때, 작신아에서 천재인이 ‘빼액’ 거리는 게 여기서부터 비롯된 걸 직감했다ㅋ), 차송주의 ‘그대’라는 2인칭 대명사도, 지라시 3인방도 오글거리지 않고 잘 녹아낼 수 있었던 게, 연장선상에서 진중하면서도 코믹한 작품의 균형감각을 잃지 않게 해줬던 것 같다. 그래서 시대상과 캐릭터는 더 입체적으로 부각되는, 작품의 최대 장기로 발돋움할 수 있었던 게 아닌지. 소설 <경성애사> 는 읽어보지 못했는데, 송주와 수현은 드라마를 통해 다시 태어난 인물이라고 들었다. 역시나 진수완 작가는 신의 한 수였다. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

  예전에 함께 활동하던 선배들은 아마도 ‘친일파를 미화하고 있다.’,‘푼수 같은 사치코도 일본인인 걸 기억해야 한다.’ 라고 생각할 수도 있겠다. 그런데 만약 그렇다면, 너무 단편적인 판단이라는 생각이 든다. 실제 노조나 단체에서도 ‘좋은 사람’이지만, 집에서는 가사일 1도 안 거느리는 가부장적인 사람의 경우도 허다했고, 변절자도 존재했고, 대중을 향한 💋이빨 사랑👅에 그치는 경우도 많았으니까. 그처럼 인간 군상은 다양한데... 여성의 입장에서만 보더라도 나혜석이 친일파냐, 아니냐 하는 논쟁도 너무 무의미하고... 지라시 3인방도 처음엔 ‘염병~~ 여경이가 장난감이냐 꼴값하네‘ 이랬는데 볼수록 작가님이 감초처럼 잘 배치해두었구나,라는 생각이 들었다. 미운 정(?) 은 이래서 무서운 것인가(...)

  결정적으로 어떻게 투쟁해나가야 하는지, 어떤 삶을 살아야 하는지 중요한 의문을 던져줘서 좋은 작품이었다. 이래서 나의 감상 리스트엔 마이너스럽고 철학적인 작품들만 즐비한 것인가(...) 좌우지간 보면 볼수록 애착이 가는 작품. 진수완 작가의 필력 덕분인지 최근 나오는 드라마들 보다 훨씬 더 낫다고 생각한다. 아~~ 본방 때 사수했으면 더 좋았을 것을...!!! 잘 건졌다!
