i finished hunt (2022) and i thought it was quite heavy but overall, i enjoyed it. while watching, i did wonder if people who weren’t familiar with what happened politically in south korea in the 1980s would be able to follow the storyline, and apparently, i read on wikipedia that ljj was also concerned about this and he decided to re-edit the movie. but i think “thanks” to their current future former (?) president declaring martial law, most people would already know that the country was once ruled by a dictator and that should be enough to understand the background of the movie.

for no particular reason i want everyone to know that the movie centers around an assassination attempt on a president lol.

lastly, because i’m watching for the plot…

우리나라의 80년대 격동기를 배경으로 한 영화다. 누군가가 누군가를 속이고 또 속이는 첩보물이다. 가볍게 보기 좋았다.

<Hunt>'s Actress, Go Younjung, "A Bold Challenge"

"The world is changing, I won't live like an old man." At first glance, Jo Yoojung (played by Go Younjung) seems like an ordinary college student, but the more you look into her, the more curious you become. She can’t stand injustice, speaks up, and helps her student activist friends, but why doesn’t she participate in the demonstrations herself? Why does Park Pyeong-Ho (played by Lee Jungjae) hover around Jo Yoo-jung and take care of her like a father? Jo Yoo-jung plays an important role in understanding the narrative of <Hunt>, just like the agents of the National Security Planning Agency, Go Yoon-jung, who appeared in the dramas <Sweet Home>, <Law School>, and <Alchemy of Souls>, successfully made her first film debut with a bold attitude that makes it hard to believe she’s a rookie.

Q : New actors sometimes feel unfamiliar with seeing themselves on the big screen. How was it?

A : I saw <Top Gun:Maverick> a while ago. It was the first movie I saw in the theater after filming <Hunt>, I can see that Tom Cruise's face become really big on the screen. I thought I could also appear like that. But when I actually watched the movie, it wasn't that weird. I think it's because there were more scenes where two people talked or there were multiple people, rather than close-ups. I actually liked it. (Laughs)

Q : Director Lee Jungjae made a casting offer after watching <Sweet Home>. Both Yuri from <Sweet Home> and Jo Yoo-jung from <Hunt> have something in common: they are characters who don't express their emotions well.

A : Yuri in <Sweet Home> is a quiet character. However, as she is the Gil-Seop's (played by Kim Gapsoo) caregiver, she reacts a lot to his words and actions. The director (Lee Jungjae) said that he liked how she was able to focus and not miss out on such expressions even though she was a rookie.

Q : Director Lee Jungjae said at a press conference that “Go Younjung is an actress who comes up with a lot of ideas.” Actor Heo Sungtae also said, “Go Younjung is an actress who prepares thoroughly.” I’m curious about how you prepares for your work and comes up with ideas.

A : Actually, rather than coming up with ideas, I had a lot of questions because I was curious. For example, in the torture scene, I think deeply about whether I should be helpless like a normal college student or give the impression of enduring, so that way I couldn’t help but ask a lot of questions (to the director). The director combined his and Park Pyeong-Ho’s perspectives to tell me stories from various views. He would ask my opinion first and then said, “That’s good, but from the director’s perspective, I wish Yoo-Jung had been a little more aggressive.” That’s why I can understood better.

Q : Do you read the script carefully and then check any questions you have?

A : That's true, and I think it's important not to forget the image and overall flow of the script when I first read it. Since I end up watching it mainly based on the scene where I appear and my lines, I try to keep in mind where and to what extent this scene fits into the overall work.

Q : I guess you tend to approach your work from an image perspective.

A : Yes. Is it because I majored in art? (Laughs)

Q : The level of torture in the movie is quite intense. Was it difficult to film?

A : Before filming, I constantly simulated how I would act, but I don’t know what my co-star will do on set. In other hand, I also can’t just ask my senior, “How are you going to hit me?” I went in almost immediately without much rehearsal, and I didn’t have to try hard to immerse myself on set. The makeup effect felt real, and the lights on the set were just right for me. Senior Heo Sungtae has a low voice tone, and when he spoke in that tone, I immediately felt intimidated. The torture scene was the one I really wanted to do well. I wanted the audience to think, “An innocent student is being tortured like that,” and in order for it to be a point that would stimulate Park Pyeong-ho, the scene had to be really brutal. Fortunately, I’m glad that it turned out well.

Q : Your profile photo released at the beginning of your debut was a hot topic. You got attention because of your visual, but looking back, your acting has been solid since your debut work, <He is Psychometric>. Your major also wasn't acting, so when did you start preparing to become an actor?

A : I did ballet for a long time and my major was contemporary art. I got calls from many companies after I modeled for the <University Tomorrow> magazine when I was a student. I had been sitting and drawing for a long time and I don’t have the style of being outwardly or having a lot of talent, so I declined at first. But I met with the companies that contacted me last and met my current CEO. After that, I continued to model and took acting lessons. I took lessons for about 6 months and failed the final audition for the movie. That’s when it really hit me and I thought I needed to do this seriously. So I took a leave of absence from school to go on a training program. (Laughs) There were many things I realized while learning acting, like, “This is the kind of person I am.” I liked the process of realizing my own shortcomings and improving them.

Q : In the process of discovering your shortcomings, you must have also discovered your own strengths.

A : Yes, I got compliments a lot for my nice voice. My family members all have low voices, so I never thought of it as something special, but when I saw pictures or videos, they said they didn't expect my voice to be like this. So I thought it could be my own uniqueness and strength.

Q : You consistently upload stills from movies you enjoy watching on social media, including the previously mentioned <Top Gun: Maverick >. It’s hard to figure out your tastes, but what kind of movies do you enjoy watching, like <Once Upon a Time in Hollywood>, <Brokeback Mountain>, <Sicario: Day of the Soldado>, and <The Best Offer>?

A : Whenever an actor I like release a project, I watch them unconditionally. If I think that person is cool, I dig into their entire filmography. For example, I watch Leonardo DiCaprio's movies in order, from his early work <What's Eating Gilbert Grape >, to his latest work. I really enjoy watching them all at once, and I like to see the changes that an actor goes through as he ages. Once I've read through an actor's filmography, I can't get away from that actor for a while. (Laughs)

Q : Your next work is the drama <Moving> .

A : I took on the role of Jang Hui-soo and finished filming 3-4 weeks ago. It was a long journey that lasted almost a year. There were actors my age and quite a few actors a year or two younger than me, so I enjoyed filming as if I was going to school.
