“That’s okay for now,” he said, placing a comforting hand in your knee. “But remember what your doctor said. Fluid intake is the best thing to help you recover.”

“I know,” you sniffled, scrubbing at your eyes with your fists. “It hurts so bad. It feels like I have strep, but I can’t take even take antibiotics for it. My ears hurt too.”

Charlie let out a low hum as he leaned over the center console to turn on your seat heater. “We’ll pick up some tylenol on the way home. Anything else you want?”

“No.”

“Anything to make you happier?” Charlie pouted as his eyes scanned your weak body.

“I just want to go home,” you said shakily, pulling the blanket up to your chin.

“When we get home, I can make you some jello, assuming that sounds good to you. Then we can lay down on the couch and watch movies. Would that make you happier?”

You nodded as you reclined your seat as far as it could go in order to legally drive home.

Charlie gave your knee one final squeeze before moving his hand to the steering wheel and starting the car. “Anything else before we get going, sweetheart?”

You shook your head contentedly, allowing your eyelids to fall shut. The gentle whir of the engine and the sensation of being inside a moving car lulled you to a half-asleep state.

The soothing movements of the car and the sound of Charlie’s humming took you to a place where there was no pain or discomfort temporarily.
