My small (@bunnnybcy ) has ARFID, which makes it very difficult for him to get much nutrition, and I'm always trying things to make health accessible to him. One way to make "scary" foods accessible is to make them cute or baby-like. This recipe is sort of a "base model," a warm and sweet treat that can be altered later to increase their fruit & whole grain consumption.
Equipment you'll need:
Saucepan
Stirrer
Measuring cups
Stove or hotpad
Blender
Sippy cup or reusable pouches (Link to reusable pouch example)
Refrigerator for storage
Sweet Cinnamon Formula Recipe ð
Ingredients:
1 cup + 1 cup milk or plant milk of choice (we used vanilla soy milk) ð¥
1/2 cup plain rolled oats ð¥£
1 tsp dark brown sugar, or to taste*
1 tsp honey, or to taste ð¯
Cinnamon, to taste
Vanilla extract, to taste
Steps:
ð¥ Heat the first cup of milk in your saucepan on the stove. Turn the heat up to medium, or medium-high if you're impatient.
ð¯ Stir in the brown sugar and honey, and continue to stir frequently until the milk starts to lightly boil.
𥣠Stir in the 1/2 cup of rolled oats, and turn down the heat to medium, if it isn't already there.
ð¥ Stir frequently until the liquid is mostly absorbed, about 5-8 minutes. (The longer you cook it, the smoother your end product will be, which is important for ARFID smalls.)
ðïž Take off the heat, and let cool for a bit, until you're confident that it won't melt your blender lol.
Pour the oatmeal into your blender, add 1/4 cup milkð¥, and blend until smooth. Check the consistency, and continue adding milk in 1/4 cup amounts until your small approves of the texture. This would also be a convenient time to add more cinnamon, vanilla, honeyð¯, or sugar, if they feel the taste is lacking.
Pour into pouches or sippy cups.
You can store leftover formula in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Notes for other carers of little ones with ARFID:
If your small one will tolerate it, adding nuts or seeds during step 1 will yield a more nutritious result, but some may not blend down. Chia seeds, for example, will remain visible and will feel like poppyseeds, which may be off-putting to someone with ARFID, even though they don't taste like anything.
Always remember to introduce new tastes and textures slowly, and allow them to try a new thing multiple times on different days if they're unsure about it. Unsure may just mean unfamiliar, and it'll take them a number of attempts to acquire a taste for it. Uncertainty is a good sign of a future "yes", but don't push them to finish a serving of something they're on the fence about; the pressure may turn it into a "no". Instead, give them the option of putting the rest away for later, and after some time, when they're ready, encourage them to try it again.

Eddieâs not usually one for cuteness and fluff - heâd normally take someone to The Hideout, or spend time in his van out by Loverâs Lake. Not because he doesnât want to, more because he doesnât know how, and canât take the risk of embarrassing himself.
But with you, itâs different.
Before you, he reckons he wouldnâtâve known how to be romantic if his life depended on it. But now, heâs finding he loves to do things to make you laugh, to make you blush, even just to make you smile, and he doesnât even care if he makes himself look like an idiot.
So today, heâs packed up as much of a romantic picnic as he can manage. Heâs borrowed a basket and cooler from Steve, along with some tips on what to pack, after he admitted he was just going to get Twinkies and chips from Melvaldâs. Steveâs even let him raid his fridge for a few things.
Heâs shaken out the blankets from the back of his van, and has brought a few throw pillows from the trailer, so youâll have something comfortable to sit on. Thereâs camping plates and cutlery, usually reserved for Wayneâs fishing trips, so you donât have to pick things out of packets, and heâs bought your favourite soda. Heâs even folded kitchen paper into bird-like shapes, so they stand up on their own - fancy.
You think heâs just taking you to the local park, maybe collecting something from Bennyâs on the way, but he surprises you, swinging the van along one of the exit roads to a âsecret spotâ outside of town.
Itâs a pretty meadow, down a quiet lane, filled with tall grass and wildflowers.
He takes your hand and helps you down from the cab with a polite âmy dearâ, and insists on carrying everything himself, even though you offer to help (and, as you suspected he might, he almost trips twice).
He chooses a patch of meadow thatâs more grass than flowers, explaining he âdoesnât want to hurt themâ, and lays a blanket out for you both before opening up the cooler.
You canât believe heâs gone to all this effort. Thereâs cold meats and cheeses, small tomatoes, carrot batons, berries, nuts, apple slices and a few grapes. And because he canât forego the snack food, thereâs also pretzels, breadsticks and, yes, chips.
You think itâs wonderful. You think heâs wonderful. And the two of you spend an idyllic afternoon snacking and chatting and laughing and holding each otherâs hands.
Once most of the food is gone, you help him to pack away the leftovers and encourage him to lie down, insisting he deserves a rest after all heâs done today.
He smiles softly at you, and says he will, but,
âOnly if I can choose the best pillow in the state.â
Confused, you look around at the worn cushions heâs brought from the trailer, and he smirks as he drops down onto his elbows and wriggles himself backwards to place his messy mop into your lap. He twists his head back and forth a couple of times, settling, humming to himself, mumbling,
âMmmm, definitely the best pillow in the state. No wait, the country!â
You chuckle down at him as he peeps up at you with those coffee brown eyes you love so much, and run your fingers through his bangs.
You enjoy the weight and warmth of him resting against you as you talk about everything and nothing, and Eddie begins to doze in the afternoon sun. He stirs a little as he feels you periodically lean to one side, but thinks nothing of it.
He feels you playing with his hair again, and thinks he might just be in paradise. Surely, thereâs no reason why the two of you couldnât stay like this forever?
But then something unfamiliar tickles his cheek, and he opens one eye to see you leaning over him, examining a bright yellow buttercup before you cock your head sideways and appraise him, squinting a little.
Placing it into his hair between a poppy and a daisy, he sees the tip of your tongue poke out as you adjust it before leaning back and admiring your handiwork.
He brings a hand up to his hairline, gently and carefully so as not to dislodge anything, and discovers he has quite an array of blooms adorning his waves.
You reach into your bag and pull out your Polaroid camera, wanting to capture his beautiful visage. Taking a couple of snaps, you place them face down on the blanket to develop as Eddie gleefully makes grabby hands, wanting to take a picture of his own. He hadnât even realised youâd brought it, and heâs not missing this opportunity.
You wonât know until the picture develops, but the sun thatâs now setting behind you is giving you a glorious halo that Eddie thinks makes you look like a heavenly being. He decides that if he can capture even a tenth of your ethereal beauty in a photo, heâll keep it close to his heart forever.

Optional ending:
Just as youâre thinking this is definitely the best picnic, and possibly the best afternoon, of your life, one of the daisies bends a little, and something small drops from one of the petals.
Itâs a tiny green caterpillar, and it tickles him as it squirms against Eddieâs temple.
Bats, rats, skulls and devils donât bother this metal-loving freak, but real-life creepy crawlies? Thatâs a whole different story, and a massive nope.
He leaps up, thrashing wildly at the beautiful display youâd made, the colourful petals and bright green stalks flying everywhere and showering you both like confetti as his feet get tangled up in the blanket and he squeals,
âAAAAAHH!! Bug!! BUG!!â
