More horses! (and bat)
Had the urge to return to the roots as it were and draw some horses. Don't get to draw them terribly often despite having characters that have them but I made a point of just doing it anyway. Mounts can be an important thing to many adventurers and I love them dearly.

Adrik: Why I Love him and I Guess Netflix Thoughts?
(Regular Text)
Context: I read the Grisha Trilogy when I was 14/15 and had a bit of a book crush on Adrik. Why? He was also that age, wanted to be older and act older, and was one of the only disabled characters I’d read before.
So yeah, when Netflix made shadow and bone, I thought to myself: Will they put Adrik in the show? He’s a major side character and they added a lot of new characters, so a part of me just thought he’d be written out.
Then season two…
And not only did we get Adrik, they made him hot AND the actor was really good. That was honestly the dream. (Huge shoutout to Alistair Nwachukwu)
Adrik and his disability:
In the books and show, Adrik loses his arm due to the Darkling’s shadow monsters. Now, part of why I love Adrik is because he has to adapt to a new way of doing a skill he’s been proficient at seemingly his whole life. We get to see some ups and downs of him trying to use his powers, but we also get to see his determination to keep trying to get better. They’re in the middle of a war, and he’s adamant about not being left behind. It’s an interesting point of his character, I like it.
Now, in the show, we see a less confident Adrik. But, we still see him try and adapt, just differently.
This is where the undefined and somewhat loose magic system is a little hard to talk about. This magic system has been built up as always needed two hands/arms to control. But, book!Adrik figures out how to do so with only one arm. In the books, this is seen as some never-before-done feat. Now, shadow and bone takes the “two-handed rule” very seriously. We see show!Adrik and his sister have to fist bump and control powerful gusts of wind together. This makes for interesting fight scenes, but seemed a bit odd to me as it is established in the first season with an inferni that you can summon with one hand/arm out of commission. (Kaz chapel scene for reference)
But, just like in real life, many disabled people need some help or stability from others to get a task done, when I look at it that way it’s cool. (Though, I did not like how they gave Nadia an arm injury as well, it felt weird to me-—as if the producers thought they couldn’t do that technique with Nadia having her body intact—I don’t know I’d love yalls thoughts on that scene)
Adrik and the show prosthetic:
I hated the Luke Skywalker prosthetic. I knew it was just a glove, it was weird and also seemed to serve no point.
What could have been done if CGI-ing off the actor’s arm was too expensive:
1. Hidden the left arm? And pinned the sleeve to whatever was needed.
2. If that’s a safety hazard, changed the injury to something slightly different. Such as a head/spinal/nerve injury as a result of the shadow attack. (He would still only be squalling with one arm, it may just look stiff as he wouldn’t be able to move/feel it AND this wouldn’t be erasing his disability)
3. Made Adrik disabled from the start? Nothing in his storyline would have been different. You can’t tell me there’s never been a disabled Grisha before.
Conclusion:
I love both portrayals of Adrik, the only parts I hate are the “Netflix-ication” or “Hollywood” erasure of his disability. I think a huge problem with book adaptions are that sometimes sticking to the book limits people’s creativity. People making films have SO MUCH to consider and portray, that they can’t always do. So in the case of Adrik, they wanted amputee!Adrik, and found a great, nondisabled (maybe?) actor to play him. Fine, but they ran out of time and money to keep CGI-ing his arm off. (Literally having disabled actors is so much better but that’s a different discussion) Anyway, so the not-creative team makes the actor a weird glove and say, “Go pretend to be disabled.” It’s a tale as old as time. Is it good disability rep? Not really. Do I still love Adrik? Yes. Did the actor do awesome and do I still respect him? Of course, he’s doing his job and did it well.
I felt the need to make this post as favorite character week pops up. As a bit of an explanation to my love/sorta dislike of Adrik.
Here’s some fanart I found that is a perfect portrayal of what I think of when I think of Adrik:
Tumblr media
Image Description: digital painting of Adrik (portrayed by Alistair Nwachukwu, a black man in his mid-twenties) wearing his blue and silver kefta (coat) with right hand extended forward and his short, left sleeve covering his residual limb is perfectly visible.
I love this piece by @doodlesnoff as this is how show!Adrik SHOULD have looked on-screen but didn’t.
Again, this is no hate to the actor. I actually can’t imagine anyone better to play Adrik. His voice, the way he interacted with Alina and Nadia and Genya…he is Adrik. I really hope his acting career is going great.

"You think the you of before would hate me?" Vincent tilted his head, then the other way. "Is there something to hate? Is it my face?" His attempt at levity.
Adrik chuckled and shook his head. He appreciated Vincent's attempts to keep things light, but now was the time to be serious about their
"I cannot ever imagine hating that face," he gave Vincent a lingering kiss and cupped his cheek, "but there is the possibility that I may change- this is the reality. I do not believe I will be that different, but... I do not know what my memories hold."

We Used to be FriENDs - Ch5 Trial Results 3/4
END lived a life at full-throttle, empowered by a hobby that necessitates lightning quick reactions at times and for one’s reflexes to be on point. This might have not been the same situation, but those quick habits came in handy here as one hand darted to the inside of the lab coat she was wearing. She withdrew a gun of her own–Eureka’s railgun, a sleek, square pistol shaped weapon. Two bands of light span the length of the barrel, and the laser sight easily rested on the other’s torso. With a quick action, her hand disengaged the safety and switched the invention on.
Tumblr media
“Adrik! Put the gun down or I swear to fuck I’ll shoot you in return!”
A response was immediate.
“What the fuck— why are you stopping me? Are you insane?! This is the only way! It’s US or THEM,”
Adrik retorted in disbelief.
“And what the FUCK d’you think happens if you gun her down?! D’you think An’s just gonna go ‘damn, oh well’? That’ll fuck over everyone–them, us, and all of our dead friends! Fucking–I don’t wanna have to kill you, man–just put it down!”
END’s heart was racing a mile a minute. There was so much she wanted to say, to reason her way out of this. For the first time in her life, Erika Nitro wanted to wait, to avoid acting. There was just no time.
An, having shot her vision back and forth between the two of them during this exchange, slowly inched her way closer to Calluna, hands still raised. It was harder to tell in the immediate, but she at least wanted to be in the best position possible to shield Calluna if needed.
“... I’m one to hold a grudge.”
An threatened, with less venom than she would normally provide. If nothing else, there was a strong will to survive in that body of her’s.
“Be fucking for real—“ With a gun pointed at Adrik, they’re left with no choice but to slowly lower their aim, one hand raising in the air in defeat as the other placed the gun by their feet. Their movements were shaky, but they complied. “When we all die, you’ll regret this-”
And at once, as soon as the gun Adrik held was no longer pointed towards Calluna, their body jerks before they crumple to the ground with a shout, twitching for a few moments. It only takes a moment to notice the glow that formed on Calluna’s antenna, which was to say… Tazed.
END stared them down until they finally put the gun down. She flinched when they were suddenly zapped–though, thank god, it didn’t look like they'd been murdered for it all.
“Maybe I will,” she answered simply, “but I’ll also regret it if we all die because you killed one of them, too.” She slowly lowered the railgun as well, turning the switch back off but leaving it held in her grip. “I brought this thing here to stop anyone from getting shot, because I’m fucking tired of all of this. I just figured it was Akito who snatched the gun–which, can I just say, fuck Akito for knowing you had that and saying nothing?”
Having heard END’s final speech, An paused to watch her. To process what exactly just happened, with a mixture of both confusion and respect welling up in their chest. They swallowed, their life no longer flashing before their eyes, before they scurried over to the prone Adrik and rummaged through their pockets. An removed their gun from their person, their tablet, and any other belongings they presently carried on their person. Those were no longer things Adrik could be trusted with, after all.
Carrying all of the belongings in her arms like a squirrel prepping to store for the winter, An stored the items behind her podium safely, where they couldn’t be accessed.
Tumblr media
“... Thanks.” An gave a nod to END, just briefly.
Calluna laughs looking at Adrik on the ground, though it doesn’t sound kind.
Tumblr media
“Do you realize what you’ve almost caused, with that lethal injector? Do you realize that the two of us are the only reason the REST of you have a chance at survival? We could easily kill all of you for your own superior sync rates but had planned to make the argument to our father to leave you be? You are a fool, nothing more. None of you were going to be at risk of death with this result.”

"Let your soul rest, for your body and bones will not." ___________
Near the end things didn't look well. It all went sideways so fast when we saw who was left to guard the artifact, Adrik Ironside, a terror of a man whom Ebbor knew well enough having served under him for many years, and a Deathlock who was eager to have new playthings.
One had already fallen and the other two were badly hurt when it was time to retreat, thankfully made possible by promised backup. Adrik was kept more or less at bay but was persistent, he wasn't about to let these people get away easily and was too close for an easy escape. The undead had our mystery friend unable to move and Ebbor wasn't going to leave him behind, so as he pulled him out of the way, he took his space and blocked the doorway, putting himself between his comrades and his former superior.
A valiant effort at a last stand that didn't last as he was struck down by Adrik and dragged off by the Deathlock. But in mustering every last ounce of strength and will he had left, he channeled it into a final assault against the undead that had given them so much grief, striking it down before succumbing to his own injuries and falling into the Shepard's embrace. Hoping what time he gave was enough for the last of them to escape and keep fighting.
Remember the fallen. Remember the heroes.

Disability and neurodiversity in the Grishaverse
With Disability Pride Month, let’s explore the Grishaverse's disability representation. Leigh Bardugo’s experience as a disabled author gives her a unique perspective in writing disabled characters, resulting in an intersectional cast that includes characters with physical disabilities and neurodivergences.
Tumblr media
Kaz Brekker relies on a mobility aid—his infamous crow's head cane—due to a leg injury he sustained as a teenager that left him with a limp and chronic pain. Mobility aid users are usually portrayed as older, meaning Kaz, as a younger character who uses a cane, brings much-needed representation.
Tumblr media
Wylan Van Eck has severe dyslexia. As he describes it, letters get mixed up, unlike music, numbers or equations. However, he excels in math, science, music and art. While there are many types of dyslexia, with differing severity, Wylan’s struggles resonate deeply with many dyslexic fans.
Tumblr media
Bardugo also confirmed writing Jesper Fahey as having ADHD symptoms. His energetic nature makes him restless and impulsive, potentially contributing to his gambling addiction. He often spins or fidgets with his revolvers and rings, which can be interpreted as stimming. Fans with ADHD can relate to Jesper’s trouble focusing and constant need for stimulation.
Tumblr media
Genya Safin suffers from monocular vision due to injuries from a Nichevo'ya attack and wears an eye patch. Her inclusion brings awareness to different types of visual impairments.
Tumblr media
David Kostyk is a brilliant scientist and inventor but has trouble navigating social situations, is often quiet and prefers to keep to himself. He has difficulty maintaining eye contact when overwhelmed and expressing his feelings. David is interpreted as neurodivergent by many fans, which provides further representation to the series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two characters with prosthetic limbs are Adrik Zhabin and the Darkling. Adrik has a prosthetic arm due to an attack by the Darkling’s Nichevo'ya. Ironically, the Darkling lost his hand as well and now uses a prosthetic. Having two characters like this helps normalize limb differences.
Tumblr media
Leigh Bardugo took great care to include neurodivergent and disabled characters in her stories, without them being defined solely by it. They go on adventures, fall in love, make mistakes, save the day—and just happen not to be neurotypical and/or able-bodied.
Because of this, the Grishaverse has some of the best disability representation in the fantasy genre. Not only does this kind of positive representation help similar fans feel seen, it also helps to destigmatize differences, showing we are all human. Happy Disability Pride Month!
