He appreciated the latitude that she was affording him and chose to drop the matter as well, now that it was clear that he hadn’t offended her by presuming that she was a student. Besides, he was far more interested in hearing what she had to say about her own profession, her journey to becoming the defender that she was and the fact that she felt as though she struggled to feel like she belonged where she was. It was a feeling that he’d had throughout his life. Academics had always been his calling and Jameson knew that the scholastic lifestyle was in his future. But that didn’t detract from the fact that while he was completing his doctorate, it had been grueling and truly left him wondering if he had what it took to see it through the to end. Perhaps that was why he resonated with her. Though he suspected most would. Feeling lost was a universal experience. “And usually, the mistakes we make end up sorting themselves out in the long run.” He affirmed, thinking of his own mistakes. “They seem insurmountable in the moment. And then a few weeks later, the dust has settled and you’ve adapted to the new situation.” That’s exactly what was happening in his own family. They were each reflecting on what happened with Elora and trying to settle back into a routine of not having her with them.
As she shared her perspective on the law, he nodded with understanding and admiration. “I’m sure in your line of work, you see how the legal system can be unfair time and time again. I might not be a lawyer, but I think all of us play a part in trying to better the system.” His own contribution was in the form of forensic expertise. He’d come in and ensure that wherever evidence could be studied either to convict or exonerate, he did so. And her role was to ensure that the best defense was put forth for her clients. No case was airtight, but they could get as close to that as possible. He laughed when she pointed out that he was philosophical, though he’d noted that about himself as well. “I’m a professor by trade, so it’s probably just hardwired into me to be analytical about everything. Take things more seriously than they need to be taken, you know. I’m Jameson, by the way,” he moved to offer a hand, but both his arms were filled with books. | @robertsameliax
“Mistake who? Never saw you make one” She laughed, shaking her head. Amelia thought that once she left Covington and made something of herself that she would have life figured out but it was the exact opposite. She didn’t know who she was in the world or if she really contributed to something greater. Sure she had won cases that made differences to communities but was it enough? Would it ever be enough? It was a question that had crept in her mind the moment she arrived back home. Had anything changed considering she was back where she started? As he spoke, she couldn’t help but smile finding solace in the fact that he understood exactly what she meant. “I don’t mind the philosophical because you are absolutely right. I think sometimes we get so caught up in this perfect image that we’re meant to be but forget that we’re human and mistakes happen and most of the time we have no flipping idea of what we’re doing. We’re just trying to survive, you know?” Surviving has been all that Amelia has known and she has gotten pretty good at it in the last thirty years.
“I absolutely agree with you on that. I think it’s an ever fluctuating aspect of life and sometimes we don’t know everything. I think that’s part of the reason why I like law so much is the fact that it is ever changing but I can also see the frustration of how the law is not fair to everyone as it should be. There are just so many facets that are still being understood and my goal is to help better the system in any way that I can.” Amelia listened to him, a smile forming on her face. “I appreciate that. I think you’re right that effort beats everything. So, how did you become so philosophical?”

Parallelized Acquisition of Orbitrap and Astral Analyzers Enables High-Throughput Quantitative Analysis.
Hamish Stewart, Dmitry Grinfeld, Anastassios Giannakopulos, Johannes Petzoldt, Toby Shanley, Matthew Garland, Eduard Denisov, Amelia Peterson, Eugen Damoc, Martin Zeller, Tabiwang N.Arrey, Anna Pashkova, Santosh Renuse, Amirmansoor Hakimi, Andreas Kühn, Matthias Biel, Arne Kreutzmann, Bernd Hagedorn, Immo Colonius, Adrian Schütz, Arne Stefes, Ankit Dwivedi, Daniel Mourad, Max Hoek, Bastian Reitemeier, Philipp Cochems, Alexander Kholomeev, Robert Ostermann, Gregor Quiring, Maximilian Ochmann, Sascha Möhring, Alexander Wagner, André Petker, Sebastian Kanngiesser, Michael Wiedemeyer, Wilko Balschun, Daniel Hermanson, Vlad Zabrouskov, Alexander Makarov and Christian Hock.
Pre-print, 2023
Summary/Figures:
Fig 1- schematic- astral uses orbitrap as intact mass analyzer, then ions are routes/guided through multipole and octapole into a high pressure region, then a low pressure region where they are ejected into the astral analyzer. ions then move back along the mirrors until they are fully reflected and detected i nthe front of the analyzer
key feature is that the high pressure chamber allows pooling of ions at the same time as that the low pressure chamber is ejecting them into the astral, enables much faster times than other mass analyzer setups
fig 2- timing schema for each section- 4 packets of ions can be in processing at once b/c steps are so fast but also separate
fig 3- MS1 in orbitrap can be done t the same time as MS2 in the astral
fig 4- resolution remains high across a wide mass range and at two different ion injection levels, mass shift remains low and consistent at wide mass range and two different ion injection levels. would be useful to see orbitrap data overlaid on this.
fig 5- mass jitter across m/z range is mostly consistent, it gets slightly higher. 3sigma jitter seems to basically be the 3x the standard deviation of the measured mas for the handful of peaks plotted here, so jitter is just a measure of deviation, (?)
fig 6- mass shift of a specified calibration peak over 70 hours is within 1m/z shift, text states that this was compared to an intemrittent internal calibration, but it is unclear how that would be done simultaneously and all of the data points for both masses are continuous
fig 7- the correction for temperature based on the internal calibrant keep mass error much closer to 0
fig 8- higher accumulation time in the in the trap results in lower scan rate- this is because a greater proportion of the duty cycle is occupied by ion accumulation leaving less total time for scans, however if the accumulation time is left constant then the scan frequency is constant
fig 9- comparison of ion countrs between corrected and uncorrected data, based on astral coutnrs relative to orib counts, where even the uncorrected astral counts are 100%- 150% higher
fig 10- astral spectra include more peaks for the same # of measured ions of a given compound, also shows that resolution values for the astral stay around 100k but orbi resolution is much lower
fig 11- protein group and peptide identification increase with experiment time
fig 12- proteome mixtures can be accurately identified using the astral, CV values for protein ID's are very low
fig 13- similar experiment, but with DIA on hela cells. Successfully identified many peptides and proteins both with and without libraries, increasing with loading mass (these are expected results)
Questions:
resolving power vs resolution?- resolution is the ability to separate peaks in a mass spectra (describes the peak themselves), whereas resolving power is the ability of the mass spec to separate the peaks (a property/parameter),
relation of repetition rate (Hz), voltage, resolving power, m/z
are the Asymmetric Ion Mirrors actual glass mirrors, or are they some other kind of "mirror"?- they are metallic, the "mirroring" is achieved via voltage
scintillator- type of mass detector that can measure ionization, traditionally used for radiation, this is a portion of the mass detection system in the astral
hermetically sealed- sealing to prevent both gases and moisture from entering (not the same as airtight)
jitter- noise within a specified domain (?)
mass dependent correction (reference 40)-
Why does an orbitrap require 10 ions for a peak to be measured but the astral can measure single ions?
Why start with the Astral at 500% aGC target? What experiments went into determining this was a good level
How was data for figure 6 and 7 collected?
Does instrument resolution refer to the average of all the resolution of each individual peak?

Literature meme: Genres [1/3] ‣ Detective fiction
↳ Detective fiction is a subgenre of crime fiction and mystery fiction in which an investigator or a detective—either professional, amateur or retired—investigates a crime, often murder. The detective genre began around the same time as speculative fiction in the mid-nineteenth century. The first detective story was “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” by Edgar Allan Poe, published in April 1841. Poe’s fictional French detective, C. Auguste Dupin, appeared in two other stories, “The Mystery of Marie Roget” (1845) and “The Purloined Letter” (1845).
Although women weren't allowed to enter the police force in the UK until around the time of World War I, there were female private detectives in the UK in the late 1800s, around the same time Sherlock Holmes was galavanting around London, solving mysteries. And even before that, authors were writing women detectives, of both the amateur and professional variety, into their fictions. Wilkie Collins's Anne Rodway in "The Diary of Anne Rodway" was one of the first female detectives in literature, amateur or otherwise [x].
More women detectives:
Mrs. Paschal from Revelations of a Lady Detective by W.S. Hayward.
Dora Myrl: Lady Detective by M. McDonnell Bodkin.
Dorcas Dene, Detective: The Complete Adventures by George Robert Sims.
The Amelia Butterworth Mysteries by Anna Katherine Green.
Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Her first appearance was in the short story "The Tuesday Night Club" (1927). Her first appearance in a full-length novel was in The Murder at the Vicarage in 1930.
Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver. Her first appearance was in Grey Mask (1928).
Lady Phryne Fisher, the main character in Kerry Greenwood's series of detective novels. Her first appearance was in Cocaine Blues (1989).
Molly Robertson-Kirk from Lady Molly of Scotland Yard (1910), a collection of short stories written by Baroness Orczy.
The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective (1893) by Catherine Louisa Pirkis.

sooo... unpopular supernatural opinion and honest thoughts on c*ckles?👀
shout out to the three separate anons who immediately asked this, mvps for wanting to decrease my follower count... we love a bit of blood sport in the arena
ok wildly varying levels of unpopular from mild to flaming hot:
meg’s character retcon is bad and I strongly dislike megstiel
I have not read The Most Famous Destiel Fic for more than one paragraph because it was too OOC but literally everything I know about it makes me feel like it should not a) hold the status it does and b) be a destiel fic
jack is one of the best things they ever did for the show and I’m glad he wasn’t a ‘baby’ when we meet him. everyone who acts like season 1-5 is the only ‘canon’ they accept has not fallen in love with jack which means either they have bad opinions or they haven’t watched the whole show
as previously stated, all fifteen seasons of supernatural should be considered canon*. unfortunately
lisa is boring however not as boring as amelia, which is a truly low bar. anyway I refuse to love all the women on supernatural for the sake of feminism because some of them just aren’t very interestingly written
you know how sometimes the fandom hive minds something into The Only Interpretation when that isn’t necessarily true? that but with the famous boner scene in 8.07, that dean is for sure hiding a boner is weirdly fixed despite that not actually being totally clearly the case**. like it’s fun as a joke but we all act like that is gospel truth sometimes when it’s just him being uncomfortable with something.
that demon!dean arc was cut short annoys me on a narrative level BUT frankly the writers seemed totally unable to do anything interesting with it anyway so if it was just going to be a whole season of jensen ackles acting slightly meaner than usual... that’s fine
I strongly think destiel fandom should look to carly rae jepsen rather than taylor swift for their pop girl lyrics taylor swift is the WRONG VIBE
I’m sort of grateful that waywards never happened because 1) all the good writers would have left to be on it, 2) there would be no canon destiel and 3) I don’t know if half that cast were particularly strong actors. and the wayward backdoor pilot was really not super interesting or well written. which reminds me,
robert berens episodes are sometimes very bad, and he is probably not the total friend/ally on the finale we all think he is
anael is great conceptually. dunno if that’s unpopular, does anyone hate anael? wish they’d explored her character in a more interesting way, she would have vibed so well with ‘hbo supernatural’ aka season 4-5
while obviously there are times the actors have great ideas and make really valuable contributions to scripts (misha, jensen and jared doing ALL the bookending legwork on 15.18 and 15.20) I do not think the actors should be in charge of their characters: misha would write tragedy (as he basically did), jared did not like saileen, and jensen reversed a line about dean reading the ‘game of thrones’ series in a robbie thompson episode to make dean sound dumber rather than unexpectedly smart.
ok that’s enough for now! re; cockles: to quote a certain tumblr user who I won’t name and shame, ‘they put the crown on netflix’. I personally don’t really ‘ship’ it*** and I can’t really read or endorse rpf fic (too uncomfortable!), but I do think outright policing people for having mild**** fun with rpf is going overboard. My serious take on their relationship is that misha’s friendship has genuinely impacted jensen’s life in a positive way and I think that’s really sweet.
*except for the episode with dean’s daughter which we don’t talk about **unlike that time at that con when... oh. you know ***however I’m not above observing and having a good laugh at ‘the gang is cockles truthing’ reblogs on my dash ****keep it far away from the public, actors and your objective perception of reality and you’re fine. misha reposted a cockles thread and kept using the word ‘cockles’ in things so like. lol

Parade - Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center - February 16, 2015 (SJ Bernly's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Jeremy Jordan (Leo Frank), Laura Benanti (Lucille Frank), Charlie Franklin (Frankie Epps), Emerson Steele (Mary Phagan), John Ellison Conlee (Hugh Dorsey), Alan Campbell (Governor John Slaton), Joshua Henry (Jim Conley), Nathaniel Stampley (Newt Lee), Andy Mientus (Britt Craig), Eric Anderson (J.N. Starnes), Davis Gaines (Judge Roan), Ramin Karimloo (Tom Watson), Andrea Jones-Sojola (Minola McKnight), Katie Rose Clarke (Mrs. Phagan), Rachel de Benedet (Sally Slaton), John Jellison (Mr. Peavy), Caitlin Houlahan (Iola Stover), Allie Trimm (Essie), Ephie Aardema (Monteen), John Jellison (Luther Rosser), Andrea Jones-Sojola (Angela), Charlie Franklin (Young Confederate Soldier), Eric Leviton (Officer Ivery), Nathaniel Stampley (Riley) NOTES: A fantastic capture of this one-night-only concert at Avery Fisher Hall. Jeremy and Laura give incredible performances, as does Joshua Henry and too many others to name. Jason Robert Brown gives a speech after the curtain call. Truly an epic night of theatre. This is a very near perfect video with no obstruction and only slight washout in wide shots. There are two quick dropouts in the first few minutes, but the concert is otherwise fully captured. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call, Jason’s speech, and playbill scans. Throughout, very clearly shot with no obstructions, in a mixture of wides and closes, following the action well. I think it's shot from the front of the circle. Once or twice the camera falls but never during key moments, and is quickly fixed. No long blackouts. Audience energy is great. The Play That Goes Wrong - West End (Duchess Theatre) - March, 2020 (hitmewithyourbethshot's master) FORMAT: MTS CAST: Ross Green (Chris Bean), Tom Bulpett (s/b Robert Grove), James Watterson (e/c Jonathan Harris), Ellie Morris (Sandra Wilkinson), Milo Clarke (Max Bennett), Michael Keene (Dennis Tyde), Leah Penston (s/b Annie Twilliol), Blayar Benn (Trevor Watson) Pokémon Live! - First National Tour - December 30, 2000 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT: MP4 (SD) CAST: Dominic Nolfi (Ash Ketchum), Heidi Michelle Weyhmueller (Misty), Dennis Kenney (Brock), Darren Dunstan (Giovanni), Lauren Kling (Jessie), Andrew Rannells (James), Dee Roscioli (Delia Ketchum), Patrick Frankfort (Professor Oak), Jennifer Risser (Pikachu), Kathleen Roche (Meowth), Leah Smith (Psyduck), Shaun Bradley (Mewtwo), Leah Smith (Jigglypuff), Natalie Weld (Nurse Joy), Suzanne Wogisch (Officer Jenny), Sinclair Mitchell (Dexter) NOTES: HOUSE-CAM and soundboard. Shot from the back of the theatre with some washout. Upgraded file with audience heads cut out and cropped image retaining all action Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience - Off-Broadway - May 23, 2012 FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Daniel Clarkson, Jefferson Turner NOTES: All seven Harry Potter books condensed into seventy minutes. Full/mid stage shot. Pretty Woman: The Musical - Broadway - January 16, 2019 FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Samantha Barks (Vivian Ward), Adam Pascal (t/r Edward Lewis), Jennifer Sanchez (u/s Kit De Luca) NOTES: A lot of washout. Wide shot. Shot from the mez. Pretty Woman: The Musical - Broadway - February, 2019 (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Samantha Barks (Vivian Ward), Adam Pascal (Edward Lewis), Eric Anderson (Mr. Thompson/Happy Man), Jason Danieley (Philip Stuckey), Kingsley Leggs (James Morse), Orfeh (Kit De Luca), Tommy Bracco (Giulio) NOTES: (not Master notes) Seems a fantastic capture of the show. Virtually no dropouts, obstructions and spotlight washout. Filmed more centre than the preview recording by the same master; mix of wides, mediums and some closeups; very good capture of the sets and actor choreography. Both are worth watching. Pretty Woman: The Musical - Broadway - July, 2018 (Preview) (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Samantha Barks (Vivian Ward), Andy Karl (Edward Lewis), Eric Anderson (Mr. Thompson/Happy Man), Jason Danieley (Philip Stuckey), Ezra Knight (James Morse), Orfeh (Kit De Luca), Allison Blackwell (Violetta), Tommy Bracco (Giulio), Brian Cali (Fred/Alfredo), Robby Clater (David Morse), Anna Eilinsfeld (Susan/Scarlett) NOTES: (not Master notes) Seems a fantastic capture of the show. Virtually no dropouts or obstructions. More spotlight washout than the Feb 2019 recording by the same master, but it's very minimal. Filmed at slight angle and with more closeups compared to the other recording. Very good capture of the actors' expressions. Both are worth watching. Pretty Woman: The Musical - Hamburg - September 25, 2019 (Preview) (Rumpel's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Patricia Meeden (Vivian Ward), Mark Seibert (Edward Lewis), Paul Kribbe (Mr. Thompson/Happy Man), Nigel Casey (Philip Stuckey), Frank Logemann (James Morse), Maricel (Kit De Luca) Pretty Woman: The Musical - Pre-Broadway/Chicago - April 13, 2018 (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Samantha Barks (Vivian Ward), Steve Kazee (Edward Lewis), Eric Anderson (Mr. Thompson/Happy Man), Jason Danieley (Philip Stuckey), Kingsley Leggs (James Morse), Orfeh (Kit De Luca) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the PreBroadway production. This includes Steve as Edward before he left the production prior to Broadway. Such a fun show with terrific performances and a rare glimpse of Steve in the role! A Pride and Prejudice - TheatreWorks Silicon Valley - December, 2019 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Mary Mattison (Elizabeth Bennet), Sharon Rietkerk (Jane Bennet), Justin Mortelliti (Fitzwilliam Darcy), Travis Leland (Charles Bingley), Monique Hafen (Caroline Bingley) NOTES: Streamed by TheaterMania on April 10, 2020. Hosted by Julie James, Laura Osnes, and Beth Leavel. The Prince of Egypt - West End - March 5, 2020 (BwaytoWestEnd's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Luke Brady (Moses), Liam Tamne (Ramses), Alexia Khadime (Miriam), Christine Allado (Tzipporah), Gary Wilmot (Jethro), Silas Wyatt-Barke (Aaron), Joe Dixon (Seti), Debbie Kurup (Queen Tuya), Tanisha Spring (Nefertari), Adam Pearce (Hotep), Mercedesz Csampai (Yocheved) NOTES: Approx 12 gb stageshot filmed from stalls. Audio is awful most of the time. FORMAT: video CAST: Luke Brady (Moses), Liam Tamne (Ramses), Alexia Khadime (Miriam), Christine Allado (Tzipporah), Gary Wilmot (Jethro), Silas Wyatt-Barke (Aaron), Joe Dixon (Seti), Debbie Kurup (Queen Tuya), Tanisha Spring (Nefertari), Adam Pearce (Hotep), Mercedesz Csampai (Yocheved), Iman Pabani (Young Miriam/Leah/Young Hebrew Girl), Leo Babet (Young Aaron/Young Egyptian Boy/Young Midian Boy) NOTES: This video is never to be publicly shared on YouTube, tumblr, Facebook, Stage Dork etc. The Producers - Hollywood Bowl - July 28, 2012 FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Richard Kind (Max Bialystock), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Leo Bloom), Gary Beach (Roger De Bris), Roger Bart (Carmen Ghia), Rebecca Romijn (Ulla), Dane Cook (Franz Liebkind) NOTES: Excellent capture of this year's Hollywood Bowl production. Action is followed well with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The first minute of the show is missing, and the next few minutes are a bit shaky with scattered blackouts, but after "The King of Broadway" it settles and the majority of the show is captured nicely. SPOILER: Before "Keep It Gay" started, when Roger says "What's the word?" someone from the audience shouted out "Gay" which sent the cast into a laughing fit. The Prom - Broadway - August 11, 2019 (Matinee) (Closing Night) (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Caitlin Kinnunen (Emma Nolan), Brooks Ashmanskas (Barry Glickman), Isabelle McCalla (Alyssa Greene), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), Michael Genet (Mr. Hawkins), Angie Schworer (Angie), Courtenay Collins (Mrs. Greene), Josh Lamon (Sheldon Saperstein), Becca Lee (Kaylee), Kalyn West (Shelby), Teddy Toye (Nick), Josh Franklin (Motel Clerk), Drew Redington (Kevin), Courtney Balan (Olivia Keating), Anthony Norman, Brittany Conigatti, Fernell Hogan, Jack Sippel, Jerusha Cavazos, Joomin Hwang, Mary Antonini, Shelby Finnie, Sheldon Henry, Vasthy Mompoint NOTES: Gift upon request. Unobstructed closing performance with the full cast! Starts in the beginning of "Changing Lives" and is a little washed out. For whatever reason my camera was mad at me and didn't want to focus in the beginning of Act One. It warmed up and got better, and to be honest I opted for wider shots because everyone was doing crazy things and I didn't want to miss anything. I stood up for all but one of the standing ovations and when I did so I have no idea what my camera did or what it was looking at. I would say sorry but it wouldn't be true. I'm just so damn proud of all of these people. Please do not post this bootleg publicly! The Prom - Broadway - February, 2019 (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Caitlin Kinnunen (Emma Nolan), Josh Lamon (u/s Barry Glickman), Isabelle McCalla (Alyssa Greene), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), Michael Genet (Mr. Hawkins), Angie Schworer (Angie), Courtenay Collins (Mrs. Greene), David Josefsberg (u/s Sheldon Saperstein) NOTES: Excellent capture! Josh mistakenly mentions Alyssa in 'Tonight Belongs to You' despite not being meant to know her name at this point. The last three minutes of the show are from a different performance, during previews, with Brooks Ashmanskas as Barry and Josh Lamon as Sheldon, but it is a full video in total. The Prom - Broadway - March, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Gabi Campo (u/s Emma Nolan), Brooks Ashmanskas (Barry Glickman), Isabelle McCalla (Alyssa Greene), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), Michael Potts (Mr. Hawkins), Angie Schworer (Angie), Courtenay Collins (Mrs. Greene), David Josefsberg (u/s Sheldon Saperstein), Becca Lee (Kaylee), Susie Carroll (s/w Shelby), Teddy Toye (Nick), Drew Redington (Kevin), Courtney Balan (Olivia Keating) NOTES: This video starts at "Dance With You" and is super focused on Gabi. There are less heads in this than most of my videos and a railing that gets in the way occasionally, but they were mostly worked around. The cast as a whole is doing top notch work, though at times you can tell that Brooks and Izzy are just back from being sick. Overall this is a really great video of one of my favorite shows, and I'm really proud of myself for containing my crying at the end of act one. The Prom - Pre-Broadway / Atlanta - September 17, 2016 (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Caitlin Kinnunen (Emma Nolan), Brooks Ashmanskas (Barry Glickman), Anna Grace Barlow (Alyssa Greene), Beth Leavel (Dee Dee Allen), Christopher Sieber (Trent Oliver), Martin Moran (Mr. Hawkins), Angie Schworer (Angie), Josh Lamon (Sheldon Saperstein) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the Pre-Broadway tryout. A really touching and funny new musical, led by a hilarious cast of Broadway veterans. A perfect mix of comedy and drama.

Ahalya laughed when the other woman confessed that she too should have opted for bringing something, rather than hosting. Then again, Ahalya could understand wanting to do something special. She might not have the talent at putting together an elaborate meal, but she sure did appreciate when someone else did. Which was why now, though it was not a three-course dinner, she was personally invested in ensuring that Amelia’s first attempt was a success. She preened a little at the compliment, before breaking into laughter and shaking her head. “Trust me, you’re giving me the chance to live out my dreams of being a hoity-toity wine connoisseur. But the secret is, I’m just referring to the guide they gave me.” At the final question, Ahalya brightened significantly. “Listen, I don’t need a pamphlet for this. Desserts are my actual specialty.” Motioning for her to follow, Ahalya led her towards their bakery. “How many people are we talking? And what are their sweet tolerance levels like?” | @robertsameliax
Amelia laughed. “I’m learning that is exactly what I should have done as well but I will remember that for next time I decide to host something. It really shouldn’t be this complicated.” Amelia wasn’t fancy in the slightest but she wanted to appear to be. Maybe to impress her brother and his partner or maybe to impress herself and feel like those ten years away made her more sophisticated than it really did. Whatever the reason, she was glad for some help in this department because she would have been lost without it. After hearing the suggestion, she nodded her head and grabbed the bottle of rośe and added it to her basket. “You are a life saver, you know that right?” She said with a smile. “Okay, one more question and I’ll let you be on your way. What about desert options? Anything you recommend?”

Lockheed Vega by Robert Sullivan Via Flickr: Amelia Earhart Lockheed "Vega" 5B (A19670093000) at the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum. Photo taken by Eric Long. Photo taken on December 28, 2016. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Lockheed Vega is an American six-passenger high-wing monoplane airliner built by the Lockheed Corporation starting in 1927. It became famous for its use by a number of record-breaking pilots who were attracted to the rugged and very long-range design. Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in one, and Wiley Post used his to prove the existence of the jet stream after having flown around the world twice. Design and development Designed by John Knudsen Northrop and Gerald Vultee, both of whom would later form their own companies, the aircraft was originally intended to serve with Lockheed's own airline routes. They set out to build a four-seat aircraft that was not only rugged but also one of the fastest aircraft of its era. Using a wooden monocoque fuselage, plywood-covered cantilever wings and the best engine available, the Vega delivered on the promise of speed. The fuselage was built from sheets of plywood, skinned over wooden ribs. Using a large concrete mold, a single half of the fuselage shell was laminated in sections with glue between each layer and then a rubber bladder was lowered into the mold and inflated with air to compress the lamination into shape against the inside of the mold. The two fuselage halves were then nailed and glued over a separately constructed rib framework. With the fuselage constructed in this fashion, the wing spar couldn't cut through the fuselage, so the single spar cantilever wing was mounted atop the aircraft. Only the engine and landing gear remained essentially unstreamlined, and on the production versions the undercarriage had teardrop shaped fairings covering the wheels, while only the earliest versions lacked NACA cowlings and had the engine cylinders exposed to the airstream. It was powered by the Wright Whirlwind air-cooled radial engine, which delivered 225 horsepower (168 kW). Operational history The first Vega 1, named the "Golden Eagle", flew from Lockheed's Los Angeles plant on July 4, 1927. It could cruise at a then-fast 120 mph (193 km/h), and had a top speed of 135 mph (217 km/h). The four-passenger (plus one pilot) load was considered too small for airline use. A number of private owners placed orders for the design, and by the end of 1928, 68 of this original design had been produced. In the 1929 National Air Races in Cleveland, Vegas won every speed award. In 1928, "Vega Yankee Doodle" (NX4789) was used to break transcontinental speed records. On August 19–20, Hollywood stunt flier Arthur C. Goebel broke the coast-to-coast record of Russell Maughan by flying from Los Angeles, California, to Garden City, New York, in 18 hours and 58 minutes, in what was also the first nonstop flight from west to east. On October 25, barnstormer and former mail pilot Charles B.D. Collyer broke the nonstop east to west record set in 1923 by the U.S. Army Air Service in 24 hours and 51 minutes. Trying to break the new West-to-East record on November 3, Collyer crashed near Prescott, Arizona, killing him and the aircraft owner, Harry J. Tucker. Looking to improve the design, Lockheed delivered the Vega 5 in 1929. Adding the Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp engine of 450 hp (336 kW) and a new NACA cowling improved performance enough to allow the addition of two more seats, and increased cruising speed to 155 mph (249 km/h) and top speed to 165 mph (266 km/h). The new six-seat configuration proved to be too small, and the 5 was purchased primarily for private aviation and executive transport. A total of 64 Vega 5s were built. In 1931, the United States Army Air Corps bought two Vega 5s; one designated C-12 and one as the C-17. The C-17 had additional fuel tanks in the wings. The Vega could be difficult to land. In her memoir, Elinor Smith wrote that it had "all the glide potential of a boulder falling off a mountain." In addition, forward and side visibility from the cockpit was extremely limited; Lane Wallace, a columnist for Flying magazine, wrote that "Even [in level flight], the windscreen would offer a better view of the sky than anything else, which would make it more of a challenge to detect changes in attitude or bank angle. On takeoff or landing, there'd be almost no forward visibility whatsoever."

Graphic novel is a stupid term that often encompasses things that are not novels, but I used it as a blanket term for anything comics I read that were bound rather than stapled. Minis are shorter works, stapled, and generally self-published by the artist, or done by a small press like Shortbox or Youth in Decline. I was totally lazy about crediting creators on series because my actual list for that is a grid, keeping track of each issue. Similarly, when listing creators on trades, I tended to only list writer and artist which is enough for some books, but sometimes there are many more, inkers, and colorists and letterers, and maybe I’ll do better next year.
Support your local library, your local comic shop (especially Hub Comics if you’re in the Boston area), and indie comic shows like MICE.

George William Crockett, Jr.

George William Crockett Jr. (August 10, 1909 – September 7, 1997) was an African-American attorney, jurist, and congressman from the U.S. state of Michigan. He also served as a national vice-president of the National Lawyers Guild and co-founded what is believed to be the first racially integrated law firm in the United States.
Early life
George Crockett was born in Jacksonville, Florida to George William Crockett, Sr. (1883–1975) and Minnie Amelia Jenkins (1884–1983), who had two other children: Alzeda Crockett and John Frazier Crockett. George Sr. pastored the Harmony Baptist Church in Jacksonville for more than 30 years and mastered the carpentry trade. George Sr. became a railroad carpenter for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. His son, George Jr., would later build room additions and continue practicing carpentry for pleasure in adulthood. Minnie, a gentle woman, Sunday School teacher and poet, said in a November 23, 1969 Times-Union Journal (Jacksonville) article, "My philosophy is that children should be ahead of their parents, should climb a step higher and make a contribution to the family and to society." George Jr. took his mother's philosophy to heart.
Education
Crockett graduated from Stanton High School in Jacksonville. In 1931, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, a prestigious, historically black university that awarded its first degrees in 1897. He was later given an Honorary LL.D. from Morehouse in 1972, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and served as a Trustee of the College for many years. During his Morehouse tenure, Crockett pledged Kappa Alpha Psi.
Crockett received a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1934 and returned to Jacksonville to practice law that year as one of very few African American attorneys in the state of Florida.
As a lawyer
Crockett participated in the founding convention of the nation's first racially integrated bar association, the National Lawyers Guild in 1937, and later served that organization as its national vice-president.
As the first African-American lawyer in the U.S. Department of Labor, 1939–43, Crockett worked as a senior attorney on employment cases brought under the National Labor Relations Act, a legislative program of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Crockett also worked as a hearing officer in the Federal Fair Employment Practices Commission during 1943.
That same year the United Auto Workers retained Crockett to run the union’s Fair Practices Committee, which tried to oppose so-called “hate strikes” by white workers, who protested the migration North by Black workers.
In 1946, Crockett along with partners Ernest Goodman, Morton Eden, and Dean A. Robb, co-founded the corporation believed to be the first racially integrated law firm in the U.S., Goodman, Crockett, Eden, and Robb, in Detroit, Michigan. The firm, eventually called Goodman, Eden, Millender and Bedrosian, closed in 1998.
In 1948, Crockett became a member of the legal team that went to New York for the Foley Square trial to defend 11 Communist Party leaders accused of teaching the overthrow of the Federal government, a violation of the Smith Act. Among the 11 were Communist Party leaders: Gil Green, Eugene Dennis, Henry Winston, John Gates, Gus Hall, Robert G. Thompson and fellow Morehouse alumnus and first black New York City Councilman Benjamin J. Davis. In 1949, while defending the Smith Act prosecution, Crockett and four other defense attorneys were sentenced by Judge Harold Medina to Federal prison for contempt of court. Crockett served four months in an Ashland, Kentucky Federal prison in 1952. A portion of Crockett's jury summation at the trial was published in "Freedom is Everybody's Job!: The Crime of the Government Against the Negro People, Summation in the trial of the 11 Communist leaders."
Crockett’s criticism of McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee grew after that case, and in 1952 he represented future Detroit mayor Coleman Young and the Rev. Charles A. Hill before the Committee.
As large numbers of young civil rights volunteers traveled to the U.S. South in the spring of 1964, Crockett recruited lawyers from the National Lawyers Guild to follow them. He founded the National Lawyers Guild’s office in Jackson, Mississippi, and managed the Mississippi Project (a coalition of the NLG and other leading civil rights legal organizations) during the 1964 Freedom Summer.
The infamous murders of the civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner occurred in June of that year. The three had been arrested by local police while investigating the arson of a Black church near Philadelphia, Mississippi. Collaborating with local white supremacist vigilantes, the Neshoba County sheriff released the three men from jail late at night, and other civil rights workers reported their disappearance.
From the NLG office in Jackson, Crockett dispatched Guild lawyers to search for the missing men. The effort was in vain, and, years later, Crockett described his growing despair in the 1995 PBS documentary Mississippi America, narrated by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.
In the film, Crockett recounts his drive from Jackson to Meridian in a personal search for the missing men. He survived an effort of the sheriff to arrange his ambush by loudly offering driving directions, while white supremacists loitered nearby. Crockett returned safely to Jackson. He offered a full report to the Justice Department and the FBI, who refused to take the information. The murdered bodies of the 3 young men, one black, two white, were found days later.
As a judge
In 1965, Crockett became a candidate for the Detroit Common Council. Bob Millender guided his campaign. Crockett lost by a small margin "after he had been severely red-baited in the election," according to his former law partner Ernie Goodman (A Tribute to George W. Crockett, Jr, privately published, 1997.)
In 1966, Crockett was elected Judge of Recorder's Court, Wayne County, Michigan. The court handled criminal cases. From that bench, Judge Crockett incurred the wrath of the white corporate media and endured death threats for his role in a highly publicized police shooting, raid, and mass arrest.
On March 29, 1969, following an officer-involved shooting outside New Bethel Baptist Church in which a Detroit police officer died, police officers fired into and stormed the church. A secessionist organization, the Republic of New Afrika, had rented the church for a meeting. Witnesses in the majority African-American neighborhood later stated that the responding officers had all been white. More than one-hundred fifty persons, including juveniles, were arrested inside the church and taken to police headquarters. The church pastor called Judge Crockett before dawn.
Crockett opened temporary court at police headquarters. In refusing to find probable cause to hold the people from what he termed a “collective punishment” mass arrest, Judge Crockett released 130 of the arrested persons. In the controversy that followed, Detroit saw the appearance of bumper stickers that read, “Sock It to Crockett” and "Impeach Judge Crockett". The police association organized a picket line at the courthouse. The black community and interracial civic organizations supported Crockett.
In 1974, Crockett was elected Chief Judge of the Detroit's Recorder's Court. He served there until retiring in 1978.
As a Congressman
In November 1980, as the candidate of the Democratic Party from Michigan's 13th congressional district, Crockett was elected in a special election to the 96th Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles C. Diggs, Jr. from the U.S. House of Representatives. Dennis W. Archer ran Crockett's successful election [1] campaign].
Crockett was simultaneously elected to a full term in the 97th Congress and was subsequently re-elected to the next four Congresses, serving from November 4, 1980, to January 3, 1991. Speaker of the House Thomas "Tip" O'Neill swore in 71-year-old Crockett in the presence of Crockett's wife Dr. Harriette Clark Crockett, son, and 96-year-old mother, Mrs. Minnie Crockett. She recited a poem she composed many years earlier titled, Our Children Three.
During his tenure, Crockett was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Democratic Study Group, the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues, and the Congressional Arts Caucus. He also served on the House Judiciary Committee, the Select Committee on Aging, and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. As a member of the Africa Subcommittee, Crocket authored the Mandela Freedom Resolution, HB.430, which called upon the South Africa government to release Nelson Mandela and his wife Winnie Mandela from imprisonment and banning. The resolution was passed by both houses of Congress in 1984. Later, Crockett continued to denounce apartheid in South Africa and was jailed with Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young and others for demonstrating in Washington, DC against apartheid.
Crockett filed suit against the Reagan administration claiming violation of the War Powers Act in providing El Salvador with military aid (Crockett v. Reagan, 720 F.2d 1355 (C.A.D.C., 1983)).
Crockett chaired the Foreign Affairs' Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere Affairs from 1987 until his retirement.
On Wednesday, March 28, 1990 Crockett, who was affectionately called "Judge" by his House colleagues, announced on the House Floor: "Mr. Speaker, a few days ago the press carried the story on the death of the Honorable Harold Medina, who was the judge who presided over the famous communist trials in New York back in 1949 and 1950. In the course of that trial, Judge Medina sentenced the five defense lawyers to prison. I'm the only living survivor of those five defense lawyers.
"During the four months that I served in a federal prison, it never occurred to me that one day I would also serve in the United States Congress and be a member of the committee having oversight jurisdiction over all federal judges and all federal prisons.
"Today, Mr. Speaker, I rise to inform my colleagues that I have decided to retire from the House at the conclusion of the 101st Congress. After 68 years of working, championing unpopular causes, I'm hoping to enjoy a little time off.... I've been privileged to serve the people of Michigan's 13th District in this body, and it has been a challenge and an honor I will always cherish."
Representative John Conyers, also from Detroit, described Crockett's announcement by saying "When he finished, all the members stood and clapped." Source: Detroit Free Press, March 29, 1990, p. 15A.
Family
George and Ethelene Crockett had three children: Elizabeth Crockett Hicks, George W. Crockett III, and Dr. Ethelene Crockett Jones. George III also served on the Recorders Court. George Jr. had nine grandchildren: Wayne, Charles, Kyra, Iyisa, Kimberly, Kelly, LeBeau and Enrique, and eight great-grandchildren. One nephew, Rear Admiral Benjamin Thurman Hacker (1935–2003) was a U.S. Navy officer, who became the first Naval Flight Officer to achieve Flag rank.
Following the death of Dr. Ethelene Crockett, George Crockett Jr. married Dr. Harriette Clark Chambliss, a pediatrician in Washington, D.C.
Crockett is buried in Laurel, Delaware in the New Zion United Methodist Church cemetery, with his parents and other generations of Crocketts and within walking distance from Crockett Street, named in honor of the Crockett family.
