PSA: Consideration aka The Bare Minimum of RP.

This is what you should be doing no matter how you run your blog. No matter how fast or slow you are. No matter if you run a single muse blog, a multi, or a collection. No matter your mental or physical health.

This Is. The Bare Minimum. The Very Basic of Basic. That You Should Be Doing.

READ THE RULES! This is the most basic thing of all and people still don't do it. But the rules will tell you whether your blog is compatible with another and often contains VERY important information such as trigger warnings or canon divergent notes. And if you don't read them, it is glaringly obvious.

IF YOUR MUTUAL HAS AN INTEREST CHECKER, FILL IT IN! It takes five minutes or less, shows your mutuals you're truly interested in writing with them and leads the way to better interaction both IC and OOC.

FOLLOW THROUGH WITH STARTER / MEME / PLOTTING CALLS! Putting out multiple calls and never delivering, or only doing selective ones, is not fair. If you can't manage a high number, place a cap on how many you're accepting. Remember, you made the request, so be fair to those who made the first move to interact with you!

REACH OUT FOR INTERACTION! Nobody wants mutuals for decoration. You are not a house plant or a casual observer. The worst that can happen is they say no, in which case you're free to move on to other writing partners. Even just saying hi to a new mutual is a start.

IF YOU DON’T LIKE PLOTTING, SEND MEMES. IF YOU DO LIKE PLOTTING, SEND A MESSAGE! It’s that simple. Anxiety or shyness is not a valid excuse in 2023 to ignore your mutuals or refuse to make contact. RP is clearly not the hobby for you, because communication is key to building strong writing partnerships.

If you can’t manage these very simple things then you’re not being considerate to your mutuals. RP is a two way street, it takes teamwork, and a one sided game is NOT fun. RP is a hobby, yes, but your mutuals aren’t disposable entertainment and we need to stop treating eachother like this as we step into the New Year.

If your feel your blog is being “ignored” or getting zero interaction, you need to consider that you, the mun, may be the source of the issue. Deleting starter and plot calls because you only got 1 or 2 likes and not more? Bad. Those people who liked it are potential interactions that, by deleting & not responding to their reaching out, you have just burned on interaction. And on the same token—if someone liked either of those, FOLLOW THROUGH. People notice when you don’t follow through on starter or plot calls. They remember. Consider every time you do that that the person who liked that one is less likely to engage with you PERIOD. Every time you do that is a lost interaction that only you are at fault for. Don’t have just one meme, and DON’T close your inbox—and most of all, don’t say “not accepting” on your memes. If you don’t want any more of that meme, delete the meme. But don’t delete ALL of your memes. If you say “not accepting” or turn your inbox off, you’re closing yourself off to possible interactions. “Not accepting” gives the impression of “don’t interact/engage with me/send things to my inbox, and it’s not a good one. Limit your OOC. If you post more OOC than you do IC/meme reblogs/aesthetics and musings, that’s too much. A little is okay, but when the majority of your blog is it (and no, deleting it later doesn’t make it better; it still shows up on the dash, someone still sees it, and they see you’re posting more OOC than you are other things). If you need to talk about your muses, find headcanon prompts and write headcanons based on them, even if you never received a meme. Write drabbles. Make sure the focus is on your muses & their world, not what you had for breakfast. That, or make a personal blog, even if it’s just a sideblog for you to ramble on. And most of all: limit your negativity on the dash. If you’re constantly (and by constantly, I mean more then 1-2 times a month at most) posting negative commentary, complaints, and most especially vague-posting about how you don’t get interactions, you feel bad, you don’t feel confident in your muses, etc… you need to step back and remember: your mutuals are human too. Most of them have their own mental health issues to deal with, and not everyone talks about their mood on the dash, either. Someone might have something going on in the background; seeing you being negative may bring their mood down. Seeing vague-posting may make them anxious or uncomfortable or feel like you’re talking about them, even if you aren’t. Every time you post something negative, consider that you’ve possibly made someone else’s day worse.

hello friends. a few housekeeping notes. from now on, this blog is going to be almost completely plotted dynamics based. i could not care less about a follower count, and it does not bring me joy to have mutuals that can't so much as throw a like on a headcanon post saying they read it. or send a message saying hi / asking to plot. or like a starter call or send a meme or interact in some way.

i've also noticed an unfortunate trend where people post starters and meme replies and they get one reply or no replies and the writing partner can't even spare a like for that post? why are we even here if we're not interacting? that's kind of the point of rp. at least, that's why i'm here. i've talked to mutuals who feel the same way, and that was part of the reason i didn't log on here for like a month.

i always have the most muse for the people who i talk to ooc. i want to actually create and develop dynamics, not just post a bunch of little starters that go nowhere. i want to yell about our muses and share quotes and musing posts and keysmash about dynamics.

moving forward, i will be keeping track of the last time i wrote each muse, and the muses that i don't write will either be moved to my misc / request only muses or removed completely. that's more for my own personal benefit, but if you like a muse, write with them.

i wish this hobby could turn into a community again, but i am sosososo thankful for the friendships i have been lucky enough to make here. i have so much fun writing and plotting with those of you who have actually taken time to interact and become friends.

start out by making a new blog for your character. (i wouldn't recommend starting out with a sideblog personally, since you can't send asks from them). choose a url that feels relevant. i'm always a fan of the ol "smush two words together that sound nice" technique — ie, my other blogs are huntershowl and icarusplunged — which never seems to fully go out of style. really you can do whatever feels right to you :)

the most important part of setting up an rp blog is creating a rules page and, if you're writing an OC, an about page. the rules set up your boundaries, your wants and don't wants, anything you want someone to know before they follow you. the about page should give new partners everything they need to know about your character — personality, appearance, setting/lore, any backstory you want to display publicly.

feel free to look around at different rpers' rules pages and use them as inspiration! as long as nothing is copypasted and everything is your own original content, which brings me to etiquette.

'tis largely an Unspoken Thing in the rpc (rp community), and breaching it can def make people feel uncomfortable (even though that's something that Should be in rules pages, most of us forget haha). here are the things i can think of off the top of my head:

the way to reach out to new people is simply to follow them. that's all you gotta do! if they don't follow back, don't push, just unfollow them after a few weeks and move on. it's almost never personal!

in that vein, if someone's blog is private/selective/mutuals-only, wait to interact until they follow back.

once they do, it's up to you how you want to move forward — usually i'll wait until they post some sort of interaction call for you to like. a starter call, a plotting call, orrrr if they reblog an ask meme (which is like a list of sentence prompts! you can choose one from the list and send it as an ask, which they can use as an rp starter.) you can also just IM them though :)

don't reblog non-rp content (ask memes, quotes/imagery, etc) directly from another rp blog, it clogs up their notifications! just reblog from the original post instead.

don't interact with other people's threads (liking or reblogging, but feel free to read them and talk about them ooc!), and only respond to a starter if it's labeled as open — otherwise it was probably written for another rper specifically.

try not to prod people too hard if they haven't responded in a while. some folks are okay with being reminded about a forgotten thread a few weeks after replies stall out.

always tag nsft (not safe for tumblr, the other acronym gets flagged/hidden) and very upsetting content — gore, SA or abuse mentions, etc. i've seen some people starting to use "dead dove do not eat" as a catch-all for super dark content, but honestly that phrase gives me the heebiest of jeebies so i prefer to go with individual tags

general platformless rp etiquette rules apply: don't steal other people's content, don't assume or control the other character's actions/thoughts/etc.

be kind to each other, most of all. communicate when you have a problem with someone, rather than making a vague/callout post about them. that being said, i'm a proponent of the block button — blocking people is okay! it's not a big deal. this is a hobby space and no one is entitled to you. advocate for yourself!!

now: RP STRUCTURE (the fun part)

we don't really do "script" style rp on tumblr — it'll usually, if not always, be in prose/paragraph form. formatting is a fun touch, but not necessary. as you can see, i'm using small text here with some little chunks of text in bold/italic or regular size text to add some visual interest. again, not necessary! experiment, figure out what you like!

lots of people will use icons of different sizes — 100x100 is the most common, but they really do vary. i would suggest going smaller rather than bigger (like don't use full post-width gifs or icons, try to keep them under half the size of the post? that's the most common vibe at least.)

icons can be used to "illustrate" your character's expression among a bunch of text, if you want Visual Spice. but they are soooo not necessary! totally up to you.

to reply to a thread, reblog it and add your post.

important: i highly recommend downloading and installing XKIT in your browser. it's an extension that lets you trim posts to the last two reblogs (common around here), customize your blog experience, and just makes it a lot easier to exist on tumblr haha.

I am exclusive in all verses, blog-wide, with one Rogue and that is @onlyarogue. If no rogue is mentioned or my remy has not met a rogue in our thread it's still noon's rogue, technically. i don't ship just with rogue but in my main verse it is end game.

Expecting mutuals to acknowledge your presence on their dash is not “taking RP too seriously”. I have mutuals that I haven’t written with in months because they have no muse or time to write, but they still pop up and like my posts occasionally or send me a message just to chat—and not always about RP or to plot, either. But when I see you—queued or otherwise, doesn’t matter, you’re still around at some point putting things into your queue—posting new starter calls, meme calls, reblogging memes, and adding new muses and you can’t spare so much as a like, a meme my direction that isn’t from me liking your meme call (doesn’t have to be IC, could be OOC), a comment on my post, or even just a single message, then yes—after waiting four+ months on a handful of responses from you, I AM going to take that as disinterest. I am not here to be another number (or a few, given I have multiple single-muse blogs) under your follows. I am not here to feel like I’m screaming into the void for your attention only to have the meme-sending and spontaneous interactions be entirely because I either liked YOUR post or I sent YOU the meme(s). And I am certainly not here to be constantly back-burnered by your 3-5 new muses a week you add over every new obsession you get. I hate the lack of reciprocation in the RPC some days. Abhor it.
