Your devotion to your lord should be absolute. You are meant to serve him with everything you have: mind, body, and soul.

You will be at his side at all times, except for when he dismisses you. If he wishes to hunt, you will prepare the horses. If he wishes to walk the walls, you will trail behind. If he wishes to spar, you will help him into his armor.

You will provide everything he needs. No one else cares for him as much as you, and anything he demands is his. You should fall to your knees just as easily as you jump to shield him. You are built to service him; it is your only purpose.

You will love him fiercer than any other could. It is inevitable, and you both know it. He may take other lovers, but for you, he will be your one and only. You cannot afford to be distracted by those lesser than him.

You will attend his wedding. He is too important to be a bachelor forever. It will be to a noble woman, and you will stand behind him during the ceremony, but you will not cry. It would be improper. You will be expected to guard the chamber door on his wedding night. Whether or not you are invited in is not your decision.

Your lord is not cruel. If you are devoted to him with all of your being, he will reward you. Perhaps with a nod of approval, or a word of praise. Perhaps with a scrap from his plate. Perhaps with a kiss, or a new set of armor. Perhaps, one evening, if he is particularly pleased with your performance, he will even let you sleep beside him in his bedchamber.

You will not have an easy life. But it will be worth it. It will be worth it to be his blade, no matter how much blood soaks into your soul. It will be worth it to teach his son how to hold a sword. It will be worth it to kneel at his side even when your knees creak. It will be worth it to grow old with him.

And if you are to perish before then, you know that you will die for the greatest cause of all: loyalty to the one you love.
