allan is an original NPC! the easiest way to look at him is as a blue sidequest giver LKJASLKFj completely missable, u get like. idk a handshake or a kees on the cheek (or more) LKJASKLFj but he does have a backstory that helps lend darker elements to plotting. its v flexible too in how light or dark it can get to make sure i don’t go too heavy with my rp partner if that’s not what they prefer. that being said, i did mention i love dark themes, so hmu if that’s what ur interested in!! also love to explore deeper plots connected to my rp partner’s muse too!!

Brief History:

Not much is known about his earlier life. However, he lived in Sharlayan for a significant amount of time as a low profile arcanist.

Was secretly banished from Sharlayan for [redacted].

Went to Ishgard since he had some contacts there, making it easier to hide from [redacted]. However, due to starting over completely and relying on those contacts, he owes a major amount of debt that he pays off with his special ability, [redacted].

At some point during this, he becomes an Astrologian.

After the Dragonsong War, he travelled around more often, figuring it's safe to do so after the time he spent in Ishgard. He still revisits Ishgard to deal with his remaining few debts every so often.

the 1-- definitley adora POV, reminiscing on maybe what they could have been. maybe in a world where catra never redeemed herself or they never reunited and adora watched her friends pair up/get married/build lives w each other, she might realize there is a whole in her heart. a part that’s missing and cant be explained, but she feels it every time she looks at glimmer&bow.

cardigan-- feels like catra writing a letter to adora. reflecting on the feelings of hurt and betrayal after time has passed and the anger fades

exile -- lowkey the premise of my fic but. ‘i’m not your problem anymore/ you were my crown/ now i’m in exile seeing you out’ catra was raised to feel like she was adora’s problem to fix. she feels cast aside by her for a majority of the series etc

my tears ricochet-- “i didn't have it in myself to go with grace//and you're the hero flying around saving face//and if I'm dead to you why are you at the wake?//cursing my name, wishing I stayed//look at how my tears ricochet” tswift explained this in the doc about how no one can hurt you like your best friend turned enemy. so i think in that sense this song works from adora’s perspective--but there’s so much bitterness and anger that i feel like it fits more from catra’s POV

seven-- “love you to the moon and to saturn//passed down like folksongs//the love lasts so long” i feel like this is so young/child adora and her feelings of protectiveness over catra. their bond through trauma and abuse

august--lmaoooooo i know. ok i KNOW what the deal is. i KNOW that cardigan, august and betty are a narrative story and really there are 3 POVs--james, betty & august. but i will do with that what i please. i just see catra’s pov from this song just as much as i see it for cardigan. her losing adora/feeling like adora doesn’t want her back or will choose other ppl over her.

this is me trying--can fit adora’s need to be everything for everyone/fear of failure--leading to burn out. also works for what i assume how catra’s redemption arc continued post s5. progress isn’t linear and this can show both of them struggling to recover from abuse

invisible string--if u strip out the imagery of taylor and her mans then sure

mad woman--i MEAN...is this not catra’s villain origin story? so often she was just poked/kicked/provoked into continuing down the dark path. not always by adora but regardless.

epiphany-- ‘with you i serve, with you i fall down’ reminding me of them both fighting/practicing/training together pre-s1 as well as them finally teaming up

betty--betty betty betty. the worst thing these two have ever done is what they did to each other. i see it more catra to adora, but it can go either way. gotta admire catra’s range for fitting into the role of betty, august + james... who else is doing it quite like her?

Colson was dropping “I Think I’m OKAY” tonight and Lux was excited to help promote it with him. It was one of her favorites off the new album and now she could publically boast about it. Getting to experience him making it with Yungblud had been a blast and she just had a feeling that this was gonna be the game changer for Colson. To top off her excitement, she was also getting a new tattoo tonight, but nobody else was aware of that. She had made up an excuse in order to get away from the boys saying she needed to run errands in the town they were in for the night. She loved them immensely, but their overbearing nature was making it difficult to get any alone time. She shook her head and sighed walking into the only shop she had been lucky enough to get into on short notice.

“Hello you must be Lux” The lady behind the counter said smiling and reaching to shake her hand. Lux took her hand and admired her features. She was cute with a pink flowy wig, steampunk goggles on her head, and a corset that pushed her chest into her throat.

“Yes I am. Thank you so much for fitting me in today” Lux smiled warmly.

“So let me show you what I have drawn up based on your description on the phone and we’ll go from there.” She lead her over to a table where she had drawn almost exactly what Lux had pictured in her head.

“Oh my gosh that’s perfect” Lux couldn’t believe she had gotten it right first try just from a phone conversation.

“Well awesome!” Let’s get you prepped and then we can get started on this sucker. My space is down the hall to the right.” She responded clasping her hands together clearly just as excited to have nailed the design.

“It’s gonna go on my left arm because I am right handed and I still need to be able to do things while it heals” Lux stated getting comfortable in the chair and resting her left arm palm up.

“Sounds good to me. Do you care if I play some music? I can’t stand the same 5 songs on the radio.” She asked plugging her phone into a little speaker.

“I would actually prefer that” Lux laughed and then laughed a little harder when the first song that played off the girl’s phone was “Hollywood Whore”. Lux couldn’t escape her boys even if she tried.

Colson was confused as to why he hadn’t seen or heard from Lux all damn day. He knew she said she had to go on a booze run for the bus and for backstage to pregame the concert with, but that usually didn’t take all day. He pulled out his phone to double check she hadn’t texted him and contemplated biting the bullet and texting her first. His mind must not have caught up with his hands because next thing he knew he was sending her a text message.

Colson: Where r u?

Lux: I ran away forever

Colson: Wait what!?

Lux: Chill. I’m kidding. Look

Lux sent a picture of her at the liquor store holding a bottle of Jameson kissing the label. Man was she cute. He couldn’t stop thinking about the night they had fallen asleep together out of his head. He was almost desperate to feel her embrace again. They would be staying at a hotel again tonight due to the fact that tomorrow was an off day and he hoped that she would stay in the hotel room with him again. He wanted to be able to hold her close against his chest this time and bury his face in her hair. Rubbing his hand down his face he groaned, he was so fucked.

Rook was drumming on his leg in anticipation, still after all these years of performing, he had pre-show anxiety. It disappeared the moment he would get on stage and normally Lux was there to help. She would distract him from the anxiety and he was sure she didn’t even know that she was doing it. Either by laying her head in his lap and forcing him to play with her hair, challenging him to a silly game of some sort, or just by talking to him about things that held her attention at the time. Rook hadn’t heard from her all day though and that was maybe increasing his anxiety a little bit. Colson and Ash said she had texted them at least once that day, but she hadn’t texted him?

“Hey whatcha thinking about?” Lux asked walking onto the bus with a few bags of alcohol and Colson trailing behind her with more bags.

“Uh nothing” His ears felt hot “Damn Lux this much alcohol should last us all tour.”

She fixed him with a devilish smile that he swears she learned from Colson. “You and I both know that that is not true”

“Hey what’s up with the bandage on your wrist?” Colson said going to grab her arm when she yanked it away from him.

“Nope no peeking until after the show” She scolded giving that same evil smirk.

“Wait is that for a tattoo?” Rook asked trying to get a peek

“I said after the show!” And that was that.

2017

“Come on it won’t be that bad!” Colson was trying to convince Lux to drink with him and the boys. She had only been working for Ash for 8 months and didn’t think it was appropriate. This was her first tour with them and she didn’t want to fuck it up.

“I can’t Kells. I gotta keep you guys in check” She sighed.

“What better way to keep a good eye on us than to party with us?” He was giving her the best puppy dog eyes that he could. Lux groaned and put her face in her hands. In the few months that she had worked for them she had learned that Kells had perfected the puppy dog eyes and he knew it.

“Fucking fine I will have a few drinks” She relented.

“Fuck yeah dude!” Kells and Rook high fived celebrating their small victory.

Lux was definitely not prepared for one of their parties. How did they fit so many women on a single bus? How were people navigating all of this? Why were Kells and Rook climbing the bus now? She was in way over her head here and was feeling slightly overwhelmed when she felt another shot being pressed into her hand by Slim, who was equally chaotic as the other boys just much more quiet. She eyed him suspiciously.

“Take the fucking shot pussy” Slim snickered and lifted his own shot into the air. Well while in Rome, Lux thought downing her own shot. Thank god she had the good sense to purchase extra tequila for tonight.

Lux was now feeling very warm despite there being less bodies on the bus in favor of going to party at a club. The tequila was making her giggly and outgoing laughing easily with the boys.

“You smoke?” Kells asked lighting what was probably at least his tenth joint in the last couple of hours.

“Uh yes, but not usually on the job” Lux slurred which caused her to frown. She needed to pull it together.

“Well tonight that changes” Kells smirked. “This is a drinking and smoking kind of job so you don’t need to act so responsible.”

“I would be stupid to turn down a joint from THE Machine Gun Kelly” Lux giggled thinking she was hilarious.

“Fucking yes!” Colson exclaimed “You’re EST fam now so get used to this shit.” Lux took the joint from him winking before taking a hit. She was feeling bold and confident with the liquid courage in her veins and did a perfect ghost. Kells was impressed by how well she did and how adorable she looked smoking his joint. He almost didn’t want to take it back and was kind of wishing they were the only two in the room.

“I have an idea.” Kells said taking the joint from her before taking a hit. Lux gave him a puzzled expression as he motioned for her to come closer. When she got in close enough distance he softly grabbed her chin and placed his mouth hovering over hers brushing their lips together. She opened her mouth and he released the smoke he was holding into hers as she inhaled. He leaned back and silently celebrated how red he had made her. Lux slowly exhaled the smoke afraid to let the moment pass too quickly.

“Thank you I think? For that?” Lux tried to joke and seem nonchalant, as if his mouth on her’s had not ignited a flame inside of her. She had something unreadable in her eyes that he wanted to know more about. He liked this girl and he was hoping that she wouldn’t be gone in a year’s time like all the other assistants that had come before her.

“Are you two going to stare at each other all fucking night? If so can you pass the joint so some of us can smoke it.” Rook said startling to two out of the staring contest they didn’t realize they had been having. Both faces turned red and Kells grumbled something under his breath before passing the joint to Rook.

Lux was stumbling through the bus trying to find her bunk again. She had woken up to pee, after being passed out for god knows how long, and everything was pitch black. She made her way from the bathroom and down the hall and felt the wall until she felt her bunk and climbed into her bed again. She must have forgotten how small these beds really were because she was barely in and already backed up against the wall. Not thinking twice about it she closed her eyes and was back asleep in no time.

Rook had been fucked up when he had gone to sleep, he knew that, but he was fairly certain that he had gone to bed by himself. He slowly cracked open his eyes to try to catch a glimpse of who was in bed with him wincing at the light shining into the bus. He saw a mess of dark hair across his pillow and he nearly had a heart attack. What was Lux doing in his bed? She rolled over and yawned before snuggling into his chest as he held his breath. Her eyelids snapped open and she looked up at Rook’s face. She gasped and jumped back so far she fell out of the bunk and landed on her butt. She was so fired she just knew it.

“What are you doing in my bunk? Oh god we didn’t fuck did we? I can not afford to lose this job” Lux was suddenly rambling still laying on the floor.

“First good morning. Second we did not fuck, I went to bed alone. And last, this is my bunk. Yours is across from mine” Rook laughed at her expense. She felt like such an idiot for fucking up that badly. She made a mental note that she would never party with the boys again.

Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (#200-191)

#200: Alice Babs -- Lilla stjärna (Sweden 1958)

“Lilla stjärna i det höga, svara mig, svara mig, Kommer han som jag ska få så kär?”

“Little star up above, answer me, answer me, Is he coming, the man that I will love?”

And so we begin the top 200 with an innocent and sweet number, and which resembles the best of 1950s Eurovision. I'm not a fan of the decade, because most of the songs are a bit too old-fashioned for my taste (especially since we have the beginnings of rock-n-roll outside the contest), but Lilla stjarna is one of the better soundtrack-like songs.

Before Sweden became the superpower in Eurovision we all know and love (or love to hate), they debuted with this dainty, beautiful song that was selected internally. There's a sense of longing in the lyrics, with the narrator hoping that their loved one would return. It’s definitely a fairytale, with that classical instrumentation and Alice’s innocent voice.

#199: Domenico Modugno -- Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu (Italy 1958)

“Penso che un sogno così non ritorni mai più Mi dipingevo le mani e la faccia di blu Poi d’improvviso venivo dal vento rapito E incominciavo a volare nel cielo infinito”

“I think such a dream will never come back I painted my hands and my face blue Then suddenly I was ravished by the wind And I started flying in the infinite sky”

The original classic from Eurovision, and the biggest hit of them all. It topped the Billboard charts in 1959, won two Grammys in the first-ever ceremony in 1959 (and still the only Italian-language song to do so), and is covered and over again to this day.

Considering the lack of attention most of the songs got in the first two contests, it's possible without Nel blu dipinto di blu's commercial success, we wouldn't have a Eurovision Song Contest to speak of. Or it would've been done for by 1960, haha.

Sometimes, I forget about this song when thinking about favorites, but when I listen to the intro, it starts bringing you into its little world, where I’m actually flying! The lyrics are quite cool and imaginative, adding to that feeling.

And of course, that "Volare..." is enough to keep people singing along!

#198: Korni -- Moja Generacjia (Yugoslavia 1974)

“Mene majka moja rodi da sanjam o slobodi, U prvoj noći da čujem zveket, Da plačem sa rukom na usnama,”

“My mother gave me life to dream of freedom, The first night to hear gun sounds To cry with my hand on my lips”

World War II in Yugoslavia is not something I've learned about in depth. What I do know is that the Axis powers were able to take the whole country, and two major groups arose to collaborate with them. The Ustashas (Croatian nationalists) and Chetniks (Serbian nationalists) also both sought to destroy the other ethnic group and there was a bit of a mess all around.

(If you have any more information on this topic, let me know as I do want to learn)

Moja Generacija is a harrowing but powerful progressive rock song about those born during the Second World War, and their lives as a whole. I like the dark soundscape along with the instruments that accompanied it too. The orchestration at the chorus is especially noteworthy, because of the sweeping strings and the brass which highlight the times as a whole.

(And apparently, there's a seven-minute English-language cut, which makes it even more of a progressive rock song.)

#197: Shiri Maimon -- HaSheket Shenishar (Israel 2005)

המבט אחר והקור חודר אתה מסתתר, את גופי שובר

“The glance is different and the cold is piercing You’re hiding, breaking my body”

Israel in the 2000s wasn't the best song-wise. I can only think of two songs that were really good in that period--of which this was one of them, which held Israel's best placing this century until Toy won three years ago. And it couldn't be anymore different from the song Israel would eventually win with.

Initially, I didn't get it, as it felt a bit derivative. Even now, it has offgrown me a bit because of pop ballad structure. But what I really liked was the smooth transition between Hebrew and English, along with how well Shiri sings it. She has a really sweet tone to her voice, which really helps in conveying the sorrow of being in love with a cheating partner and having to let go of it for her own happiness.

And that dress--it has to be one of my favorite performance outfits of all time!

#196: Inga and Anush -- Jan Jan (Armenia 2009)

“Can't ya see, we aren't free?, Fixed like a tree to the holy ground, With my sound, gotta be always around, I wanna dance, don't ya stand, sister give your hand,”

"Sister, here we go!"

For a dance song, it's actually quite sedate--there isn't many moments of true boppiness, but there was something more "psychadelic" about the production and how it was put together. Either way, it works well all the same.

The sisters do a good job singing together, and I like the mix of ethno and dance music. Plus, their costumes are absolutely expensive and glamourous--I would like to wear them if I ever got the chance.

Also, for some reason, Azeris like to spam the comments on this song and claim that the Armenians "stole" their traditional clothing and music. Considering the two countries' proximity, I'm not so shocked about their similarities, but if Azeris would like to share a bit more of their ethnic music, it's always welcome!

#195: Sabina Babayeva -- When the Music Dies (Azerbaijan 2012)

“You, you are the best of me The reason that I believe, so don't leave me now...”

(Yes, Azerbaijan can send ethnic-influenced music. Hehe.)

Azerbaijan’s host entry when they brought the contest to Baku is a bit of a standard ballad, but with an ethnic twist. The use of balaban really highlights the melancholy of the song, and the mughum vocals pierces one's soul when performed.

I could feel how Sabina sings every word, pleading with her lover to stay with her despite it all. And that doesn’t begin to add with the beautiful LED dress, adding to the drama of the song as we see it in white, but it gets overlaid with sparks, shades of turquoise, and its final form with reds and oranges. That was a particularly beautiful moment.

A lot of fans believe this was the song that should've won it for Azerbaijan, and I can't disagree! This is a gem indeed.

#194: Milestones -- Falter im Wind (Austria 1972)

“Tanz um die Lichter, Schmetterling, Deine Farben flammen auf, Tot ist die Nacht, in deinem Tanz, Ist das Leben hell wie Tag”,

“Dance around the lights, butterfly Your colours flame up The night is dead, in your dance Life is bright like the day”

My first forays on pre-1990s Eurovision was with the British blog, Lovelovepeacepeace. She would recap every year between 1968 and 2000, and 1972 was one of the years I went through the songs because of her. Coincidentally, I got to like Falter im Wind as much as she does.

It definitely fits with the hippy era, in terms of folk music and the general aesthetic. There's even a prominent (weird little) flute motif throughout. The lyrics talk about the life or a butterfly and how it shouldn't go to far into the sun. A bit strange, considering what most other songs are about, but it's a nice and gentle sentiment (with a message not unlike that of "Waterfalls", how strange).

Austria is not usually known for their highlights, but this is definitely one of their best (and a personal favorite of mine). Feel free to go an a road-trip playing this (though not with the studio cut--that's a bit slower)!

#193: Roger Bens -- Femme dans ses rêves aussi (France 1985)

“Mélodie, mélodrame, sourire et puis larmes Amoureuse ou sans âme, elle est d’abord femme...”

“Melody, melodrama, smile and then tears In love or without soul, first of all she’s woman”

ESC 1985 is notable not only because of a certain ripped-skirt incident, but also because they have a live album with the first eleven songs of the contest. Among these is the French entry, which has one of the best orchestrations of all-time, thanks to Michel Bernholc's arrangemnt.

(And because of that, it is my most-listened to song on Spotify)

The violins primarily make this song what it is—there are synths in the studio track, but don’t pack the same punch. The bass really provides some depth, and the brass at the bridge really sells the whole thing home.

The sense of drama in the song also includes the lyrics about being a woman and embracing her in all the ways. Despite the occasional eyebrow-raising and lip licking, Roger sings this with gusto.

To add to this, where is Roger Bens? This was the last known sighting of him and he is presumed to be dead.

#192: Nina Zilli -- L'Amore È Femmina (Out Of Love) (Italy 2012)

“If you were my king, would I be your queen?, Stop breaking up my heart, you kill me – boom boom boom”

No, she's not Amy Winehouse resurrected for one night, but Nina Zilli! She also competed in Sanremo that year, and Emma (see #223) won it with the harsh but determined "Non è l'inferno".

Beyond the retro music and Nina's bouffant on the night, I didn't notice any similarities to Amy Winehouse. This doesn't mean "L'amore e femmina" have its own charms--it falls into the jazz theme that "Madness of Love" (#232) continues, but is the opposite in more than one way.

The English-Italian mix is a but clunky at times, especially in the choruses but it doesn’t take away from the attitude this song brings. I love the jazzy vibes and how Nina sings it with a sense of sassiness and charm. Her backing vocalists really help with conveying the mood, and don't do a bad job when the song goes back to Italian!

(As for the two Sanremo songs in question, I prefer Non è l'inferno to Per Sempre--the former is quite determined, and I really like the lyrics. Though I think the latter would have more appeal in terms of themes, even it's a bit more derivative musically)

#191: Hovi Star -- Made of Stars (Israel 2016)

“Dance with me like we are made of stars...”

This is one of the first songs which got me into Eurovision. I would put this on repeat over and over again, because it's just so beautiful. (Or it was because it's Israeli, haha. Another country bias of mine will appear later.)

The first version of Made of Stars was a trashy and dull dance song, but the rework into a ballad makes it more magical. It’s serene yet touching, with a calming piano motif and a dramatic crescendo at the end.

The staging of Made of Stars also helps; while I'm still put off by the LED face when the backing vocalists sing "you hypontize me", everything else just works. The otherwise starry LEDs, the hoop dancers, and Hovi's glowing presence make this into a sweet, albeit overlooked package.

Reading a biography is always an unusual experience; to think that a person’s entire life can be churned into a dense collection of words and folded between two pieces of cheap paper, even a life as eventful and dramatic as Pablo Neruda’s. It is an experience that is both humbling and unnerving, for it makes one reflect on one’s own life.

Pablo Neruda was born Ricardo Eliecer Neftalí Reyes Basalto in Parral Chile, where “the vines curled their green head of hair.” His mother died two months after his birth; her grew up with his grandparents; then lived whit his stepmother; went to Santiago for college; joined the government so he could travel; traveled to Rangoon in Burma; then India, before removing to Spain where he helped refugees escape to Chile from Franco’s fascist regime during the Spanish civil war; went back to Chile; was exiled for his communist ideals poems and writing; lived as a fugitive and returned to Chile a hero; died in Chile because of cancer, during a U.S. sponsored military coup that ended up taking thousands of innocent lives and placed a dictator in office that was two rule Chile for over a decade.

Through his life, Neruda taught me what being an artist means:

The quality and texture of his work was perpetually changing. He kept playing and experimenting with different styles, techniques, and ideas, making the entire body of his work rather uneven. Critics hated this, but Neruda didn’t care. Sepulveda, the best-selling Chilean novelist even wrote:

” I share Borges view of Neruda that he was uneven. All poets are uneven, of course, but Neruda’s poetry underwent some peculiar leaps. How could the same man write both “El hondero entusiasta” and the “Odas elementales?”

To me, this willingness to experiment and contradict himself is precisely the reason Neruda’s work is so refreshing. He wasn’t afraid to disprove or question himself ideologically or stylistically, despite his fame. His constant play and experiment are precisely what enabled him to go from writing poems of love to starting a revolution.

Perhaps that is as true for life as it for poems.

He was poor for the majority of his life, even when he became a famous and successful poet. The necessity of living-paying bills. Renting an apartment—that was paid for by his “day job” as a senator. A position he hated for the majority of his life. But he didn’t let the mundane regularity of daily life get to his creative spirit. He continued to write, experiment and read every day just to keep his soul nourished. Even when he was a fugitive, he continued to write in dark closets and unlit spaces, letting his words convey the light.

He stood up for what he believed in, even when it means that he would lose his job and freedom. He died a disillusioned man; as a communist, he was shocked when he learned about Stalin’s crimes and having seen the effects of the US invasion of Latin countries and Vietnam (directly or through proxy) made him wary of capitalism. Despite the disillusionment from politics, he kept fighting for the rights of everyday workers till his dying breath. Even when it meant going to jail or facing torture. Neruda never sacrificed his ideals.

Even at the lowest points of his life, he never lost the passion for living. He kept throwing parties and meeting with friends, even when he was in danger of being thrown in prison He didn’t let fear conquest his life or art.

He had an extensive library collection and loved to read. But he wasn’t reading books on about books; he was reading to be inspired. At the ceremony at the Universidad de Chile on 20 June Neruda exclaimed: ‘I’m not a thinker, and these collected books are more reverential than investigative.”

He learned early on in his life to look at the world through symbols. Growing up in a pioneer town where no one spoke the same language, the shops around him were strewn with symbols instead of words. So instead of seeing J.B Hardware company, you would see a giant hammer; a cobbler’s shop would be represented with a shoe; and so on. The world around him was all represented in symbols rather than words, much like his poetry.

He never lost his sense of playfulness and humor. As he was fleeing Chile on a horse, crossing the mountains while every cop in the country looking for him, he saw a tree and was inspired to write a note to his hunter:

“How good the air smells In the Lilphela Pass Because the shit has not yet arrived From traitor consoles Videle’s ass.”

He loved writing and creating art for art’s sake. Of course, he enjoyed fame and lavished in it; but at the beginning of his writer’s life, he had to fight his father and alienate himself from his family to pursue art. Later on, people tried to box him as a “love” poet or a “revolutionary” poet but he still kept evolving and changing; even when the critics wrote about how terrible his work was. He kept his eyes on his writing.

Neruda’s favorite color was green. He thought it was the color of hope and life. And so, he always wrote in green ink. His life, like there color green, has given me hope. Hope that despite all the challenges that life throws at us, we need to keep the child in ourselves alive and keep moving forward, with courage and love.

Independent Filmmaker Mike Jittlov Readies His New Feature-Length Film Article by MICHAEL STEIN

The Anaheim Room is one of the largest auditoriums in the Anaheim Hilton Convention Center, site of LA CON2, the 36th Annual World Science Fiction Convention. On September 1, 1984, at 3 pm it was filled to capacity with excited film fans. Most had come early to claim the best seats. Some still filtered in from other program activities.

Instinctively, the audience shifted its attention toward the back of the room where a thin young man in a green cotton jacket, white T-shirt and jeans made his way briskly toward the stage. Recognizing their hero, the crowd roared its approval, coming to its feet in unison.

Leaping the steps and moving to center stage, the man in the green jacket discarded a defective microphone, then politely addressed the still-applauding audience from where he stood. The room quieted as quickly as it had erupted.

"Hi," he said. "I'm Mike Jittlov. I make movies."

And the room roared once again with appreciation.

Mike Jittlov is an independent filmmaker and renegade Hollywood animator. An eccentric to some, a dedicated, uncompromising artist to others, he is best known among his friends and fans simply as The Wizard of Speed and Time.

Followers of Jittlov's films have seen most of his works before, either at convention presentations, on TI; at film festivals or wherever they might catch him on tour. But that day in Anaheim was a special occa-sion. With him he had brought a reel of exclusive footage from his new-est project, a feature length version of his classic short, The Wizard Of Speed And Time.

After fielding some questions from the audience, Mike showed a few of his earlier works, then instructed the projectionist to run the five minute sneak from his new film. Soon the screen at the front of the auditorium was filled with the grinning face of The Wizard. Only this time, somehow, it seemed larger and more real than ever before. Speed and Time became magical expan-sions of another reality as The Wizard zoomed across countryside landscapes, picking up a stranded hitchhike, then performing amazing feats of transportation while defying every known law of physics and gravity as he approached the city limits of Los Angeles.

The audience laughed and applauded spontaneously as The Wizard sprinkled magical sparkle-dust over a group of deserving feminine fans. Then they watched with open-mouthed surprise as Jit-tlov, playing himself, rode his amazing, motorized suitcase, at super-speeds through the streets of Hollywood, evading a gang of pursuing thugs, and swooping un-der a parking lot barrier in his race against time. But, all too soon the sample trailer ended and was left flipping on the projector. Needless to say, the encore applause contin-ued thunderously until the mild-mannered filmmaker promised to show the reel att least one more time.

Just another day in the life of Mike Jittlov ...

It all started back in 1971. Jittlov, then a math major at UCLA, needed to fulfill an art requirement, so he signed up for an animation course. From that point on the young filmmaker's life took a sharp left turn into the world of cinematic imagination.

Throughout that semester Jittlov spent every extra hour before and after class working on his first animated assignment. What resulted was Good Grief, a four minute comedy short dramatizing, in dream-like fashion, a child's fear of the dark. The student project received rave reviews and subsequently became an Academy Award Nomination finalist.

Two years after Good Grief, Jittlov created his second Academy finalist, The Interview, in which a pixilated black-caped figure called "The Fantum" (played by Jittlov himself) terrorized a hapless television journalist. Then came Swing Shift, a light-hearted but surrealistic commercial created for Broadway of Hollywood, in which clothes and shoes danced a magical mid-night hoedown through the store.

Animato, Jittlov's third Academy qualifying short began as a show reel for fashion houses. Using the technique of kinestasis, the film-maker created the appearance of movement by manipulating photo-graphs and cutouts in front of an animation camera. But Jittlov grew frustrated with the project and in the second half of the film, his mounting imagination took over. Amid images of stylish clothes, a jet plane flies by flapping its wings and a green-jacketed genie en-counters an armada of fantasy over a night-lit Los Angeles.

When Regis Philbin reviewed Animato on the ABC evening news, a Disney producer just happened to be watching. As a result Jittlov was invited to create a part of Mickey Mouse's 50th Anniversary TV Special. His three "Mouse Mania" sequences, featuring a stop-motion parade of 1,000 Disney toys marching through a psychiatrist's office, became the hit of the show. "Animation is filmmaking that one person can do, who doesn't yet have access to studio budgets or crews," remarked Jittlov, referring to his earlier works. "The short films have gotten people to notice what I can do just on my own. With a feature budget and other personnel, I have created a live action adventure with truly incredible effects, and more importantly, with a powerful, positive story that will send audience's spirits soaring."

He adds, "To do special effects you have to be a perfectionist, and perfectionism inevitably leads to idealism. I feel that I have a moral obligation to make the world better through what I do. And I have found out how to do this through the magic of motion pictures."

For Jittlov The Wizard Of Speed And Time is his first big step in that direction. It is also the perfect vehicle for exercising his multiple talents as an animator, write, actor and director. However, being "over-qualified" is not always an asset in the hard-nosed world of Hollywood--as the young filmmaker was soon to find out.

"It was hard at first, raising the financing," admitted Wizard producer Richard Kaye. "It was difficult for many people in the film community to believe that Mike could perform so many different functions."

Even though Jittlov first committed the idea for The Wizard Of Hollywood (its original working title) to paper as far back as 1981, it was not until the Cannes Film Festival of '83 that Kaye met executive producer Don Rochambeau and was able to find investors for the film on a pre-sale and limited partnership basis. But from then on things began to move as fast as The Wizard himself.

Jittlov and Kaye opened production offices in June, then after eight weeks of preproduction, went straight into principal photography on September 22 with Mike either directing and acting or manning the camera. After 18 weeks of location shooting with full cast and crew in and around the Los Angeles area, second unit photography immediately continued its own production schedule. Traveling across large stretches of the western United States, they lensed lakes, deserts, mountains, and forests as part of the cross-country "speed" sequences which feature the pixilated Jittlov as The Wizard. Mike then returned home to add the special effects animation for those sequences.

Last December, Jittlov was putting his final touches on The Wizard, remixing the sound, the original orchestration by John Massari and polishing up the editing. He and producer Kaye expect to release the 35mm widescreen film nationwide later this summer.

For Mike Jittlov this feature-length production has been the culmination of many years of experience in every area of independent filmmaking. In some ways it breaks all the rules. In other ways it is the common demoninator between the artist and the industry. Although admittedly autobiographical, Jittlov feels the film speaks for all creative individuals who find themselves frustrated by "Catch 22" business systems. And hopefully The Wizard Of Speed And Time will afford Jittlov with the overall recognition he deserves, and restore the image of the Renaissance man, even in this day of mindless specialization, to a place of respect in our society.

( words drip like honey off her tongue and her smile lights a fire in your stomach. but she is n e v e r yours, she is never anyone’s. she is a walking storm - a storm that will change the world, but destroy something PRECIOUS in the process. )

margot jacqueline emery was born in seattle, washington. her father passed away when she was only five years old and she doesn’t remember much of him. her mother spent the next sixteen years of margot’s life trying to find a new rich husband and had varying degrees of success with her next five marriages. margot doesn’t remember much about those men either tbh and she’s not very close with her mother

she’s incredibly charming like she has a naturally bubbly personality and she’s a huge flirt which can sometimes get her into trouble if people take it the wrong way

she’s also a lil bit promiscuous like she rly rly likes boys a lot and likes kissing them (who can blame her tbh)

she plays daphne dixon on university ! daphne is p much the opposite of margot - she’s shy and sweet and unassuming

daph is at usc studying pre-med and she’s a little afraid to let loose

daphne is bisexual but comes from a christian family where it was not allowed. she is currently learning how to accept her sexuality and very taken with muse k (@muse k i’m very excited abt this angst ok)

margot is rly worried abt playing an lgbt+ character accurately and so she’s been doing a lot of research, going to campus meetings and stuff so she can educate herself

some other random stuff abt margot: she’s a die hard feminist, she’s still taking classes at ucla when she can bc she wants to graduate on time, total hopeless romantic, her fav nickname is mj (as in margot jacqueline), she LIVES for the beach, she’s scared of the dark

Steinlager 2: On board Sir Peter Blake’s refitted Whitbread champion

Steinlager 2 was famously skippered by the late Sir Peter Blake to win the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race, and is now owned by the New Zealand Sailing Trust. Nigel Sharp steps on board

In 22 May 1990, Steinlager 2 – skippered by Peter Blake and crewed by 14 fellow New Zealanders – crossed the finish line off Southampton to win the fifth Whitbread Round the World Race, with an overall time almost a day and a half quicker than the next boat.

Having dominated the race from beginning to end, Steinlager was first to finish and the winner on corrected time of all six legs: an unprecedented and unsurpassed feat in Whitbread/Volvo history. Twenty-three boats took part in that race. Whereas in the early Whitbread years many competitors considered it more of an adventure than a race, by the fifth edition they were taking it very seriously indeed.

Steinlager 2 was designed by Bruce Farr with significant input from Blake, who was able to draw on his own experience having taken part in all four previous Whitbread races. Farr initially produced a ‘base’ design following tank testing at the Wolfson Unit, the costs of which were shared between four syndicates.

Four designs were then developed to suit the different needs of each syndicate to create Steinlager 2, Fisher & Paykel (another Kiwi entry, skippered by Grant Dalton), The Card and Merit.

It was initially intended that they would all be sloop rigged but, as this race would include more downwind sailing than the previous races, Blake asked Farr to investigate the relative speed potential of a ketch. Farr’s research revealed that a ketch had potential to get around more quickly – but Blake then discovered that Dalton also favoured a ketch.

Blake went one stage further by suggesting that a fractional ketch might have a rating advantage over a masthead ketch and he persuaded a reluctant Farr to alter Steinlager’s design again.

As it turned out, Steinlager 2 nearly never existed. After the pre-preg composite hull was completed in the autumn of 1988 it was found to have delamination problems that were so catastrophic it had to be rejected and disposed of.

But thanks to the unequivocal support of the sponsors a new hull was built (often referred to as Steinlager 2b), and just 17 weeks later Auckland’s Southern Pacific Boatyard launched the completed boat.

After five months of sea trials – sometimes with Fisher & Paykel as a sparring partner – Steinlager 2, which by now had acquired the nickname ‘the Big Red’, was shipped to Europe. She took part in the Fastnet Race, winning just two minutes ahead of Fisher & Paykel.

Steinlager’s winning ways continued with the Whitbread Race, though the first leg half-a-day victory over Merit into Punta del Este would turn out to be their biggest leg win. Fisher & Paykel finished barely half an hour behind them in three of the subsequent legs, and the margin on the Fremantle to Auckland leg – the one they both wanted to win more than any other – was a little over six minutes.

On the last leg Steinlager might have lost her hard-won advantage when, four days out of Fort Lauderdale, a chainplate for a mizzen shroud and mainmast backstay failed. It was only quick thinking helmsman Brad Butterworth’s immediate gybe that saved the rig.

After the race finished Steinlager 2 remained in the northern hemisphere for two decades, under three different owners. She was variously known as Safilo and Barracuda before Swiss sailor Stefan Detjen bought her in 2003.

He restored her original name and distinctive original livery, sailing her six Atlantic crossings (including a Huelva to La Gomera race record), three Middle Sea Races and various Mediterranean regattas. She also took part in some Whitbread reunion races, including the Volvo Legends regatta in Alicante in 2011.

The New Zealand Sailing Trust had been established in 2008 to purchase Lion New Zealand – the boat Peter Blake had skippered in the 1985/86 Whitbread – and use her to provide sail training experiences for young New Zealanders.

There was a growing feeling that it was time Steinlager also returned to New Zealand and the following year the opportunity to purchase her arose, so the Trust immediately did so. She was then sailed back to Auckland via the Panama Canal.

Steinlager needed a good deal of work to make her fit for her new role and this was entrusted to Yachting Developments at Hobsonville just outside Auckland. The original accommodation included a semi-enclosed nav station on the centreline beneath the cockpit and a single heads compartment abaft.

Otherwise she was almost completely open plan with pipe cots outboard and forward, and with a U-shaped galley (complete with an athwartships gimballing cooker) on the centreline forward of the main mast.

The number of pipe cots has now been doubled to 30, each named after one of the original crew or another prominent Kiwi yachtsman of the time, and the galley has been moved further abaft. While a single heads compartment might have been considered adequate for 15 all-male Whitbread sailors, it certainly wouldn’t be for the boat’s new role and so two more have been added.

Steinlager’s original engine was a 130hp Volvo Penta 4-cylinder diesel, fitted forward of the galley. This was replaced with a new engine of the same model in 2005. Yachting Developments later overhauled it and, to avoid the need for an excessively long shaft, moved it aft to a position under the cockpit.

Refit and retention

Other refit work included a new electronics package, new lights throughout the interior and the installation of a Maxwell VC3500 capstan. Almost all of the original deck gear has been retained, including the three coffee grinders, which drive the Barient winches.

When Steinlager was built, Blake had two sets of spars made for her. He used one set for the first three legs of the Whitbread race and then replaced them with the spare set in Auckland. The original set remained with the boat when she was sold, and in 2009 Detjen unstepped the second set and replaced all suspect components with those from the original spars.

During the Yachting Developments refit, the spars were overhauled with all fittings undergoing crack testing and being repaired or replaced as necessary.

New sails were produced by Doyles in Auckland using Stratis sail cloth and replicating the look of the originals – 110 of which had been made for the Whitbread campaign. With the work complete, Steinlager was relaunched in November 2013 to take up her new role. Since then, the focus has been on taking New Zealand schoolchildren on voyages all over the Hauraki Gulf.

Despite her years Steinlager is, on average, out sailing every other day of the year. Almost 1,000 children had the opportunity to sail on her last year. They’re all too young to remember the phenomenal achievements of Blake and his team almost 30 years ago, but sailing on this iconic boat is a chance to get inspired by a true Kiwi legend.

Hi, I am 19 years old and a full time college student. My mom works two 25-30 hour jobs but does not get insurancew through either jobs. I am bulimic and can't get any private insurance because of my bulimia and also cannot afford it. I paid out of pocket to have a physical and my doctor said I need to be hospitalized, as I am in critical condition. Problem is, I have no idea how to get insurance. Is it possible for me to get insurance? Should I speak with the Department of Health and Social Services or my college counselor? I am not lazy and not looking for free help and am willing to put all the money I make towards insurance...I just really want to get help before I die.
