I'm caught up with manga rn so I wanted to share a few thoughts (ramblings) on egghead arc zolu too. first, this convo after the crew leave wano and find out abt what's gone down in the reverie, and wrt to vivi specifically,

I do agree with some stuff I've seen about how using ace here as an example was not exactly the best one since we know how that ended up. that said, I think it's lowkey sweet that zoro still remembers so clearly what luffy said back then and well, he's not entirely wrong.

as I've mentioned in other posts before, zoro takes the crew and his own role in it very seriously. these are his companions, his friends and family I daresay, and part of his duty as both crewmate and friend includes keeping them all check and safe whenever it's needed. especially luffy, as we've seen in different occasions (water 7, thriller bark, punk hazard, wano, just to name some arcs with relevant moments related to this). storming into marijoa, THE world government/navy stronghold, without any information and/or plan whatsoever is a bad idea all around.

luffy may be impulsive and stubborn at times, but he isn't really an idiot and he knows zoro's right even if he doesn't like it. hence this:

ngl I love how grumpy luffy is at zoro here. these two are usually on a similar wavelength but there are key moments where their approach to things differ, and it ultimately works bc it's kind of... a complementary thing. making up for what the other lacks or needs to hear in those moments. I believe they bicker relatively less than other straw hats do in comparison (precisely bc of how similar they are imo) but it's funny when it actually happens. I can so easily picture luffy here fuming and stomping like a brat also being seconds away from asking for a divorce

this one's perhaps on a more delulu note on my part, but I like that zoro brought up ace in specific bc he was there both times when ace and sabo asked the crew to take care of luffy. it was curious to me that in the former case, zoro was kinda shown with this "!" reaction sign and later when it came to sabo in dressrosa, he was the one to fondly point out he sounded just like ace did in alabasta (and the "!" is back).

(the fact that sabo handed zoro luffy's vivre card there also lives in my mind rent free btw)

so yeah. zoro's definitely not one to mess around when it comes to the crew and luffy's safety, though he may get a handful of grumpy straw hats (captain included!) for it.

another thing, and do bear with me bc I might be reaching once again is... the break up flashback between shanks and buggy. I pretty much forgot to make a post about water 7/enies lobby zolu bits (too busy crying over robin, I admit) but this actually reminded me of it.

the context and personalities involved differ from each other, yeah, but I believe this shows exactly how easily it could've been for luffy and zoro to have a bad ending of sorts under different circumstances.

I can't say for sure how much of whiskey peak was intended to affect zoro and luffy's relationship later in the manga (I personally find some parts of it kinda goofy), but it at least served as an early example that they're not immune to suffering from misunderstandings and miscommunication issues. though unlike shanks/buggy, the fact that they're more similar than they're different and their differences tend to complement each other's likely works more in zoro and luffy's favor. still,

if luffy hadn't listened to zoro here - if he'd failed to stay true to what's expected of him as the captain (and being the captain is related to his journey to become the pirate king), to stay true to the kind of man zoro believes him to be and that he chose to join in that marine base, we could've had a similar scenario to shanks and buggy's imo. more so when you consider that zoro's as headstrong as luffy is, that he's been mistaken for the captain and now has turned out to have the color of the supreme king too. hell, zoro used to be a bounty hunter, is still called the pirate hunter. I don't believe it'd be easy for zoro to leave despite what he says, or that they'd become enemies per se, but it isn't (or wasn't) out of the realm of possibilities. zoro has admitted that he sees no point in being a pirate unless he's part of luffy's crew as well.

as it is, the fact that luffy values zoro's imput and listens to him whenever the need arises is such an important part of their relationship. as loyal as zoro may be, as great as his displays of that loyalty are, they only exist bc luffy cares for him just as much and has earned them through his actions. I love it!

last thing before this gets too long is this:

the mobile app's pic upload limit is my enemy so I can't share it but I also liked the page before this one, where luffy asks zoro if he needs some help, to which zoro tells him to focus on kizaru instead.

this is such a great showcase of how much they've grown in terms of strength - that zoro can take on one of pre-timeskip luffy's strongest foes now, and that luffy himself is no longer unable to do anything against enemies like kizaru. and yknow, I find it special that luffy can go against him now considering kizaru was the one who almost killed zoro in sabaody - one of those instances in which luffy was genuinely worried, upset and feared for zoro's safety to the point he was actually all teary when rayleigh managed to save him.

I would've liked to see zoro's reaction to nika!luffy since he was knocked out in wano when it first happened, but I suppose he's already seen the wanted poster and his lack of reaction now isn't that out of character probably. godly power up or not, that's still his silly gremlin captain ig. can't wait to see what else is in store for these guys in this arc and onwards!

**TW: Substance Abuse**Off the bat: So before I even really began the reading, I was channeling Hey There Delilah by Plain White T's. So idk if that is relevant somehow. I was thinking of a lot of early 2000s songs. I feel very eager and excited. So maybe some of you left home behind to chase your dreams in someway. So, every win is a little bittersweet. Honestly, its such a vibe rn. I'm feeling chill, room is dimly lit, there's thin swirls of smoke coming from the burning sage...

4-card spread: Ace of Disks, The High Priestess, Prince of Cups, 7 of Disks. Bottom of Deck is Knight of Wands.

So, for context I'm using The Urban Tarot Deck. I feel like the imagery really helps with this pile. Its a Thoth inspired deck so the names for the cards are a little different. I read Knights as Kings and Princes as Knights.

All right, so right away I feel kind of confined. I don't think you would have had a horrible life or situation but it would not have been all that you needed. You would continue secretly dreaming of the life that you truly want. Whatever that means to you. I say this because the woman on the high priestess card looks very dreamy. Like she stole away and ran herself a bath just to have a few moments of solitude. But with the "knight of cups" right next to her--which is another card that can signify illusions, fantasies, daydreaming--it feels like she's dreaming of what could have been. And what could still be!

I always read this knight of cups as an amateur filmmaker. Someone just starting out, perhaps a little pretentious, but their intentions are in the right place. The fact that its a card that isn't fully mature, like a king of cups for instance, makes it seem tangible. So the woman isn't jumping to the ultimate end goal, but what could reasonably happen. This dream just lives in her head. Something she keeps for herself.

This is supported by the ace of disks (pentacles) and the 7 of disks. The 7 of pentacles can show patience as you wait on your investments or considering whether you invest or not. Aces are new starts. So, you would still be thinking about whatever alternative option you rejected to stay. Maybe you would know its still on the table and that's why you toy with the idea as a contingency plan. You know your growth is being stunted. Honestly for this group I think you were meant to leave. I don't think you would ever have been able to throw away this opportunity.

The king of wands is passionate and action oriented. This is how you would yearn to be. An energy like this cannot be contained. For some of you this may be referring to leaving a family dynamic or hometown behind. Right under the king is the 8 of cups reversed. With the imagery, I'm getting substance abuse problems. Maybe its common where you're from, alcoholism in particular. With it reversed, I think you would want to cut ties once and for all. Like just ghost friends, cousins, maybe even a partner. Like its the sort of thing where there may be all this lore associated with your name back home.

You will see what you could turn out like and decide to just go. For some this could relate to a job too. Maybe you see how the job consumes people around you, people lose relationships, some may get depressed, start drinking. You might have "noped" out of that and decided to carve your own path.

For those resonating with more of a family dynamic, I think you might experience some kind of loss. The kind of loss that acts as the straw that breaks the camel's back. Like I'm hearing "well, if Granny G/GG ain't here anymore, wtf am I doing here?" For others you could experience some kind of deep betrayal like a cheating spouse, a backstabbing best friend. And it will just make you go "fuck it" and choose yourself. You might not even be about all that lovey-dovey crap anyway.

Oracle Message: The oracle cards basically repeated the same message: Imposter Syndrome, Forever a Phoenix, and Emergence. Its literally what I- like look at this: "Sometimes you can't save it. Sometimes you have to take what's left and what lessons you have learned and simply just watch the rest burn to the ground." (Forever a Phoenix) The message of feeling confined comes up as well. The emergence card depicts a butterfly woman emerging from her cocoon. It's giving...I REST MY CASE.

Pile 2

Off the bat: A lot of you could be watching for an academic or professional situations. It reminds me of when I had to choose another school over my first choice. In hindsight, that was the best decision I could have made. I now can truly understand the saying "thank god for unanswered prayers." A move could be significant in someway so maybe some of you relocated or chose to stay where you are.

4-card spread: 9 of Wands, Wheel of Fortune, The Moon, The Hanged Man. Bottom of deck is The Fool.

I immediately started to feel a lot of anxiety. My chest feels kind of tight. If you hadn't left maybe you would have dealt with a lot of anxiety or panic attacks. I feel like the environment would have been stifling. A lot of major arcanas in a spread can sometimes signify stability or a lack of change. So if you are watching for a professional situation (academic counts too), you might not have progressed. This could look like never being given promotions. For others I am getting a combo of work and school like a dance academy or something. In a situation like this may always skip over you when it comes time for assigning solos. There is also a lot of romantic energy coming through but please consider how it resonates for your situation.

I also think something about remaining in whatever this is, would have caused you to doubt yourself. The moon and the wheel of fortune side by side could hint at emotional or mental instability. While I do read the wheel as a positive card, because it is something that is always turning, it can also represent a certain predictable unpredictability. The 9 of wands reinforces the message about being on guard. I think it would have been really exhausting to keep up with this toxicity indefinitely.

If this represents a romantic "third party" situation, the affair would have continued in the same way it was going. This applies regardless of which side of the third party you fall on. So if you were in a relationship with the person already, they would keep cheating. Or you would never be able to relax because you'd always be waiting for the next shoe to drop. Always on the look out for signs they're back to their old ways and never fully being able to trust them. No relationship can thrive in the those circumstances. So it would leave you frozen in this state of constant misery.

For others, if you resonate with being the person they snuck around with or if you were one of the many people they were entertaining, they would have kept that up, unfortunately. You would probably get resentful eventually. You may not even get any kind of title that would hint at some kind of significance to your relationship. They would not show the kind of effort that makes you go, "wow, they really value me and want to make this connection work". Nope, with the wheel and the fool. They would want to continue popping in and out with no thought to how it could throw you off balance. They could ghost. Your self-esteem and ability to ground yourself would really suffer.

This could also apply for situations where cheating wasn't the issue or at least it wasn't the only one. If the other person was rude, or controlling, or just awful, that would have continued. It would be you giving up parts of yourself and your peace to keep things afloat. They would still poster like they are "self-made" and like they're a great person.

Oracle Message: I haven't pulled anything yet but some of you may benefit from meditating. If this is something you have been practicing and wonder if there's any point, there is but the benefits are cumulative. So, you have to stick with it. Same with therapy, fitness journeys, or health journeys. Any kind of self-care. You just gotta be consistent. I am pulling from my affirmation cards deck. I'm going to insert a pic. "Today I am responsible" and "today I am at peace" came out together. My intentions were to read these cards as if they came out reversed. So with that in mind, you would have continued being in a lot drama and back and forth. The situation would be detrimental to your mental health and possibly physical health. Think a partner or friend that uses substances and so it makes it easier for you to get into. You might not get as much joy out of life and work would be unfulfilling. Overall, you would not experience much growth as a person.

Pile 3

Off the bat: I am getting more relationship and love energy. But if you are here for something nonromantic, just change the love stuff to fit your situation. Many of you are here for friends or significant others. For some of you, this reading may not be "that deep." Like perhaps this is just a crush that you moved on from and you're wondering what could have happened with them. Others you might have left a party and you're trying to quash the feelings of FOMO lol. Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls could be significant for some reason.

4-card spread: 10 of Swords, Ten of Cups, Ace of Swords, King of Pentacles. Bottom of deck is 4 of Cups.

I just want to note that the king of pentacles came out sideways. So if there is a flakey or unreliable person in this situation, they would have let you down. So for some resonating with a party or a gathering, if you wanted to stay because a friend or a crush was there, they might have ended up ditching you anyway. You could have stayed and realized this person was not even available, so perhaps they came with someone else. You might have just ended up bored, in your feelings, and way too drunk.

Next, if this was someone that was breadcrumbing you or kind of one foot in, one foot out, they have the potential to really disappoint you. I say this because of the sideways king of pentacles, ten of swords, 4 of cups, and the 6 of pentacles right under the 4 of cups. So you could have ended up feeling unfulfilled emotionally or practically (e.g. quality time). This other person could be kind of cocky, especially if they have a lot of other friend or dating options.

For others of you, staying could have led to pregnancy or children in some way. So this could be a partner or spouse that you considered staying with. A few examples I am getting: Having a child with this person, staying with them and starting a family, finding out they had a child or family with someone else.

The storyline is kind of splitting at this point. Some of this could resonate or none of it, so trust your gut. There's a group of you where things would not have been that bad. This is only for people who had a decent relationship with the person. Maybe the main issue was that you both weren't mature enough or stable enough to have a baby or a super serious relationship. This pregnancy would make you two very happy and would bring you closer together. Even if you ended up co-parenting, I think it would be okay for the most part.

Now, for the other half of the storyline...it's not such a happy ending. If something told you this person was not reliable enough to have a family with, that was likely the truth. They seem like the sort of person that would seem cool to start. They would act like they are going to step up. Think coming around your family more, being present for first ultrasounds, looking at apartments with you. I do think there would still be an air of detachment though. Unfortunately, this person gives me the vibe that they would just go cold. Like they may start off seeming bored, then escalate to "no call, no show" type of behavior, culminating in them ghosting or being very hard to reach. They aren't as ready as they seem and you would be mostly on your own. Whether this means as a single parent or them letting your relationship fall apart. They could continue posting online with their friends, when you were supposed to go to an open house, or crib shopping, or having your baby shower...you get the idea.

Oracle Message: I am pulling from a non tarot deck. I will insert a picture of the cards. It would be a lot to type out in order to explain properly. 😅You could resonate with certain cards more than others. (OMG you know what I just realized. I was getting Bubbles earlier and isn't that what Summer Walker calls her baby? If you know about her and her relationship drama, that could be more confirmation.) For some of you, you could see "what could have been," reflected in one of your friend's life. Maybe they made the opposite decision than you. The cards talking about fate lead me to believe that maybe things worked out in your best interests. In hindsight, you might be able to see how you dodged a bullet. Perhaps you would have had to sacrifice your goals, boundaries, or self-love. The other person seems really messy. The first, third, and sixth card make me think that. The first card is again making me feel like they could have a group that they run with that probably isn't the best influence. Maybe they have a lot of run-ins with the law. Impulsivity and recklessness could be the norm with this person. Also, it would probably be very hard to trust this person. Specifically, it would be veryy hard to trust they will change. You could have the same conversations and just go around in circles with no results. The trust question makes me think of couples counseling and the card next to it reminds me of individual counseling. You would probably get more out of one-on-one counseling. Whatever decision you made here was the right one.

I've been considering offering personals. I would probably put a quota on certain readings just so we are all "consuming responsibly", so to say. It would also just make me feel more a little more comfy. Boundaries were the main reason I stopped doing readings for anyone besides myself. I need to have my ducks in a row so for now it's just a thought.

hey, sorry if you’ve answered this before, but I am really struggling to find horror analysis yt channels that aren’t just “this is what happens in the movie and btw it’s about [generic one-word theme that is never elaborated on]”. Do you have any that you particularly like?

oh hmm well i like scaredy cats. they talk about a lot of movies i havent seen and probably wouldnt seek out on my own which i consider a plus. altho right now theyre doing a series of episode recaps for a canadian vampire police procedural so maybe not the best time to jump in if youre hoping for like newer stuff. good time to get familiar with their older videos tho i guess! or a good time to watch them talk about canadian vampire cops if youre into that!

i also am a rly big fan of nyx fears for particular more extreme horror stuff but i believe shes focusing on her music and writing rn. so again good time to catch up on her older stuff!

other than that jacob geller is excellent and has a lot of horror videogame analyses but i feel like everyone knows that. ragnarrox is also great for especially older and more overlooked horror games. night mind specifically talks about arg and horror unfiction projects but if thats something ur interested in at all you cant get much better than his videos imo.

and recently ive started watching acolytes of horror! i havent seen a lot of his stuff yet but i thought his video about so-called political horror that fears taking any actual political stance was really good and well articulated and helped me pinpoint why a lot of movies of that sort of subgenre really miss the mark for me.

THE SANDWICH, THE FRICKING SANDWICH, I KNOW RIGHT!! The bicorn chapter. THE BICORN CHAPTER I STG. I love it so much, it really is the climax of their arc together. I keep alluding to it latelu but I think you’ll like the analysis I’m working on rn finally properly dissecting their complementary character arcs. Btw funnily enough I myself only remembered about the sandwich/realized what it meant when reading a russian marchil fic lol 🫶 I looove how "This sweetness in my meal isn’t what I expected but it isn’t so bad, shouldn’t have looked down upon the idea" is the final metaphorical comment of the chapter and thus their arc I looove how the sweetness is optimism, it’s nice things happening in his life and him being surprised pikachu face about it, it’s like Puckpatti and Marcille taking on life with a glass half full approach, and I love how it’s also her. Kui is genuinely such a storytelling genius.

You know, sometimes I wonder like "Ok but did Kui intend marchil, on some level maybe perhaps………. Nahhhh, pshhh, haha." And then I remember how him liking blondes is apparently important and relevant (bc Kui keeps emphasizing on it) and how he sees her as if she has anime sparkles around her hair as per his shapeshifter of her, and I remember- UGH I remember like all the marchil crumbs ever and how narratively important they were to each other and all the times he risked his life for her specifically and blushed and teased (my god he has a blushing tsundere Marcille surrounded with sparkles in his head of what he thinks happens when he teases her my GOD). I’m like, Kui did you know what you were doing. KUI. KUI IS HE CANONICALLY ATTRACTED TO HER. IS THERE SOMETHING THERE.

Related to your Instagram story about support group for ‘high functioning’/low support needs autistics, I’m really frustrated because my local adult autism support group specifies that it’s for people without learning disabilities only and I asked why it was so exclusive and they said it was the condition for getting it funded by the local council (I’m in the uk) because they were ‘already funding too many learning disability groups’. I don’t think I can do much to combat this because it’s a decision made a lot higher up than me but it’s really frustrating because I really want to be in community with all kinds of different autistic people and I think people should be able to decide for themselves if the group is relevant to them. I also help run the disability society at my uni but obviously that selects for the sorts of disabled people who manage to go to uni. I would classify myself as having low support needs rn but it’s changed a lot since I was younger and I still struggle a lot in ways where I don’t always relate to other autistics at uni, a lot of whom are late diagnosed and struggle a lot with unmasking. I’ve never really been able to hide my autism and I was diagnosed quite young so I often feel a bit alone. I don’t know if you have any advice/comments to this, but I really wish there was more inclusive community with all kinds of different autistic people with different needs because I think we need to have that solidarity. -S

I'm so sorry to hear that is happening, that really fucking sucks. I agree that you will benefit a lot from being in community with a wide swathe of types of Autistic people, as all of us can -- and your experience points to how limiting and oversimplified "support needs" labels really are. Though the term may have a more pleasant connotation than functioning labels, it still flattens the Autistic experience to the point of being nearly useless. Many people who are nonverbal are relatively low in support needs; some people who can mask have high support needs, and many of us fluctuate depending on the day or where we are in life.

I think you may want to look outside of formal institutional channels. Nonprofits and government agencies will approach Autism inclusion in a very dehumanizing bureaucratic way. What you need I think is a community space made by us, and for us. Look up any local ASAN chapters in your area-- and since you're in the UK, look up Neurodiverse Self Advocacy UK as well. Selfadvocacygroups.co.uk is another place to turn. See if you can find local groups run by these organizations, and try hopping onto sites like Meetup and even Facebook to see if there are ongoing Autistic social groups happening as well. there is almost certainly something. Eventbrite also has a lot of virtual community events these days, oddly.

I know that it's a big ask to tell you to create your own groups, but after you've gotten the lay of the land in your area and gotten to meet a few people, consider organizing small hang outs for people in the community -- movie watching parties, outings to accessible spaces, attending a parade or festival together, something like that. We take care of one another, and community is a thing we build, one relationship at a time -- it's not a thing we can trust powerful institutions to give us or grant us.

And a commissioning guide of sorts, under the cut!

1. Decide what you want to commission! A character, an oc, what they’re doing, if it’s from a fic, etc. a lot of artists like when you can provide a reference, especially for an oc. If it’s for a fic, include the excerpt that you want the image to depict and any other relevant details.

2. Pick a price range. Depending on what you’re willing to spend, some artists will be available and some won’t. You want to know your max price before reaching out to an artist. Usually artists will have their prices listed on their blog and you can include or exclude based on that. If they’re not listed, send a dm!

3. Payment! Most artists take PayPal, but make sure to check. Some people take payment up front, some after completion, or something in between. I personally take full payment up front.

4. If an artist accepts your commission(they may not), there will be some back and forth about the details of the work, so the artist can get a clearer picture of what you want. Just chatting about your idea n all that. Some artists will tell you a time frame(I give an estimate based on the piece), but some don’t and it is okay to decline work with an artist based on the lack of stated time frame if you like.

5. Progress updates, which most artists will send out at an in between stage such as sketch, flat colors, etc. if they don’t tell you how they do updates, you can ask. When you get an update, most artists will allow a few changes, but can’t redraw too much without an extra fee. Another thing to ask your artist about their policies if needed.

6. Final piece, when I deliver I personally usually ask people whether they want to post it or if they’d like me to. Both can happen. At this point you can use it for any stated purpose— icons, fics, etc— but make sure to give credit!

It was a quiet night, save for the crackling of the slowly dying campfire. The moon gazed upon the fire pit with a tender glow, the wind soft and sweet.

It was perfect.

Especially considering the fact Dylan was sat alone with Ryan Erzahler, silently passing a bottle of Vodka between the two of them as they gazed back up at the moon.

How they got that bottle? Ryan had his ways. His ways being waving his “favourite counsellor” rights to pilfer the confiscated goods that Jacob had attempted to smuggle into the camp grounds.

Generally speaking, Ryan was a good guy. He was going to just toss the bottle into the lake or something, but a voice in the back of his head had suggested that this would’ve been the perfect in to get to know Dylan.

It was strange, he could never put a finger on just why he so strongly wanted to pick apart the boy. I guess deep down he just felt like there was more to him than meets the eye, not to say that what he could see was unpleasant in the slightest. Quite the contrary, actually.

Dylan, although delighted to have some alone time with Hackett’s Quarry’s finest, was shitting himself. Yeah, he’d dreamed about getting some alone time with Ryan, but he hadn’t actually planned past that point in his fantasies because he was so sure it would never happen.

So yeah, it was silent. Ryan too busy fighting his inner monologue as to why he had decided this was a good idea, and Dylan focusing on trying not to go into cardiac arrest.

Just as Dylan was about to speak, Ryan blurts all to casually into the silence-

“Have you had your first kiss?”

Dylan chokes on his own spit, “I’m sorry- what?”

“…Have you had your-“

“No- don’t worry i heard you the first time bud, but-“

“…Well have you?”

“I…,” he turns away, a pink hue tinging his sheepish face, “I don’t see how that’s relevant.”

Ryan turns to face him fully, an unimpressed look on his face as he waits patiently for Dylan to keep going. Dylan challenges his gaze.

“Ugh- fine- no, no I have not.”

Ryan’s eyes widen momentarily before resetting to their natural position.

“Why?”

“It’s not exactly a choice on my part dude,” he sighs, taking another swig from the bottle.

“But you’re hot?”

Dylan’s head flicks towards Ryan at record speed, eyes wide and cheeks flushed red. Ryan only meets him with a deadpan look, as if what he just said was completely normal.

“What?”

“I said-“

“No- no- once again, heard you loud and clear man, I just,” he looks into Ryan’s eyes momentarily and immediately turns to stare at a very interesting patch of dirt in front of his legs,”…nevermind.”

Ryan would never admit it aloud, but some part of him was proud for the way he could fluster Dylan so easily. Turns out he couldn’t take what he dished out. He filed that information away for later.

“Uh huh,” he drawls, a subtle but satisfied grin on his face.

It’s silent again, but this time the tension sits thick in the air between their warm bodies.

“I think you’re hot too. For the record,” Dylan whispers, as if he’s afraid to say it.

Now it’s Ryan’s turn to blush, the sudden confession catching him off guard as he fixes his gaze ahead of him on the embers of the fire. He’s never heard Dylan sound so…vulnerable.

He doesn’t respond, not verbally at least, but he does slowly place an apprehensive hand on top of the one next to his, squeezing softly whilst never breaking his gaze on the ashes ahead of him.

A fire died that night, but a new one had just sparked.

"Most JP bands treat their foreign fans as non existent." was sth I shouldn't have found today but it's not like i dunno. I just didn't wish to hear it rn. However I will say this, because it's been bothering me for years.

While fc stuff is sth most western fans dislike (including myself) and just accept it's sth common in Japan so they choose to ignore it, it is still unfortunately one of the biggest incomes for the bands. Whether it is available for global fans or not and whether we can be part of it or not (financially i mean), I think it's good to put that into perspective too. If it wasn't for this "politic", some bands would have disbanded way earlier than they did. Also do consider that some bands, regardless of whether they have an fc or not, do not favor one or the other. It's rare I know but it happens. Like yeah fc members get extra stuff release-wise, special lives and some even get to go on a trip with the band (not all bands do the latter one though let's be real) but as a whole, the band doesn't ignore its non monthly payers. That is very important to consider before feeling like "unless i'm paying a heavy load, i am not appreciated enough".

Another thing I'd like to point out is that, yes these people are artists and artists depend largely on people's emotions but being an artist is also a job. So we can't really be mad that these people use every method in the book to earn money. Paying the bills isn't the only thing they use money for. They need money for their costumes, mvs and tour expenses. That is a lot of money guys and if you think buying their cds and merch alone is enough you are wrong. Especially if the band isn't independent, the biggest percentage of their products' income goes to their company, not them.

As for my last point and the view of Japanese artists towards foreign fans, I'd like to point out a type of experience I've read more than once from jrockers and that is "moving on from the bands". It is really hard for a small band, or a band with fans under 20k anyway, to imagine themselves making fans outside of their immediate environment. Sure, some can argue the insecurity lies in Japanese culture as a whole, but with the years I've come to realize it's more than that. Bear with me. There are bands who are not interested in expansion abroad, sure, but you will be surprised how many actually ARE interested. The problem lies in the fact they can't trust it. Either because they themselves have never left their country before or cared to research how other cultures act, they know what they know based on word of mouth and stereotypes, OR because they met foreign fans at their lives, got excited about it and then said fans had to go so, because they had no visual proof those fans were still there, they believed they were forgotten by them. I also met a fan living in Japan a couple of years back and she confirmed that for me, that many jrockers have this fear of being forgotten or not being relevant for long. They do everything in their power to keep their relevance going so they can't depend on things they can't see and confirm they are loved on the regular, because that's a lot of anxiety to take in. They prefer focusing on what's there, cause if their venues don't fill up there, then no matter how many fans they have abroad they won't be able to sustain their dream.

So yeah before you get upset at a band for how they earn their money from fans or how they act towards different types of fans, put yourselves in their place. What would YOU do to keep your dream going and not having to live a life you hate. There lies your answer. They are not hollywood artists. They don't earn royalties from interviews and commercials the way hollywood people do, so they will never be able to quit the fc method or having to manipulate emotions a bit to keep their shit going. I'm not a fan who is able to pay often and yet every jrocker I tried approaching was really patient with me. And I personally appreciate that. Sure it's part of the business to be polite, but having had a bad experience too, among the good ones, I can tell you that won't hold an arsehole back when you find him.

Ask 2: BPP I don’t consider myself a New Jeans fan as their music hasn’t grabbed my attention yet but you sparked my interest in them so I’ve been keeping my eye out as an outsider. Holy shit their numbers are amazing considering this is their 1st comeback?? They will definitely be dominating SK this year as the Korean GP seems to like them and are paying attention to what they’re putting out. Hype Boy did amazing in the US too even though it was hardly promoted over there. Maybe this is a little too early to predict but I feel like in a year or too they will start dominating the GG scene and maybe even give BP competition internationally if their still active by then???

Ask 3: Seeing Hybe’s trajectory is crazy. From a struggling company barely able to support their artist to now having not just the biggest band in the world BTS but also New Jeans who has been a sprinting since debut, getting the 2nd fastest song to debut in Melon 100 after BTS. I’m not a fan of NJ but damn Hybe is killing the game. In just a few years they’ve established a pretty great roster of artists in Korea not even counting BTS’ global dominance and now they’re also slowly building up their artists base in Japan too. Hybe’s name carries a lot of clout now (ofc thanks in a large part to BTS) to be able to sign Techi and snatch famous former Prod48 artists. They hav stumbled a lot especially last year with LSF and trainee a but it still hasn’t changed the fact that they’re growing at a fast rate. No wonder kpop stans hate the company. I know armys joke a lot about how BH planned BTS’ career hundreds of years ago by the way that they plan albums and concepts months even years in advance but seeing the company slowly reveal their plans and acquisitions is surprising, I remember how shocked everyone was when they acquired Ithaca. It will be exciting to look back in a few years to see what they turn into and how they influence the industry.

Anon in Ask 1, aside from BTS members, the artists I'm most looking forward to in 2023, are NewJeans and Esperanza Spalding. Since NewJeans is likely more relevant for my readers in this space, I'll explain why I'm excited about more music from them this year, and I'll be using comments in all your asks as touchpoints.

"Now I see why you said NewJeans reminds you of rookie BTS."

They aren't directly comparable of course, but there are parallels. Three things made me notice BTS when they debuted in 2013:

Their music

The cohesiveness of their storyline/concept

The reaction of wider k-pop fandom/industry to the group

All three bulletpoints for BTS also hold true for me with NewJeans, and is the reason I've been into them since July 22, 2022, and why I'm excited for them in 2023. I'll work my way from bottom to top.

The Reaction of Wider K-pop Fandom / Industry to the Group

Some people think BTS weren't well known and loved in Korea until their breakout in 2016, but the reality is the reaction to BTS from nearly everyone was overwhelmingly positive. Comments from an old forum:

BTS were the definition of monster rookies, they won the rookie awards etc, and most everyone (peers, gp, and industry leaders), took notice of them and loved them. People talked about how they had a different sound, more engaging performances, and an interesting take on the school concept with songs that appealed to their age group and others. But if there's one thing to never forget about k-pop, it's how insanely hyper-competitive it is, and we all know what happened to BTS between 2013 and 2018 at the hands of k-pop stans who at BTS' debut had loved them. The stakes are higher for k-pop stans in 2023 than it was in 2013, so for anyone reading this who genuinely loves NewJeans, just be prepared. You've all already seen that NMIXX, IVE, Classy, Lapillus, etc all debuted in 2021/22 with members aged 13 - 15 under the management of a 'creepy/pedo' CEO (and ad infinitum for groups debuting in previous years), but no group has gotten more controversy for it than NewJeans, curiously only starting after their debut album pre-order numbers were released. K-pop stans are predictable because of the incentives that drive them, so for the girls' sake and your own peace of mind, try as much as possible to engage only positively in the fandom and with others.

Don't engage with the noise, which will only be amplified after YG debuts their new girl group this year. Just keep receipts. Believe me you'll have a lot of it before the year is over. And you'll need it.

The Cohesiveness and Execution of Their Storyline / Concept

(this section includes spoilers)

The biggest clue to whatever NewJeans is, is their icon: the white rabbit.

It's everywhere - in their MVs, in their outfits, in their lore and concepts, their fandom name, and in their sound which is notably both dreamy and bouncy/groovy. The way NewJeans expresses this motif in every single thing they do is easily one of the most brilliant things I've seen in k-pop. And this is partly because of how both subtle and obvious it is, and how they've taken an old tale and modernized it so it feels familiar but also self-aware.

What is this concept I'm talking about?

It's Alice in Wonderland.

Doing a full analysis of their discography so far would make this post too long and analysis isn't my forte anyway, but if NewJeans' summer release introduced fans to their sound, gifting bunnies a 'Cookie', then in their winter release NewJeans are inviting people to follow the white rabbit into their maddening, dreamlike universe. The wonderland of NewJeans is one of eternal youth and good vibes, and not necessarily Y2K as is widely believed. In my opinion.

Every group from debut Itzy to Red Velvet to XG to Triple S has tried a Y2K aesthetic and not one of them feel as nostalgic or youthful as NewJeans. Why?

From the straight unadorned long black hair, to the inclusion of Black and queer characters into central storylines about young love, to using the bunny as a metaphor for playfulness and awareness, the expression of youth and fantasy in NewJeans is so subtle and yet pervasive to me, it's obvious it has come from the mind of someone obsessed with the idea, someone who has studied what makes someone youthful beyond the temporal sense.

Much has been said at this point about the end scene in OMG and how that is Min Heejin clapping back at her detractors (lol, k-pop stans make me laugh on a daily basis y'all), but for anyone who has actually watched the MV, it's clear that everyone (including the doctors) is said to be mad or a little insane or inside this 'dream-like reality'. Everyone, including the viewer. In Ditto and OMG, NewJeans' not only break the 4th wall, they demolish it completely. You're left wondering what is real and what is an illusion. And that's the point. With that final scene in OMG with Minji bringing the hater with her into the insane asylum, and the final scene in Ditto where an Inception-like flip happens when Ban Heeseo watches her old tapes (Heeso being a representation of their fans), the creative team at Ador has brilliantly conveyed the reality of para-social relationships fans develop with their idols, as well as enclosing their fans in their own universe and memories. Not even their haters are exempt.

It's genius.

And the really exciting thing about NewJeans is they're only getting started.

I've said before that HYBE is best at storytelling, and nowhere is this more evident than in NewJeans and BTS.

Their Music

One way I like to describe NewJeans' sound is: a return to basics.

Like BTS, NewJeans' debut style in music and choreography is primarily influenced by old school (or 90s) hiphop. The primary difference between the two groups in terms of music is that NewJeans also incorporates the mirror sound (R&B) more than BTS did at debut (BTS leaned more into R&B in 2014 and 2018), and without unnecessary rap verses typical of k-pop girl groups. In other words, NewJeans is more Aaliyah (lol) than they are Janet Jackson, but the effect of listening to their music is the same.

For example, I heard OMG and immediately thought of Paradise by BTS, a song considered by a lot of ARMYs to be the tannies' best song (it's not lol, that title belongs to UGH, or HOME if you hate the sound of gunshots). OMG has a UK Garage type beat, and Paradise is the trap + lofi expression of the same idea. For the nerds like me, Paradise's producer recently did a breakdown of how he made that song and it's worth watching.

I don't think there's anybody who disagrees with you Anon. The company has had time to prepare for BTS' enlistment and it shows. What I've always enjoyed about how BigHit manages BTS and TXT, is how they seem to prioritize music production and go in the opposite direction of where their peers are heading in terms of music/styling/concepts, and even the few times there's directional overlap, it still feels 'different'. A lot of groups will be returning in 2023: the entire SM roster, Zico, Stray Kids, etc, and I'm curious to see how HYBE will differentiate themselves without BTS.

Honestly it kinda started out as a pure vibes thing, like I just thought "hmmmm which cats to hit with The NPD Beam.. squirrelstar hhholy shiit i think i just had a vision. i didn't see anything in the vision but I had a visionnn" and it stuck. Mostly headcanon stuff, maybe some slight au territory (but wc canon is already flimsy as it is anyway, so really, it didn't change much from the originals) but the longer I though about it the more it just kinda fits in lol, especially with her torment gauntlet storyline but not entirely because of it, either -

(I do not know how coherent this'll be, or if I even say everything I wanted to, as I am. so sleepy rn) Honestly the first thing I thought after initially coming up with it is. her relationships with Brambleclaw and Ashfur gsfdsghsd. It's very common to just believe that the abuser must be The Narcissist (or that just, all people with npd are automatically predestined to be abusers no matter what) while it's actually way more often that people with npd are more likely to stay in those relationships, or get abused because *shocker* mentally ill people actually way more likely to be treated as subhuman by society and the like. And I've already saw one or two people just proclaim that Brambleclaw is a narcissist because um, *checks notes* he's controlling of his wife and extra sensitive of (oftentimes valid) criticisms of his leadership or something idk man which. uhhhhh. no can we not please + shut up forever + now I'm gonna do the opposite nobody can stop me (also happened with rainflower. and clear sky. and sol. but mostly rainflower. lord help me)

Does the right thing not because it's "what you're supposed to do or whatever idk I have no idea how any of you define it anymore", but because it makes her feel good. And even if by the end of the day she doesn't get any praise or reward for it, even if she gets shunned for it, what matters to her is that she did the Good Thing and therefore she is Good and that's what matters, and everybody else is so stupid for not seeing it. Hurm, hurm, blog thoughts... Probably gonna get a little personal, but I keep idly spinning my wheels on what I'm doing with this blog.

Like. There's the Tumblr Scare to consider. Still thinking I'll likely move my fics to Ao3, since I don't want to lose them, and I'd almost rather bet on their longevity compared to Tumblr's rn. (Especially under current ownership; maybe...just maybe....someone else should take the reign. I would love to believe staff is as kindly as ex-staff say they are, but everything abt what happened prior still keeps me nervous.)

But there's also IRL stuff going on in my personal life that's... Hmm.

As mentioned before, continuing to look into OSDD as a possible diagnosis for what I've been going through almost all of my life. I thought it was quite normal- based on where and how I entered Fandom- to have characters in your head that spoke to you. They lived your life with you, offering commentary, and etc. Funnily enough, it was only "studying" fickin that I realized there was something else going on there....and that also led to alterhumanity (and geez, did that explain twenty more things-) and THAT is what led to plurality.

...Which has also been a journey and a half, considering my therapist can only do so much. I did the MID, it's just talking about this through parts language and...basically awaiting an appointment- in some future time- to get answers. (I want them, but am unsure if I want an on-paper diagnosis... Suppose we'll see if it means the difference between obtaining specific therapy for this.)

And THAT'S only relevant cause some F/Os are also fictives. Or were F/Os that became introjects, due to the comfort they gave me. (I will not specify who, for personal reasons. If you're curious, I may be willing to entrust my system blog to those who inquire for it.)

OH, and I made it into an apartment!!! That's so incredibly new to me. Nice, but trying to catch this space up with what's needed is...tricky.

Just curious: With the Kazumakibino family AU, how does the family feel about Aogami suddenly entering their life? What's Aogami's relationship with the rest of the family? For that matter, what kind of relationship do you think V-kun and Aogami have? I personally think that V-kun and Aogami have some kind of platonic/familial love between them, but it's hard to put my idea into words. Aogami's too deferential for father-son, but he doesn't quite give off 'older brother' vibes, either. But they don't need to put their relationship in a box; what matters is that they love each other.

Like I said I imagine this AU happening in Persona settings (mostly because we need Kazuya actually being alive haha), so I don't think SMT V would happen either in this AU, Persona 5 probably happened but I don't think SMT V happened? (I want both of my boys to be happy later in renbino relationship haha, I don't want an apocalypse lol)

But hypothetically if SMT V happened or at least sort of happened? I think V-kun's parents would be concerned at first, especially Tamaki I imagine for some reason being concerned more. Because yeah, Aogami's appearance would be very sudden and what do you mean he's their son soulmate, what's going on? But if they actually had a chance to talk and understood the Nahobino thing and knowledge situation? I think they would understand that Aogami, same as them, wants the best for him and doesn't have any malicious intents towards V-kun and I think they would eventually accept him. So yeah, I think eventually they could be friends, because all of them just want to see V-kun healthly and happy! If apocalypse somehow was stopped in this scenario, then kazumaki would be inviting him for a dinner from time to time I think! :D

But yeah, this AU is happening in Persona universe so that's a slim chance that V-kun and Aogami would ever meet (except my renbino fic I'm writing rn, but it's happening in another AU where V-kun isn't kazumaki kid (or at least it isn't that relevant) and P5 and SMT V kinda blend together into one - a little spoiler haha!)

And answering your question about the type of relationship I think Aogami and V-kun has. I always considered their relationship to be more of a familial one as well. Actually I always viewed Aogami as a father figure kind of a person for V-kun? But in the AU where he actually HAS a father figure, a biological father even (Kazuya) - I think he would be more like an "uncle" type of a guy for V-kun. So like still some kind of familial bond, just I don't think V-kun would actually see him as father figure here since he has loving father already (maybe sometimes he would just call Aogami "my second dad" jokingly though!)

doing bits and bobs on the blog, obviously. rn i'm in potc hell (thank the gang lmao, s/o for dealing with me go to: @mvrtogg, @itismissswann, @norringtxn / @collectorofmuses), and i just realized that the majority of people who follow me may not have read this page (or even known it existed!), so i wanted to give two important bits of context!

1.) anne bonny walked so her archetypes could run.

i literally found out two weeks ago that anne bonny isn't stupid famous. whaaaaaat? but actually, that did shock me. maybe it's because i had two pirates phases and like research, but i've known a little bit about her since i was a kid: specifically, that she was a kick-ass pirate woman. i've learned a lot more since then, and i love to share it; i joined a group that i thought had a pirate phase only to learn that...they hadn't. and had no idea who anne bonny was outside of being a character someone before me had written as well.

it was exactly then that i realized anne bonny isn't a super famous kick-ass pirate woman and i felt like that one part of dogma. someone was trying to explain how my take on anne bonny both was and wasn't in-line with the previous writer's and it took me a while to realize they were asking what show or book i used for canon because they doubted she was the same character, despite sharing the archetypes. so. just so it's out there, here's an incomplete list of archetypes we can apply to the historical figure anne bonny, kick-ass pirate woman:

riches to rags (gave up a privileged life to marry a pirate)

the redhaired irish

girlboss/tits out for piracy (she would famously whip her shirt off in battle so men would know they'd been killed by a woman)

did it for love (left her first husband and became a pirate with her second)

it's a love story (whatever else they were, history tells us jack and anne were in love, even if i don't usually use that on this blog)

2.) what in the url?

since anne bonny isn't the kickass pirate bicon of my dreams--we'll get her there, one day!--it's relevant to also share what the fuck my url actually means. because she was a woman a pirate a woman and a pirate alive during the early 18th century, we actually don't have much record of anne speaking for herself. the most popularly known quote we have was spoken directly to jack rackham just before his execution:

if [you] had fought like a man, [you] need not have been hang'd like a dog. -A General History of Pyrates, Daniel Defoe

she said this to him because he and his men were the reason the ship had been caught and they had been taken prisoner and she took that very personally, as well she should! (it turns out that both anne and read were pregnant, anne by jack and read by their husband.) the larger thing is, she wasn't wrong: when the ship was invaded, only three people stood on the deck fighting: read, anne, and an unnamed pirate who presumably died in the struggle. everyone else was hiding below decks. read, in fact, famously fired TWICE down at the hiding men, killing one and injuring another.

the really wild part of all this, though, is the ending of anne's story. we don't know it.

anne's execution was stayed on account of her pregnancy, as was read's. read would die in prison from a fever, and presumably their child did as well; anne, on the other hand, simply...disappeared.

LGD for all its minor issues, it still was built up from s1 to some degree and was an actually engaging and fun episode all around. It felt like a DarkWing Duck/Drake Mallard story and actually was plot relevant to the DT narrative.

I’m not an expert about TaleSpin, but from what I’ve read from other fans and my friends who have watched the OG show, a lot of what that episode does with Kit isn’t exactly ideal with his established character and that’s odd considering the intention was for it to be a continuation of the og show.

Why they did this is beyond me. They had an actual plot to focus on and instead they decided to have it play second-fiddle to an admitted shoehorned idea. Like what the fuck was happening during production that no one was like “guys this is a waste of time.”

What makes it all the more strange to me is in the art book they also admitted they themselves (Frank and Matt) had no intention of doing more spin offs, but they did this anyway???? You literally could’ve done something more meaningful with this episode slot but now we’re just stuck with this episode that is an actual waste of time.

I do find it funny tho how the highlight of the episode is Dewey’s entire character arc and how it finally comes to a close. So good job DT crew, you shoehorned an idea that already didn’t matter to your overall narrative, did a poor job with it, and one your main characters from the actual show you’re writing overshadows it anyway.
