A few final notes:

Sunset is a metaphor for melancholy. When Samatoki rejects that in the third verse, he's rejecting sitting through his feelings of loss. He uses this image again later in the line I wrote as "sit around feeling sorry for yourself."

The gender and plurality of the "them" Samatoki thinks about isn't specified. While it's most likely referring to his family, the verse immediately afterward sounds like a direct reference to Ichirou and Samatoki battling to save their siblings in the TDD breakup.

"We're burning ourselves out" could also be written like "We're burning ourselves down to ash" which connects with the cigarette image.

Given the prevalence of stray dogs in hardboiled/yakuza fiction and their recurrence as an image in Samatoki's other raps, the stray dog should be understood to be Samatoki himself.

Some things about Aiko; she was born in Amegakure to unknown parents, [ I know who her parents are. ] given to a small church in Amegakure. The nuns raised her, teaching her basic ninjutsu and med-nin until she was able to learn alongside the other promising ninja—with a unique focus on spy work and manipulation.

Aiko’s childhood was spent being an orphan in Amegakure, witnessing firsthand the destruction of war. She watched the other orphans and acted as their big sister. She was always first to throw hands if someone was outta line, baring her teeth to anyone who laid a finger on any other orphan.

The Inuzuka clan adopted her, specifically Tsume Inuzuka. She is the younger sister of Hana Inuzuka and older sister of Kiba Inuzuka. She attended school and eventually became a ninja of the leaf. She became friends with various ninja of her age.

Aiko is a short woman with very long blonde hair. She has grey eyes, fair skin and painted on red marks beneath her eyes in the Inuzuka style. She has pointed and painted nails.

She wears a modified kimono with slits on either side. She has thigh-high black socks attached to heeled ninja tabi.

Hi! I love your art and have been reading a bunch of your fics. They are amazing! (my favorite is crossroads) Recently I saw a fic called Labyrinth mentioned in your authors notes, I checked your profile but there wasn't a fic called that there. I was wondering if it was still available to read anywhere? I really enjoy reading your fics and it seemed really interesting, so I was hoping I could read it

As for Labyrinth, unfortunately I deleted it a long while back, because I came to the conclusion I didn’t actually want to write it. Like at all ^^;

That fic just kinda lacked almost all the elements I normally enjoy writing about, and was me trying to write the kind of story I probably wouldn’t even read myself personally, if somebody else was the one writing it. Or at least it would be hard to get me invested in it heh.

I tried to branch outside my comfort zone, and in this case realized I’d be too bored with the story to ever bother finishing it. (I mean, even some of my friends who also frequently read my stories were a bit surprised about me trying to make it initially, as they also felt it wasn’t really my kind of thing to write)

If you want to know what it was about, short summary would be that Tenko and Hana got adopted by the Midoriyas, my bnha oc’s AU version was one of Tenko’s close friends (a non-dimensional traveller version of Kain) Tenko goes through the hero course and Touya/Dabi is there. They have a rough start but end up dating eventually....and that was kinda it? I felt it just lacked anything truly interesting to me and was just some high school drama thing I didn’t really care about, and anything I could think of to spice it up was something I’d already done and didn’t really want to repeat.

I’m already kinda kicking myself due to the fact that Crossroads and AFS ended up having a bit too much similarities, let alone me accidentally using the same term with similar meaning in both The Neighbor and Unravel OTL

So yeah, unfortunately it’s no longer available. I just felt it would be more reasonable for me to just delete it instead of leaving up a story (with my character in it) that will never be finished. I just knew I’d never want to pick it up again, unlike some fics I have in another fandom that have been sitting for a long while. I still do want to forward them, just don’t have the motivation or interest RN

You sighed, looking at the time you had your ear pressed to your phone. 40:31. Could you really expect less? Before you could return to bed, there was a knock on your door.  Is it national ‘let’s bug a sick girl’ day?

You grabbed a robe, the warm fabric hugging you as you slowly walked to the door. Turning the doorknob, you cracked the door open a bit and your eyes widen as you quickly shut the door.

Park Jimin was standing at your door, in the hallway of your apartment building and you looked like you could scare Death himself to death.

“Y/N? Could you open the door please?”

“J-Just a second.” You said, quickly rushing to the bathroom to brush your teeth and fix your bird nest of hair. You returned to the door, taking a quick breath before opening it up again.

“Hi.”

“That was longer than a second, you know.”

“I didn’t mean it literally, Jimin.”

“May I come in?”

“Oh, right.”

“I heard you were sick, and I figured I would stop by just to check up on you.”

“That’s really sweet of you, Jimin.” You could have sworn you saw him blush, but he coughed, looking away and you tried to fight the smile that wanted to peak through.

Alright, fine, you might have the tiniest, smallest, little crush on Jimin. He always did obnoxiously cute things that you couldn’t help but smile. He was clumsy, at times whiny but he was also really thoughtful, sweet and would always be a shoulder to lean on.

But a guy like Jimin isn’t one that you can keep to yourself- Not that you could do that or something.

“Are you sure you could be out of bed like this? Earth to Y/N?”

“Huh?” Jimin placed the back of his hand on your forehead, your face growing hot and he pulled away.

“Gosh, you’re burning up.” Tell me about it. You cleared your throat.

“Just lay down on the couch, I’m gonna heat up the soup Jin made.”

“Jin made me soup? I should get sick more often.”

“No! I-I mean I helped him out mostly, I really made the soup.”

“Sure, Jimin.”

“Just go lie down, please.” You did as you were told, lying down on the couch.

“Hey, Y/N, where do you keep your blankets?”

“Second door on the left.” He came back with one of your thickest blankets, covering you with it and you looked at him.

“You should take a picture, it would last longer.”

“Shut up. Where’s my soup, Jimin?”

“Oh shoot, I almost forgot.”

“Jimin, please don’t burn down my home.”

“I got this. You just lie there, all pretty and warm- I mean you could be pretty warm with that blanket, right?”

“Smooth.” He winked at you before quickly backing into the kitchen, you covered your mouth to hold in your laughter. So stupid.

You laid there, listening to Jimin opening and closing different cabinets in your kitchen. He came back with a bowl and chopsticks in each hand and you sat up.

“You like coconut curry, right?”

“My favourite soup. Maybe you did help out a little bit.”

“One day I‘ll show you.”

“Looking forward to it, Jimin.”

“Have some, it is for you, you know.” You broke the chopsticks and took a bite, instantly hit with the delectable flavours and couldn’t stop yourself from devouring the whole bowl.

“That good, huh?”

“God, Jin is a cooking prodigy.”

“Let me have a bite.”

“Nuh-uh, you can ask Jin to make some for you when you’re sick.” You said, getting your last bite but Jimin grabbed your hand and fed himself.

“You brat, that was my last bite.” You poked his cheek with your chopsticks while he began chewing.

“Tasted even better knowing that.”

“Is this how you treat the sick and vulnerable, Jimin?”

“Jin made more than one bowl.”

“Fine, you’re temporarily forgiven.”

“Temporarily?”

“I don’t deal with food lightly. Especially really good food.”

“Will you forgive me fully if we watched these together?” He handed you a plastic bag, when did he bring that in?

Your curiosity got the better of you, peering through the content and noticing there were all Disney movies. You enjoyed most of the titles, Bambi, Aladdin, Alice in wonderland but you stop when you pulled out Tangled. The Disney classic was one of your all-time favourites. It was well known amongst your friend group and it’s the only movie you would watch for the rest of your life if you had to.

“You brought these for me?”

“Yeah, I did. Am I fully forgiven?”

“I’ll tell you after the movie.” You snuggled into your blanket, watching Jimin turn on your tv and insert the disc into your DVD player.

“Can you turn off the lights too?”

“Want the whole experience too, huh?”

“It’s not too much to ask, is it?”

“The things I do for you.”

“Hush, it’s starting.” You watched the intro of the Disney castle and felt yourself getting giddy. You were easily engrossed in the movie when you felt a warm body close to yourself.

“J-Jimin.”

“I’m feeling cold, do you mind?”

“I could grab another blanket.” You suggested, about to get up but Jimin pulled you closer to him, your body half resting against his.

“No, this is fine.” You turned your attention to the movie, trying to not be so rigid against him and focus.

You quietly sang along with the songs, Jimin laughing with you at all the funny moments and your favourite scene was about to come up.

You began to sing along with Rapunzel, watching the lanterns floating around them.

“Because,” he got up to stand in front of you, all you could muster a look of bewilderment as he took a deep breath before continuing.

“I like you, okay? Don’t make me repeat it.” Uh, you just did- Wait, that’s not the point, Park Jimin just goddamn confessed to you.

“I know you probably don’t feel the same way, but I can’t keep-”

EDIT: I had a LOT to say about this episode, so this post turned out super long! OTL

Okay, so, I went into this episode knowing that we would get the Yuki Fanclub Visit, but I didn’t think they would dedicate the whole episode to this one chapter. Maybe it was fear from how the 2001 anime handled the anime only/filler type aspects for this episode, but I was weary of them doing that again. But then they did it and once again proved themselves and washed away any doubts I had about the new anime only content. I really should know by now to just trust things like this - Takaya-sensei is working with the studio this time around, after all.

So, yeah, now that those initial thoughts are out of the way, let me get right into my more specific thoughts on this episode!

The “cold open” that we got for this episode was amazing!! 

Not only did it allow for the series to have some fun with some more supernatural type elements, they really brought to life the image that Motoko had in her head about Hanajima and her house and just her as a person. This open also ended up getting a “bookend” of sorts (just with the inclusion of Megumi) and it introduces us, the viewers, to Motoko’s mother earlier than when we see her in the manga. These opening and closing scenes will work as a nice “earlier thread” to the later episode we will likely get that will focus on Motoko graduating and such. It will work to tie those contents in better with the overall narrative of the series.

This episode also makes sure to focus on the Yuki Fan Club. We see just how vast the club truly is with this scene:

And it also highlights how the club sees Yuki - how fantastical it is - with the overly princely image they have of him and showing the fan club rules on this ancient looking scroll just adds to the whole fantasy element. The manga and this episode of the reboot takes time to really establish the fan club here and how it views Yuki, which will work as great foil material to how Machi will see Yuki. So giving the viewers this detailed look into the club and the minds of the girls within the club will end up strengthening the Yumachi ship down the line and just works as a great way to flesh out the school and students within it itself. 

We get some silly and ridiculous stuff with the fan club (and sorry but Tohru looks so cute here!)

But then we also get some more serious stuff with them too. Like how we see them realizing that Hana has a “normal” house, a pretty “normal” looking bedroom, and she likes some pretty “normal” and relatable manga. We also see that the fan club and Hana have some similarities with each other in how they were viewing others (Yuki for Hana and Tohru for the fan club). Hana showed her jealousy in a different way from the fan club girls, but it was there. Hana ends up seeing some of herself in them and they end up seeing some of themselves in her. That’s important. Too often girls are brought up to think that they aren’t like that weird girl or like those popular girls or whatever. But more often than not, they will all have some common grounds. 

Refreshingly, we also see a character other than Tohru giving out some advice here - both Hana and Megumi - by talking how you can’t force love. And I love how they make sure to give this conversation time and focus, since we have the True Form arc coming up within a couple of episodes and then next season we are going to have the moment with Kyo and Kagura. All of which will have elements of this underlining theme of not forcing love (or care and attention either). So placing this episode here feels right.

Before I dive a bit deeper into the jealousy aspect on Hana’s part, I just want to talk about these images here:

First off, Hana’s room is lovely - I adore it! Next, like I mentioned before, we see one of the Yuki Fan Club girls actually relating to Hana by liking the same series as her. And I’m laughing, because I wonder if the series that fan club member is talking about is Shigure’s Summer Sigh series. It’s in the shot with the shoujo manga (second row, right) - Hana has Volumes 1 ~ 3, lmao! XD 

I haven’t had the time yet to check if the shoujo manga shown in this shot are real or not (or what their titles are), but I’m going to look into that a bit later tonight. I’m going to guess that they are probably plays on actual shoujo manga though. Specifically because the shoujo manga magazine that is shown under Hana’s bed (the bottom right photo) is titled 星とうた (Hoshi to Uta) or “Stars and Songs” which is similar to the actual shoujo manga magazine 花とゆめ (Hana to Yume) or “Flowers and Dreams” that Fruits Basket was published in.

Also, we actually got like a minute of Kyo! T-T And, thirsty Kyoru shipper that I am, I was living for this brief moment!

Tohru is standing slightly closer to Kyo (or, it looks like that anyway)! Thank you! T0T

Okay, so now it’s time to talk about the jealousy that Hana feels towards the Sohma clan in general:

This reboot rearranged content. They placed three Zodiac member introductions in a row. We saw Tohru meeting more and more of the new Sohma members, spending time with them, and not even really spending all that much time (really) with Yuki or Kyo or even Shigure. Just more of the Sohma clan. Some new fans were starting to get frustrated with this. They were tired of meeting new Sohma members, but having these past three episodes be so focused on Tohru meeting new members of the Sohma family...it really makes this episode and what Hana was feeling through it hit home. Even episodes 16 and 17, though Hana was there, the Sohmas were too and the focus was placed more on Uo and her backstory and initial meetings with Tohru and Kyoko. 

So now we have this episode and Hana is feeling jealous and as a watcher you just get it. It makes sense, because it really has felt like Hana has fallen to the wayside a bit lately. And, thinking about it, the last time we saw Uo, Hana, and Tohru hanging out, just the three of them - without a Sohma around - was probably way back in episode 8 (in the opening scene). Even then they were talking about the Sohma clan a bit, in relation to where Tohru would stay for New Years. So even back then the Sohma presence was still hanging over Tohru’s interactions with both Uo and Hana.

I like how here, in this reboot, Tohru actually finishes her sentence about Kisa and Hiro coming over. In the old TokyoPop translation of the manga, Tohru cuts herself off mid-sentence, as if she was aware of what she was saying. Here though, Tohru says it without thinking and then afterwards we see her looking at Hana, as if really realizing that Hana might be feeling lonely or left out. That she may have said something that unintentionally bothered Hana. I feel having Tohru give that look, rather than cut herself off, is a more subtle approach to this. It also just goes to show that Tohru isn’t perfect. Sometimes she says things without really thinking them through, just like anyone else, and sometimes she may not be there - 100% - for her friends like she may want to.

Finally, we get these moments where Hana gets to see Tohru without a single Sohma, at her house with Uo and Megumi and I teared up. It was a really beautiful. It also went right into this moment:

Where we learn that Hana’s weakness will always be Tohru. 

The reboot is rearranging content again by having next week’s episode be Hana’s backstory:

But I feel this will work really well. Since this episode started wrapping up with that above moment. So to follow this episode up with Hana’s backstory where we get to see why Tohru will always be Hana’s weakness is really great for story flow. It’s also a nice way to do character distribution, since we will get to see some more of Megumi as well and explore his character a tiny bit more as well. Unlike in the manga when we went a pretty long stretch before seeing Megumi again.

So, Episode 22 is going to be Hana’s backstory and we know that the True Form Arc is coming up. Will we get a three episode arc for it? Will we get Ayame’s shop? Will we get soup? Or will we get a combo of the two? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see (though I’m leaning more towards us getting a combo of the two myself).

Anyway, this reboot keeps impressing me and I can’t wait for next week! :D
