RIP Nu Metal

The Crazytown singer just passed, 49 years young. The band came and went in the early-2000's nu-metal flavored rock scene of that era. I was there to take it all in, half the world away via MTV and music magazines.

That band had more in common with Snoop Dogg than Korn, heavy on the hip hop side of all things Nu-Metal. I easily lumped them in with Linkin Park's of the genre, a bit too soft for me. I was into Korn and System of a Down and Static-X, heavier bands.

Time flies, don't it? The bullshit Nu-Metal revival from 2014-2016, never happened, it was a failed attempt by the music media to stir something up hoping it becomes a trend. No, sir! Pop punk and metalcore arrived in the years 2004-2005 and Nu-Metal quietly went away.

2024: Linkin Park gone. Static-X is a reboot with "mysterious" new singer. Last year's Sick New World festival brought some of it back. Nu-Metal is now classic rock and the nu-metal kids, mall-core's finest, can take a bow.

5-My interest: Well minus the band itself, I like to spend my free time curled up reading fanfics and talking with friends. I love also art doing digital drawing myself and like all sorts of genres of music, mainly nu-metal and rock. I also love horror films, more into the slasher genre though.

6-Trivia: I have a soft spot for birds and rodents. Big on collecting dolls or merch of things I hyper fixate on. Got a sweet tooth and overall a foody. Love juices and anything really fruity in flavor.

Also if you join him on tour he takes you to the nicest places to eat. He also does this when home, it makes him happy to see you enjoy the food so much.

“👠: how difficult is it for y'all to agree on one cohesive outfit?”

Oh man. It's kind of both easy and difficult at the same time.

Everyone who fronts (regularly) are all some flavor of alterhuman and so we desire to wear things that affirm our identities in some small way. Many of us who front a fair bit have, at the very least, some kind of accessory (or two, or more) that is personally our own. However, our fronting schedule is no schedule at all, and we tend to switch out throughout the day, so wearing the “right” accessory for the right person can be difficult.

However, overall, our system has had a number of negative experiences over our life that make us very self-conscious about physical expression. To make things harder, because of dysphoria buying new clothes regularly is difficult for us. Further, we’re autistic and some of us have texture/touch aversions others in our system, do not. Finally, while we all very in gender, our gender expression leans more androgynous to masculine as it helps with gender dysphoria for the most of us. Those and some other things related to our mental health subdues our comfortability with physical expression relating to clothing choices.

Also, a lot of people in our system don't have a strong preference for clothing choices beyond "it’s comfortable" and "it doesn't take a lot of effort to maintain," so some people just bounce off of whatever everyone else tends to wear.

So, we generally don’t have too much of an issue with clothing.

“👂what kinds of music do you like?”

Overall, our system likes a wide range of music. Of special note is many of us have a love of instrumental music, especially music that has symphonic metal influences. (So, lots of music that could be found searching Youtube for “epic music.”) Paradoxically a lot of us also enjoy LoFi beats and similar (mostly because its something soothing and helps us with our anxiety but also helps by giving us something to listen to without being distracting. Also, it’s kind of a very broad category, but we enjoy relistening to a lot of music from shows/movies/games we like (and also fan-created songs for shows/movies/games we like).

For some kinds of music specific to certain people in our system:

Ocean Watcher, Earth Listener, and Sky Singer are y fans of symphonic metal and power metal bands. (Ocean Watcher and Earth Listener especially like symphonic metal while Sky Singer leans more power metal.)  

Kardegray is a nu metal, heavy metal, and heavy rock fan.

Miushra and One-White-Sock are both country fans (the rest of us like it okay but it’s not our go-to kind of music.)

Sleep Theory - Paper Hearts / Post Profit - Self Defeater

We’re about a few weeks into the new year and not much has come out yet, so I’m just biding my time until a new album comes out that I’d like to really talk about, but I do have a couple of EPs that I’d like to talk about briefly. I feel very similarly about both of these EPs, but I’ll get to that in a second. These EPs are the debut EP from Sleep Theory, entitled Paper Hearts, and the new EP (and label debut) from Post Profit, entitled Self Defeater. Who are these bands exactly? I’m sure you’re wondering, as these two bands aren’t very popular… Yet. That’s the key word. They have the potential, but I feel similarly about both of these EPs in the sense that they have that potential, but these are both lacking a unique flavor, per se.

Okay, let’s break these down briefly, starting with Sleep Theory. Sleep Theory is a band from Memphis, of all places, that combines metalcore, alt-metal, nu-metal, and pop/R&B. If this sounds like something familiar, you’re not wrong. This is basically the Issues formula, and I mentioned this band in my tribute to that band from a few days ago, and how this band keeps that “R&Bcore” sound alive. These guys have a vocalist with a pop and R&B-sounding voice, and they use that to incorporate catchier and groovier textures that you would find in an Issues record. I saw a review of Paper Hearts that described this band as Linkin Park if they liked R&B, instead of hip-hop, and that makes a lot of sense. Instead of rapping and hip-hop beats, they use R&B sounds and vocals, but they also use metalcore, alt-metal, and nu-metal sounds.

Post Profit, on the other hand, is a hard-rock / alt-metal band from Longview, Texas, and they’re basically bringing back the 90s and 00s style of alt-metal, hard-rock, and post-grunge that was popular at the time, but they aren’t doing too much that separates them from the pack. At least other than have a modernized version of it, which is good, and they are a band that executes that sound well. They have a great vocalist as well, and their musicianship is very good and versatile. They have some heavier moments throughout their new EP, and their debut for Sharptone, Self Defeater, but they do have a debut album from 2022. Personally, it’s a good record, but I haven’t gone back to it much, because their debut is very rough around the edges in spots, and it feels way too long. This EP, however, has better and stronger songwriting, and it’s shorter, obviously. The debut just felt repetitive, versus being memorable, and hard hitting, despite a handful of songs having some cool moments in them. The EP shows more of that potential, however, but it still shows their limitations, as this EP is generic alt-metal with some heavier moments and solid hooks / vocal work. It’s just nothing you haven’t heard before.

That’s the best way to describe both of these EPs, as they’re both really good, but they’re lacking something that makes them stick out. Sleep Theory sounds a lot like Issues, which is cool, but what makes them different? They do have good hooks, and they sound like they’re primed to take over rock radio, but at the expense of sounding unique. Post Profit executes their brand of alt-metal quite well, but if you enjoy Alice In Chains, Deftones, and a lot of other bands in that vein, you’ll like this, too. The biggest takeaway I want from this piece is that these bands are good, and they have potential, but these are merely just humble beginnings that could propel the band to do more unique and interesting things. They’re worth listening to if you’re interested.

…Baby One More Time

Ah, the good ol' days when Britney Spears burst onto the scene like a pop supernova. I was a junior in high school, and Britney was all the rage. Music videos were still in their prime on MTV, and let's be real, we'd sit there like sponges, soaking in every pixelated dance move and sultry gaze.

Back then, we didn't have the luxury of hand-picking our entertainment; nope, we had to accept whatever the MTV overlords decided to force-feed us. And boy, did they feed us some goodies. Enter "…Baby One More Time," the anthem that made every girl in school decide whether or not they should be sporting plaid skirts and knee-high socks in their everyday lives.

Living through those heady late 90s/early aughts, it was about as easy to predict the musical landscape as it was to predict the weather. We'd just bid adieu to grunge, post-grunge was like a persistent party guest who wouldn't leave, alternative rock was busy being alternative, Matchbox 20 was doing their thing, and Puff Daddy was puffin' out some big tunes, no doubt. And as an added bonus, toss in a sprinkle of nu-metal for some added flavor.

It was like trying to predict which flavor of ice cream you'd be craving next. One moment, you're feeling all angsty in your flannel shirt, and the next, you're donning a shiny jumpsuit and wondering if you should join a boy band.

And, yes, "…Baby One More Time," the video that made you question why your high school didn't have a "singing and dancing during class" period. It was special and it had a magic touch that set it apart from the mundane. Like, can you even picture Willa Ford in your head right now?

A young girl, looking like she'd wandered off the set of a WB teen drama, daydreaming and bored in class. And then, lo and behold, she unleashes the power of pop stardom right there in the middle of algebra. Who needs quadratic equations when you can master a flawless choreography routine, right?

Back then, when it came to music videos, you could count the memorable ones on one hand. And this gem is one of them. It hit us like a world-ending meteor. Just thinking about it slaps me with vivid recollections of who I was and what I was doing at that precise moment in time.

Honestly, it's like the musical equivalent of a Proustian madeleine, but with way more dance moves and glitter. This video didn't just leave a mark; it left a dance floor-shaped dent in my memory.

Eb's music tastes are mostly within the realm of alt and nu metal, whatever the hell ICP's considered, and some pop music for flavoring. I definitely think hyperpop's a good fit for her, I should get on adding that to her playlist lmao.

Bank's tastes are fairly accurate. She likes funky music, I wouldn't necessarily say webcore, more in the lines of EDM and City Funk, and she's actually the one most into otacore! She also listens to indie music and bedroom pop, and some alt rock occasionally. Sad girl hours lmao

Boxxy most definitely listens to hard shit, but I think she's mostly into really hyper, really manic, really wack ass music, ESPECIALLY if that music is HARD on the bass. Intense bass is like ecstasy on her eardrums.

Yeah Allison listens to Studio Killers lmfao. She also would listen to stuff like hip hop and reggaetón, and on a completely different side, shit like horrorcore!

Leti is mostly into 90's alt rock and folk. She also frequently listens to classic Spanish tunes, but that's a thing her, Allison, and Ben share together.

Raina is a fucking punk and she listens to a lot of emo and punk classics. However, she's also really into hip hop and rap. As well as house music. And, being the gamer she is, she of course is massively into Video Game OSTs of all kinds. Also she's a piano player and loves classical pieces. She's a fucking paradox

Fumei's a hardcore rock and metal lover! In fact He, Ikute, and Shinda all are! Ikute is more of a bigger fan of Slipknot than Fumei is, but he still enjoys them. He's more into stuff like Metallica and Rob Zombie. And he also really likes classic rock, I'd say he's a bigger fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers than Ikute is lol. He also has a bit of flavoring in his tastes cause he's also really into ska and like, stoner surfer ass music, Sublime is def one of his fav groups.

I think Shinda does listen to Doja but I don't think she's much a listener of her genre. Like I said before, she's more about Rock and Metal. However, she's also really big on Video Game OSTs like Raina is. Mostly Sonic OSTs. She is a diehard Sonic fan lmao

I don't need to repeat it with Ikute, I already said the thing. Anyway, he also fucking loves EDM and dubstep. Dude makes that shit himself and he's pretty good at it tbh

Yume like indie stuff, she likes EDM but not as much as Ikute, and she likes J-pop and chiptune. Her taste is kind of similar to Bank so I won't repeat the same things, she's just into mostly sad/numbing music. She also loves certain game OSTs! She probably listens to the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack a lot.

Cool to the Core: Winter CD Sampler 2000/2001 2001 Nu-Metal / Industrial Rock / Electronic Rock

It’s kind of wild to me how mainstream turn-of-the-millennium rock has been almost completely memory holed. It’s not that we forget that bands like Korn or Limp Bizkit or Disturbed or Sevendust or Godsmack ever existed, it’s just that we tend to forget how immensely popular that these groups really were, and not many people seem to want to cop to the fact that they actually partook in its popularity. But tens of millions of people certainly did partake. Albums went multi-platinum, the bands headlined big festivals, they graced covers of magazines, and they got extensive airplay on MTV and radio. It’s hard to imagine that someone could ever earnestly utter the sentence, “Hoobastank is my favorite band of all time,” but a not insignificant amount of people actually really did feel that way at some point in their lives. 

And it’s understandable that people would be hesitant to admit that they liked the nu-metal and butt-rock bands of the late 90s and early 2000s. Looking back, it’s definitely up there as one of the absolute worst mainstream rock eras. But you know what else was an awful rock era? Hair metal. But we didn’t memory hole hair metal. It’s recognized and celebrated as a gigantic part of 80s culture and it’s never been swept under the rug despite how terrible we realized it was some years after its demise. But people still wax nostalgic about how fun and hedonistic and ridiculous it all was. The nu-metal/butt rock era hasn’t fared nearly as well in being acknowledged. It’s something that we try to suppress and no one seems all that willing to admit just how many spins they really gave to Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.

It’s okay. Really. Just let it go. Confront and acknowledge your past. It’s liberating. Trust me. Turn off your Private Session on Spotify and show the world that you’re willing to put “Control” by Puddle of Mudd on repeat. Relish the idea that “I love the way you smack my ass” was a thing that someone once repeatedly sang and that millions of people were more than willing to sing along to it.

This compilation was actually better than I expected. It’s not good, but a lot of the songs are infused with electronics, which makes them far more interesting than I could have ever hoped to imagine. I’ll just never be able to relate to all that loud anger and hostility that seemed to be the grand, unifying theme of this particular era of rock. I was never an angsty teenager myself, so the music ultimately wasn’t my thing, but I did like Linkin Park (who have managed to be an exception to the overall memory holing of nu-metal), and the LP song on this comp is a non-single track off of Hybrid Theory, which is an album I think I’ve listened to, partially, maybe once since, like, 2003, so it was nice to run into that song again.

For a wishlist thing. I love AUs so I’m willing to do a period au, wrestling au (don’t laugh at me), and lately I’ve been talking about a La Squadra tattoo shop au (i just feel like they’ll work well in such a setting). I also love modern day AUs (with stands or without). 

I’ll share a few headcanons for Koichi because I love him a lot. 

               Koichi has a stutter that he’s been going to speech therapy for years and has shown improvement, but sometimes when he’s spent time without speaking he will struggle with starting out his first sentence or when he’s under stress.                To supplement his own video game and CD collection he tutors smaller children with their homework and has been successful in this little side hustle.                His favorite flavor of ice cream is strawberry and in general any strawberry flavored things. Mom’s cooking is the best, and he looks forward to the curry she makes on Thursdays.               Koichi enjoys rap and r&b with the occasional nu metal track. He knows most of his English from this and what he is able to get on the internet.

in all seriousness tho, i’m just saying this current mindset is not what we started out with back in the day. it’s evolved, and that’s okay, but unlike with our hair we cant bleach our roots

i’ll give a history lesson the way me and my dear friend ash wednesday remember it. bear with me bc i’m bad at these things lol

emo was derivative of 90s punk and tripp goth (don’t get me started on the different types of goth lol just… you know what i mean by this phrase), but more angsty, albeit it was subversive because society as a whole was not as into the “discussing negative emotions” thing. emo is short for “emotions” in itself lol. (and i mean… nu metal music was angsty too tho lol.) it was less abrasive. more internalized. as ash put it, melancholic, more “cut my wrists and black my eyes”

scene was derivative of emo, but it was like the little sibling. it was somehow more bubbly, but at the same time more pissed the fuck off, and wanting to grow up too fast. it was heavily centered around the music scene, therefore the crowds that would go shows were referred to as “scene kids.” according to ash, the different flavor of scene typically was based on the music you listened to. the most common kind was hardcore, based on post hardcore music. then there was what a lot of people today are associating with it, the more vibrant kawaii kind. when icons like hello kitty and gloomy bear were claimed, things really got rolling. kawaii kind was the kind with the kandi, the nightcore, teh omgz l0l so RANDOM XD 

from there there things like retro scene, based on chiptune and retro gaming nostalgia, and crunk scene based on well. crunk. came about. lots of shutter shades in that one lol

no matter the flavor, scene was still at its core about being hardxcore. as ash said, more “my teen angst has a body count.” razor blades were a holdover from emo symbolism, once used to denote themes of self-harm, now used to promote violence and self defense. (”when you’re running your mouth our razorblades come out.”) guns were brought into the mix, part of crunk that became as mainstream as it could get for scene. (my myspace url was porcelainpistol, hence my current url.) brass knuckles became a HUGE thing, a “meet me in the (mosh) pit” deal

throughout all, alt subculture also held a heavy hand. body mods were also huge. (”is that a new tattoo? did that piercing fucking hurt?”) but there was also the persona of keeping others in their place, and at a distance. (”no jk jk jk lolololol… we’re not falling in love, we’re just falling apart”)

regarding innocence, uhh. while things like hello kitty and pikachu were considered childish, that was part of the point, it was to…. pervert something innocent, not reclaim it. hello kitty with a gun and i think that suffices ┐(◕◡◕)┌

promiscuity was a thing too. like… there was your soulmate, and once found you stayed with them. but if you were single? it was on in attempts to find that soulmate lol. ash reminded me there were things like “whore trains” on myspace, and people REVELED in being referred to that way. (the c word was also a big one)

also a lot of scene kids had my typing style. i literally just have not evolved past that point lol. i think it’s fun when people do the chat speak type thing regarding this subculture, but honestly you’re thinking of general web l33t speak and uh. homestuck. not myspace lol
