Remember the og version of Better than Revenge? and how when we would listen to it we would make the joke of ‘the feminism leaving my body’ ? Remember how the Taylor’s Version swapped out the lyrics to be more ‘feminist friendly’ but deep down despite being the ‘nicer’ version the original were the lyrics we would usually sing, and when we could go back to listen to the original songs Better than Revenge was one of the first people went to because whilst it wasn’t necessarily nice it was honest; a display of raw teenage girl anger?

If we start demanding that all art by women must meet some criteria (we can’t even agree on) under the guise of what is or isn’t empowering to women we start policing the way women are allowed to express themselves. We water down their feelings and in turn water down the intent, the experience, until it’s tucked nicely into a little check list box.

And to Sabrina Carpenter, whatever her intention for the album cover is; whether it’s to demonstrate how men view women or whether it’s simply just because she’s hot and horny, the value of her narrative is not worth less because it’s not packaged in a more ‘feminist acceptable’ way.

Women are allowed to be messy and contradicting, not because they’re women but because they’re people. We often demand more from them because we see their womanhood before we see their humanity, unlike men who are allowed the reversed treatment.

I don’t want only empowering art, I want something honest.

the lyric “you taught me a secret language i can't speak with anyone else” in illicit affairs is kind of crazy in the context of the manuscript because being in a relationship with an older man lead her to believe that she was so more mature than she actually was but when they broke up he kept saying that she was actually too young for him. the way she felt too young then after that with guys who were older than her and too mature for guys her own age… she must have felt so out of place.
