What a horrific fate.
If you presented as either of those, he pitied you. Truly.
Now, he wasn’t going to be with you the entire time. He had things to do, he was a busy man.
However, he would stop in occasionally to tease you, degrade you.
Viktor
Alpha.
Viktor often felt inferior to other alphas when he first presented. He wasn’t physically capable.
Then, as he grew so did his definition of words.
It never truly sunk in until the moment you called him a good alpha and he was.
He was a bit flippant with his own needs but for yours? He never faltered.
He was always aware of the slightest change in you, physically or mentally.
Not always aware of how to help, he was no stranger to asking you for what you needed in the moment from him.
His declining physical health didn’t allow him to go into ruts on a regular basis. He was lucky to get one a year.
That didn’t mean, he didn’t take off if you went into a heat or rut because he did. He would be right beside you for it, even if he couldn’t keep up with your stamina.
What he could do was make you breakfast and make sure you were staying properly hydrated.

Nearly half an hour later, Gaz leads you to a table along the dance floor. You've been collecting scraps of data every time he's waltzed you past Spinner's table, but without Arella on the hook, the op's about to be a bust. Suddenly, Gaz's eyes widen just a fraction, so quickly you could blink and miss it, but you don't blink, and you have a sneaking suspicion about what caused that reaction when you hear a pleasant voice behind you ask you for a dance. Gaz's reaction is the only warning you have to the fact that Spinner is standing there, hand out, wrist up, waiting for you.
You turn with a smile already on your lips and Price's voice in your ear, whispering, "Don't put yerself in danger, but see what ya can learn."
From the frown on his face, you know Gaz heard the Captain as well and isn't happy. You gently take Spinner's hand in yours and inhale the scent of linen and leather. It reminds you of secondhand bookshops, old tomes and leather binding with yellowed pages. It's a scent heavy that evokes a long history and rich legacy.
As is polite protocol, you flip your wrist and place it in his hand. He leans over and inhales deeply. You try to suffuse your scent with interest, slight enough to read as curiosity rather than desire. You lean to Gaz and brush a quick kiss near his ear, whispering, "Stay calm," before pulling back and more loudly announcing, "I'll be back in a moment."
Neither of you thought to play up a romance between you, which gave Spinner the opening to ask in the first place. A cheek kiss won't dissuade the man at this point, but it's a clear signal to him that you plan to return to your date. It's your only insurance to keep yourself safe.
Spinner gently takes your hand and pulls you onto the dance floor. His hold on you is tighter than Gaz's had been, and when you glance over, he's white-knuckling his glass. Trying to put your unease out of your mind, and clear it from your scent, you turn back to Spinner. On those outings around base, one of the most important things Price told you was to let your target share things of their own accord. Ask too many questions, and you'll look suspicious. But provide an opening, and you may get far more information.
So instead of saying anything, you let Spinner twirl you around while the music plays. Eventually he leans forward and takes another deep inhale. If you weren't sure of his secondary status before, this bold move screams alpha. But you bite your tongue and bide your time.
Spinner leans back and looks you in the eye. "I haven't been able to keep my mind my eyes off you. That dress and that collar make you hard to miss."
You thank him with a slight dip of your head and small, coy smile. He continues, "How have I never seen you at these kind of events, Miss..." He trails off leaving you space to introduce yourself. You give him your callsign, well versed at this point in how to turn it around into a cover. "Wren?" he asks, "like the bird?"
Another smile graces your lips, and you let your eyes briefly meet his. "Yes. My parents gave me the name hoping one day I'd grow wings, Mister..." You trail off as he had done. Though you know who he is, you want to see what information he'll give you voluntarily.
"Spinner, my dear. The name's Albert Spinner. But we don't need to be so formal, do we? You can call me Albert." He hand flexes around your waist, enough to let you know he's in charge and to call him by his name. There's no point in trying to resist as you want to keep him calm and talking.
You consciously work to school your accent into something acceptable in Spinner's circles. "Pleasure to meet you, Albert," you say. "You didn't recognize me because it's my first time at something so fancy. Do you attend these kind of functions often? I didn't even know about it until my friend," you tilt your head to the table where Gaz watches you both, "received tickets from his boss."
Spinner laughs, a deep rich sound that carries an undercurrent of condescension. "For some of us, these things happen far too frequently." You let him continue to spin you. "Why, I was at one in Kensington two months ago, and there's another gala slated for sometime next month in Waterloo."
"All charity auctions? For the same charity?" you ask, knowing, or at least guessing, the answer.
That laugh again. Grating. Though maybe only because you know something about this facade and the man underneath he seems desperate to hide. "Obviously not, Wren. Can't bleed a blue blood dry for the same cause over and over," he says. "But they're good opportunities to network. See who makes an appearance. Be seen." He leers at you at this last. "You must like being seen, Wren, dressed like that."
Your nerves spike, and you tamp down on the fear before it can send a slice of acid cutting through your scent. Spinner is a predator, and he's focused on you. You risk eye contact again and see his pupils dilate as he takes a slow, measured breath. "Don't be too scared, Wren. I don't see the point of putting birds in cages." His smile is sharp, all teeth. Your omega is clawing at the back of your brain, desperate to be away and safe. Dancing with him was a mistake.
Just as you're about to turn around and leave him, Price's voice cuts through your spiraling panic. "Ren, we've got ya. Gaz is thirty feet away, and me, Ghost, Soap 'ave eyes and ears on the whole ballroom." It gives you the reminder you need to recenter.
Spinner can't touch you with your team here. The song ends and though Spinner grabs for your hand, you smile, pour some exhaustion into your scent, and say, "Thank you, Mr. Spinner, Albert, for the dance. Maybe another time?" You slip through a few people before you chance a look back. There's a rigid set to Spinner's shoulders as he makes his way back to the table he'd been using, and you see disappointment on the face of the woman waiting there.
You don't know if you made an enemy or not, but you're sure Laswell and the others seriously underestimate Spinner.
Two more hours pass before Price calls it. Spinner and the woman who had been at his table left the main ballroom an hour after your dance. Arella still hasn't made an appearance. "Get back upstairs," Price calls over the comms. "We'll break down and debrief wi' Laswell before headin' back to base."
The whole evening has felt off. You're still not entirely comfortable or confident with these kids of ops, but what gets you most tonight is Spinner's comments. If you had a mating mark, would he have been so bold? It almost feels like the universe is reminding you of the protection a pack would provide.
Laswell's understandably disappointed that Arella didn't show, and while she grumbles about the sheer volume of data her analysts will have to sift through, you don't miss the nod of respect she directs at you. You share what Spinner said about the other event he attended and the one he implied he would be at soon. "I don't know if it's anything, but he seems like the kind of man who isn't going to come to something like this if there isn't a reason, something he can gain from it," you say. She tells you she'll have someone cross check the Kensington event timeline with suspicious activity.
As Price ends the call, you slip into the room next door and pull the dress off, sliding it neatly onto the hanger and pulling the garment bag over it. You treat the jewelry the same way, carefully placing it back in its boxes. Maybe it can be reused? You have nowhere to wear it, but the thought of it on someone else pains you.
The standard issue shirt and trousers irritate you more than normal, your skin having so quickly acclimated to the soft caress of the dress. Between the five of you, the room is stripped and packed and ready to move in less than thirty minutes. Everyone carries multiple cases down a hallway that seems miles long. The service elevator ride to the transport feels interminable. After everything is loaded into the boot, with your dress draped gently on top, you pile into the rear seat with Soap and Gaz.
They feel so much closer to you than they did on the drive into London, encroaching on your space. You squirm in your seat, trying to get comfortable between them. Your clothes scratch across your skin every time you move. You know your frustration is bleeding into your scent and try desperately to tamp it down, ignoring the looks Soap and Gaz throw in your direction. Make it back to base, just make it back to base you tell yourself. Then you can figure out what has you so turned around.
What seems like hours later, surveillance equipment is dropped off, the truck is back in base transport, and you're finally back in your barracks. The ballroom didn't seem too hot at the time, and being stuck between the two sergeants was uncomfortable but not cloying. But it must have been warmer than you realized because you're sweating. You strip off your top and trousers, quickly rearranging the blankets and things on your bed. As you toss your clothes in the hamper, your eyes flick to the calendar on the wall.
Your heart stops, and the blood drains from your face.
The uncomfortable clothes. How long things seem to take, moments stretching out like molasses. Being overly warm. Fixing your blankets.
Your heat is coming. Quickly. Before panic settles in, you scramble into your clothes again and head out the door to Price's office. You need a conversation with your Captain. Now.

all into his adulthood. things weren't handed to him but it always felt like he was blessed enough to be able to achieve his goals. he fought for what he wanted, and being a merman with an alluring voice certainly helped matters. he had full dedication in making his dreams come true. making his fortune of investing in other people's businesses and ventures. eventually he wound up in new haven, living his life there in partial retirement, focusing mostly on remote opportunities now.

Born the youngest of three sons, Prince grew up with a plethora of male role-models in his family, all of whom he - without a doubt, looked up to. He was close to both his brothers, but the one he felt closest to was definitely his oldest brother. Patrick. Ever since he could remember, Patrick was there for him while their sire rarely was - not the way Patrick looked out for him, so the connection between them was strong. Prince grew up wanting for nothing, especially because he presented Selkie early on, so his sire was pleased to know that if anything ever happened to his oldest son, the Ruthledges would still have another heir waiting in line. There was ..some pressure on him to perform well, in school and at home, but he knew that it was only for his own good, so he never quite found himself wanting to rebel. At least not in the way a typical teenager would. 
Prince looked up to his oldest brother - almost like one would to a parent, but it was a deeper bond than the one Prince had with his sire. Patrick was the man he strived to be. Hector often sang praise in Prince’s presence and - while he felt the very subtle sting of jealousy towards his brother, he mostly just was determined to be like him one day. 
When he presented Omega at the age of fifteen, he felt his world somewhat skyrocket into nirvana for a good few months. He’d never be the son their sire hoped to have found in him, he’d never be able to be like his brother. 
So Prince decided to be himself. 
Who is Prince Ruthledge? That'd be the million dollar question, but the young man was determined to find out.
Born again under the Mirror Moon, his personality could best be described as the definition of his moon. A happy, slightly reckless bundle of joy. All thanks to his oldest brother, no less. While Prince surely was a decent back-up heir, he knew that Patrick would be the one to take over sooner or later, so Prince pretty much got to enjoy life as it was. He went to school, he made friends, he hung out with his brothers, he crushed on an alpha and felt rejection for the first time in his life and he came out stronger. If one ignored what happened behind closed doors at House Ruthledge, his life was pretty normal - and he liked it this way. 
But he also knew the Ruthledges weren’t Selkies, they were sharks. He remembered the time his brother came home for the first time after he changed and Prince would never forget that first night after he returned. The brother that came home after that was … changed. There was a deep sadness to him that Prince could never quite find an explanation for, so he could only assume that it had to do something with the curse of the shark. Safe to say he was worried for the day when it was his turn. He liked himself the way he was, but he also didn’t want to disappoint their father, or let him think Prince was weak. He might be the youngest, with quite a big age difference to his older brothers, so he’d always somewhat been coddled, but he could also look after himself and protect himself. Thanks to Patrick. Even now, with a future mate and work keeping him busy, Patrick never never forgot him.
He has no interest in taking over the family, or its businesses - nor did he want their father to tell him who his mate would be. He wanted to fall in love, find the love of his life in a supermarket or something like that. While nobody could deny Patrick and his promised mate Nathan seemed to be the perfect match, Prince just … wanted to experience true love. And love, relationships and the like were only some of the things he wanted to experience himself. The first step after graduation had been to move to Campus. It was .. somewhat unnecessary, because New Haven really wasn’t big and he could’ve just kept living in the family house, but Prince wanted to know what it was like to live away from home - with nobody to coddle him and nobody to go easy on him when he struggled. 
Not that he'd ever not invite himself into his brother's home for dinner, or demand attention while he was at work - or invite him and his betrothed over to the Ruthledge house for dinner... no, that wouldn't change.
But college would grant him self-reliability among other things. Education was part of the Ruthledge ideology, so his father agreed without much protest and Prince moved into one of the dorms - like any other student on the planet. 
What he wants to do with his life? He's got no clue, but he'll find out eventually.

APPEARANCE
he stands at 5'11" (1.8 m) with a fair complexion that's tanned well after years of going to the beach. Ares is more the type who'd be called "beautiful" instead of handsome, as he's not as muscular as those he serves with. Still, he has his share of muscle, bruises, and scars--souvenirs from everything he's survived. His hair is a heady bronze in the sunlight, since it's light brown with reddish undertones, and his eyes are an ever-changing mix of green.
PERSONALITY
Many view him as prideful, but he simply lacks the insecurities that others believe to be important to a normal sense of self. In other words, he doesn’t care much about what others of him, because they are not his family/loved ones. He’d rather have a tight circle of close friends than the approval of everyone. He also views all people as equal, so if he overhears a bully antagonizing someone, he'll jump in to end things. Sometimes he's so eager to "end things" that he ends up doing something rash and violent. This, as well as his deeply-ingrained loyalty, can easily be seen as weaknesses of his.

BACKGROUND
His favorite childhood memory is of his dad chasing him into the waves as a toddler while his mom laughed & watched. His parents, famous war hero Petros, and even-more-famous Thekla, divorced when he was six. About a decade later, both parents were checking on their son when it was convenient, but...well. He'd end up having a kid when he was in secondary school, after sleeping with a female friend while drunk and naked. It was definitely an accident, and yet he didn't mind children. He and his friend decided to keep things nice and platonic there, and he promised to send them money every day before he came to visit. Not long after that, Ares, like most others his age, joined the army to finish their mandatory service. He ended up serving past his term.
EXTRA
In the US, away from his traditional dad, he starts dressing in a more genderfluid way, wearing low-collared shirts and mesh tops, getting his ears pierced, putting on eyeliner and light makeup...etc. He still identifies as a boy, but he comes out as pansexual (& to his close friends, polyamorous). He keeps plenty of pictures of his current lover(s) on his phone because he tends to get a lil lonely while traveling, even when he's with the entourage he's used to. Even though he has no hard feelings towards his time in the military (despite his PTSD), he's kind of insecure when it comes to letting people outside his inner circle see the healed gunshot wounds on his torso. He has a Spotify account for releasing music (AKA original acoustics he records while on leave), under the name AGAP3.

“Be honest, is this outfit showing off too much cleavage for a date with a hanar?”
Tacilus stares back blankly at you as she takes a sip of her kava.
“Am I not showing enough cleave?” You desperately adjust your shirt collar, tugging it this way and that.
“I don’t think a hanar cares one way or another about secondary sex characteristics its species doesn’t have.”
“You say that but I know I caught you looking down our asari waitresses shirt the other day and turians don’t have tits either.”
Tacilus takes another sip of her kava in lieu of a response.
Right on cue, your omni-tool chirps with a message from Lysandell announcing their arrival outside your apartment complex. You hope they aren’t too offended by cleavage because you tug your collar down to show some off before grabbing your keys to head out and meet them.
“Bye Tacilus, don’t stay up too late reading books and doing crossword puzzles like a hermit!”
“Try not to end up in a weird xeno fetish porn video on the dark web!” she calls back to you just before the door slams behind you.
Lysandell is there to greet you as soon as you exit the building. They wave a tentacle to you as they approach, emitting subtle flashes of pink and purple light and probably some more vibrant colors that can’t be seen by the human eye.
They’ve dressed up for the occasion; a single bright red bow tie fixed beneath the closest equivalent a hanar has for a chin. You’re impressed. You hope that Lysandell is equally impressed by your display of cleavage.
“This one is impressed by the human’s display of cleavage,” they say, immediately alleviating your fears. They offer a tentacle to you which you take daintily before it wraps around your arm three times over. “Please allow this one to show the bewitchingly beautiful human a lovely night.”
As far as first dates go, a trip to the aquarium is a pretty good one. You never thought much about fish other than how good they taste but Lysandell seems well-versed in marine life of all kinds, whether it be the fish that inhabit the tropical waters of Sur’Kesh or the life found in the deepest depths of Thessia’s eezo-infused oceans. They know more about Earth’s marine life than you do; though that’s not saying much since you’ve never even set foot on your home world; and you listen with rapt attention and wide eyes as they lead you to the dimmed room of the jellyfish exhibit, the only lights coming from the bioluminescent forms gracefully drifting in the tanks that surround you.
You feel a tentative tentacle place itself along your waist and you find yourself leaning into the touch. You think you feel butterflies in your stomach. Maybe it’s just the romantic lighting or maybe it’s gas but you’re beginning to think that maybe, just maybe, this might be the one.
Then Lysandell gestures a tentacle to a cluster of jellyfish in front of you, casually asks, “Does the human have any intentions of raising a family?” and you manage to do a spit take despite not having anything to drink since this morning’s coffee over three hours ago.

ok this took way longer than i expected because i got sidetracked looking at paintings and reading poetry and just admiring the mv, but it's finally finished!! let's talk about
higher
i'm going to draw your attention to a few things.
firstly, these verses from rime of the ancient mariner by samuel taylor coleridge, published 1834:
The harbour-bay was clear as glass,
So smoothly it was strewn!
And on the bay the moonlight lay,
And the shadow of the Moon.
The rock shone bright, the kirk no less,
That stands above the rock:
The moonlight steeped in silentness
The steady weathercock.
And the bay was white with silent light,
Till rising from the same,
Full many shapes, that shadows were,
In crimson colours came.
A little distance from the prow
Those crimson shadows were:
I turned my eyes upon the deck—

there's a common conflation between the romantic and the pastoral in the general cultural consensus because the pastoral a) has been around as an art term longer than romantic, and b) romanticism does use some similar imagery. but there is a key difference: the pastoral is specfically an idealization of 'the simple shepherding life,' often for high class and urban audiences who have no conception of the details of this life includes. one of the more famous examples is christopher marlowe's a passionate shepherd to his love, published in 1599:
Come live with me and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove,
That Valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods, or steepy mountain yields.
And we will sit upon the Rocks,
Seeing the Shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow Rivers to whose falls
Melodious birds sing Madrigals.
And I will make thee beds of Roses
And a thousand fragrant posies,
A cap of flowers, and a kirtle
Embroidered all with leaves of Myrtle;

whereas romanticism is a more pointedly specific movement that was active from around 1800 to 1850, primarily focused on intense emotion and catharsis as the primary experiential output of an artwork. which most prominently manifested in a deep fascination and glorification of the natural environment and historical nostalgia. the movement sprung from the german sturm und drang (literally storm and drive/stress) period of the late 1760s to early 1780s, which was a direct reaction to rationalism and enlightenment. romanticism had similar impulses; it was also a revival of medievalism and a reaction against the looming urban sprawl and mechanization of the industrial revolution. a typical romantic poem from one of the originators of the english movment william wordsworth, composed upon westminster bridge, september 3, 1802, originally published 1807:
Earth has not any thing to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.

this romantic fascination with nature was underpinned by the philosophy of the sublime, generally agreed to be first treatised by edmund burke in 1756, the theory was also written about by kant and hegel. in the simplest of terms, the sublime is a quality of greatness beyond calculation, imitation, and human comprehension. the sublime is twofold; the greatness of the ocean is beautiful, but its power is also terrifying, and the experience of the sublime is to feel those two at once. to be in awe and also to be horrified of its ability to sink ships and drown a life in a tempermental change of tide.
let's take a quick detour to talk about
clothing
in the present day we have become much more lax thanks to the aesthetic movement in the late nineteenth century, but back in the early victorian period there are still highly structured rules about when and what clothing one can wear in public. and the clothing itself is also highly structured. anyone with a passing understanding of the victorian era knows about the whole flashing of the ankle thing and corsets galore, and it is true that the general day to day garments cover a lot of area. for men in particular, this manifests in no less than three layers in public at all times: shirt, waistcoat, and suit jacket, with a coat or mantle overtop in colder temperatures. this also includes a variation of a neck tie (depending on what year), hat, gloves, and any other decided upon accessories (this can also include a corset and other padded structural underpinnings). an important tangent to mention here is that this is the uniform of the upper classes, although the rules do apply to the lower classes if they wanted to appear 'sophisticated.' the working man's uniform was also shirt, waistcoat, trousers, but the difference here is in the textiles themselves; the colours tended to be much more drab, with less complicated patterns. obviously due to the price fabric itself, but also due to the labour of laundry. an indicator of class here is the white shirt itself and its pristine implications. (there is a longer conversation here about the invention of neckties and detachable collars and cuffs, but that's for another day). the silhouettes are very important to note here in the higher mv, as they are directly referential to the 'romantic poet' archetype of loose shirt and tight pants that we see in popular culture. but as i've just said, the reality is that men of the era were not dressed like this out in public. this look is essentially underwear; the implications are salacious. so where did this come from? well, we can blame it mostly on lord byron, who by all accounts was the first western 'rockstar.' notoriously called 'mad, bad and dangerous to know' by lady caroline lamb (a married women he publically had an affair with), byron was openly bisexual and deeply hedonistic with a lot of questionable habits, but his poetry was so popular that he was known to have women following him in the street and gathering in large quanities to see him at salons. and this was close to three decades before lizstomania. his close friends and contemporaries included percy and mary shelley, with whom he lived with abroad in italy for some time (this living arrangement resulted in the writing of both frankenstein and john polidori's the vampyre). byron's reputation was so eclipsing that the image of the lush poet lazing in his undergarments has become its own genre of romantic, slightly removed from the movement byron was writing in. it's also worth it to point out that there are no official portraits of byron dressed like this from the time. the visual assumption is somewhat apochryphal. now let's get into some specifics. a.c.e is not unfamiliar to this silhouette; as previously mentioned in this post i wrote about their styling, the boxy loose upper and fitted lower is their general mode for their styling because of its emphasis on legs. cactus was the most extreme example of this, and to prove my point, this specific silhouette is extremely common in classical ballet:

higher fits very neatly into this same category: we have an emphasis on the legs through tightly fitted garments and also through light reflective textile, as well as a secondary emphasis on arm and shoulder movements with looser fit shirts. plus, the shirts are made from fabrics that have good drape and flow, and mimic the visual effects of water:

there are also several instances of scale patterning and wetlook hair styles, further elabourating on the siren theme. and the jewelry is the same, purposefully cut clear stones for oceanic sparkle or pearls, the gem directly born from water, as highlighting accents to specific parts of the body - namely eyes, hands, and torso:

the body jewelry also serves a double purpose in addition to being sparkly; it gives a semblance of shape to their torsos so their movements aren't totally lost in the shroud of their shirts, and it also invokes some of that salacious element that us as a modern audience doesn't necessarily perceive in the same way when we see a man wearing only a shirt. all of these points are especially prominent in the stage costuming. concerning the veils, these are an aesthetic choice following the theme of depicting water without actually using water. the song has a very breathless quality to it, and the lyrics directly make reference to water and breathlessness, so it only makes sense to have a physical manifestation of struggling to breathe.

now let's talk about
mise-en-scène
unlike most kpop mvs, I would argue that higher is not a spectacle in what we normally see spectacle to be. the overwhelming visual saturation of goblin (and the goblin remix) is more in line with what we expect, but how do you follow that, top it? the answer is that you don't. you aim for something with a completely different feel, which is exact what they did with higher.
the performing arts did not escape romanticism. the very start of the movement, sturm und drang, is actually named from a specific play written by friedrich maximilian klinger that premiered in 1777. the plays of the brief period are characterized by extreme and passionate emotions, and were siblings to one of the most famous genres of theatre, the melodrama. meant to appeal directly to the emotions of the audience using sensationalist plots and stock characters, the melodrama was the predominent form of entertainment in victorian england and gradually developed a specific form of its own. in this period we also start to see the development of 'stagecraft' into the recognizable form that it takes today. footlights, limelight/spotlighting, the separation of house and stage lighting, fly galleries, elevator platform mechanics, and the first (purported) western use of rear projection are all innovations of the late 18th and 19th centuries, as melodramas were known to have very intricate and spectacular stagings. and to go along with these stagecraft mechanics we see the rise in designated stage crews, which were predominantly off-duty sailors looking to make money. the rope systems that made up the fly galleries were very similar to that on ships, and much of the terminology and supersitions crossed over: this is the origin of the term 'rigging' being used for suspending set elements, and also the origin of the 'don't whistle in a theatre' superstition. as sailors communicated with whistle patterns on ships, the same system was adopted for changing scenery, and therefore whistling a random pattern could potentially drop a setpiece on an unsuspecting victim.
so with all this backstory out of the way, what is the very first full location we see? a stage, complete with forced perspective via the painted fabric legs (the side panels) and borders (the wavy upper panels). we even have a flat painted backdrop with a projection screen and hanging overhead lamps. there's also a second interior set, a desk in what looks to be a study of some kind. bit self explanatory on this one, taking the poet notion on the nose.

the locations have a bit of an obtuse arc, but it's there when you look for it. it starts interior spaces, where the ideas of sublime attempted to be recreated for the viewer. then it moves to transitory spaces; portions of nature isolated from a whole environment, interjections of human architecture into natural spaces:
(the white hut structure in the greenhouse is reminiscent of a skene (literally hut/tent), which is the structure at the back of the stage in ancient greek theatre used for the actors to change their masks and costumes. it was originally temporary, but slowly transformed into permanent stage architecture)

lastly,
lighting
there's a very clear lighting pattern here, primarily in light and dark. the base colour story is fairly simple complementary pairs; there's a lot of purple/red and green, and blue and yellow/amber, with everything relatively on the same tonal level. there are deliberate interjections of heavily saturated red for specific effect. there are also, most notably, a 'dark' version of all the sets. obviously as a reference to the eclipse that we see in the mv and in the concept photo series, but also as a reference to that darker undercurrent of the sublime, the upsetting, the uncanny, and the terrifying:

FIC ROUND-UP 2020
Hey, ya'll, as we yell one last ‘FUCK YOU’ at the absolute hell year that was 2020, I thought I would do a fic round-up of everything I wrote this year. Enjoy!
down to the last bone (pre-relationship McEichel, shapeshifter au): Jack doesn't really meet McDavid until they're both playing at the U18's in Finland. He's heard of him, of course, everyone has, and they've run into each other on-ice, but nothing more than that.
on a hot summer’s night (Tkachuks, a/b/o au, mpreg, werewolves, sibling incest): Sometimes he’ll just be making a sandwich or watching a movie and he’ll just get hit with this urge to find Brady and beg him to fuck him, to make sure he knocks him up.
It’s fucked up for a lot of reasons, not least that they're both still at the beginning of their careers, especially Brady, and Matt isn't in a hurry to stop playing for an extended amount of time, weird biological urges aside.
So when it's mid-August and he still hasn't had his late summer heat, Matt's worried and pissed and fucking scared, but still a small part of him hopes that his alpha finally knocked him up.
falling apart (hips and hearts) (McEichel, a/b/o au, heat/rut sex):  The first time they have sex is during the run-up to the draft while they're in Chicago to watch game four of the Final.
strike us like a match (Tkachuks, Sentinel/Guides, bonding, sibling incest): They've always been close, closer than most siblings Matt knows.
sweat drips (love sticks) (Tkachuks, BDSM au, sibling incest, impact play): There's worse things for a hockey player who happens to also be a sub to be than a masochist; at the very least Matt always has a bruise to press when he's jerking off, aches and pains that he can pretend someone put on his skin during a scene if he wants to. Usually he doesn't.
just swimming in our sins (Tkachuks, dick pics, sibling incest, panty kink, rough sex): The thing is they've always been weird about each other.
Matt always thought it was just being brothers, just a product of playing hockey their whole lives and moving around a lot when they were growing up.
But now he's pretty sure that whatever weirdness they have between them has nothing to do with hockey.
feel good (on my lips) (Stromes, a/b/o au, sibling incest, not related au, heat sex): Most of the time it doesn't bother Ryan that his dad forgets he's an alpha; the rest of their family are almost all betas, so Ryan's always just shrugged off being lost in the shuffle.
It mostly doesn't matter to him in the grand scheme of things: he doesn't live at home any more, his ruts are always six months apart so it's easy for him to plan visits home around them. There's never any one that stays at his dad's house, so his old room there still smells like him, there's no other scents there to annoy him when he visits.
It does mean that his dad tends to dismiss other people's dynamics as unimportant, because Ryan is so easy going about his own.
Even when that's information Ryan would really appreciate having ahead of time.
those words, that kiss (Patrik Laine/Nik Ehlers, werewolves, a/b/o au, heat sex): As long as Nik’s happy, that’s all that matters to Patrik. Everything else is secondary to that, even hockey.
take me home (you’re the one true thing) (Tkachuks, soulmate au, sibling incest): They're exactly what they're meant to be, every part of them tangled together, and they wouldn't change any of it no matter what.
eyes closed, fingers crossed (Sam Girard/Erik Johnson, BDSM au, spanking, light punishment): Erik doesn't need to see a video to know that Sam's a good dom.
all your fevered dreams (Tkachuks, hellhounds, sirens, mating fights, sibling incest): Most preternaturals don’t recognize Matt’s scent right away.
The ocean part of it is simple: all sirens smell like saltwater, even if they’re not born at sea the way their ancestors were. It’s the brimstone that makes wolves and other shifters wrinkle their noses in confusion and lean in closer to get a stronger smell, like their noses lied to them the first time.
Matt tolerates it when it’s his teammates trying to familiarize themselves with his scent and even then his patience is limited and he’s not afraid to push them away from him if they get too annoying about it.
Hellhounds are choosy about who they let into their personal space and for how long: Matt’s no exception.
not a day goes by (Brock Boeser/Elias Pettersson, a/b/o au, non-traditional a/b/o dynamics, bonding): He's never looked at an alpha and thought mine. Never wondered how one would look with his collar around their neck.
But Brock is always right there, always within touching distance and smiling at Elias like he can't help himself. Like maybe he wants what Elias wants.
in between (McEichel, godlings au, homophobic slurs): The locker room afterwards is quiet in spite of winning and Connor knows part of it is his own bad mood bleeding over to the rest of the team, but he can't bring himself to care as much as he should.
got you under my skin (Quinn Hughes/Jack Hughes, a/b/o au, sibling incest): “Quinn's not an alpha,” Jack says automatically, even though he can smell the new undertone to Quinn's normal evergreen and oranges scent, the one that's been there since they went to world juniors last year; it’s sharp and heady, and a part of Jack can’t help but focus on it, drawn to it for some reason he can’t explain. “We're betas,” he adds, his voice unsure.
Matty scoffs but doesn’t say anything, and he doesn’t really need to: Quinn and Chucky are still fighting, snarling and hitting each other with a ferociousness that seems entirely out of place in the Tkachuk's front yard, and the air seems to be pressing down on Jack, intense with the scent of two enraged alphas, and that says more than any words could.
charlie (Charlie McAvoy/Brandon Carlo, godlings verse): Charlie doesn't remember anyone ever explaining what death, or the afterlife was to him.
beginnings in death (pre-relationship McEichel, in death au): The first time he sees Connor is at a funeral.
nobody loves you (like i do) (Tkachuks, BDSM au, masochism, sadism, rough sex): The thing is Matt doesn’t consider himself romantic or anything like that. He loves Brady: as his dom, as his brother, as his boyfriend, and yeah, he needs him in the same ways, but those are just facts to him.
i love the way you hurt me (Tkachuks, werewolves, animal death, werewolf courting, minor character death): A mate who couldn’t court properly, who didn’t have claws and teeth of their own, wasn’t a mate worth having in Matt’s opinion.
How could you judge someone as worthy when they couldn’t even beat you in a fight?
just like oxygen (McEichel, werewolves, animal death, werewolf courting, minor character death): Even back then Jack knew Connor would change his life.
just to feel you (Tkachuks, a/b/o au, heat sex): Brady knows it’s going to be him and Matt.
They still fight like cats and dogs, as eager to use their fists on each other now as when they were kids, but there's an edge to it recently that wasn't there before, something that makes Brady want to pin Matt to the floor and take him apart, bite by bite.
He thinks Matt would let him, too, the way he watches Brady when he thinks Brady isn't paying attention.
The joke's on him, Brady always pays attention to Matt and what he's doing.

Since you asked me something similar for enneagrams, how would you order the four primaries and secondaries from most to least interesting for you to write/read about
I think I should start with a disclaimer that when it comes to reading about a character, a good writer could make me love them even if they wouldn't look like my type and viceversa. And also a second disclaimer that I can easily change my mind and on another day, this answer might have looked different. So, here is how I would order them right now, keeping in mind what I like to write:
Primaries
1. Snake - I don't think it should come as a surprise to anyone. It's my primary, I am very comfortable with it and I understand Snakes in a way I'll probably never will the others. So ofc I find it easy and enjoyable to write Snake characters: Juliet, Rafael, Elettra, Pandora-now-renamed-Mira. They are the main OCs who I can think of right now -I also have OCs from currently abandoned projects that I have yet to sort but I am sure I will find Snakes there too- and I get such a kick out of writing their plots especially since they are so very different from the other: Juliet is slightly immature in some ways, Pandora/Mira has just unburned, Elettra is trying not to burn herself and Rafael is wearing so many models his Snake is almost a dirty secret for him.
2. Bird - I debated between Bird and Lion, but my own Bird model won. Plus I find Intuitive primaries hard to write sns while I find the systems Birds build very interesting and easy to understand. Only two of my OCs - Elodie and Christine- are Bird primaries but I find both their POVs flow the easiest in their respective WIPs. Also, the number of OCs that model this primary is also telling: Nefele (probably the only reason why she's not a mess LOL), Elettra (when I will get to write her in book 2) and probably Rafael bc this guy models everything.
3. Lion - I like Lions, I truly do, but sometimes I can't quite click with them enough. It's especially telling when writing because two of mine are burned - Laura, Nefele- while the third -Angelina- doesn't get that much POV (yet?). Buut I love the intensity this primary brings to a narrative and how Lion models can shape a character and others' perception of them: Rafael and Pandora/Mira both have/had healthy and not-so-healthy Lion models that made people misjudge them.
4. Badger - I think the fact that none of my main OCs are Badgers justifies their place here. Tho, looking back to some old notes, I think an older OC I really loved might be a Double Badger so there is hope yet. Anyway, I think that the problem for me is that I get this primary in a way because we are both Loyalists. But Badgers' approach to people vs Snakes' is mind-boggling to me. The whole "caring about everyone until they give you a reason not to" is...not a POV I could write and not be exhausted even if I admire the hell out of people who think like this.
Secondaries
1. Snake - Yeah, I am actually surprised about this one, but the numbers don't lie: Elettra, Elodie, Laura, Juliet are all Snake secondaries. Laura and Juliet may be my favourites because they are trouble-making Snakes that love wrecking havoc. Elodie and Elettra are more of a chameleon variety that uses their secondary to blend in and 'strike' when you least expect them. Also Pandora/Mira has a very good Snake secondary model that she really loves. So yeah, I have a blast writing these guys xD
2. Lion - I think it's a bit more therapeutic for me, a burned Lion, to read than write about this secondary, but nonetheless I still love writing it: Pandora/Mira, Rafael and Angelina are all Lions and unsurprisingly the first two have a lot of narrative weight in their verses. Just like with the Snake primary, this is easy for me to understand but sometimes hard to write bc of my burning. Hence it being #2.
3. Bird - It's the one secondary I can't model, so I admire the hell out of genuine Bird secondaries. Probably why Nefele ended up as one LOL. And why she's probably the only OC I have who is a genuine Bird secondary -Rafael models it masterfully and so do Pandora/Mira and Juliet but not very well. What can I say, there is something very magnetic about characters whose MO I could never use.
4. Badger - Um, I think my own model may be at fault here, because despite its usefulness it can feel like a collar sometimes and fiction is a way to escape it. Poor Christine is my only Badger secondary and as I said I find her very easy to write about, but it's not enough. I may get Badgers' MO - I admire it- but I am also not interested in exploring it in fiction.
