I agree what you said about the crow fans being annoying lol. I'm a big fan of the crow 1994 and Brandon Lee, but I dunno what it is with wanting to be so obnoxious and elitist like the people who yap "my music taste is the best" because they listen to something old or indie and not well known. I don't believe the new crow will hit the same as the og, it will hit different and that is fine too, not to mention there's talks from the test screening that the movie is actually good so people need to get out their ass and just not watch the movie if they're so offended. Also bills look is great for what the movie is aiming for. I first thought "wow he looks like a mess and a crackhead and hot". This version of Eric is in rehab, I think he's meant to give off that vibe

Yeah there is a bit of elitism ( classism ) and gatekeeping behind the critics. There are two things people need to understand. This is not exactly a reboot because it's a completely different timeline/ universe where they took names and details from the comics to build a different story. Here Eric Is a flawed hero, an ex drug addict . Why is that a problem? Is a very common trope.

The crow is one of my favorite movies and I understand why people are so fond of it and saw it as some type of sacred relic that should not be touched. And they feel offended by the fact that the new movie doesn't seem to "honour" Brando Lee legacy ,they were hoping for a movie that revolved around him and that also served as some time of comfort place to relieve in real time what they felt in their younger days ... Like a nostalgia pill.

For me the fact that this version is so different is a good way to pay respect to the 90's movie. That was Brandon Lee's Crow. And as such will remain. You can always go back to it

Times change , it's been 30 years, a new generation needs a new hero, someone they can reflect onto and share emotions with ... This is for the young flawed kids / young adults who feel lost and in pain. Let them have this and at the same time enjoy a new beginning for a new story that will also mutate every other generation. Nothing stays completely untouched over time , it's not natural.

Keep an open mind , step down your moral high , they all looked like crazy conservative with the " omg tattoos, he does drugs ? , he is openly goth ? " "Kids know nothing " grrrr

the more i think about it, this season was honestly disappointing for me. i enjoyed watching it, and there definitely was some stuff that i did like, but overall as a fan of the books i feel kind of betrayed. i'm okay with canon non-compliance when you stay true to the characters and the feeling of the original story, but some of the things this adaptation did really rubbed me the wrong way. it felt like they were doing the absolute most for the crows to have as much screen time as possible because they know they're the fan favorites, but in turn messed with their individual arcs and just the way they were characterized a lot. i'd almost rather have had them be in the show less and kept an air of mystery (especially within the context of a possible six of crows spinoff adaptation.) there was absolutely no need to use important quotes and scenes from soc/ck this early, and as a book fan it felt glaringly out of place.

inej's character was just botched overall, not in characterization (amita did a great job) but in the acknowledgment of her trauma and her past. having nina remove her menagerie tattoo pissed me off so much, because having it be scarred and unclean is so symbolic of her trauma in the books. i also felt like they just ignored the fact that she has trauma overall, and it was never hinted at, in the scenes with kaz or ever. this is part of why her leaving ketterdam to hunt slavers holds so much weight in the books (especially with the epiphany scene she has climbing the incinerator shaft in soc) but in this scenario it felt very weakened. and don't give me any of that "saving it for later" bullshit, her trauma is not a plot point to bring up in a future season. also tante heleen dying so early and so unceremoniously didn't sit right with me, considering she's sort of meant to mirror pekka rollins for inej in a way, and the strive for revenge is so important to both of them. like FUCKKKK HER but it felt a little soon

kaz on the other hand i actually thought was fairly well done. freddy carter gave the performance of a fucking lifetime go king go (tbh all of the acting in this show was phenomenal, sucks that the writing was so shitty!! anyways.) the acknowledgment of his trauma and his haehephobia was continuous and shown really well in a lot of scenes. i saw someone say it felt like it was focused more on his survivors guilt (which is the lesser part in the books) than his haehephobia, which i wouldn't disagree with but it wasn't a glaring issue for me. the scene with the poison hallucinations, the one in the streets of shu han where inej had to comfort him, and even at the end with the "i will have you without armor" scene were all very well done. the dregs fight was way too soon and not as climactic as it needed to be but i don’t want to talk about that (im fragile)

wylan's characterization was...it was there?? it felt a little off but i can't fully articulate why?? they did a good job with showing his talent and just like value as a demolition man, with the scene where he rescued everyone in shu han and in the end with the bomb saving nikolai and the others. i'm going to use this as an opportunity to talk about wesper because they speedran them so fucking much, and i was lowkey here for it?? they weren't *my* wesper but they were entertaining?? it makes sense to have them get together in the context of the whole show, as a side plot romance to keep it engaging. they also have the least incentive to not be together i guess? like everybody else is going the fuck through it and they have their issues but i guess they have like, less stopping them? i don't love the idea that they hooked up beforehand but i can accept it tbh.

outside of wesper, jesper's characterization was pretty good, i love kit young as him sooo much omg. it might have just been me but i felt like his sarcasm and like little quips with the crows and stuff wasn't as good as it was in s1?? the hallucination scene with his mother made me cry a little even though i feel like his development with being grisha was definitely too early and rushed (as is the theme with this season apparently!) also the way his relationship with wylan happened and their interactions were fairly in character for jesper imo.

nina, no offense, where was her personality?? nina in the books is so out of pocket and iconic and i felt like we got almost none of that. they made her entire character center around matthias which was so inaccurate to who she is. like yes matthias is important to her in the books but it never felt like the sole part of her personality. we deserved more nina and inej interactions bc i love them a lot.

i honestly liked what they did with matthias even though the perks rollins crossover was kind of ???ok anyways. bro was going the fuck through it but every scene with him felt a little redundant like, we got the point. i honestly thought they were going to get him out of hellgate and i was prepared to be salty about it but i was pleasantly surprised that they kept at least one thing book accurate and in line with the set up for six of crows.

as for the plot, honestly the crows being so involved in the ending was a fanfiction crossover fever dream. i don’t even want to talk about it. i don’t have too much to say on the shadow and bone plot because i honestly don’t know those books as well and haven’t read them in over two years. overall i feel like part of the reason i’m so critical is because i know six of crows by heart and those characters are so untouchable to me, it hurts a little to see them. i’m ok with changes to s&b plot because we all know those books are not that good, but six of crows?? if it’s not broken don’t fix it guys. i loved tamar and tolya, genya was great, lowkey i loved malina even thought i like their book ending better (that might be an unpopular opinions idk.) nikolai was kind of meh, he could have been a lottttt more interesting and his personality was lacking. every scene with the darkling in it was boring. maybe that’s why they included the crows so much. did i mention i love genya??? i’ve heard people say zoya was out of character but i don’t even know what in character would be for her so i can’t comment on that. i loved the keftas and the costuming overall, i still don’t like how alina’s summoning looks (i feel like it should be more warm??), we were robbed of i am become a blade

honestly, if they do adapt six of crows i want them to start over from the beginning, ignore the show but use the show cast. but that is not going to happen and they already used so much of the dialogue and scenes from ck . so .

I'm in love with Jessie as Alina. Racist cartographers *gag* but an important part of the narrative and i recognise that Ana Kuya telling a child the fold ate your parents is harsh but I still kind of love her. Jessie's smile... My heart has been obliterated. Oy, again with the racism. Keramzin is beautiful. Mal exuding dumbass energy as he screams NO whilst hiding. Have I mentioned I love ana kuya? Okay I got booted off the living room tv cuz my mom got up and wanted to watch the news but... EPISODE 2

I think they’re suggesting here that Jesper knows about Kaz’s history with Pekka??? It’s subtle just a few lines... I don’t know how I feel about this that would make them so much closer which, of course, I love but it’s meant to be Kaz’s deep-dark-I’m-not-gonna-tell-anyone-about-this-till-the-day-I-die secret. And minutes before Inej and Jes were talking and she comments that she thinks Kaz wants revenge, that he hates Pekka Rollins for more than just his... business tactics, and Jesper is just like “yeah cuz he’s paid off the stadwatch so he can do whatever he wants” but what if he was just playing dumb???

Also before this Pekka Rollins fully burst into the Crow Club and lowkey beat Kaz up (fairly handily too, I might add, I think Kaz would have put up more of a fight and maybe he,,, like intended to look weak so he’d be underestimated but it had just been a couple of Pekka’s thugs who got him solidly restrained and we know that Kaz is a hell of a fighter so... this is a while before soc tho so maybe he’s still improving idk) and he was like “back off the deal or I’ll bash your head in with your own cane” and Kaz was like “tell me, have we ever made a deal before” and Pekka was like “no or you’d know better,,, or be dead” and I was like KAZ IS TESTING HIM! Because of course they’d made a deal before hence the revenge thing!!! Without that deal with Pekka Rollins Kaz wouldn’t be the bastard he is today!!!

Also we’re already getting serious more-than-an-investment vibes coming from Kaz about Inej. Like he keeps doing and saying insulting things to her but it almost looked like he was going to APOLIGISE for one of them if she hadn’t walked out and I don’t think Kaz apologizes once in the books so like wowwwwee.

Also that like 2-minute interaction between Jesper and Inej was just the kind of thing I was hoping for. The interactions between those two as well as them together with Kaz are already so easy and fun (even if the subject matter is life threatening). When Jesper offers to go with Inej to the menagerie and she’s like “No” and he’s like “I meant as backup” but she’s already gone and he’s kinda like ‘oof screwed that up’ to himself MY HEART omg. Or in the first episode Jes was like “here’s what I don’t understand” and Inej was like “we’re gonna be here a long time” and he was just like “Rude” and I was like omg!!! The banter!!!! It’s begun!!!!!!!!

Also Inej is still indentured to the menagerie but like at the beck and call of Tante Heleen? She’s still under her control and has the tattoo and it seems like she’s not allowed to leave Ketterdam? Dunno what that’s about yet.

Anyways I know I’m really focusing on the crows but they’re my favourite and I’ve reread their duology like 3 times and barely remember anything from Shadow and Bone and everything that’s happened with that is pretty much the same as the book and all just set-up

Except for Alexei running away and making it all the way across the fold on foot (impossible???) only to be taken prisoner by a merch and brought to Ketterdam so he can said mercher and the crows and Nina disguised as not-Nina but being employed by Kaz for the first time about Alina Starkov the sun-summoner.

Oh also Alina and Mal’s friendship is really adorable so far. And I know they eventually end up together which I’m totally fine with (no darklina shipping here 🤢) but even before that their whole relationship is great. Also Zoya!!! Just Zoya, that’s it.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but Alina wasn’t originally half-Shu in the books right? That was added for the show? Idk either way we’re getting some not-so-subtle ~racism~ commentary with that which is fitting and timely with the popularity of the stop-Asian-hate movement so that’s actually a really great addition, I think but it’s not really my place to say I guess.

The Knight Stars - Session 19 - Hot Topic(s)

A summary of our latest DnD shenanigans.  (Previous shenanigans found here.)

We began with everyone getting a shitty night’s rest after the messed up shit we did to those corrupt Flaming Fist guards.  Heliodoro had to roll a wisdom save in his sleep. 👀

The next morning, Heliodoro nipped downstairs to grab breakfast for everyone.  Cael ate a huge ass pile of pancakes, after which, he got Helio to go out clothes shopping with him.

Mornath and Rue went out to the Counting House, Baldur’s Gate’s big bank, to seek the contact Lander had pointed us to in his latest letter.

The crowds were heavy in that part of town, so Mornath let Rue sit on her shoulders to see better and told her that Lander had said we’d know the man just by looking at him.

Rue spotted a finely dressed dwarf with all kinds of ornamentation braided up in his beard, set up in a booth, trying, and very well succeeding, in getting people to invest in pyramid schemes.  He had a big, sharp af gold canine tooth, which I strongly suspect was not originally meant for him.

We approached him and Mornath casually asked him in Thieves’ Cant if he was “in the business”, as per Lander’s instructions.  The dwarf gave an affirmative and Mornath told him that they have a mutual friend while visibly rolling a Harper coin back and forth across her knuckles.

This very much caught the man’s attention and he introduced himself as Hardren Goldtooth.  Mornath told him they need to discuss something privately, and at first, he brushed it off, saying that sometimes a crowd can be more private than you’d think, but she insisted that this was very important and not to be idly overheard, so he closed up shop (which involved geared mechanisms folding up his stand, making Mornath nerd out, because omg gnome tech) and he led us to a private back room within the Counting House.

After a little questioning, we learned quite a bit about Hardren.  He’s an information broker with his fingers in a lot of different pies.  Connections for days.  Apparently he’s worked with Lander a few times and has come out owing Lander.  We also got the impression that Hardren has quite a healthy fear of Lander, which is impressive, considering how powerful this dwarf clearly is.  I don’t think anything has made me go “holy shit, Lander is probably several levels higher than us” as much as that moment.

Anyway, Hardren made it clear that he has good intentions where the city is concerned and would be willing to help any friend of Lander’s, so we told him what we were up to with the Faceless Court and the Witchfinders.  He said he’d been avoiding rooting around in the pies he’s in because of the Witchfinders, but now that he’s got people to back him up, he agreed to start digging for us to see if he can find out any key names of people who are either friend or foe to our cause.

We called it a deal and Hardren told us he knew how to find us if he needs to.  Mornath told him that if he crosses us, he should remember who sent us, and as she shook his hand, she gave him a small static shock to make it clear Lander wouldn’t be the only person he’d have to worry about.

Hardren just smiled without flinching and said he wouldn’t dream of it; he knows what side his bread is buttered on, and we’re all friends here.  Mornath returned his smile, and said she knew that, but it was always good to make the terms of a contract completely clear, to which he heartily agreed.

Leaving Hardren with the names Morning Glory and Rue and the knowledge that he could see us perform at Virlen Sarmaris’ next gala (of fucking course Hardren knows about Virlen and is amused), we parted ways and headed back to the inn.

On their way back, Mornath and Rue had a very wholesome and revealing conversation about Lander and their friendships with him.

Mornath said it was nice to feel connected to Lander and his work a little through meeting Hardren, to which Rue agreed.  They talked about how it had been a while since seeing him in person, the last time being back in Waterdeep for only a brief amount of time.  Mornath explained that she only saw him recently once before that near the beginning of the year and that, beyond that, she hadn’t seen him in 8 years.  Lander has changed a great deal since they were teenagers, becoming a much more charismatic, wise, and focused man than the broody little edgelord she used to know.

Rue talked about how when she was good friends with Lander in college, she got to watch him transition into the man he is today.  He evidently helped another friend find purpose and would get up to hijinks with Rue.

Mornath said she used to get up to hijinks with him too and told the story of how she met Lander when she was a naive little teen, sneaking out at night and nearly getting robbed by a pack of urchins called the Hunters’ Lane Gang, but they decided to induct her into the group instead when she offered to mend their clothes with magic.  Lander was the best of that lot, she felt.

She went on to say that Lander talked about Mornath a lot, which Mornath of course found kind of baffling.  He apparently spoke highly and fondly of her, which had Mornath a little Error 404, so she moved on to say that he has said in his letters that he cares deeply for us, believes in our troupe, and our ability to handle the situation in Baldur’s Gate, which Mornath has found rather uplifting.  She offered to send a letter from Rue on a crow with her next communiqué, since Lander would certainly loved to hear from another dear friend in these dark times.

Rue happily agreed and expressed the hope that they’ll see Lander again soon.  Mornath replied that she didn’t think that’d be at least until after this whole business is over, since it seems that Lander can’t come and help in person, probably heavily tied up in his own demon fighting.  Even then, they really had no way of knowing when they’d see him or for how long if they did.  He has a habit of only sticking around for a few hours at a time, about a day at most.  Mornath wished that she could spend some proper time with him to really get to know who he is these days.  Rue felt similarly.

Back at the inn, Mornath and Rue came into the party’s room to see that Cael had purchased an alarmingly big pile of fashionable, goth-y clothes, including a set of matching crop tops for the lot of us. 

Cinder and Rue were quite pleased, but Heliodoro was holding up his with a look of “what do” in his eyes, which quickly became a blushy “help me, Mornath” when Cael tried to convince him to try it on.  At first, Mornath tried to pretend this wasn’t happening, blankly asking Cael how he planned to fit all those clothes in our wagon later, but eventually she met Heliodoro’s gaze, shortly after having her own crop top pressed into her hands.  She gave him an “I can’t help you; I’m just as confused” look.

Eventually, everyone had their crop tops on.  As per Cael’s design, they were all just a bit too small, making them tight.  This didn’t effect Rue too much, being a halfling, but Helio’s tattoos and rippling muscles where very much on display (Cael approves +10).  Some small, thin scars were visible on Mornath’s lower back, as was a bit of skin discolouration on Cael’s. (oooooooh backstory hints, guys)

Everyone but Cael changed back out of their crop tops for our meeting with the Idle Hands that evening.  Cinder and Mornath played lookout while Heliodoro, Rue, and Cael met with the Idle Hands rep in a secluded corner of the tavern.  The Idle Hands apparently have something that allows them to have a Blur effect on their faces, which is intriguing~.  This one also had the Idle Hands symbol on his palm.

The rep explained that their organization is aware of who we are and what we’re up to, and they want to help, since their goals are pretty much the same.  They want to find out who among the nobility of the city has fallen under the influence of the Faceless Court and to do that, they want us to be their eyes and ears at Virlen Sarmaris’ gala, which will be attended by many nobles.  As the hired performs, we’re supposed to be there, so the Idle Hands won’t have to risk subterfuge to get in this way.

After a bit of questioning to make clear what they wanted us to do and to make sure we could trust these people, we agreed to help, Helio, Rue, and Cael all shaking the rep’s hand.

Cael was exuding a surprising amount of presence this whole time in his crop top, which made the wink he gave the rep as they shook hands (or tWink as it was henceforth dubbed) a weirdly intimidating shade of saucy.

1. if given an opportunity to be an author of a novel, what era would you choose as the setting for that novel? (yes I stole that question)

A made up fictional era loosely based off the warring states period in China where the region was fractured into many different states :’D Or some dynasty of imperial China, possibly Ming, based loosely in the imperial palace  (because the architecture is so damn cool) about a rogue prince huehue (kill all ur brothers go go go)

2. Do you cook? What is your fav dish to make? (Or that you wish you could cook?)

I can cook yah, coz I had to cook for my whole house since I was 14 ... le sigh so I can cook normal home food... besides that...

I like anything with a lot of tomatoes in it. Soup, pasta... I also make thai curry / Japanese curry when the mood strikes, pork bone broth for a soup base to make soups... I think I like soups...  BBQ ribs... I mean... I like anything as long as it tastes good... hahaha 

I usually just have cravings for homemade dumplings though with vinegar and a ton of chilli sauce. 

3. Dyed hair, piercings or tattoos?

No piercings, dyed hair from time to time, no tatts. 

4.How often do you read books? And fanfic?

Books for leisure, all the time when I have time? Been re-reading Dorian Gray in between my usual Harry Potter / hunt for other fantasy genre books. Thinking of reading Kingkiller Chronicles or Six of Crows. Also need to read East West street by Phillipe Sands, and a few books for Geoffery Robertson QC. The list of books I need to read is ever-growing...

Fanfic, all the time, I usually re-read faves lately rather than hunt for new ones. 

5. In a classic detective story, who would you be? The detective, the clueless inspector, the crying maid or the victim?

I don’t watch too many sports but Tennis whenever the Grand Slam rolls around in my city in the summer, and football (soccer) from time to time.

Does E-sports count, I watch pro league of legends sometimes (Mainly LCK and Worlds coz I don’t care for EU/NA/LPL lol) 

7.Any fashion style you would like to try?

Not really, I’m usually too lazy/dgaf to dress extravagantly. I’m usually just in what’s WARM and comfortable to me, skinny jeans, gudetama t-shirt (or gryffindor jumper), red converses... or like a toggle jacket and boots...  (unless I need to dress to go to work in which i look in the mirror and i’m like tf who is this person also can we have casual fridays yet? no?? oh ok then -_- .) 

8. Fav national holiday.

I don’t celebrate any national holiday here really hahaha since whatever I am I’ll always be an immigrant who left their “home” origin country too long ago, any holiday here is just a holiday to me, probably whichever gives me the longest break... lol... christmas/new years? 

I like the chinese cultural fests we celebrate amongst ourselves though where I get to nom all the foods.
