"problematic" has no real meaning (like, problematic by who's standards?) but as long as it's not like... super major illegal stuff (like lolicon and actual incest) no i don't give a shit and the vibe of the server is "who give a shit"

but if you're talking about like. maligned / "condemned" ships by the annoying cunts on twitter and tiktok yeah we've made a point to make it a welcoming space. we have dedicated narumayo & cykesquill channels and there's a lot of other stuff of that flavour in the more general shipping channels like mitsumei and narumei and whatever else people like to make up problems about.

as for headcanons again like you'll have to be more specific... you're talking to a person who famously got excommunicated from the fandom simply because i think manfred von karma is nice to his kids. the ace attorney fandom is full of pearl-clutching, joined-fandom-during-covid, fanon telephone worshipping meangirl puritans with such abysmal media literacy skills that i struggle to believe they're not doing a bit most days.

Mod Note (Discussing Upcoming Arcs & Other)

So, I have a few arcs that are on their way (unfortunately these blogs are "real time" so they are going to be seeded well in advance).

1. April 8th will spark the END of this arc and the BEGINNING of the following arc. That arc will probably last all of April and some of May. (its a long one, I know, but it will be worth it, I swear).

To Add: I'm working on getting my calendar together (and actually following my original deadlines), so it should be a little more streamlined in the future.

2. Curly has started journaling daily, so it's worth your time to hop onto his account when you get a chance because there will be some hints to what's to come.

3. Daisuke will become a key player in the following arc. He has an account now so feel free to start asking him stuff if you'd like!

4. I'm looking for someone who might want to work with me running Anya's blog (and help with Daisuke's) because... well, I don't think I can run 4 blogs by myself and she will also be a pivotal character in the next arc. I have some people in mind but I'd love to reach out to more people.

5. I want to pay closer attention to my straw.page. I've been lacking and I want to do better so I'm making it a point from now onward that I'll check at LEAST once a day.

6. I KNOW you guys want Swansea but I promise I PROMISE it will be worth the wait I swear I am so sorry it's taken me so long to introduce him but he has a place in the story and unfortunately that isn't until the end of the next arc/beginning of the following one.

7. I'm thinking about creating a FAQ post because I get a lot of similar questions relating to the story. It also seems fun so I probably will work on this soon.

8. I'm also debating on doing Arc Recaps. I think it might be helpful for new people, but also it seems just as fun as the FAQ and any excuse to talk about this AU is a good excuse.

Tumblr Biases

Recieved yet another note on a poll expressing concern that it would be a biased result because the population of tumblr does not reflect all Sonic fans. This is true for all of this blogs polls - they can only, and only aim to, capture data on the Tumblr Sonic community.

A few expected biases that come to mind immediately, that you should be aware of interpretting the data from these polls (and many others on this website:

Tumblr seems to have above average incidence of neurodiversity when comparing large polls to global data (See Table 2). This is expected to affect polls regarding narrative readings, specifically in interpretting neurodiversity in characters, and interfan relations/ fandom culture.

Tumblr is known to overrepresent non-hetero sexualities (regrettably, citing buzzfeed here); this might suggest that polls will skew towards reading characters as LGBT, and a preference for same-sex pairings over more typically 'straight' user bases.

Tumblr has a higher proportion of women/ female identifying people, as well as a large non-binary and trans population. Considering that in 2015 Yougov found that more women than men listed Sonic as their favourite video game, (although we cannot extend this data too far - it is out of date, British, and a very specific wording), it could be said that this doesn't impact our polls as much as gaming communities with more men in them, however we should be aware that tumblr has a distinctly smaller community of cisgendered men.

Tumblr is perceived to lean left, although this is a difficult metric to quantify as 'left' is so broad. Still, we should expect polls relating to politics, ethics, and activism can be expected to be affected by this.

70% of tumblr users are Gen Z and Millenials. This should not be a major issue, as it is expected that the majority of Sonic fans will be under the age of 50 at present, but will impact the life stages we expect most users to have hit.

There will be more ways in which the data gained in these polls is biased by hosting on Tumblr. Blogrunner does not have ambitions to host polls on any other site, as this is where it is active. However please consider these and other biases if you intend to use any data gathered here for your own purposes, as well as the following caveats:

The reblogging nature of this site means that polls with small sample size cannot be considered reliable: one large blog might be able to share a poll and encourage their followers to vote in kind with them. I recommend that until polls start reaching 500 votes minimum, they cannot be considered fair representatives of the tumblr Sonic community, and as always the more votes the more reliable.

I am asking polls in English: these questions can only be considered to be reflective of the english speaking population of tumblr.

Polls on tumblr do not allow for changing vote - if wording is complex, votes are more likely to be inaccurate.

Polls regarding characters will include that characters tag, and therefore recieve more traffic from fans of the character who frequent that tag, than those who dislike the character, who may even have it blocked. Same for ships and games people may either follow or block.

Each day there will be a pinned post at midnight London time which will officially 'start' that day. Submissions for that day's prompts can be posted anytime after it, including later in the week (so if it's Day 3 and you want to post something for Day 1, that's perfectly fine too).

chapter 84, la nuit, is my favorite monte cristo chapter since la matzolatta, and since the whole first part up to the prison escape. Dumas has very skillfully given us tiny glimpses of Dantès’ interiority, increasing them milimetrically up to this chapter where for the first time something he couldn’t predict happen (in an emotionally affecting way, nothing like Caderousse’s attack which unpredictable as it was, could be swiftly controlled)

the other thing Dumas does beautifully here is destabilize the reader and make us shift loyalties. Monte Cristo becomes as the novel progresses, a highly unemphathetic character, his behavior makes me forget the inhuman suffering he has been subjected to, his beliefs in hereditary evil, his completely unironic embrace of becoming Providence that has him sacrificing innocents to his revenge, his fatalism and religious fanaticism, his apparent attraction to legal punishment (which I admit is ambiguous,and fascinating in many ways and worth analyzing in depth), his disparaging remarks towards other civilizations/towards other prisoners which he considers lesser beings-> not even worthy of rest!, his ownership of slaves, make him an unpleasant person to follow during the central chapters of the novel. He is also a skilled manipulator (see, when Albert confronts him, his lack of sincerity is almost cowardice, even if one might think his goal was to manipulate Albert into not dueling with him and therefore spare his life) so, spoilers ahead, we (hey, at least I do) definitely side with Mercedes when she irrupts to beg for her son’s life. She breaks down when she hears the truth from Dantès’ lips, she explains her side of the story. (Dantès’ retelling of his trauma, how he screamed her name in pain, is terrible to read too, and bringing the Romanticism Heavy Artillery back to the story) we side with her if we don’t share Dantès’ dogma, we want Albert, who is an innocent in this situation, to live. So when Mercedes easily accepts Dantès solution (instead of telling the truth to Albert, impossible within the constraints of this society) we are drawn away from Mercedes, she happily thanks the count for his love sacrifice and leaves, the narrator shows us Dantès’ surprise at her lack of regret at his suicide, or the fact that she doesn’t ask for a solution that doesn’t involve his death. Which makes me side with Dantès, because he finally understood or was willing for Mercedes’s sake to spare Albert, but the ease with which Mercedes accepts this offer makes us wish Dantès would live.
